Abstract

Amongst various oilseed crops grown across the world, soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) is globally important as a high source of protein and oil for human consumption and is also being used as potential feed for animals. Soybean is grown under rain-fed conditions in the tropics and subtropics in the marginal lands with less amount of external application of chemical fertilizers. The frequent climate variations have created a number of biotic and abiotic stresses, drought being a major abiotic stress which adversely affects the soybean productivity. Thus, to enhance the productivity of soybean, besides managing the nutrients, stress management is of utmost importance. There is a great opportunity of application of microbes especially arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) where its application alone or in combination with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) can help in nutrient mobilization and remediation of plant stresses.

SYNOPSIS

Food security is a complex issue, linked to availability and access to food, malnutrition in the population, economic development, environment, and local and global trade. Malnutrition hinders healthy growth and proper development of the human immune system affecting neurological and cognitive development especially in children.

Table 6.1 and table 6.2 shows the Gross Value Added (GVA) of poultry sector in Indian economy. The GVA from poultry sector in year 2017-18 at current price was Rs. 32844 Crore and Rs. 101913 for eggs and meat respectively.

Livestock sector may be considered as a driving force for nutritional security and an important component of sustainable agriculture in India. Livestock sector besides providing milk and meat also provides a diverse range of output for agriculture (manure, draught power and transport) and for manufacturing sector (fiber and leather). According to estimates of the Central Statistics Office (CSO), the value of output from livestock sector at current prices was about 4,59,051 crore during 2011-12 which is about 24.8% of the value of output from total agricultural and allied sector at current price and 25.6% at constant prices (2004-05). The value of output of milk is 3,05,484 crore in 2011-12, which is higher than the value of output of paddy and wheat. The value of output from eggs and wool group is 17,803 crore and 318 crore respectively for 2011-12. Livestock agriculture is the only way to produce food in many of the world’s harshest environments. Locally adapted breeds enable these vast areas to be used in a sustainable manner.

Abstract

Wild medicinal plants have been major source of therapeutic agents for alleviation or cure of human diseases since time immemorial. These are extensively utilized throughout the world in two distinct areas of health management i.e., modern medicine and or folk medicine. Some of the important medicinal plants grown and cultivated in India for medicine, phytochemicals, nutraceuticals, cosmetics and others are Abelmoschus moschatus, Aristolochia bracteata, Cassia alexandrina, Caralluma fimbriata, Gymnema sylvestre, Withania somnifera and other species. They have become important sectors of trade and commerce. However, in India, about 90% collection of medicinal plants is form wild source and since 70% of collections involve destructive harvesting, many plants have become endangered or vulnerable or threatened. The increasing demands of the pharmaceutical industry have created problem of supply and one of the major difficulties being experienced by the industry is that of obtaining sufficient quantities of medicinal plants for the manufacture of genuine medicine.

Introduction

Livestock sector plays a significant role in the Indian economy, particularly for the welfare of rural population of India. The importance of livestock in India's economy can be gauged from the fact that 90 million farming families rear over 90 million milch animals. Of the total household in the rural areas, about 73 percent own some form of livestock, three-quarter of which are reared by small and marginal farmers.

Today, the overall growth rate in livestock sector is steady and is around 4-5%, despite the fact that investment in this sector is not substantial. This is possible due to the egalitarian distribution of the livestock as compared to land among landless labourers, small and marginal farmers thus resulting in balanced development of the rural economy particularly in reducing the poverty especially among the weaker sections of the society. Livestock also plays an important source of employment in rural India, especially for women. The rural woman plays a significant role in most of the animal husbandry operations related to feeding, breeding, management and healthcare of the livestock.

Livestock plays an important and vital role in providing nutritive food to families both in rural and urban areas. Since the dawn of civilization, mankind has been utilizing different animal species for a variety of purposes, viz., production of milk, meat, wool, egg and leather, draught power, companionship, entertainment, research experimentation, sports, security, etc. Livestock wealth is deemed to be as the oldest wealth resource for mankind and was once a symbol of economic status in the society. This is one sector where poor contributes to the growth directly instead of getting benefit from growth generated elsewhere. The effect of livestock sector growth on poverty is anecdotal, yet scattered evidence on livestock's contribution to income indicates that growth in livestock production is pro-poor.

Abstract

Most dryers operate at low thermal efficiency. The development of models and control systems offers an opportunity to improve dryer operation and efficiency. Dryer control is very important and with deeper understanding of the drying concept, new “smart” dryers can be made more reliable and more cost-effective than classical dryers. This chapter will provide an overview of necessity of control and safety measure in food drying system, and terminology related with drying control system. Different control strategy includes conventional and advanced techniques implemented in drying operation are reviewed  here and simple outline of intelligence control system in drying technology are briefly described in succeeding section. Various hazards in drying process and risk and safety management will also be discussed.

The economic loss in livestock arising due to mycotoxicosis is enormous apart from being a health risk. Indian economy is heavily affected by mycotoxins. It was estimated that 10 million dollars were lost in India’s export within a decade due to groundnut contamination with mycotoxins (Vasanthi and Bhat, 1998). Many developing countries have realized that reducing mycotoxin contamination in foods will not only improve the health and production in animal, but also increase the raw material exports (international trade) to other countries. The following strategies are to be adhered strictly to reduce the mycotoxins contamination of crops in the field.

1. Early harvesting

Early harvesting reduces the fungal infection of crop in the field. Early harvesting and threshing of groundnuts results in lower aflatoxin levels and higher gross returns of 27% than in delayed harvesting (Rachaputi et al., 2002).

Sterilization refers the complete removal or elimination of microorganisms from an environment. Physical and chemical agents are available to remove the microorganisms from the environment. Heat, irradiation and filtration are the three physical agents and various chemicals are available for sterilization.

Terms related to control of microorganisms

Cide or cidal means to kill the microorganism (Ex. Bactericidal refers the killing of bacteria).

Static or stasis means inactivation or inhibition, but not killing. They prevent multiplication of the organism. (Ex. Fungistatic refers the inhibition of growth of fungi.).

Sepsis refers break down of a living tissue by organisms and is accompanied by inflammation and pus formation.

Antispetic is an agent applied externally on living tissues to kill or inhibit the growth of the organisms.

Disinfectant is an agent applied externally on inanimate objects (not living tissues) to destroy harmful pathogens in their vegetative stage.

Plant diseases create challenging problems in commercialagriculture and pose real economic threats to bothconventional and organic farming systems. Plantpathogens are difficult to manage for several reasons.First of all, plant pathogens are hard to identify becausethey are so small. The positive identification of apathogen often requires specialized equipment andtraining, and in some cases accurate diagnosis in thefield is difficult.Plant pathogens are constantly changing and mutating,resulting in new strains and new challenges togrowers. Disease management is complicated by the presenceof multiple types of pathogens. For any crop thegrower must deal with a variety of fungi, bacteria, viruses,and nematodes. This situation is even more complicatedfor organic crop production because they usuallyproduce a wide array of crops and are prohibitedfrom applying conventional synthetic fungicides.The world market continues to be extremely competitiveand continues to require that growers supplyhigh-quality, disease-free produce with an acceptableshelf life.

Fruits are living commodities which continue to respire and transpire even after harvest. The storage life of fresh fruits is indirectly proportional to the rate of their respiration which in turn depends on the atmospheric gas composition in which they are stored. Normal air contains about 20.9% oxygen (O2), 78.0% Nitrogen (N₂) and 0.03% carbondioxide (CO₂). Lower levels of O₂ and higher levels of CO₂ in the storage environment result in reduced rate of respiration, delayed ripening and increased storage life. The reduction in O₂ concentration and increase in CO₂ concentration in the storage room with precise control and maintenance of these gases throughout the storage period is generally referred as controlled atmosphere (CA) storage.

CA storage is generally used for long term storage or long distance transportation of fruits in combination with low temperature storage. The use of CA storage for extending the post harvest life of fruits has increased steadily worldwide during the past 60 years. This trend is expected to continue with the advancement of technologies in attaining and maintaining CA during transport, storage and marketing of fresh fruits.

Introduction

Perishable nature of horticultural produce is a major factor contributing in high post-harvest losses. The metabolic processes such as respiration, transpiration, and ethylene production remain active after the harvesting of produce, which drive ripening and senescence Fig. 1. Thus, an effective post-harvest handling is crucial to delay these changes. The rate of these processes depends on the produce’s physiological characteristics, composition, and storage conditions like temperature and humidity. Low-temperature storage is the simplest and most efficient method to slow down deterioration Escobedo-Avellaneda and Welti-Chanes, 2016. Combining low temperatures with methods that limit oxygen exposure, which fuels many enzymatic reactions, further extends shelf life and maintains food quality. Reduced oxygen levels decrease respiration and the activity of enzymes like polyphenol oxidase and peroxidase.

Introduction

Nitrogen (N) fertilization assured centre stage for enhancing food production in developing countries especially after the introduction of high yielding and fertilizer responsive crop varieties. Almost half of the human population relies on N fertilizer for food production (Ladha et al., 2005), and about 56 percent of the N fertilizer is used for producing rice, maize, and wheat (IFA, 2002). It has contributed an estimated 40% to the increase in per capita food production over the past 50 years (Smil, 2002). However, excess use of chemical N fertilizer may negatively affect surface water, as well as groundwater, and the atmosphere (through leaching and runoff) through volatilization of N (Galloway et al., 2008).

Control means the power or authority to direct and order or restrain. In the context of an entrepreneurial function, control may be defined as “comparing operating results with the plans, and taking corrective action when results deviate from the plans”.

Control requires two things: first, there is a clear – cut and specific plan according to which any work is to proceed and second, it is possible to measure the results of operations with a view to detecting deviations.

Components of biodiversity are all the various forms of life on Earth including ecosystems, animals, plants, fungi, microorganisms, and genetic diversity. Ecosystems, species and genetic resources should be used for the benefit of humans, but in a way that does not lead to the decline of biodiversity. Substantial investments are required to conserve biodiversity, but it will bring significant environmental, economic and social benefits in return. To address these challenges various initiatives were taken in the past such as Ramsar Convention on Wetlands in 1971, Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) in 1973, 1979 Bonn Convention on Migratory Species (CMS) in 1979.

The ever mounting population in 21^st century is a great challenge for the researchers to provide ample food and that has to be achieved within the context of existing challenges such as deteriorated arable land along with increasing adverse affects of changing climate. There is demand to increase food production to the tune of 70% by 2050 (Wani and Sah, 2014). Although major crops have achieved good progress, vulneRability to climatic variability emerged as a serious concern in crop improvement which could be attributed to higher sowing densities that in turn lead to more competition for water and nutrients. Abiotic stresses can be considered as major yield restraining factors among different crops. The projected estimations for changes in abiotic stresses such as drought, water logging and heat reveals far serious concerns for crop productivity (Qin et al., 2011; Bailey-Serres et al., 2012). Therefore, the concern of global food security in the era of climate change has compelled plant scientists in different crops to shift to breeding for climate resilient genotypes. Maize, being a hardy crop has an inherent potential to perform well under sub-optimal environments with minimum crop management (Kole et al., 2015). Abiotic stresses such as drought, heat and water logging affects maize yield adversely.

Although, conventional breeding approaches have exploited its fullest potential for production of elite maize hybrids but still little success attained for breeding climate resilient genotypes or varieties owing to the fact that stress tolerance is multi-genic or quantitative in nature. Therefore, the best option is to utilize the molecular breeding along with the conventional approaches for development of climate smart varieties.

9.1 INTRODUCTION

When a new individual arises from a somatic cell without formation of a seed, it is called vegetative propagation. Vegetative propagation occurs naturally (i.e., natural vegetative propagation) in many crops, and profitably exploited in horticulture using either conventional or biotechnological artificial techniques. We shall discuss conventional artificial vegetative propagation in this chapter including cuttings, grafting, budding, layering, suckering, etc. They have been widely used for commercial propagation of fruit trees and ornamental shrubs.

Introduction

Vegetables are preferable host to many insects because of their succulence and suitable nutritional status. All vegetables are attacked but degree of damage and number of pests varies depending upon the crop, variety and climate. Pest infestation in vegetables has been the main bottleneck in their economical production. The problem has more socio-economic dimensions because of rapid expansion of area under vegetables, intensive cultivation, round the year cultivation, export enhancement and health consciousness among the people.

The diamondback moth (DBM), Plutella xylostella (L.), is a major pest of brassica crops worldwide. DBM has been estimated globally to cost US$ 1 billion in direct losses and control costs. (Grzywacz et al., 2010)

Cereal grains and cereal by-products
The appropriate nutrition of livestock necessitates the inclusion of a specific proportion of cereals and their byproducts. For poultry and swine, cereals constitute the primary element of their daily dietary intake. Consequently, there exists a direct competition for these cereal resources between livestock and humans. Specifically, only 2% of rice and wheat, 5% of sorghum, 10% of barley and maize, and 50% of bajra and ragi are allocated for animal feed.
Cereals belong to the Gramineae family and are classified as annual plants (Khariff). These grains are primarily composed of carbohydrates, with starch being the predominant component of their dry matter, concentrated in the endosperm. Cereal grains are abundant in TDN and net energy, making them highly palatable to livestock. The DCP content ranges from 7% to 10%, while TDN levels fall between 70% and 80% for ruminants. In non-ruminants, such as pigs and poultry, these energy-rich grains can be incorporated into their diets at proportions of approximately 50% to 70%.
Structure of a grain: Grain kernels are referred to as caryopses. Those grains that possess husks, such as oats, barley and rice, are classified as covered caryopses, while grains that lack husks, including maize, wheat, rye, and sorghum, are termed naked caryopses. Each kernel, excluding the husk, consists of two primary components: the pericarp and the seed.
Pericarp: This structure is composed of two distinct layers. The outer layer, which includes the epidermis and hydroderm, is collectively known as the beeswing. The inner layer of the pericarp is characterized by the presence of cross cells and tube cells.
Seed: The seed is further divided into four components: the seed coat, hyaline layer, endosperm, and germ (embryo). When the grain undergoes processing that removes both the germ and the starch endosperm, the remaining parts of the seed along with the pericarp are referred to as bran.

Protein supplements can be obtained from animal origin or plant origin. Animal origin has mostly over 47% CP, 1.0% Ca, 1.5% P and fewer than 2.5% fiber while plant origin has mostly less than 47% CP, 1.0% Ca, 1.5% P and over 2.5% fibre. Other sources from which protein supplements can be obtained include NPN compounds, single cell protein etc.
Plant Origin Oil Cakes
In India, oilseeds occupy a significant position in terms of both production area and economic value, ranking second only to food grains. The country is the third-largest producer of oilseeds globally, following the United States and China. Approximately 12-13% of the world’s oilseed cultivation occurs in India, contributing to 6-8% of global oilseed output and 5-7% of the world’s oilseed cake production. Additionally, India is a notable exporter of soybean meal, generating substantial foreign exchange earnings.
The agro-ecological conditions in India are conducive to the cultivation of seven key edible oilseeds, namely groundnut, soybean, mustard-rapeseed, sesame, sunflower, safflower and niger. Furthermore, India also produces two significant non-edible oilseeds: linseed and castor. The country is involved in the production of tree oilseeds as well, including coconut and oil palm.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses an escalating threat to global health, eroding the efficacy of antibiotics and complicating the management of bacterial infections. The proliferation of resistant pathogens, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), extended-spectrum betalactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae, and multidrug-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis, has driven significant increases in morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. The ability to detect AMR accurately and promptly is paramount for guiding clinicians in selecting effective therapies, implementing targeted infection control measures, and informing public health strategies to curb the spread of resistant organisms. Conventional methods, rooted in phenotypic assessments, have served as the cornerstone of AMR detection in clinical microbiology laboratories for decades. These techniques evaluate bacterial growth under controlled exposure to antibiotics, offering direct evidence of resistance or susceptibility that molecular approaches, which focus on genetic markers, may miss due to silent mutations, complex regulatory mechanisms, or novel resistance pathways. This chapter provides an exhaustive examination of conventional AMR detection methods, encompassing disk diffusion, broth and agar dilution, gradient diffusion, and automated susceptibility testing systems. These approaches, refined through decades of clinical and research application, remain indispensable for their reliability, cost-effectiveness, and adaptability across diverse settings, from well-resourced tertiary hospitals to laboratories in low-income regions. By exploring their principles, procedures, applications, and limitations, we aim to underscore their enduring significance amidst the rise of rapid molecular diagnostics. The discussion also addresses specialized tests for detecting specific resistance mechanisms, such as beta-lactamase production, inducible clindamycin resistance, and carbapenem’s activity, which are critical for tailoring antimicrobial therapy. Through a critical lens, this chapter evaluates the strengths and challenges of these methods, offering insights into their role in addressing the global AMR crisis, their integration with emerging technologies, and their continued relevance in both routine diagnostics and epidemiological surveillance. The value of conventional methods lies in their ability to translate laboratory findings into actionable clinical decisions. Unlike genotypic methods, which detect resistance genes but may not predict phenotypic behaviour, these techniques assess how bacteria respond to antibiotics under conditions mimicking in vivo environments, aligning closely with therapeutic outcomes. As resistance patterns grow increasingly complex, driven by mechanisms like carbapenem’s and efflux pumps, conventional methods provide a practical foundation for diagnostics, particularly in resource-limited settings where advanced molecular tools are often inaccessible. Their role in global AMR surveillance, such as through the World Health Organization’s Global Antimicrobial Resistance Surveillance System (GLASS), further underscores their importance in tracking resistance trends and informing policy.

Crop disease forecasting is a crucial component of integrated crop management, enabling farmers and agricultural practitioners to anticipate and prepare for potential disease outbreaks. The importance of crop disease forecasting cannot be overstated, as it allows for the timely implementation of disease management strategies, reducing the risk of yield losses and minimizing the use of chemical pesticides. Conventional methods of crop disease forecasting have been widely used for decades, relying on observations of weather patterns, crop phenology, and disease symptoms to predict the likelihood of disease outbreaks. These methods have been refined over time, incorporating new technologies and data sources to improve their accuracy and reliability (Fig. 10.1). Despite the advent of modern technologies, such as machine learning and remote sensing, conventional methods of crop disease forecasting remain a vital tool for many farmers and agricultural practitioners. These methods are often simple, cost-effective, and accessible, making them particularly suitable for smallscale farmers and resource-constrained agricultural systems. This chapter will provide an overview of conventional methods of crop disease forecasting, highlighting their principles, advantages, and limitations. The chapter will also discuss the importance of crop disease forecasting in modern agriculture, emphasizing its role in promoting sustainable crop production and reducing the environmental impact of agricultural practices.
10.1 Conventional methods of Forecasting
There are several conventional methods of crop disease forecasting that have been widely used for decades. Some of these methods include:
10.1.1 Weather-based forecasting
This method uses weather data, such as temperature, rainfall, and humidity, to predict the likelihood of disease outbreaks. Weather-based forecasting models use statistical relationships between weather variables and disease incidence to make predictions (Fig. 10.2).

Disease diagnosis refers to the various procedures and techniques used to identify the nature of disease and to precisely pinpoint the primary and secondary pathogens involved. Disease diagnosis is an integral part of health management. Proper diagnosis helps to adopt accurate therapy and avoids indiscriminate use of chemotherapeutics. Information on case history and clinical signs should be carefully used while examining samples for diagnosis. By following rational and scientific sampling protocols, one can hope to arrive at accurate diagnosis. Sampling methodology is key to the success of proper disease diagnosis. Dead fish/shrimp should never be used for any diagnostic purpose. Autolytic post-mortem changes, saprophytic invaders, spoilage organisms, etc. mask the actual etiological agents and can lead to false diagnosis.

The three commonly used conventional diagnostic approaches are fresh examination using microscope, microbiological methods and histopathology. With little facilities and infrastructure, fresh microscopical diagnostic approach can be done at the farm/hatchery site itself. Gross examinations along with simple skin and gill preparations examined under microscope can many a times give very good information about the disease and the etiology. All fresh preparations should be made from live or moribund fish and the preparations should be wet and moist. The fish meant for examination should be kept wet and not allowed to dry. Many of the commonly occurring external disease problems can be easily diagnosed by this method.

Systemic bacterial diseases need to be positively diagnosed by adopting the microbiological approach. Samples for bacterial isolations should be taken from kidney, blood, body cavity, etc. from live or moribund fish following strict aseptic conditions. In shrimp, it is ideal to use hemolymph for bacterial isolations. Dominant bacterial isolates are identified following standard procedures and their antibacterial sensitivity tested before recommending any antibacterial therapy. This method requires a minimum of 4-5 days.

There is no better engineering than life.

What is life - is a perennial question. Life is defined in different ways depending upon who is defining it. Biologists define life using a list of characteristics, such as metabolism, evolution, homeostasis, constant transformation, genetic information, etc. Life has been defined as self-maintaining and self-producing systems. Physicist Erwin Schrödinger (1), argued that living organisms escape the destiny of disordered equilibrium because they are able to take up ‘orderliness’ from their environment. Philosophers have defined life from different angles. They say that life can only be understood fully from an ‘insider’ perspective.

Life is not a random collection of extinct molecules. It is a process of dynamic renewal; everything in life is constantly turning over and renewed. Life exists in diverse forms. Each form is specialised to survive and reproduce in its particular niche.

One understands life from one’s own perspective. For some, life is an ‘objects in flux’ that constantly exchanges matter with the environment. It is systematic material exchange into an organized body. Then there is a view that says that all living organisms deserve moral consideration. All living organisms, however, do not have equal moral significance; vertebrates, for various reasons, deserve more moral consideration than would bacteria or plants. Then there are myriad religious ways to define life. The simplest is “God created the world and all living organisms.” No further questions, accept or reject the hypothesis.

Abstract

This chapter highlights the importance of re-engineering the functional processes prevalent in organizations today and realigning organizational resources with policies, procedures and systems that foster innovation in the technological and managerial space and institutionalize long term sustainability of businesses in emerging market economies such as India. These economies can serve as an engine for growth in a globalized era, if the intellectual capital of these economies is utilized and enhanced with maximum possible efficiency. It is in this scenario where entrepreneurial and decision making techniques based on the knowledge management-organizational learning continuum can help in the confluence of open innovation practices and stable management expertise. Such a comprehensive strategic shift from being a financial economy to a knowledge economy needs to be supported by integration of practical actions with the untapped cognitive potential of emerging economies. Organic farming necessitates a shift from conventional to non-chemical agricultural methods and practices. For this, it needs creation of facilities for the production of organic inputs, adoption of crop rotation, green manuring and other best management practices for the organic production of crops and livestock. Further, the ‘towards organic approach’ in intensive agricultural areas and ‘scientific organic farming’ in niche areas have to be implemented for development of an organic farm. The synthesized information on how to convert an inorganic farm into an organic farm followed by its sustainable maintenance is the need of the hour. This chapter holistically deals with designing and maintaing the whole ecosystem organic.

1. Introduction

Nowadays, the growers, policymakers and consumers are talking about organic farming (OF) across the globe. For practitioners, it is still a confusion regarding what and how to practice OF. There is a wrong notion that simple addition of organic manures and the use of chemical pesticides for growing different crops is considered as organic farming. In sense real, organic farms are the cultivated fields without addition of chemical fertilizers, pesticides, livestock additives, etc., and only organic and (or) non-chemical methods are practiced, and the concept or practice is known as organic farming. A large number of farms have been converted from conventional into chemical farms during the last more than 50 years by using synthetic chemicals. In view of the increasing demand for organic products and spiraling soil and human health problems, there is need to transform them gradually into organic farms. So that, it can help enhance soil organic carbon status and fertility which in turn can support crop growth and produce healthy foods besides protecting the environment. However, the extent of chemical used might be varying from one farm to another depending on the crops cultivated, nutrient requirement, pest/ disease severity, availability and accessibility to chemical use, socio-economic condition of the farmers, geographical location, etc.

The Metric System

At present metric system is followed to calculate final results in analysis work. This system is quite simple in nature as well as in principle. The units of the metric system are: (1) the  metre (linear measure), (2) the litre (measure of capacity), and (3) the gram (measure of mass.)

One litre is the volume of pure water at 4ºC and 760 mm pressure which weigh 1 kilogram (kg). One litre equals 1000.027 cubic centimetres (Cm3) for most work, the units “millilitre”, “cubic centimetre” and used interchangeably.

At present there are three different temperature scales in common use. These are: the Fahrenheit (F), used chiefly in English-speaking countries. the centigrade (C), used universally in scientific work and the Absolute (T) or Kelvin (K) scale, differing from the centigrade only in the position of the zero point, its divisions being of the same size. its zero point is -273ºC. The kelvin scale is used especially in dealing with very high or very low temperature and in computations involving the laws of gases. Conversion of muscle to meat is a complex process in which several physical and chemical changes takes place over a period of several hours or even days. The major changes which take place during this process include fall in muscle pH and temperature as well as muscle shortening which further leads to proteolysis or ageing. These changes during conversion of muscles to meat are variable and have great effect on meat quality (tenderness, juiciness, flavour, colour etc.) and also on certain processing characteristics like emulsification, binding properties and yield of the products. To know this complex process it is necessary to understand the process of energy production and metabolic pathway shifting in live animals.

Pre Slaughter

In the living animal, aerobic metabolism is used to obtain energy. The source of energy at this stage is either free fatty acids or blood glucose or muscle glycogen. In this process total 38 ATP molecules are produced from single glucose or glycogen molecule by the complex processes known as glycolysis, oxidative decarboxylation and oxidative phosphorylation. However, under stressful situations, anaerobic metabolism may be used and lactic acid is produced. Lactic acid is usually transported from the muscles to the liver, where it is re-synthesized into glucose and glycogen, or to the heart, where it is metabolized to carbon dioxide and water.

Effective application of pesticides depends on many factors. One of the more important is to correctly calculate the amount of material needed. Unless you have the correct amount of pesticide in your tank mix, even a correctly calibrated sprayer can apply the wrong rate.

Manufacturers provide application rate instructions on every pesticide label. Due to the variety of ways in which these recommendations are stated (such as lbs. of active ingredient (a.i.) per acre, lbs. of formulation per 100 gal. of spray, or ozs, of a.i. per 1,000 sq. ft.) it is often necessary to adapt the recommendations to different areas and volumes, or even other units. Sometimes the amount of active ingredient must be converted to the amount of actual product. This process can be very confusing.

Principle

The use of boric acid as an ammonia absorbent was first introduced by winkle  (1913-15). Conway and O’Malley (1942) used boric acid for ammonia absorption in their original micro diffusion technique.

The ammonia liberated in the outer chamber by alkali addition in the usual way is absorbed in boric acid mixture plus indicator in the central chamber (slightly reddish), the pH of this mixture being approximately 5 before absorption. During the ammonia absorption the pH of the mixture rises, and to upwards of 8.0 (the strength of the mixture being such as to prevent it rising further). After the required period, the fluid in the central chamber is titrated to a faint permanent reddish tint with standard acid. A mixture of methyl red and bromocresol green was found satisfactory  to work as an indicator to assist in titration job.

ABSTRACT

The improper disposal of food waste poses an environmental threat. The management of food waste in a sustainable way is always a challenge. Food waste is generated at various stages starting from food production till consumption. The cooked food waste generated due to various reasons leads not only to a loss of the food produced but also the water and energy used to cook it. This cooked food leftover can be served to the needy people or if not possible, can be processed further. This chapter focuses on various technological options for the management of cooked food waste in a sustainable way.

INTRODUCTION
In an internal combustion engine, fuel is combusted within the cylinder to generate power. During the power stroke, the temperature can reach up to 1600 ºC, which exceeds the melting point of engine components. The optimal operating temperature for internal combustion engines ranges between 140 ºF and 200 ºF, making cooling a crucial aspect of engine operation. It is estimated that approximately 40% of the total heat generated is released into the atmosphere through the exhaust, 30% is dissipated through the cooling system, and the remaining 30% is used to produce power.
The cooling system in internal combustion engines plays a vital role in ensuring the engine operates efficiently and reliably. It is responsible for maintaining the engine’s temperature within the optimal range, preventing overheating that can lead to engine damage. The engine generates substantial amounts of heat during combustion, and without proper cooling, these temperatures can rise to levels that exceed the melting point of engine components. This can result in engine failure, reduced performance, and significantly shortened engine life. The primary function of the cooling system is to absorb excess heat from the engine and dissipate it into the atmosphere, keeping the engine temperature within safe limits. This allows the engine to perform at its best while avoiding costly repairs and downtime.

Cooling systems play a vital role in cold chain logistics, serving as essential components that regulate temperature for storage, processing, and transportation. An efficient cooling system ensures that food and other perishable products remain fresh for extended periods, even before they begin their journey. Various cold chain products require specific temperature settings to maintain their quality and integrity until they reach their final destination.
For instance, tropical fruits such as bananas and pineapples must be stored at a consistent temperature between 12°C and 14°C. If the temperature exceeds this range, the fruits may ripen prematurely, compromising their quality. Likewise, food items like milk, vegetables, and other perishable fruits should be cooled within the range of 2°C to 4°C. This temperature effectively eliminates harmful pathogens and prevents bacterial growth, preserving the freshness of the produce.
For businesses dealing with frozen food, seafood, or ice cream, a more advanced cooling system is necessary—one that can maintain temperatures as low as -30°C. Such systems are essential to prevent thawing and spoilage, ensuring that frozen goods remain in optimal condition throughout their transportation and storage.

Coordinate Reference System (CRS) is a framework of coordinate based local, regional or global reference system used to represent the locations of geographic features. Coordinate Reference Systems (CRS) provide a standardized way to define the real-world geographic locations which further enable us to use common locations of geographic datasets for integration. The datasets from different sources and CRS are transformed to a common CRS in order to perform various integrated analytical operations like overlaying of data layers. Coordinate Reference Systems are mainly of two types:

1. Geographic Coordinate System: This is global or spherical coordinate system in which locations of features on earth are defined in terms of latitude and longitude values. Latitude and longitude are angles based on a point at the centre of the earth. In this system, locations are defined by degrees, therefore, distances cannot be measured accurately. The most common geographic coordinate system is the World Geodetic System 84 (WGS84).
2. Projected Coordinate System: In this system, locations of features are defined using cartesian x, y coordinates on a flat, two – dimensional surface. This system is based on sphere or ellipsoid projected on flat surface. Projected Coordinate System are generally referred as projec- tion. It is required for preparing maps on paper or computer screen. Un- like Geographic Coordinate System, projected coordinate system has ac- curate measurements of distance, angles and areas across the two dimen- sions. However, there is alwaystrade-offs between area, direction, shape, and distance in this system due to distortions created while representing ellipsoid or spheroid on a flat map. So, the projection type is selected based on its application. Most common projections are Universal Trans- verse Mercator (UTM), Lambert Conformal Conic and Albers Equal Area.

In the semi-arid tropics, where small farmers depend heavily on rain-fed agricultural systems, variability in precipitation has a dramatic impact on crop production and livelihoods. Because small-scale agriculture depends on rain-fed cultivation, it is vulnerable to factors such as flooding and drought. Unfortunately, the frequency of unexpected heavy rainfall or flood events has increased in many areas of Africa, including Southern Zambia. About 75% of farmers in Zambia engage in small-scale farming, with an average farm size of 2 ha (VAM Steering Committee Zambia, 1998). Most of these farmers cultivate maize, which is a staple food in Zambia, and stable maize production and increased productivity are important both for food security and to provide a livelihood to farmers.

In spite of its importance, little has been done to assess interactions of climatic variability with productivity performance of different livestock species, sustainability of livestock production systems, livestock based livelihoods and application of science of climate change on small holder and subsistence livelihoods. The climate and its change affect all productive traits and physiological functions of farm livestock and related livelihoods. Heat stress is the most detrimental constraint to livestock production, particularly in mountainous regions. Introduction and selection for highly productive animals and breeds has increased their susceptibility to adverse impacts of climate change. It is necessary to incorporate resilience through selection and breeding for thermo-tolerance and development of adaptable breeds. Modifications in shelter designs and management of production facilities will also be helpful in mitigating adverse climate impacts on animal production and health. Modern animal husbandry practices that target increased per animal productivity allow efficient utilization of feed nutrients and increase returns from fewer animals. Livestock need to be looked for their immense contribution to nutritional security and livelihoods. A well designed livestock production system is among the best ways for sustaining and improving livelihoods and this chapter details the possible options.

Copyright law is a fundamental mechanism for safeguarding intellectual property (IP). It provides creators exclusive rights to their work and controls its reproduction, distribution, and use. As creative industries expand globally, copyright law has become integral to protecting creators’ rights and enabling innovation. Originally stemming from the need to protect books, copyright now covers diverse mediums, including music, films, software, and digital content.
The Copyright Act is legislation that formalizes these protections and establishes rules regarding ownership, rights, duration, and infringement of copyrighted materials. Each country may have its own version of the Copyright Act, yet the overarching principles are largely similar due to international agreements such as the Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works and the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Copyright Treaty.
Historical Development and Global Influence
The foundation of copyright law can be traced to early European statutes. The Statute of Anne (1710) in Britain is often considered the first formal copyright legislation, setting a precedent for other jurisdictions. The Statute of Anne aimed to promote learning by granting authors the right to control and profit from their work, forming the concept of authorial rights.
In the 19th and 20th centuries, as cross-border trade expanded, nations recognized the need for standardized copyright protection. The Berne Convention for the Protection of Literary and Artistic Works (1886) marked a pivotal moment, providing a framework for copyright on an international scale. The Universal Copyright Convention (UCC) (1952) and Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement further unified copyright standards, ensuring fair treatment of copyrighted works across borders.

Intellectual property right (IPR) is the most serious, new branch of law and a legal right conferred by federal government in accordance with International conventions and treaties. IPR protects some of the finer manifestations of human achievement. IPR safeguards the application of ideas and information that are of commercial value. The exploitable ideas become more sophisticated and hope for a successful economic future depends increasingly upon the superior corpus of new knowledge and fashionable conceits.  Copyright law is one of the effective tools of IPR. Copyright law provides an incentive to creative activity of author and permits the society to benefit from those inventions. However, the technological advancement has made violation of copyright very easy and regulation very difficult. This paper aims at familiarizing  copyright laws and the powers enshrined in copyright laws.
