Crowdsourcing is a concept that involves obtaining information, ideas, or services from a large group of people, often through an online platform. This approach has become increasingly popular in recent years, particularly with the rise of social media, mobile devices, and other digital technologies. In the context of agriculture, crowdsourcing can be used to collect data on various aspects of farming, such as crop yields, soil conditions, and weather patterns. This data can be used to provide farmers with valuable insights and advice on best practices for farm management. One of the key benefits of crowdsourcing in agriculture is that it allows farmers to share knowledge and expertise with each other. By pooling their collective knowledge and experience, farmers can gain a better understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing their industry, and develop more effective strategies for overcoming them (Fig.7.1).
For example, a crowdsourcing platform might allow farmers to share data on crop yields and soil conditions. This data could then be used to create detailed maps of soil types and conditions, which could be used to provide farmers with advice on optimal planting and harvesting schedules.
Another example of crowdsourcing in agriculture is the use of mobile apps to collect data on weather patterns. By collecting data from a large number of

This cosmopolitan family of about 375 genera and over 4,060 species, occur chiefly in north temperate regions, especially in the Mediterranean region. About 50 genera and over 140 species have so far been reported from India. Some of the larger genera, along with their reported number of species from the world in parenthesis, include Draba (300), Cardamine (160), Lepidium (150), Alyssum (150), Arabis (120), Erysimum (100), Sisymbrium (90), Heliophila (75), Rorippa (70), Iberis (30) and Raphanus (8). Majority of Crucifers produce an abundance of vitamin C. Characteristic pungent odour of its members is because of sulphur compounds.
Selected Indian Genera and Species
• Vegetables: Several common vegetables of daily use belong to this family. Some of them are radish (Raphanus sativus), cauliflower (B. oleracea var. botrytis), Brussel’s sprout (B. oleracea var. gemmifera), sengri (B. sativus var. caudatus), etc.
• Oils: Fatty oil, used for cooking, pickles, bruning, massaging, etc. is obtained from the seeds of several species of this family. Mustard oil is obtained from several species of Brassica such as B. campestris var. sarson and B. campestris var. toria (Indian rape). Oil is also obtained from the seeds of B. juncea var. cuneifolia (Rai), B. alba (white mustard). The oil cake left after the extraction of oil, is a good cattle feed.

Diamond back moth: Plutella xylostella: Plutellidae
 
The adults of this moth are small, greyish brown having pale whitish narrow wings and with inner margins yellow. There are three pale whitish triangular markings on hind margins of each forewing. At rest, when both forewings come together, they form a dorsal median patch of three diamond shaped yellowish white spots that give them their name diamond back moth. Hind wings have a fringe of long hairs.

1. Alternaria leaf spot
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Spots are small, dark coloured.
• They enlarge, soon become circular & 1mm. in diameter.
• Under humid conditions groups of conidiophores will be formed in the spot.
• Spots develop concentric rings.
• Finally the spots coalesce leading to blighting of leaves.
• Pathogen is seed borne and cause shriveling of seeds and poor germination.
• Linear spots also appear on petioles, stems, pods & seeds (Fig.1).

Crust is characterized by the presence of desquamated squamous epithelial cells. The dried exudate consists of necrotic cell debris, leucocytes, RBC’s, plasma proteins and microorganisms. It is classified into serous crust (eosinophilic protein exudates), hemorrhagic crust (RBC’s), cellular crust (degenerative leucocytes mainly neutrophils), serocellular crust (mixture of serum or plasma or leucocytes) and palisadic crust (presence of leucocytic infiltration, pustules and parakeratosis organized in a horizontal manner).

Early passage cell lines are relatively unstable and go through a period of adaptation to culture. However, between 5^th and 35^th generation (human diploid fibroblasts), the culture is fairly consistent although it varies from one cell to another cell. Finite cell lines should be preserved after adaptation but before senescence (getting older). Cells should be preserved to protect cell line instability, availability in case of contamination, incubator failure or accidental loss.

Introduction

The protocol below describes the use of cell freezing methods involving an electric -80°C freezer for the cryopreservation of cell lines. ECACC routinely use a programmable rate-controlled freezer. This is the most reliable and reproducible way to freeze cells but as the cost of such equipment is beyond the majority of research laboratories the methods below are described in detail. If large numbers of cell cultures are regularly being frozen then a programmable rate-controlled freezer is recommended.

Materials

• Freeze medium (commonly 90% FBS, 10% DMSO or glycerol

• 70% (v/v) alcohol in sterile water

• PBS without Ca2+/Mg2+ • 0.05% trypsin/EDTA in HBSS, without Ca2+/Mg2+

• DMSO

Deep freezing or cryopreservation of semen refers to freezing and storage of semen at –79ºC using dry ice and alcohol or at -196ºC using LN2 as refrigerant. Cryopreservation of semen was first attempted by Parkes in 1945. But cryopreservation of semen received a boost by discovery of glycerol a cryoprotectant by Polge in 1949.  Bull semen was first successfully frozen by Stewart in 1951. Cooling rate is a vital factor determining the post thaw survival of the sperm cells. Cell death occurs in rapid freezing due to formation of intracellular and possibly extracellular ice. In contrast slow cooling rates cause cell death due to diffusion of intracellular fluid into the extender, which then become increasingly hypertonic as the extender’s water freezes causing intracellular osmotic damage as the cell dehydrates. Hence, the cooling rate needs to be balanced in a way that it is neither too fast to cause cell death due to cold shock nor too slow to result the same due to osmotic shock. Ultra rapid freezing gives excellent morphological preservation but with poor retention of functions on thawing due to large number of minute crystal formation.

A useful method for quickly preparing tissue slides for microscopic analysis is the frozen section technique. There are numerous clinical and research contexts where the frozen section technique is employed. For quick intraoperative diagnosis in histopathology, frozen sections are frequently utilized, giving our surgical colleagues direction. To ascertain the extent of excision required to remove a skin tumour, the surgeon doing Mohs Micrographic Surgery depends solely on the frozen sections. The frozen section technique is used in many scientific applications to create microscopic slides using a variety of complex morphologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular techniques. There are several uses for frozen sections, including rapid diagnosis, immunohistochemistry, enzyme histochemistry, lipid detection, cancer margin research, and more. Making frozen section slides is a difficult technical procedure that calls for the mastery of advanced technical abilities in addition to knowledge of the pathology, microanatomy, and histology of the tissues under investigation. The outcomes will depend on our capacity to produce a high-quality preparation, whether it is utilized for research or intraoperative consulting. Dr. Louis B. Wilson’s 1905 description served as the basis for the frozen section technique used in medical labs today. At the request of surgeon Dr. William Mayo, one of the founders of the Mayo Clinic, Wilson devised the procedure based on previous studies. A frozen section was also used in earlier reports by Dr. Thomas S. Cullen of Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, but only after formalin fixation. Dr. William Welch, a pathologist at Hopkins, also tried Cullen’s technique, but there were no negative clinical effects. Wilson is therefore widely acknowledged as having really invented the procedure.

Etiology

Cryptococcosis (KRIP-toe-cock-co-sis) is caused by the fungus, Cryptococcus neoformans (KRIP-toe-cock-kus knee-O-for-mans). It is found worldwide and primarily affects cats and people with weak immune systems.

Cryptosporidiosis is a protozoan disease.

1. C. meleagridis: Infects small intestine.
2. C. baileyi: Infects digestive tract (bursa of Fabricius and cloaca), kidneys and respiratory tract.

Chemically, sugar candies are broadly divided into two groups: crystalline candies and amorphous or non crystallized candies. Crystalline candies are not as hard as crystals of the mineral variety, but derive their name and their texture from their microscopically organized sugar structure, formed through a process of crystallization, which makes them easy to bite or cut into. Fudge, creams, and fondant are examples of crystalline candies. Amorphous candies have a disorganized crystalline structure. They usually have higher sugar concentrations, and the texture may be chewy, hard, or brittle. Hard candies, such as lollipops, caramels, nut brittles and toffees are all examples of amorphous candies, even though some of them are as hard as rocks and resemble crystals in their overall appearance. Crystalline candies are chemically described as having two phases, because the tiny, solid sugar crystals are suspended in a thick liquid solution. These are also called grained candies, because they can have a grainy texture. Amorphous candies are have only one phase, which is either solid or liquid, and do not have a grainy texture, so they may be called ungrained.

Commercially, candies are often divided into three groups, according to the amount of sugar they contain:

3.1 Introduction

Crystallography is the science of crystals. The term crystal is derived from the Greek word “Crystallos” which means “ice”. The term was used for colorless quartz which was believed to be “fossilized” ice. Crystals are bodies bounded by flat surface, arranged on a definite plan which is an expression of the internal arrangement of the atoms. They are formed by consolidation of magma which is also considered as crystallization.

3.2 Terms in Use to Describe a "Crystal"

3.2.1 Faces

Faces are the plane surface in a crystal. The common faces are usually parallel to net planes containing the greatest number of lattice points or ions. Wide spacing between the net planes leads to development of faces in these planes. Faces are two types like and unlike faces.

The Mineral Kingdom presents a dazzling floral-display in the form of natural crystals. This is what makes mineralogy a very fascinating subject both for an amateur as well as an expert. Unless one visits the celebrated Lechuguilla cave in New Mexcio, USA it will be difficult to visualize the breathtaking beauty that crystals present. This, over 160 km cave is lined with gigantic as well as delicate gypsum crystals- as thin as human hair to several centimetres across and 6 m long . Crystals come in all shapes, sizes and colours. Their beauty and regular shape has not only attracted the scientists but made them objects of magical and mythical powers in many cultures of the world.

The study of crystals - including their growth, structure, classification by form and their physical properties forms the subject of crystallography. As of today one can’t think of this subject without x-ray crystallography, however, this being not in your syllabus only an introduction will be presented in the last chapter, while the entire section will be devoted to fundamental aspects of crystal morphology.

The section comprises four chapters. Chapter I describes and introduces the theme, presents a brief historical background of the development of the subject and gives some fundamental definitions. Chapter II presents the morphological elements including symmetry elements( plane, axes and centre of symmetry), parameters, indices, notation of crystal faces and other related aspects which are the basis for dividing crystals of all shapes and sorts into six or seven systems and several sub-types. This chapter will help you understand as to why mineral galena belongs to cubic system, while gypsum is monoclinic, or as to why an octahedron is represented by a symbol (111) but a cube with (100). Chapter III describes the seven systems and their sub-types and ends with an account of twinning- a curious feature quite often encountered among crystals. The section ends with a preliminary idea about stereographic projection and x-ray crystallography.

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus var. sativus L., 2x = 2n = 14, normally monoecious, cross-pollinated) is a member of the economically important family Cucurbitaceae which includes squash/pumpkin (Cucurbita ssp.), watermelon [Citrullus lanatus (Thunb.) Matsum. & Nakai], melon (Cucumis melo L.) and gourds. After tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) and watermelon, cucumber and melon are cultivated more widely than any other vegetable species globally accounting for about 2.5 million ha and producing 43 million tons giving a productivity of over 17 tons/ha under field and greenhouse culture. Production of cucumber is the second largest of all cucurbits, where China, Iran, Russia, Turkey and the United States represent about 75% of the world production.

During 2017-18, India produced 1.25 million tons of cucumber from 0.08 million ha (80, 000) area resulting into a productivity of close to 16 tons/ha (MAFW, 2018). Top ten cucumber producing states in India in the same period are Haryana (17000 ha), MP (9500 ha), Karnataka (8300 ha), Assam (6900 ha), Maharashtra (4500 ha), Andhra Pradesh (4400 ha), Bihar (3900 ha), Punjab (3600 ha), Kerala (3400 ha) and UP (3300 ha).

Cucumber, both slicing and pickling types, is one of the most popular vegetable crops of the family Cucurbitaceae. Like other cucurbitaceous crops, the cucumber also requires a warm season for commercial cultivation and has little or no tolerance to frost. Temperatures above 20°C are optimal for cucumber growth and development. Currently, its cultivars are generally classified as either pickling or slicing types, each with its own set of quality attributes. Pickling types typically have more prominent warts (tubercles) and lighter-coloured skin. They are harvested more frequently at the immature stage, when their length and diameter (LD) ratios are lower. The LD ratio for pickles typically falls within the range of 2.8 to 3.2. On the other hand, slicing cucumbers are harvested and commonly sold in lengths ranging from 12 to 25 cm, with diameters ranging from 1.5 to nearly 7.5 cm. Most slicing cucumbers have cylindrical-shaped fruit with blocky or slightly rounded ends that taper slightly from the stem to the blossom end. Generally, slicers have an LD ratio greater than 4.0, a smooth surface, and thicker skin compared to pickling types. This difference is accentuated because slicers are harvested at later stages of maturity than pickling cucumbers.

Cucumber, Cucumis sativus under the family Cucurbitaceae (Chromosome No: 2n = 2× =14) is grown throughout the world for consumption of fresh and tender fruits as slicing cucumber, and for pickles as pickling cucumber. Slicing cucumbers are usually larger and have thicker skins, while pickling cucumbers are usually smaller and have thinner skins. The flesh of cucumbers is rich vitamin C, and folic acid, fibre and a range of minerals including magnesium, molybdenum and potassium.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
The genus Cucumis, which includes cucumber (Cucumis sativus) and melon (Cucumis melo), has numerous wild African species, and it has therefore been assumed that
melon originated in Africa. For cucumber, this seemed less likely because wild cucumbers exist in India and a closely related species, Cucumis hystrix is available in the Eastern Himalayas. Using DNA sequences from plastid and nuclear markers for some 100 Cucumis accessions from Africa, Australia, and Asia, Sebastian et al (2010) concluded that melon and cucumber are of Asian origin and have numerous previously overlooked species-level relatives in Australia and around the Indian Ocean.

Vegetable crops belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae are known as cucurbits. These include 950 species in over 90 genera, mainly distributed in the tropics and subtropics (Schaefer and Renner, 2011). Enormous diversity of cucurbit genetic resources has evolved in past centuries to cater the nutritional requirements of people in different geographical and climatic regions. A large number of cucurbitaceous vegetables coming from different centres of origin are cultivated worldwide (Table 1). However, these crops are challenged by several biotic and abiotic stresses. Cultivated varieties are constrained by market demands, the necessity for climatic adaptations, domestication bottlenecks, and in most cases, limited capacity for interspecific hybridization, creating narrow genetic bases for crop improvement. Genetic resources are the building block for any crop improvement programme and includes landraces, traditional varieties, wild, weedy and other related species constituting primary, secondary and tertiary gene pools. They are valuable sources of important genetic traits needed for developing resilient and climate smart crop varieties and therefore, important for food security. The success and pace of the development depends on the efficient use of plant genetic resources. Wild relatives are incredible genetic resources carrying several desirable attributes like nutritional quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses etc. Most of the crop wild relatives of cultivated crops across the world are not receiving adequate attention for their effective utilization in breeding programs. It is therefore, of utmost priority to protect them in the wild, through in-situ conservation, where they can continue to evolve and develop these useful adaptations. ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR) is the nodal agency for the management of national wealth of vegetable genetic resources speciallyworking for collections, characterization, identification and documentation of new germplasm. Besides, it also bears the responsibility for conservation of the germplasm for future through sustainable use. The Vegetable germplasm is being conserved both under in-situ and ex-situ genebanks. This chapter highlights the status of Cucurbit genetic resources and procedures to access the germplasm by various stakeholders for research use.
 

Bitter Gourd

Genetic Resources

Bitter gourd or balsam pear (Momordica charantia L.) is one of the most popular cucurbitaceous vegetable, commonly cultivated in many countries. Probably, India is the centre of origin and secondary centre of diversity of this crop. Bitter gourd is an annual monoecious herb, belongs to the genus Momordica that comprises 60 species. Out of these, only M. charantia, M. cochinchinensis, M. dioica, M. balsamina (balsam apple), M. cymbalaria (syn. M. tuberosa) are under cultivation. Momordica charantia is grown all over the country in tropical and subtropical climates and rich genetic diversity occurs in northern plains including tarai region, the northern-western plains, the central region/plateau and the western and eastern peninsular regions. Kakrol (M. dioica) is cultivated in West Bengal, Assam, parts of Bihar, while sweet gourd (M. cochinchinensis) is popular particularly in Tripura, Assam, Andaman Nicobar, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. M. denundata (Thw) Clarke (syn. M. dioica var. denundatais) is found abundantly in Kerala, M. macrophylla in Assam and M. sabangulata Blume is commonly found in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Meghalaya and Sikkim. In India, NBPGR , New Delhi, and IIVR, Varanasi, are actively engaged in the collection of bitter gourd germplasms.The NBPGR, New Delhi, has evaluated 33 collections for 37 characteristics. Variability has been reported in vine length (105-335 cm), number of primary branches (3-7), number of fruits/plant (1-25), fruit girth (8-27 cm), fruit length (9.5-20 cm) and fruit yield/plant (0.5-2.8 kg). Accessions, UB-22, UB-66, IC-74158, C-1621 and K-3374, have been found better yielder. At IIVR, Varanasi, 121 genotypes have been evaluated for yield and yield-contributing traits. VRB-40 & IC-44415A have been identified as promising lines. Accessions showing better charecters for different traits are given below (Ghosh and Kalloo, 2000):

A. CUCUMBER, MELONS, PUMPKIN AND SQUASHES

Cucumber (Khira)

Cucurbits account for the largest group of tropical vegetables, consisting of cucumber, muskmelon, bitter gourd, bottle gourd, ridge gourd, sponge gourd, snake gourd, pointed gourd, bitter gourd, ivy gourd, wax or ash gourd, chow chow or chayote, pumpkin, summer squash, winter squash, watermelon etc. They all belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae. They are herbaceous in nature and are characterized by tendril-bearing vines and adaptation to warm climate of the tropics and subtropics. Among the different genera of cucurbit vegetables, three genera viz., Cucumis (cucumbers, melons), Cucurbita (pumpkins, squash), and Citrullus (watermelons), are economically important in the world while the others hold regional importance. Most of the cucurbits are grown for its immature fruits and are consumed as salads or cooked vegetable. While, muskmelon and watermelon are used fresh as dessert fruits. Pumpkin and squashes are used in confectionaries besides as cooked vegetables. Mature ash gourd fruits are used in sweet candy preparation.

Cucurbits are low in calories, minerals, or vitamins. However, bitter gourd is rich source of vitamin C, the squash, pointed gourd, and muskmelon contain good amounts of carotene, kakrol is high in protein, and pointed gourd is rich in calcium. Bitterness in some species of cucurbits was attributed by the varying degree of bitter principles, cucurbitacin. Bitter gourd is known for its hypoglycemic activity due to phytoceutical, cheratin in the fruit, which lowers blood sugar level.

1) Downy Mildew
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Yellow, angular spots restricted by veins resembling mosaic mottling appear on upper surface of leaves .
• Corresponding lower surface of these spots shows a purplish downy xgrowth in moist weather.
• Spots turn necrotic with age.
• Diseased leaves become yellow and fall down .
• Diseased plants get stunted and die .
• Fruits produced may not mature and have a poor taste (Fig.-1).

Cucumber

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus) is a warm season vegetable used as salad and for pickling purpose has little or no frost tolerance.  Growth and development favoured  by temperature above 200C.  Cucumber cultivars generally classified as pickling or slicing types. In India often cucumbers (Cucumis sativus) are confused with melons (Cucumis melo ) as morphologically some variants of these species overlap, but they are not cross compatible. Kakri of North India are different from kakri of South India and Maharashtra. In Maharastra and South India cucumbers are referred as kakri but, in North India Kakri means Long melon i.e. Cucumis melo Var. utilissima.

1.1 Introduction

‘Cucurbits’ is a term coined by Liberty Hyde Bailey for cultivated species of the family Cucurbitacae. During this current century the term has been used not only for cultivated forms, but also for any species of the family Cucurbitacae. Cucurbits are frost sensitive, predominantly tendril-bearing vines which are found in subtropical regions around the globe. A few numbers of species those are native to or cultivated in temperate climate are prolific seed producing annuals or perennials that live for one season until killed by frost (Robinson and Decker-Walters 2004). Other vernaculars applied to the family Cucurbitacae and several of its members are ‘gourd’, ‘melon’, ‘cucumber’, ‘squash’ and ‘pumpkin’.

Fruit flies: Bactrocera cucurbitae:Tephritidae

This pest is more serious in bitter gourd, snake gourd and to a certain extent on ridge gourd. Other cucurbits are attacked to a lesser level. Damage by this pest causes losing the fruit quality, rotting and fruit drop. The adults lay many eggs inside the fruit sing their big ovipositor that hatch out into worm like apodous maggots. Feeding by the maggots on the pulp of fruits result in rotting, yellowing and fruit drop. The dropped fruits allow pupation by the maggots in the soil from where they emerge out as adults and start egg laying on fresh frits.

Crops belonging to family Cucurbitaceae are generally known as ‘Cucurbits’. It consists of a wide range of vegetables either used for salad purpose (cucumber) or for cooking (all gourds), pickling (West Indian gherkin) or as dessert fruit (muskmelon, water melon) or candied or preserved (ash gourd).  As a group, cucurbits occupy the largest area in India and in other tropical countries. Its use is not primarily because of calories, minerals or vitamins since they are generally low to moderate in nutrients with a few exceptions like bitter gourd (rich in vitamin C- 96mg/100g), pumpkin (vitamin A 1600 IU/100g ), Kakrol (high protein  3.1g/100g,), parwal and chow chow (calcium- 531 mg and  140 mg / 100 g respectively). From the nutritional point of view, cucurbit seeds are valued for their high oil and protein contents.  Seed proteins of cucurbits are comparable to that of legumes and are richer in methionine.

The Cucurbitaceae family consists of nearly 100 genera and over 750 species. Although most of them have Old World origin (Whitaker and Davis, 1962), many species originated in the New World and at least seven genera have origins in both hemispheres (Esquinas-Alcazar and Gulick, 1983). There is considerable genetic diversity within the family and the range of adaptation for cucurbit species includes tropical and subtropical regions, arid deserts and temperate locations. A few species are adaptable to production at elevations as high as 2000 m. The genetic diversity in cucurbits extends to both vegetative and reproductive characteristics. There is considerable range in the monoploid (x) chromosome number (Jeffrey, 1990) including 7 (Cucumis sativus), 11 (Citrullus spp., Momordica spp., Lagenaria spp., Sechium spp., and Trichosanthes spp.), 12 (Benincasa hispida, Coccinia spp., Cucumis spp. other than C. sativus, and Praecitrullus fistulosus), 13 (Luffa spp.), and 20 (Cucurbita spp.).
 
Archaeological evidence indicated that cucurbits were present in ancient and prehistoric cultures. Lagenaria was associated with man as early as 12,000 BC in Peru (Esquinas-Alcazar and Gulick, 1983). Archaeological expeditions in the Oaxaca region of Mexico have reported that Cucurbita pepo was associated with man as early as 8500 BC and cultivated by 4050 BC (Esquinas-Alcazar and Gulick, 1983). Written Chinese records describing the use of cultivated cucurbits have been found as early as 685 BC (Herklots, 1972).

Cucurbits form an important and a big group of vegetable crops cultivated extensively in this country. This group consists of a wide range of vegetables, either used as salads (cucumber) or for cooking (all the gourds) or for pickling (cucumber) or as dessert fruits (muskmelon and watermelon) or candied or preserved (ash gourd). They are of tremendous economic importance as food plants.

2.1. Ash Gourd (Benincasa hispida)

Ash gourd (Benincasa hispida L.) belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae. The winter melon, also called white gourd, ash gourd, or “fuzzy melon”, is a vine grown for its very large fruit, eaten as a vegetable when mature. It is the only member of the genus Benincasa. This is a monotypic genus and the only cultivated species is Benincasa hispida (Thunb) Cogn, commonly known as ash gourd or petha. It has a Sanskrit equivalent ‘Kooshmanda’ indicating its antiquity in India.

Originally cultivated in Southeast Asia, the ash gourd is widely grown in China, India and other parts of East Asia. The immature melon has thick white flesh that is sweet when eaten. By maturity, the fruit loses its hairs and develops a waxy coating, giving rise to the name wax gourd, and providing a long shelf life. The ash gourd is known by many other names in India regional wise like komora (Assamese), pethakaddu (Hindi), boodagumbala (Kannada), Kumbalanga (Malayalam), Kohla (Marathi), neer poosanikai (Tamil) and Boodida gummadikaya (Telugu).

Uses

Ash gourd have enormous medicinal properties as it makes a valuable place as a popular natural cure of ailments in traditional medicinal practice. Being low in calories it is an ideal vegetable for diabetic patients and good for weight control. It also acts as a good detoxifying agent.

As per Ayurveda, ash gourd is used to treat epilepsy, asthma, lung diseases, urine retention, internal haemorrhage, and cough. It is said that the fruit juice is also effective in cases of mercury poisoning and snakebite. It could also treat mouth cancer, protecting teeth and gums when a mouth gargle of the juice is done regularly. It is also effective in bleeding of gums. Ash gourd is easily digestible and keeps the body cool. It is a natural blood purifier.

Crops belonging to family Cucurbitaceae are generally known as ‘Cucurbits’. It consists of a wide range of vegetables either used for salad purpose (cucumber) or for cooking (all gourds), pickling (West Indian gherkin) or as dessert fruit (muskmelon, water melon) or candied or preserved (ash gourd). As a group, cucurbits occupy the largest area in India and in other tropical countries. Its use is not primarily because of calories, minerals or vitamins since they are generally low to moderate in nutrients with a few exceptions like bitter gourd (rich in vitamin C- 96mg/100g), pumpkin (vitamin A 1600 IU/100g), Kakrol (high protein 3.1g/100g,), parwal and chow chow (calcium- 531 mg and 140 mg / 100 g respectively). From the nutritional point of view, cucurbit seeds are valued for their high oil and protein contents. Seed proteins of cucurbits are comparable to that of legumes and are richer in methionine.

The family Cucurbitaceae comprises about 117 genera and 825 species in warmer parts. Chakravarthy (1982) estimated 36 genera and 100 species in India.

Food Animals are the main protein source for human nutrition in the world.Sub-therapeutic doses of antibiotics are commonly used in food animal production, through their addition in feed and wateras antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs). Animal production is considered one of the main sources of antimicrobial resistances (AMR), thus the research for alternative strategies to the use of antibiotics in animal diet is essential to f ight the emergence of AMR. Currently, AMR causes the death of 700,000 people per year and it is forecasted that this will increase exponentially to 10 million by 2050, becoming the main cause of death worldwide.The reduction of antimicrobial resistance is a major challenge for the scientific community. In a few decades, infections by resistant bacteria are forecasted to be the main cause of death in the world. The withdrawal of antibiotics as growth promoters and their preventive use in animal production is essential to avoid these resistances, but this may impair productivity and health due to the increase in gut inflammation. The best alternative to Antibiotic growth promoters (AGPs) is a general improvement of conditions for food animals. In order to start a reformation of the Food Animal Industry as a whole, it’s essential to research to find out effective, resistance rare, low toxic and affordable alternatives to antibiotic growth promoters. Culinary herbs derived bioactives may be the promising products to address this challenge because it is traditionally proven to restore the gastrointestinal health due to beneficial effects on microbiota composition, mucosal barrier integrity, and immune system to control inflammation.

their starchy seeds, which are scientifically referred to as caryopsis. These plants, along with cereal fodders and grasses, typically exhibit a determinate growth pattern and the quality of their herbage tends to decline following the flowering stage.
Kharif Crop (Hot and Wet Season)
1. Bajra /Pearl millet (Pennisetum americanum/typhoides): Bajra, also known as pearl millet, ranks as the fourth most significant cereal crop, following rice, wheat and sorghum. This crop is primarily cultivated for both grain production and as fodder. It thrives predominantly in the arid and semi-arid regions of India, where it is typically grown as a rain-fed crop during the Kharif season, specifically in the months of June and July. Bajra is characterized by its rapid growth and resistance to diseases, making it an ideal fodder option; however, it is not well-suited for areas with high rainfall. Harvesting and yield: The average yield of green fodder from bajra is approximately 300-400 quintals per hectare. When harvested for grain, the kadbi production can reach 50-60 quintals per hectare. For optimal fodder production, harvesting should occur before the flowering stage or at the 50% flowering mark to ensure quality feed for livestock. Nutritive value: At the flowering stage, the CP content is around 4.50%. The initial cutting is recommended 50-80 days post-sowing, with subsequent cuts occurring every 35-40 days, maintaining a cutting height of 15 cm above ground to promote re-growth. A total of two cuts can be achieved for enhanced yield. Bajra serves as a non-maintenance type of fodder. It is typically harvested and provided to livestock as green fodder, with the potential for conversion into hay or silage. However, the straw produced from bajra is of inferior quality, containing only 4-5% CP and 1% DCP. Additionally, this fodder is high in oxalates, necessitating supplementation with calcium sources such as DCP or calcium-rich leguminous fodder. The composition of bajra includes 8.52% CP, 1.76% EE, 54.91% NFE, 25.01% CF, 9.80% TA,
0.55% Ca and 0.27% P on DMB. The DM content is 22%, with 13% TDN and 0.90% DCP on as-fed basis. When expressed on DMB, the DCP and TDN values are 3.04% and 48.47%, respectively.

Grass and Forage Crops
Grassland can be divided into natural grassland and cultivated grassland. Natural pastureland includes rough and hilly grazing land. Grasses, legumes and herbs are examples of natural grassland. Cultivated grassland can be divided into temporary grassland and permanent grassland.
Chemical composition of grassland
Dry matter: The composition of the dry matter is dependent on the relative proportions of cell walls and cell contents. In very young grasses its moisture content is 75-85% while in mature material its moisture is around 60%.
Crude protein: Proteins represent the nitrogenous substances found in herbage, with true protein constituting approximately 80 percent of the total nitrogen content. While the overall protein concentration diminishes as the plant matures, the relative distribution of amino acids remains relatively stable. Additionally, the amino acid profiles of proteins show minimal variation across different grass species. Approximately half of the cellular protein in grasses is comprised of a single enzyme, ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase, which is crucial for the photosynthetic process of carbon dioxide fixation. The average crude protein content ranges from about 3% in very mature herbage to as high as 30% in young, heavily fertilized grass. In mature herbage, a considerable portion of the protein may be indigestible due to its association with fiber, specifically in the form of acid detergent insoluble nitrogen (ADIN). Grass proteins are notably abundant in the amino acid arginine and also contain significant levels of glutamic acid and lysine. They exhibit a higher biological value for growth compared to seed proteins. Methionine is identified as the first limiting amino acid, followed by isoleucine, which is not utilized by ruminants. The rumen displays a rumen degradable protein (RDP) level of 80-90%. The primary constituents of non-protein nitrogen (NPN) include amino acids, amides, and nitrates. In the rumen, excessive nitrates (-NO3)
are converted into nitrites (-NO2), which subsequently lead to the conversion of ferrous ions to ferric ions (methaemoglobin), rendering them incapable of transporting oxygen.

Groundnut

Groundnut roundnut is believed to have originated in Brazil and later spread to many countries all over the world. It is known to humanity since 950BC. Groundnut crop and its products have multiple uses. Being a leguminous crop it enriches the soil with nitrogen through symbiotic biological fixation by rizhobium. The economic product, groundnut in shell, contains the seeds, which are edible. The shell as well as the haulms serve as fuel and fodder. The seed oil serves as a good cooking oil while the cakes are good sources of protein for animals and even humans. Groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L,) belongs to leguminosae family and papilionacea sub family. It consists of two sub species each with two varieties. The first one hypogaea has the variety hypogaea (virginia group) and variety hirsuta kohla while the second one fastigiata has the variety fastigiata (valencia group ) and the variety vulgaris (spanish group). Hypogaea varieties are spreading types with branching and lack infloresence on the main stem. They are of longer duration and have fresh seed dormancy . Varieties of the fastigiata are of erect type with branching and flowering on the main stem also. The crop is of shorter duration than hypogaea types, but with little fresh seed dermancy.

The major groundnut producing countries of the world are China, India, Nigeria, U.S.A. Indonesia, Argentina, Sudan, Senegal and Myanmar. The cultivation is spread in tropical and sub-ropical regions. Groundnut is a self- pollinated crop and pollination takes place in the morning. After fertilization an elongated stalk namely peg develops which enters the soil, bends horizontally and swells to become a pod. Within the pod, two, three or four kernels are formed. The crop can be grown under rainfall conditions ranging from 50-125cm, with good distribution during flowering and pegging stages. Sandy loams, loamy soils, and black soils with good drainage are suitable for growing the crop.

As articulated by Young (1959), social values encapsulate abstract and subconscious beliefs regarding notions of righteousness and importance within a communal framework.

Applied agroclimatology integrates climatology with agronomy to understand and manage interactions between weather, climate, crops, soils and agricultural resources. It converts climatic observations and forecasts into practical information for sowing, irrigation, fertilizer application, pest management and harvesting. This chapter introduces agro-meteorological processes, crop-environment relationships, resource management and climate-smart decision-making. 1. Introduction

Medicinal plants play an important role in human life to combat various diseases. The rural folks and tribals in India even now depend largely on the surrounding plants/forests for their day-to-day needs. Majority of the medicinal and aromatic plants are still collected from wild for preparation of herbal drugs and perfumes/cosmetics. Rapid population growth and rising popularity of herbal drugs and natural essential oils have brought into focus the acute scarcity in availability of some of the plants due to indiscriminate and unregulated collection, habitat destruction through expanding agricultural lands, deforestation and urbanization. Fall in the supply of good quality, genuine raw material has resulted in price rise and deterioration in the quality of formulations. With growing demand and use of medicinal and aromatic plants, the important species have to be introduced into commercial agriculture.

The Indian annual turnover of herbal material has crossed Rs. 4000 crores mark, of which Rs. 300 to 400 crores worth is being the export market. The share of Indian trade in medicinal and aromatic plants is only 1.5 percent of the world market. India is one of the major exporters of crude drugs mainly to the developed countries like the USA, the UK, Germany, Japan, France, Switzerland, etc. The main crude drugs having good export opportunities are Aconite, Aloe, Dioscorea, Ephedra, Digitalis, Bach, Belladona, Cincona, Ergot, Isabgol, Opium, Vinca, Senna, Sarpagandha, etc. Of these senna leaves, isabgol husk/seed, and Cassia tora seeds are in maximum demand. China is the major producer of herbal plant material in the world. China earns US$ 5 billion per year from herbal trade besides meeting its domestic requirements. Though India has more potential of production of number of medicinal and aromatic plants than China, the contribution of India in the world market is very low because of the production of poor quality produce (Chadha and Gupta 2005).

Annual flowers are a group of herbaceous plants which grow from seeds, produce flowers, set seeds and complete their life-cycle within one year or one season. They provide a beautiful display of colours in the garden. Whether it is a small home garden or a big public garden, it is incomplete without beds of annual flowers. They enhance the decorative value of a garden within a short span of time. At their blooming time, one feels elated when a rain of beauty drizzles in the garden.

Classification of Annuals

Based on season, the annual flowers are divided into 3 groups—winter season, summer season and rainy season.

Winter season annuals

This group includes a large number of seasonal flowers. The important ones are acroclinium, agrostemma, amaranthus, anchusa, annual carnation, annual chrysanthemum, antirrhinum, arctotis, bells-of-Ireland, brachycome, calceolaria, calendula, campanula, candytuft, celosia, China aster, cineraria, clarkia, cornflower, daisy, delphinium, dianthus, dimorphotheca, echium, eschscholzia, gazania, godetia, helichrysum, helipterum, hollyhock, gypsophila, limonium, linaria, linum, lupin, marigold, matricaria, mesembryanthemum, mignonette, mimulus, myosotis, nasturtium, nemesia, nicotiana, nemophila, nigella, pansy, petunia, phlox, pimpinella, poppy, rudbeckia, salvia, saponaria, scabiosa, schizanthus, senecio, stock, sweet alyssum, sweet pea, sweet sultan, sweet william, venidium, verbena, viola and wall flower.

They are developed in hanging baskets, window boxes or rock gardens, for training on walls and trellises and for planting in the form of edges, borders or ground covers. Dried flowers of some annuals are similarly used for interior decoration. Some annuals provide sweet fragrance.

Bulbs

Floriculturists use the term “bulbous” to include a wide array of perennial plants that grow from underground organs, including bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes. Any plant described as bulbous will normally have a swollen root or stem or even leaves underground (Some orchids and other plants have swollen stems – above ground). Bulbs, corms, tubers and rhizomes are perennial plants organ that are part of a plant type called bulbous plants in which part of the plant has evolved into a below-ground storage unit where food created one year is used to nourish the plant in the next. They are valuable in the garden for many reasons. Spring bulbs appear early, before most perennials have started to grow again after the winter. They can also add color to containers when other plants are not ready to face the danger of frost. In summer, bulbous plants such as Alliums and lilies can provide stately interest, while autumn crocuses and tiny hardy cyclamen can cheer up the garden toward the end of the season. The purpose of the bulbous part of the plant is to store food for the plant parts that live above ground to enable the plant to survive adverse conditions. The leaf bases may resemble scales, or they may overlap and surround the centre of the bulb. A modified stem forms the base of the bulb and plant growth occurs from this basal plate. Roots emerge from the underside of the base, new stems and leaves from the upper side. Most true bulbs have their scales closely packed together such as Hyacinthus but some types, such as the Lily (Lilium), they are loose and swollen. Most popular bulbs have a papery skin, the tunic, whose function is to protect the tissues within. Some true bulbs such as the Lily do not have a tunic and are therefore, easily damaged by rough handling. Cardio crinums dies after flowering but other bulbs are perennial. Vegetative reproduction in true bulbs is by means of offsets called bulblets.

Climbers can be used to break the bareness of long walls, soften posts, frame doors and windows and beautify window boxes. With a fence or trellis, they can be used for screens, making a background for flower garden or quickly turning an ordinary porch or patio into a private, shady living centre. Some slower growing climbers are useful as container plants for patios. On the down side, most vine species have the potential to become invasive, spreading to areas where they may not be desirable or becoming too large for the intended area.

Types

Climbers are characterized as three types based on how they cling to a support. The kind of support needed depends on whether the Climbers cling by twining stems, orby specialized structures such as tendrils, adhesive disks and aerial roots. Climbers with twining stems wind around a support as they grow (Fig. 5.2). Examples of plant with twining stem sinclude bitter sweet, wisteria and trumpet creeper.Tendrils resemble thread like stems that wrap around any structure they contact (Fig. 5.1). Examples of plants with tendrils include grape, pea, and cucumbers. Some Climbers have specialized structures for clinging to a support with a disk-like suction cup (Fig. 5.3). Examples include Boston ivy and Virginia creeper. Other Climbers cling by means of small, aerial roots that attach to rough surfaces such as mortar, wood, and tree trunks (Fig. 5.4). Examples include English ivy, trumpet creeper and winter creeper euonymus.

Shrubs are usually woody or semi-woody perennial plants; their branches arise from the base of the plants and grow up to the height of 3 to 4 meter. Many shrubs, which are more or less prostrate, make excellence ground flower. Availability of a large number of species & cultivars, a wide range of variation in shape & size of the plants, diversified types of leaves, growth habit, remarkable ranges of size, shape, colour of flowers & the variety of fragrance have made the shrubs as important garden plants. Several species of shrubs have unusually attractive colours.

Most of the shrubs are hardy & grow in all types of soil with little attention. Although some plants flower almost throughout the year, in most cases they are seasonal. A selection can be made in such a way that some plants in the shrubbery will be in bloom in any season of the year. Most of these plants are fairly quick growing and when vegetatively propagated, start flowering in the first year. Plants like Bauhinia acuminata (Kanchnar), Cassia alata (Candle Bush), Vinca rosea,which are usually grown from seeds also produced flowers in the first year.Shrubs can be classified into three groups according to the requirement of the sunlight for growth & flowering:

17.1 INTRODUCTION

Flower consumption is growing at an alarming rate of 20 per cent per annum at global level and India is, today, one of the world’s largest consumer base and fastest growing retail destinations. Commercial floriculture is today a potential money-spinner and an economically viable agri-business.

Cut flower trade in terms of export oriented units dealing with rose and gerbera is flourishing. Other cut flowers like gladiolus, tuberose, lilum, chrysanthemum, etc. are also being cultivated along with traditional loose flowers like jasmine, rose, crossendra, marigold on a higher scale. However, growing awareness of Indian consumers and popularity for cut flowers is creating demand for diversified flower crops. Further, trade of some flowers in the market is responsible for gluts. Thus, there is an urgent need to diversify the floriculture industry by introducing and adoption of anthurium as a cut flower with unique shape and high longevity.

Precision farming is an advanced approach for the flower growers to enhance their income. It mainly includes information and technology of farm management system to identify, analyze and manage variability within fields for optimum profitability, sustainability and protection of the land resource. Precision farming is applied for increasing efficiencies that can be realized by understanding and dealing with the natural variability found within a field.

Anthurium is taking a good place in market with high value. Farmers are undertaking anthurium cultivation and in this direction, precise farming technology will help the farmers to grow the crop with good quality and higher production per unit area.

Introduction

Climate change has become one of the biggest challenges for the sustainable crop production. Prolonged droughts and desertification are among the issues faced by Indian hot arid zone where the rural poor and smallholders are most heavily affected. If people are to survive in these ever harsher conditions, their crops need to withstand drought, high temperatures and poor soils. Cactus crops are gaining increasing interest across the globe, in particular cactus pear or prickly pear {Opuntia ficus indica (L) Mill.} because of its unique characteristics which provide resilience to the harsh ecological conditions. Cactus pear is able to grow on land where no other crops are able to grow; it can be used to restore degraded land. It is the only crop that can be relied on when everything else fails. Cactus pear is grouped as CAM plant (Crassulacean Acid Metabolism), a photosynthesis mechanism evolved in some plants as an adaptation to arid conditions. In a plant using full CAM, the stomata in the leaves remain shut during the day to reduce evapotranspiration, but open at night to collect carbon dioxide (CO₂).

1. Introduction

Cumin (Cuminum cyminum L.) crop belongs to the family Apiaceae and having diploid chromosome number 2n =14. It is also known as Jeera in Hindi. This crop is originated from Mediterranean region. It is an erect or sub erect, glabrous annual herb which grows to a height of 30-50cm. The leaves are alternate, compound and green, the blade consists of three slender filiform leaflets. The inflorescence is a compound umbel with white or pinkish flowers (Verma et al., 2018a). The typical pleasant aroma of the seeds is due to their essential oil and the main constituent in essential oil is cuminaldehyde. It is mainly cultivated in arid and semi arid parts of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The total area is about 12 lakh hectare with the production of about 8.5 lakh tons and total export of cumin is worth of more than Rs. 4200 crore during 2020-21 (Fig. 1 & 2). 

Gerbera (Gerbera jamesonii Bolus), commonly known as Transvaal Daisy, Barberton Daisy or African Daisy, belongs to the family Asteraceae is one of the most important cut flowers in domestic as well as global market. It ranks sixth among the top ten cut flowers. Gerbera can successfully be grown in the plains as well as in the hills. In India, its cultivation is confined mostly to Kalimpong, Bangalore and Pune. The flowers are known for long vase life (Chauhan, 2005) and good rehydration capacity suitable for long distant transportation. It is a diploid species with somatic chromosome number 50 (n=25).

Importance and Uses

Gerbera is very fashionable and widely used as a decorative garden flower and cut flower (Kanwar and Kumar, 2008). It is ideal for garden decoration as a bedding plant, pot plant and suitable for growing in rock gardens. It is also used in interior decoration in vases, flower arrangements and in bouquets.

Gerbera viridifolia is referred as ‘the herb of milk’ in the eastern Cape and is probably used to stimulate milk production in cattle (Dold and Cocks, 2002).

Minor fruit crops are considered important for their food, fibre, fodder, oil or medicinal properties, but have been reduced in value over time owing to particular supply and use constraints. These can include poor shelf life, unrecognized nutritional value, poor consumer awareness and reputational problems food or “poor people’s food”. The main products consumed by people are fruit cordial, jam, fruit drinks, chutney, candy, pickle and squash concentrate crop species. The entire country is mainly depend on handful of crop species neglecting large number of vegetables, fruits and other crop species with high nutritional and medicinal values which were grown traditionally in the past, resulting these valuable crop species are critically facing the state of speedy disappearing.

1. Introduction

There are around six hundred major and minor crop species but only two percent are cultivated commercially meeting the food (calorie) requirements. The most commonly cultivated food plants are even smaller counting to merely 20 crops (Wilkes, 1984). The huge number of underutilized crops may serve as potential fruit crops to meet the nutritional requirements of poor farming households in lesser common farming and subsistence agriculture. The adoption of underutilized crops on a commercial scale may not be possible without crop improvement, standardized agronomic and fertilizer management technologies, pre- and post-harvesting techniques and marketing (Bag Mal et al., 1997).

Multipurpose trees and shrubs are defined as all woody perennials that are purposefully grown to provide more than one significant contribution to the production and/or service functions of a land-use system that they occupy. In agroforestry systems, different species of trees and shrubs can be planted with many types of crops in a variety of patterns. Thus, it is required to know about the methods of propagation and nursery raising, planting and other silvicultural management practices along with the diverse uses of multipurpose trees and shrubs of tropical and subtropical areas before their selection for forestry and agroforestry activities. It is important to select the most suitable tree species since it is not easy to replace them once they have been planted.

MANGIUM (Acacia mangium)

Acacia mangium is a single-stemmed evergreen tree that grows to 25-35 m in height and up to 60 cm in diameter. The bole is usually straight, often fluted near the base, free of branches for up to half its height. Mangium is native to Australia, Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. However, it tolerates varied site conditions and has adaptability to different planting objectives. Mangium shows most vigorous growth on well-drained, fertile soils in high rainfall areas in the humid tropics. It is valued for its rapid growth and has been planted throughout the humid tropics and is a major plantation species in the Asia-Pacific. Provenances from Papua New Guinea consistently show better growth in height and diameter.
