Diagnostic Symptoms
• Pathogen infects the seedlings and produces small reddish circular spots on the cotyledons and primary leaves.
• Lesions develop on the collar region, stem may be girdled, causing seedling to wilt and die.
• In mature plants, the fungus attacks the stem, leading to stem splitting and shredding of bark.
• Most common symptom is boll spotting. Small water soaked, circular, reddish brown depressed spots appear on the bolls.
• The lint is stained to yellow or brown, becomes a solid brittle mass of fiber.The infected bolls cease to grow and burst and dry up prematurely(Fig-2).

The disease i s seen at all crop growing stages. The fi rst symptoms appear at the time of emergence of seedlings, when the cotyledons are attacked. They become yellow and turn brown followed by wilting and drying of the affected seedlings. In the fi eld, the wilting symptoms appear in patches. First of all, the older leaves become yellow, loose their turgidity, wilt, turn brown and droop.

This is the commonest symptom of nearly all respiratory diseases and is indicative of an effort to expel a foreign substance causing irritation on any place in the cough reflex path.

The center is in the medulla close to the respiratory centers. This is activated reflexly by the afferent impulses traveling up mostly along the vagus and to a less extent, the vagus and the phrenic (to bronchi and diaphragm), the spinal accessory, intercostals and other nerves supplying the accessory muscles of respiration. The peripheral fibres of the vagus and the phrenic are also sometimes directly affected causing cough reflex.

The medullary center itself may also be excited or restrained by impulses from superior cerebella centers, so that cough may be induced or controlled by voluntary efforts.

1.1. Introduction
The terms ‘counselling’ and ‘health promotion’ complement each other when it becomes a matter of an individual’s health. Health promotion is a part of behavioural social science that aims to change the systemic strategies adopted by the individual or group or by the mass community for the betterment of their health which can be achieved by talk therapy known as counselling. In the 21st century, from childhood to adulthood, all people are in a ‘rat race’ for their careers and necessities, which is one of the main reasons for stress generation. Not only that, chemical substances consumed by different food ingredients as food additives, preservatives, etc. but also induce oxidative stress and damage the functional activity of cells, tissues, organs, and systems. This ‘stress’ is a major culprit not only for the deterioration of physical health but also psychological health. Such stress imposition in daily life impairs normal physiological functions, skills, performance, and productivity. Unhealthy food, life, and work styles are also linked to the onset of pathophysiological complications that counselling and health promotion are required to overcome. Besides this, for sportsmen, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and growing children, nutritional counselling and health promotion are indisputable. For disease prevention and early recovery from disease, dietary counselling plays an immense role.
1.2. Counselling
Counselling is an intermittent, interpersonal interviewing process where the counsellor gives advice or suggestions to the client but never gives any direction. Counsellors assist the client in thinking, analysing, and acting to improve their insight power. The counsellor focuses on both the positive and negative sides of a particular event and allows the client to think and rethink its acceptability and unacceptability.

Enumeration of cells is essential to determine the multiplicity of infection, efficiency of plating and to obtain the specific number of cells for an experiment. The concentration of cells of a suspension can be counted using a haemocytometer. Each chamber is divided into a grid of nine large squares. Each large square is 1mmX1mm (area 1 mm²) and the depth is o.1 mm. The volume of each square is 0.1 mm³ or 10^-4 cm³. Since 1 cm³ is equal to 1 ml, the number of cells per ml of suspension can be obtained by multiply the average count per large square by 10⁴ and reciprocal of dilution factor. Dilution is made in such a way that one large square contain about 20-60 cells. The haemocytometer chambers should be filled by capillary action and cell clump are counted as one cell. A total count does not distinguish between living and dead cells. The number of viable cells can be determined by staining the cells with trypan blue or erythrosine B. In trypan blue staining cells appear as unstained whereas dead cells appear as blue.

It encompasses all expressive movements associated with pair formation and mating. “Courtship is the heterosexual communication system that leads to the consummatory sexual act,” says DeMorris. Arthropods, mollusks, fish, reptiles, and mammals are the most affected. It consists of various activities and serves a specific purpose. Many courtship activities ensure that people only mate with people of their species. The distinction between species’ courtship behaviour allows females to identify males of their species. It is concerned with reproductive fitness and provides opportunities for survival

3.1. Conventional farming

Refers to the use of synthetic chemical fertilizers, pesticides, herbicides and other continual inputs, genetically modified organisms, heavy irrigation, intensive tillage and concentrated monoculture production.

Introduction

Modern intensive agriculture systems based on the principles of yield maximization have been plagued with multiple constraints such as declining factor productivity, decreasing resource use efficiency (fertilizers, water, labour etc.), soil organic matter decline, salinization, soil structure degradation, water and wind erosion, reduced water infiltration rates, soil compaction due to surface sealing and crusting, declining ground water table, pest and disease outbreak, weed resistance and weed shifts (Paustian et al., 2016). To address these overwhelming issue, conservation agriculture (CA) has been defined by FAO as a concept of resource saving agricultural crop production which is based on enriching the natural and biological processes above and below ground. The major purpose for its advancement is to reduce the production cost, save resources, enhance yields and utilize resources like nutrient and water efficiently. Conservation tillage denotes soil management system that follows the principle of at least 30% of the soil surface coverage with crop residues after seeding of the crop (Jarecki and Lal, 2003). CA, a resource-efficient agriculture helps to conserve, improve and utilize natural resources efficiently through integrated management of available soil, water and biological resourwces combined with external inputs and thus contributes to environmental conservation as well as enhanced and sustained agricultural production in the long term. The practice and wider extension of conservation agriculture thus requires a deeper understanding of its ecological underpinnings for managing its various elements for sustainable intensification.

ABSTRACT

Microbial contamination is perceived as the most serious threat faced by plant tissue culture research laboratories and commercial production units. A culture is often viewed as contaminated when obvious microbial growth incited by fungi, yeast or bacteria is noticed on the culture medium. On the other hand, there can be situations when microbes may be present in a covert or latent form with serious side effects on the cultures. The present investigations were taken up with the objectives of elucidating the cause of poor growth, lack of regeneration response or modification of rooting observed with visibly clean cultures of different horticultural crops. Apparently clean cultures of grape, banana, watermelon, eggplant, gerbera and chrysanthemum of recent origin or after long-term in vitro culturing were used in this study. Indexing the medium of such cultures using fungal/ yeast and bacteriological media brought out the covert association of one or more bacterial types with varying proportions of incidence in such cultures. Indexing of tissue revealed bacterial presence in different parts of in vitro plantlets. In some instances, bacteria showed endophytic colonization while being not detectable in the tissue culture medium subsequent to a disinfection or antibiotic treatment. Such bacterial association appeared to be the cause of in vitro decline observed with long-term micropropagated cultures, lack of reproducibility of tissue culture protocols, failure of in vitro rooting etc. besides being a threat to in vitro gene banks and germplasm exchange.

The manuscript was completed in February 2020. The book was supposed to be out in print form in April 2020. In between the pandemic changed the world. Obviously, world changing events can’t be left out of the book, particularly if the book is about the future of science, engineering, technology and humanity. I, therefore, requested the publisher of the book for the inclusion of a chapter COVID crisis and its impact on the future of the world. He readily agreed.

I am sincerely grateful to the publisher for allowing me to include issues relevant for the present book, as an additional chapter at the end of the book. The subject at the moment looks unending and it has so many dimensions. I have tried to cover them as briefly as possible, in the context of the book. The pandemic of this proportion is expected to get the views/suggestions from equally large number of people. Everyone is eager to see the end of the pandemic. And everyone has realised that the world will be a much different place. Some people are hopeful that the problems will be resolved, of course using multi-dimensional approaches. Not many are sure of the time frame. There is also pessimism among common people. One of my aunt’s asks me - what kind of research we have been doing all these years that we can’t even face the challenges posed by a mere virus? Has the balloon of the technology busted by a miniscule virus? In this fluid time many questions are being asked, and as many answers are also emerging. It is a big issue. It is as big as that emerged after the Second World War. Some are calling it the ‘birth of a new power’.

Introduction The impact of COVID-19 on the fisheries and food industries of vary, and the situation is rapidly evolving. Fisheries products that are highly dependent on international trade suffered quite early in the development of the pandemic from the restrictions and closures of global markets, whereas fresh fish and shellfish supply chains were severely impacted by the closure of the food service sectors (e.g. hotels, restaurants and catering facilities, including school and work canteens). Although COVID-19 does not fish, the fisheries sector is still have indirect impact in the pandemic caused changing consumer demands, market access or logistical problems related to transportation and border restrictions (Purkait et al., 2020). This will in turn have a damaging the effect on fisheries and aquaculture farmers in livelihoods, as well as on their food security of the populations that rely heavily of the fish for protein and essential micronutrients. The processing sector also faced closures due to reduced/lost consumer demand. This has had a significant impact, especially on women, who form the majority of the workforce in the post-harvest sector (Avtar et al., 2021).

Cow Based Formulations describes traditional agricultural preparations made from cow-derived materials and other locally available ingredients for soil fertility, pest management, disease management, crop growth, and stress management. The chapter covers Ghana Jeevamrutham, Jeevamrutha, Amruthajalam, Amudham solutions, buttermilk-based preparations, and microbial formulations for improving soil fertility. It also presents Neemastram, Agniastram, Brahmastram, Dashparni Kashayam, and related preparations for pest management, followed by BeejAmrutham, Beejaraksha, herbal teas, and other disease-management inputs. Panchagavya, fish amino acid, egg amino acid, vermiwash, and cow dung–asafoetida solution broaden the discussion toward growth promotion and stress management in natural farming. using locally accessible agricultural resources today.

Cowpathy

Panchgavya chikitsa is an age old system of medicine described in ancient Indian literature ‘Ayurveda’ and now it is known as ‘cowpathy’ means the therapy of human ailments through cow products. However, Cowpathy is different from Panchgavya as it also include cow cuddling, Backrub, Gau grass, Gauseva, and living with cow besides, Panchgavya products milk, curd, ghee, urine and dung. Since the cowpathy practice is to increase the aura of an individual, it prevents from many ailments and infections. In Ayurvedic system, the medicines are prepared either from plants or from animals besides the use of certain metals. The Ayurvedic medicines of animal origin are mainly prepared from indigenous cow products such as urine, dung, milk, curd and ghee. Medicinal use of cow urine has been in practice since time immemorial in India.

Botanical description

Cowpea belong to genus Vigna and species unguiculata (L) Walp (Syn V. sinensis Savi) of the family Leguminosae sub family Fabacae.

Floral biology

The flowers of cowpea are hermaphrodite. Self-pollination is effected though with some cross-pollination.

Climate and Soil

Cowpea is a warm season crop, and therefore it can be grown both in spring and in rainy seasons in the plains of India. It cannot tolerate cold weather, heavy rainfall and water logging.

Southern pea / black eyed pea are the other names associate with cowpea. It is grown for vegetable and also as pulse crop and varieties are specific for use.

More emphasis is given for pulse types for crop improvement. Less attention is given to vegetable types. Pole and bush types are available in vegetable type. Cowpea improvement is from vine to bushy habit with low fiber content and low glucosides and increased protein content.
Origin and Distribution: Cowpea is in cultivation from ancient times in the tropics of old world. Country of origin is uncertain. In India, it has been known from the vedic times. Vavilov (1939) considered India as the primary centre of origin. But it is now generally agreed that Africa is centre of origin since wild forms are found in Africa and in Asia wild forms are absent (Smartt, 1990). Faris (1965) concluded that, cowpea arose from domestication of wild form Vigna unguiculata ssp dekindtiana in West Africa. But domestication is actually happened in Ethiopia and dissemination was West wards Africa, East ward across the Indian Ocean. It has spread from Africa to Asia and Europe through Egypt. Introduced to West Indies in 16th century by Spaniards and was taken to USA around 1700. Now cowpea is widely distributed throughout the tropics and subtropics.

Introduction
Q fever is a zoonotic bacterial infection caused by Coxiella burnetii, an obligate intracellular parasite, classified within the family Rickettsiaccae. Q fever (Q for “query”) was first used in 1937 to describe a mysterious febrile illness of packing house workers in Brisbane, Australia. The causative agent was isolated from infected workers and later was identified as Rickettsiae. Almost simultaneously the same organism was identified wood tick collected in Montana. Cox, an American, and Burnet, an Australian, where honored for their early work with this organism, hence the name “Coxiella burnetii”.
Host and Susceptibility
Coxiella burnetii is a well-established infectious agent that has reached a state of balanced pathogenicity in a plethora of host. Human are unnatural and usually dead-end-host. The microorganism generally maintained in a less pathogenic form in separate cycle existing independently among wild mammals and their haematophagus arthropods, principally tick and in domestic animals.
Morphology
It is an intracellular organism which is a polymorphic bacillus (0.2-0.4mm width, 0.4-1.0 mm length), which has a cell membrane, like Gram negative bacteria. However, it stains poorly with pigmented Gram stain, but gimenez staining is traditionally used to stain the Coxiella burnetii pathogen from pathological materials and crop. Coxiella burnetii has several distinctive characteristics, including a sporulationlike
process that protects the organism against the external environment, where it can survive for long periods. In mammals, the usual host cell of C. burnetii is the macrophage, which is unable to kill the bacterium. The other an important characteristic of C. burnetii is its antigenic variations, those called phase variation. This antigenic shift can be measured and is valuable for differentiating acute from chronic Q fever. Thus, it displays two antigenic phases those are phase-I and phase- II that are liable to the Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of the membrane.

Abstract
Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) has much bigger implications for inclusive development of the any country. It reduces dependency on the government for social expenditure and helps in speedy inclusive growth. The scale of CSR emerged significantly in the last decade in India. Since business houses required doing business in the society it would be an obligation on their part to share a small portion of their profit for the betterment of society. To relate fundamental business philosophy to make CSR sharper, smarter, and focused is what really matters and is the core part of any business in the 21st business philosophy century. However, critiques are emerging on the recent Government bill on CSR which makes mandatory on the part of the companies to spend a small portion of their profit for the social causes. Many companies have invested noted share of profits in various social development sectors. Also, there is research evidence to show that CSR work of the companies have reached where government could not reach so for. However, there are some reports showing most of the companies have not even have CSR policies yet. All though various Indian corporate involved in CSR activities; it is not enough when contrast to their actual financial strength. The scientific name, Lagerstroemia, was coined in 1759 by Carl Linnaeus, who described and named the plant in honour of “Magnus von Lagerstroem”, an avid naturalist and director of the Swedish East Indies Company. Crape myrtle derives its common name from its crepe-like, crinkled petals, and the resemblance of its leaves to the true myrtle, Myrtus communis. “Crape myrtle” is a peculiarly-American term. Elsewhere in the world, “Lagerstroemia” is often used as the common name for crape myrtle (Knox, 2003).

Crape myrtle is the smaller version of Lagerstroemia speciosa, commonly known as Pride of India or Queen crape myrtle. The deciduous crape myrtle is among the longest blooming trees in existence with flowering periods lasting from 60-120 days. Crapes come in heights as short as 46 cm and as tall as 12 m. Leaves are alternate and smooth, but leaf size depends on variety. Flowers are borne in summer in big showy clusters and come in white and many shades of pink, purple, lavender and red. The bark is a prominent feature being smooth, pinkinsh-gray and mottled, shedding each year. Leaves are small and dark green changing to yellow and orange in autumn. When the leaves fall in winter, crape myrtle becomes a living sculpture. The trunk and branches of tree-form plants have an attractively gnarled, sinuous character with smooth bark. Seeds are narcotic. In Manipur, flowers and leaves are used as purgatives. Bark is stimulant and febrifuge (fever removing). Roots are astringent and used as gargle.

INTRODUCTION

Crataegus species, or hawthorn, are shrubs or small trees that have been widely and globally used for treating cardiac problems (arrhythmia, angina, hypertension and gastrointestinal ailments. Fruits of the plant are also consumed as food and nutritional supplement. Crataegus species has several pharmacological properties attributable primarily to presence of flavonoids and anthocyanins. The major flavonoids reported are hyperoside, vitexin, and glycosylated derivatives of these compounds. Crataegus has been listed as the plant for future in terms of its utility and significance. Though the species can be easily grown, its commercial cultivation is not yet popular. This presentation highlights the medicinal significance of the species for its greater utilization.

Definition

It is one of the important portion of milk which forms a fatty layer on top of milk when left un-disturbed. It is a prime component of milk and comprises mainly of milk fat. It may be defined as “that portion of milk which is rich in milk fat” meaning portion of milk into which larger portion of milk fat has been gathered.  According to FSSAI, 2011 Malai and Cream are defined as –

Malai means the product rich in butter fat prepared by boiling and cooling cow or buffalo milk or a combination thereof. It shall contain not less than 25.0 per cent milk fat.

16.1 Introduction
The fluid product “Cream” is defined by FSSAI standards as an emulsion of fat-in-skimmed milk that is comparatively rich in fat. It is derived by physical separation from cow milk, buffalo milk, or milk of any other species as defined under this regulation, or a mixture thereof. Cream, with the exception of sterilized variants, is composed of a minimum of 25% milk fat and is derived from cow or buffalo milk or a combination of both. It is a high-energy source that is abundant in fat and fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. The vitamin content is contingent upon the fat percentage in the cream.
16.2 Classification
Cream may be broadly classified into Market cream (direct consumption) and Manufacturing cream (manufacture of dairy products). The three different types of cream are:
i. Table cream/Light cream contains 20-25% milk fat.
ii. Coffee cream/ Whipping cream Contains 30-40 % milk fat, and
iii. Heavy cream/Plastic cream contains 65-85 % milk fat.
As per FSSAI Standards, Cream may be labeled according to milk fat content (m/m) along with product name as specified in item 1 of this Standard, as follows:
i. Low fat cream: Minimum 10 per cent. and less than 40 per cent.;
ii. Medium fat cream: Minimum 40 per cent. and less than 60 per cent.;
iii. High fat cream: Minimum 60 per cent.

Butter is one of the leading milk product in developed countries of the world. It serves as a balance wheel of dairy industry. Surplus milk is generally converted into butter to be used during the times of scarcity. It is an article of commerce and a sign if wealth. Butter is a fat concentrate, which is obtained by churning cream, gathering the fat into a compact mass and then working it for proper distribution of moisture and salt. The art of butter making has a long history. The manufacture of butter was confined to colder regions where gravity creaming was successful. The milk was allowed to stand undisturbed for 10-12 hours until layer of cream collects at the top.

As time passes, the customers are used to the practice of having short life for the products, which they buy and use. Abstract

This chapter examines how agricultural credit is a vital input for all agricultural development programmes. Private moneylenders used to be the main source of agricultural credit. However, this source was insufficient, costly and oppressive. To overcome this, a multi-agency approach involving cooperatives, commercial banks and regional rural banks has been adopted to provide cheaper, timely and adequate credit to farmers.

For uplifting the socio economic conditions of the poor mass, government enacted many programmes to make available of institutional credit flow to the farmers almost at their doorstep at a reasonable rate of interest. However, Credit can serve useful purpose only when it is used for productive purpose to generate additional income. Otherwise, its deviation for non productive purposes would affect the repaying capacity of borrowers and create over due and defaulters. Increasing default in the repayment of loan led to very serious implication, for instances, it discourages the financial institutions to refinancing to the defaulting members.

Himalayan region is known for the diversity of its cultural heritage and climate. In Indian part, this mountain range includes states of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. The climatic variability of the region,from sub-tropical to extreme dry temperate, offers great attraction to naturalists, all across the globe. The forest formations here are the natural habitats of a large number of flora and fauna. The flora found in these forests varies with the altitudinal gradient and is quite distinct. In the sub-tropical Himalayas, for example,the predominant vegetation is of deciduous type consisting of trees, shrubs, scrubs, climbers and xerophytes. Man-made Chir pine forests can also be witnessed. At middle elevation, the climate is sub-temperate and supports a mix of broad leaves and pines forests.In the high reaches including Trans Himalayas, climate is typically wet or dry temperate. In the wet temperate climate, evergreen forests are the predominant vegetation, whereas, the dry temperate areas do not support any significant vegetation.This variation in climate and altitude has a great impact on the biodiversity found in the region, and represents about seven percent of the country’s total biodiversity.

Among this diversity, many valuable and rare medicinal and aromatic plants grow wild in the region. The herbs which are traded from this region are of immense value for the preparation of Ayurvedic drugs in the form of monoherbal preparations or as multi-compound herbal formulations. Charak Samhita mentions that the herbs of the Himalayan forests excel in efficacy.

Crimean Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) was first reported in the 12^th century as a hemorrhagic syndrome in present day Tajikistan. However, in the modern era, the first outbreak of the CCHF was reported in 1944-1945 in the Crimea region with more than 200 cases and the disease was called Crimean Hemorrhagic Fever. Ten years later in 1956, the virus was isolated from a febrile patient in Belgian Congo and this isolate was noted to have the same antigenic structure with the Crimean strains. For this reason, the virus was called Crimean Congo Hemorrhagic Fever. Nowadays, outbreaks of CCHF have been documented in Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe, and Western Asia including India. CCHF is a severe hemorrhagic fever with a case fatality rate of up to 50%.

Etiology: It is a tick-borne viral disease belonging to the family Bunyaviridae, genus Nairovirus. Like other Nairoviruses, CCHF virus is an enveloped single stranded negative-sense RNA virus and its tripartite genome consists of a small (S), a medium (M) and large (L) segment which encode for the nucleocapsid protein (NP), the envelope glycoproteins G1 and G2 and an RNA-dependent polymerase, respectively. The virus is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected ticks or by direct contact with viremic animals or humans. Infected humans can spread the disease via close contacts which may result in community outbreaks and nosocomial infections. It is an important human pathogen and could be used as a bioterrorism agent.

Pathogenesis: The pathogenesis of CCHF is not well understood. A common pathogenic feature of hemorrhagic fever viruses is their ability to disable the host immune response by attacking and manipulating the cells that initiate the antiviral response. This damage is characterized by marked replication of the virus together with dysregulation of the vascular system and lymphoid organs. Endothelial damage contributes to hemostatic failure by stimulating platelet aggregation and degranulation, with consequent activation of the intrinsic coagulation cascade. DIC is noted as an early and prominent feature of the disease process. In another study, the levels of interleukin IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-alpha were higher among patients who subsequently died as compared to survivors. The DIC score was higher among fatal cases, correlating positively with IL-6 and TNF alpha levels, and negatively with IL-10 levels. These findings demonstrate that proinflammatory cytokines play a major role in pathogenesis and mortality of patients with CCHF.

Identifying agricultural crops correctly is an essential operation for resource management to be used efficiently in the hope that businesses meet regulatory standards and do their share in stopping trade-related fraudulent activities with incorrect labeling. The early and exact identification process helps pest and disease control because different crop species need different levels of resistance management (Rahayu et al., 2025). A reliable identification methodology remains important because sustainable agricultural practices and climate-ready crop varieties reach higher popularity in current times. The identification method based on morphological classification takes too much time and gets misdirected because of environmental conditions (Mascellino et al., 2024). High-resolution satellite data together with advanced computational tools needed for remote sensing-based identification cannot easily be accessed by small-scale farmers (Sharma et al., 2024).
The high specific identification of crop species becomes achievable through CRISPR-based technology which utilizes genetic markers as its primary feature. CRISPR enables fast and exact and affordable crop classification through its ability to detect and analyze specific genetic patterns. The accuracy of crop identification improves while real-time evaluation of plant diversity alongside disease. Alert traits becomes achievable through this method (Kanapiya et al., 2024). CRISPR-based biosensors have experienced recent advancements that enabled portable field-deployable identification tools which eliminate the need for complex laboratory setups (Lagener et al., 2025). Crossbreeding entails mating an elite recipient line with a donor line to generate offspring with desired traits, which are subsequently backcrossed with the recipient line over multiple generations to remove any unintended linked traits.
