Operation Flood and dairy cooperatives became India’s greatest rural employment programme, enabling the modernization of the dairy industry to a point from where it may take off to fulfill the need for milk and milk products within the nation as well as chances on the international market. An unorganized sector handles 80% of the milk a rural producer produces, and an organized sector handles the remaining 20%. It has been discovered that dairy cooperatives significantly contribute to reducing rural poverty by increasing rural milk production and marketing.

Livestock Population and it’s Economic Contribution

According to 18th Livestock census of India (2007), India has about 199.1 million cattle, which constitute 44.29 per cent of Asian and 12.7 per cent of the world cattle population. The current buffalo population is 105.34 million which accounts 57 per cent of Asian and 55 per cent of the world buffalos. The major output of the entire livestock sector is from the milk, which is the second most agricultural commodities next to paddy. According to the annual report of the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperation, during 2006-07, the contribution of milk alone (Rs.1,44,386 crore) was higher than paddy (Rs.85,032 crore), wheat (Rs.66,791 crore) and sugarcane (Rs.28,488 crore). The value of output from meat group animals as per estimates of Central Statistical Organization (CSO) at current prices was Rs. 34, 310 crore during 2006-07. Total export earnings from livestock, poultry and related products were Rs.5,213.80 crore during 2006-07. Eighty percent rural households keep livestock for their subsidiary income, important for employment, livelihood, nutrition, constant flow of quick and fast income, reduces the vulnerability of agricultural production. Trends indicate that animal protein consumption would rise proportionately with increase in income. The 18th Livestock Census (2007) has placed the total livestock population at 529.698 million and total of poultry birds at 648.830 million.

30.1 Introduction
Every food processing facility, especially those that produce several products, generates trash in various forms. The food products are rich in carbs, proteins, lipids, and mineral salts. During the process of flushing and washing various equipment, nutrients are released into the drainage, promoting the growth of both anaerobic and aerobic bacteria. Consequently, the water that is flushed might have a highly unpleasant smell and could become a challenge for disposal in the municipal sewer system.

30.2 Definition of Waste Management
Waste management encompasses the collection, transportation, processing, recycling or disposal, and oversight of waste materials.

30.3 Types of Wastes in a Food Processing Plants
Waste produced in food processing plants can be categorized based on their form and origin, whether they are avoidable or unavoidable, their value, or their potential for reuse.

30.3.1 Based on the forms: Wastes based on forms can be classified as
1. Solid wastes,
2. Liquid wastes,
3. Oily wastes,
4. Gaseous wastes/water vapors.

Milk processing plants involve processing of raw milk into products like market milk, cheese, butter, ice cream, condensed milk, dried milks and traditional dairy products. The by-products processing includes buttermilk, whey and its derivatives. Dairy effluents contain dissolved sugar, protein, fat and minerals. Spills and leaks of products or by-products, residual milk or milk products in piping and equipment before cleaning, wash solutions from equipment and floors, condensate from evaporation processes and cheese trimmings are some of the sources of dairy effluents in a dairy plant. The key parameters are the biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids, total dissolved solids etc. Common dairy waste techniques include grease traps, oil water separators for separation of floatable solids, equalization tanks. Biological treatment consists of aerobic and anaerobic process.

The North-East Hilly Region (NER) has a good dairy and animal husbandry infrastructure and climatic condition conducive for raring high yielding dairy animals. Other than acting as a supplementary source of family nutrition, dairying is more as a source of livelihood as 90 per cent of the milk is sold out. The various dairy development programme and schemes launched in the region provide the necessary backward and forward linkages to the dairy farmers in term of feed and veterinary aids and collection, processing and marketing of milk. Considering the changing trends of competitiveness in the dairy market and dairy enterprise as such there is a need for a scientific and technological intervention to transform the traditional dairy farming system into a modern and profitable enterprise. The farmers need to be trained and exposed to modern dairy farming system in order to survive in the long run. The outlook for milk production has changed a lot and people are more concerned on the quality of milk and so necessary emphasis has to be made on clean milk production. To order to use the resources effectively and in order to sustain dairying there is a need to upgrade or replace the low yielding animals by high yielding breed/ variety. The SWOT analysis gives a strong signal for opportunities and avenues for further development of dairying in the region. To harness the opportunities of dairying a strong dairy supply chain need to be developed in an organized manner starting from milk producer to ultimate consumer.

Introduction
Demand of dairy products is on the rise in India. India‘s demand forecast for milk and milk products is more than the current supply of these products. To meet this demand entrepreneurship initiatives are need of the hour. Further, younger generations of India are more interested in commercial dairy farming rather than subsistence based farming. Therefore, scientific as well as commercial dairy entrepreneurial training to farmers about advanced technology used in breeding, feeding, housing and healthcare is essential.

a. Barriers for Entrepreneurship in dairy

An average dairy entrepreneur faces several barriers to start a new enterprise. Some of them are as under

    1.    Lack of financial support: A major stumbling block for many dairy farmers to expand production or diversify into new high value enterprises is lack of access to finance. Farmers who are starting new enterprises often face difficulty raising investment capital.

India has the highest livestock population in the world with 50% of the buffaloes and 20% of the world’s cattle population, most of which are milch cows and milch buffaloes. The dairy industry in our country is considered as one of the most successful development programmes in the post-Independence period. In the year 2006-07the total milk production in the country was over 94.6 million tonnes with a per capita availability of 229 gm. per day. The industry had been recording an annual growth of 4% during the period 1993-2005, which is almost 3 times the average growth rate of the dairy industry in the world. Milk processing in India is around 35%, of which the organized dairy industry account for 13% of the milk produced, while the rest of the milk is either consumed at farm level, or sold as fresh, non-pasteurized milk through unorganized channels. Dairy Cooperatives account for the major share of processed liquid milk marketed in the India. Milk is processed and marketed by 170 Milk Producers’ Cooperative Unions, which federate into 15 State Cooperative Milk Marketing Federations. Over the years, several brands have been created by cooperatives like Amul (GCMMF), Vijaya (AP), Verka (Punjab), Saras (Rajasthan). Nandini (Karnataka), Milma (Kerala) and Gokul (Kolhapur). Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are the milk surplus states in India.

Amongst agricultural commodities milk is the single largest contributor to gross value of output followed by paddy, wheat, oilseeds, pulse and sugar. It is not only that, milk is also least contributor to inflation.Thus it can be said that milk is the lifeline of Indian economy. Unlike developed countries, unique feature of Indian milk production system is that about 70% of it is produced in about 70 million household dairy units in rural areas.Dairy farming has always been a subsystem of agriculture in such household units which entirely depends on the recyclable crop residues. Moreover the milk production system has been mainly confined to landless labourers, small and marginal farmers.Their poor socioeconomic condition, religious sentiments for cattle and utilitarian attitude towards dairy farming coupled with poor milk production potential of dairy animals has remained a major impediment in the overall development of the system. Livestock is an important source of supplementary income. Mixed farming has been serving as an insurance against natural calamities, while supporting food security and nutrient recycling. India has over 500 million livestock, which include cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats. Among them, cattle and buffaloes are popular for milk production. As milk is an important part of the Indian diet and bullock power is essential as draft animal for farming and rural transportation.

India is emerging as a global economic power and the economy is growing at an average of 8 9 per cent for last couple of years.The Dairy sector is contributing significantly to the national economy and with 112 Million Metric Tonns (MMT) milk productions during 200910; it ranks first in the World. It provides gainful employment and supplementary income to large number of people. Dairy sector contribute significantly on poverty reduction in rural areas as income from milk in the total income of underprivileged family is as high as 75 to 80% during drought and the employment generated is relatively high. Dairying has become an important secondary source of income for millions of rural families and has assumed an important role in providing employment and income generating opportunities.

Abstract

Over the years, India has emerged as one of the world’s biggest producers of milk, with the total milk production rising from 122 Million Metric Tons in 2010 to 171 Million Metric Tons in 2017 with dairy market in India touching a value of INR 7,916 Billion. An average livestock contributes about 12 % of farmer’s income and the same for small and marginal farmers and landless laborers’ is 36 %. While farmer’s income in agriculture is growing at 3.5 % annually, income from livestock is growing at about 14.5 %. Despite this, the majority of the dairy industry in India is still highly unorganized and dominated by small and marginal dairy farmers. Of all the major rural enterprises, dairy is an important profession of economic and social transformation to supplement the income and employment to the rural sector in general and rural women in particular. The process of dairy development would be incomplete and lop sided, unless farm women are fully involved in it. Indian dairy industry also offers good opportunities to both domestic and foreign investors for entry and expansion. Low yielding breeds, costly animal feeds, inadequate market linkage and predominance of handling dairy through indigenous technologies mar the Indian dairy industry. It is imperative to develop proper production, processing and marketing infrastructure if India has to emerge as an exporting country which is capable of meeting international quality requirements. It is anticipated that milk production in India will further grow at a CAGR of around 15% between 2018 and 2023. A comprehensive plan for producing quality and safe dairy products should be formulated with suitable legal backup. Dairy products’ consumption has been growing exponentially in the country owing to their rich nutritional qualities. Thus, it has enormous scope for women empowerment and socio-economic transformation of rural India and must rank top in our developmental agenda.

Abstract

Rural woman plays dominant role in dairy husbandry activities. Capacity building of rural women in this enterprise is the need of the hour to sustain 4% growth rate in dairy sector as the future demand for dairy products is bound to increase.  Specific objectives of the study are to understand the socio-economic and dairy husbandry scenario of households; knowledge level about different aspects of dairy husbandry; impact of training on knowledge and; policy implications for their capacity building for this enterprise in the state of Haryana. The data towards this end was collected from a survey conducted on 180 women trainees where pre and post models were used. The background socio-economic variables of women trainees were: 26-45 years age group, literacy of 76.12% and the main occupation was agriculture and household management. Milch buffalo (84.45%) was the main dairy animal. Milk production of more than 5 litres was found in 55.54 percent households and selling of milk more than this quantity was seen in 14.14 percent households. About 60 percent of woman trainees themselves looked after the animals. Pre-training knowledge reveals that majority of women knew the right milking method (70.6%) and breed of buffalo (62.2%).

Dairy Industry in India
Milk holds a deeply symbolic place in Indian culture, far beyond its role as a mere food item. It is intricately woven into the cultural and historical identity of the nation, with the dairy industry serving as a cornerstone of India’s economy. The sector is a driving force behind rural development providing a crucial pathway to prosperity for millions of small-scale farmers. It plays a significant role in alleviating poverty and generating employment opportunities. The dairy sector by empowering farmers, developing modern infrastructure embracing technological advancements, and promoting sustainable practices, fostering widespread socio-economic progress in rural India. In the 1920s, modern milk processing and marketing technologies were introduced in India. The National Dairy Development Board (NDDB; founded in 1965), implemented Operation Flood (1970-96) to modernize the dairy sector through cooperatives. This led to the rise of dairy cooperatives countering the exploitation by private milk plants. The cooperatives followed the Anand model, a three-tier structure comprising village-level societies (producers), district-level unions (milk collection and processing), and state-level federations (marketing). Originating in Anand, Gujarat in 1946, the model was later adopted nationwide. The progress termed as White Revolution transformed India from a nation struggling with milk shortages into the world’s largest producer and consumer of milk. By 1997, India became the global leader in milk production with a volume of 70.9 million tons, surpassing the United States (FAO data rearranged by Our World in Data). Further in the year 2014, for the first time, it beat the entire European Union. Since 1950, India’s milk production has seen tremendous growth, rising from 17 million tonnes in 1950-51 to 230.58 million tonnes in 2022-23. The per capita availability of milk increased from 124 g/day in 1950-51 (PIB 2022) to 459 g/day in India during.

Introduction
 
Dairy ingredients are of significant importance in the formulation of many food products. Additionally, the incorporation of dairy ingredients, comprehensively recognized by the consumer as “natural” intensifies the odds of success of packaged foods and adds functional properties of the dairy ingredients in the targeted product. Dairy ingredients can be extracted from fluid milk in the form of cream, butter, condensed milk, dry milk, cheese, and whey products [1]. They provide beneficial functionality to foods, such as delivery of key nutrients, water management, fat-holding capacity, emulsification capability, viscosity creation, gel formation, and foam generation apart from providing desirable attributes of texture and flavour. Various ingredients and claims associated with dairy foods are shown in Table 3.1.

Milk is nutritious and essential food for human beings and also serve as good medium for microbial growth and contamination. Milk is a single, most nearly complete, natural food. Primarily it is meant for nourishing the newborns but man has exploited it for human consumption since long. Today milk has become indispensable integral component of our diet. About half the milk produced is consumed as fresh milk, the rest going into a variety of products including evaporated and condensed milk, dried milk powder, butter, cheese, malted milk, ice cream, yoghurt, lactose and casein. Milk is very important from a nutritional standpoint since it contained all the essential food constituents (carbohydrate-lactose, protein-casein, fat-butter, minerals- calcium, potassium and vitamins- A, B, C, D, E, and K) required in human diet in about the proper proportions. India is the second largest producer of milk in the world. India has exhibited unprecedented rate of growth in dairy development in last 30 years mainly due to sustained efforts of dairy technologists in Operation flood Programme introduced by the National Dairy Development Board. Dairy microbiology deals with aspects like shelf life and spoilage microbes, public health significance and food borne pathogens, and production of fermented dairy products.

DAIRY BUSINESS

Most ambitious young men at some time or another are likely to develop an interest in going into business for themselves. This is prompted not only by the thought that a person owning his own business is more independent but also by the hope of increasing personal income. However, when these same young men look about them and see the general existence of “big business” in practically all lines of endeavour, they often lose courage and decide to remain as workers with some company where they can enjoy a certain degree of security. 
The general condition is an important factor in determining the success of new business enterprises. Similarly, innovations like the creation of new products or the development of new methods of merchandising often gives rise to opportunities for a new business enterprise. The introduction of “Softy” ice cream and other soft-served frozen products made it possible for several hundred small businesses to get established in our country. The advent of single- service paper container was the spark that started several milk-plant operations which later grew into companies of considerable size. Ironically, the paper milk container also spelled the doom for many older independent plants that could not or did not adjust soon enough to this new way of packaging. The chocolate-coated ice-cream bar idea started a number of new enterprises which grew from small companies going to concerns of considerable size. Vending machines made it possible for many small companies to get started selling milk, ice cream, candy and lassi etc. 

Introduction

The dairy industry is a cornerstone of worldwide agricultural economies, underpinning nutrition, employment, and rural development. India stands out among nations with thriving dairy sectors, accounting for approximately 23% of global milk production (Prasad et al., 2023). With advent of Operation Flood in the late 1970s, India’s dairy industry has undergone transformative changes. This movement revolutionised milk production, rural income, and the organisation of cooperatives. The Indian dairy sector is still unorganized and only 18-20 per cent of the total milk produced is handled by organized sector (Gowda, 2023). There is rising trend of value addition along with rising demand of processed dairy products in India. These changes underscore the importance of effective dairy plant management systems, where strategic oversight of milk procurement, processing, and product manufacturing ensures quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

Introduction

In India, the Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) sector plays a pivotal role in the overall industrial economy of the country. It is estimated that in terms of value, the sector accounts for about 39 per cent of the manufacturing output and around 33 per cent of the total export of the country. Further, in recent years the MSE sector has consistently registered higher growth rate compared to the overall industrial sector. The major advantage of the sector is its employment potential at low capital cost. As per available statistics, this sector employs an estimated 31 million persons spread over 12.8 million enterprises and the labour intensity in the MSE sector is estimated to be almost 4 times higher than the large enterprises.

Definition for SMEs is often considered to be an obstacle for business studies and market research. Definitions in use today define thresholds in terms of employment, turnover and assets. They also incorporate a reasonable amount of flexibility around year-to-year changes in these measures so that a business qualifying as an SME in one year can have a reasonable expectation of remaining an SME in the next.

The GOI is pushing to strengthen infrastructure for the production of quality milk, as well as for procurement, processing, and marketing of milk and milk products through the following Dairy Development Schemes:

6.1. Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS)

Dairy Entrepreneurship Development Scheme (DEDS) was started in September 2010. This scheme is being implemented through NABARD which provides financial assistance to commercially bankable projects with loans from Commercial, Cooperative, Urban and Rural banks.

Objective of the scheme

To generate self-employment and provide infrastructure for the dairy sector, to set up modern dairy farms and infrastructure for the production of clean milk, to encourage heifer calf rearing for conservation and development of good breeding stock, to bring structural changes in the unorganized sector so that initial processing of milk can be taken up at the village level, to upgrade traditional technology to handle milk on a commercial scale, to provide value addition to milk through processing and production of milk products.

1.1. Global Dairy Scenario

Global milk production is forecast at 852 million tonnes in 2019, an increase of 1.4 per cent from 2018 (DAHD, 2019) – a smaller rate of growth, reflecting downward revisions made for India and the European Union. Much of the anticipated output expansion will originate in India, Pakistan, China, the European Union, and Brazil, partially offset by declines in some countries including Australia, Colombia, and Argentina. In India and Pakistan, herd expansions drive output growth, while in China, farm efficiency improvements underpin higher growth. The output is increasing in the European Union, although slowly as dry weather limited the supply of milk during the summer, whilst rising dairy herds and stable milk prices are supporting higher production in Brazil. By contrast, the output may decline in Australia and Colombia due to dry weather, whereas in Argentina, rising feed costs and restrained consumer demand may dampen production. Elsewhere, in the United States, higher milk yields hold up the growth momentum, whereas, in New Zealand, favourable weather corroborates a positive production outlook (DAHD,19).

    1.    The heifer is bred (naturally or by insemination) before the age of two years.

    2.    The gestation period is nine months and one week.

    3.    After calving, the cow gives milk for 10 months.

    4.    1 – 2 months after calving the cow will again be bred.

    5.    The cow then continues to give milk for about 300 days. This period is known as lactation.

    6.    Milk should preferably be handled in a closed system, to minimise the risk of contamination. It must be cooled to 4 °C as soon as it is produced.

    7.    The content of protein, lactose and ash is somewhat higher in buffalo milk than in cow milk. Buffalo milk contains vitamin A, but lacks b-carotene, which is present in cow’s milk.

Introduction

NITI Policy Paper No.1/20017 reveals details of the concept and time frame as how to double the income of the farmers. The policy paper emphasizes in increase in agriculture productivity, improvement in total factor productivity, diversification towards high value crop, and increase in crop intensity, increasing terms of trade for farmers and shifting cultivators to non-farm and subsidiary activities. The well thought and planned program for doubling the income of the farmers reflecting dream or reality. We have farmers of different types like, small. Marginal and large farmers, resource rich and resource poor farmers, farmers of irrigated and non-irrigated zones, tribal and non-tribal farmers , trained and untrained farmers and progressive and non-progressive farmers. The farmers and their economic structure are quite different from place to place even within district. NSSO data on consumption expenditure survey (2011-12) reveal that more than one-fifth of households with self employment in agriculture and their principal occupation were having income less the poverty line.

Milk Production Scenario

Milk is primary source of protein and lactoseDairy farming is considered to be a whole environment of reciprocal relations and dependency reproduction and protection of social values. In worldwise dairy cows count up to 264 millions producing 600 million tones of milk every year. The global average for milk production is approximately 2200 litters/cow. Cattle population of world is 1009.69 millions heads (FAO, 2019) and highest milk producing countries are India, USA, China, Pakistan and Brazil. In case of consumption of milk India tops in the world followed by EU, USA and China. The per capita consumption of milk is highest in the country of Belarus followed by Ukraine and New Zealand. India is ranked 7th in the world in this respect. In India total cattle population is 306.70 millions. The state of Odisha constitutes 1.19% of the total cattle population of India. The level of milk production of India is reported to be 198.2 metric million tones. The per capita availability of milk in India is 427 gms/day (2021) and highest being in Punjab followed by Rajasthan. In case of Odisha the per capita milk availability is 143 gms and in milk production the district Cuttack top the list followed by Ganjam and Jagatsinghpur.

Abstract

A large tsunami triggered due to a massive earthquake of 9.3M in the offshore of Sumatra on 26^th December 2004 created havoc in several countries of the Indian Ocean. The deadly tsunami waves lashed the towns adjoining the coastline of several countries including Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, India and Sri Lanka causing more than 1,50,000 deaths. The earthquake occurred along the plate boundary is marked by a subduction zone between the Indian plate and the Burmese micro plate. In Andhra Pradesh, six coastal Districts were affected and amongst them four south coastal districts experienced maximum damage. In the present study, Tuppalapalem (vagarru revenue village) of Vakadu mandal, Nellore District was selected as a case study for discussion in the article. The objective of the study was to make an inventory of the damages to the natural and physical resources, by preparing pre and post-tsunami maps on geomorphology, land use / land cover, tsunami inundation and finally the tsunami risk zonation map on 1:8,000 scale. In this process, water and soil samples of the affected regions were also collected and chemical analysis was carried out. The data on damages were collected using a specially formulated data sheet. High resolution IKONOS data of January 2000 and IRS data of January 2005 were used for the generation of respectively the pre and post-tsunami geomorphology and land use / land cover maps. Ground truth data were also incorporated in these thematic maps.

The study has revealed that the water in all the bore wells became brackish after tsunami. About 80 country boats, 40 fibre boats and nets were lost with an estimated loss of about one crore. The tidal waters damaged the bunds of the aqua-farms and deposited the transported sediments in them. The extensive casuarina plantations, were reduced by the onslaught of tsunami and the casuarina trees became brown due to their contact with tidal waters. From amongst the various geomorphic units mapped in the study area, the beach, spits, shoals, creeks, swales, palaeo creeks were inundated by tsunami where as beach ridges, dune complexes and stabilized sand dunes were not affected and hence inferred as barriers. Geomorphology, land use / land cover and the tsunami inundation maps, tsunami risk zonation map were prepared showing very high, high and moderate zones of tsunami risks. It is recommended to take up casuarina plantations extensively along the coast as a biowall, which will also provide employment to the local people. The shallow aquifers of the coastal environment were contaminated by the tidal waves. Hence, drinking water should be supplied through protected water supply schemes. As a part of the community development, proper awareness must be created through training and appraisal to the fisherman community to face such natural disasters. The coastal regulation zone act, which prohibits any construction activity within 500m of the high tide line, should be strictly enforced. Keeping in view of the experience, a holistic tsunami protection plan is needed to safe guard the Indian coasts.

Abstract

The tsunami has struck many coastal countries of South Asia on 26 December 2004 and caused greater devastation along Andaman - Nicobar and Indian coasts. In India, Tamil Nadu coast is worst affected in Kanyakumari, Nagapattinam and Cuddalore districts. Subsequently, damage assessment, in respect of natural and physical resources, was done using Remote Sensing and GIS in parts of Cuddalore and Pondicherry coasts. The structural damages were studied village wise and categorized as maximum, moderate and least affected areas. As far as the natural resources are concerned, the changes in geomorphology, land use/ land cover, soil and water have been studied. On the basis of the same, the risk maps were also generated in GIS environment.

Introduction

In agricultural and horticultural ecosystems greater extent of losses caused by pests includes insect-pests, plant diseases, and weeds and have directly affected the production. Out of these, a group of animals other than the insects also causes the considerable yield losses to agricultural and horticultural crops and commonly known as vertebrate pests such as birds, rodents and mammals. In recent times mammals such as blue bull (Nilgai), wild boars, rodents, porcupine and monkeys has gaining the status of pests and in certain cases a huge damage is being encountered (Rao, et al?, 2015). Among mammals, blue bull and wild boar both has become a serious problem in most of the Indian states for farmers in major agricultural and horticultural crops and resulting into immeasurable damage.

Introduction
Among flowers, the rose enjoys the greatest adorable position over the world. In real sense, rose almost hypnotised the man most by its colour and fragrance. Apart from its aesthetic value, the roses are of high economic benefits, and religious significant. Besides, it finds it place in art and culture from times immemorial. The rose thus merits pride of place as the ‘Queen of flowers’.
Origin
The damask rose is originated in ancient Persia (now Iran), and later on spreading over Europe and Northern Africa. Further, widespread farming of R. damascena for rose oil manufacturing began in Turkey and Bulgaria. Many countries of the world grow scented roses for extraction of the volatile essential oil. The genus Rosa grows wild in many parts of the temperate and sub-temperate regions. The major growing countries are Bulgaria, France, Italy, Turkey, Russia, China and India. Bulgaria is the principle European country for supply of rose oil to the world market. Among different species, Rosa centifolia Linn. is largely grown in France and Italy, whereas Rosa
damascena Mill. in Turkey, Bulgaria, Russia and Persia. Rosa damascena Mill. was first introduced successfully in middle east countries during 1680, resulting in the establishment of entire area as ‘Valley of flowers’. It belongs to family rosaceae.

Soil-borne plant pathogens cause significant losses in the nursery plantation of agricultural, horticultural and forestry plantation stands. These pathogens can survive in the soil for many years through their resistant structures. Besides, the diseases caused by them are difficult to predict. Soil factors like soil type, texture, pH, moisture, temperature, level of organic matter and nutrient content influence the activity of soil-borne pathogens and diseases. In order to survive successfully, these pathogens compete with others for nutrition, space and other requirements. Understanding the dynamics of these pathogens and other microbial populations in the soil in relation to environmental conditions is essential for the successful management of these diseases.

The term dandruff includes several different conditions of the scalp. There is scaling in which the entire scalp may be covered with loose dry scales. When the hair is combed or brushed, or when the scalp is scratched, these scales fall like snow on the shoulders. Often there is itching, as well, and the scalp may be red from scratching.

What is at first thought to be dandruff may later prove to be some other conditions, such as. seborrhoeic dermatitis, or worse still psoriasis and even neurodermatitis.

Neurodermatitis : It is a chronic type of itching and inflammation of the skin. The itching area may be in some localized spot or it may extend over large areas of the body. The condition may even develop in infants. It may disappear after the age of two and return in the early teens of later. The condition is more often seen in those who suffer from fever, hives and asthma. True cause is not known for most of the people are allergic to many things. Many of them are tense and restless and are troubled with a dry skin. They are hypersensitive and are often given to itching, especially in the bend of elbow or behind the knee. The constant scratching leaves deep scratch marks and causes thickening and furrowing of the skin.

Morphological characteristics

The plant is a monoecious undershrub that grows up to 3.5 metres tall and has serrated leaves and stiff branches that emerge from the root. Lower branches feature big, typically broad, elliptical, three- to five-lobed leaves with rounded bases, while above branches have small, lanceolate leaves. Petioles range in length from 5 to 15 cm.

Floral characteristics

The flowers are unisexual. The calyx of male flowers is globose, 2.5 mm long, four to five partite, glabrous or slightly pubescent, membranous, finely mottled with a disc of six glands, and glabrous or slightly pubescent. There are approximately 20 stamens in each flower. Sepals are ovate-lanceolate and glabrous, and the disc is roughly 2.5 mm in diameter in female flowers. Fruit is a three-lobed capsule that is around 8–13 mm long and hairy. Seeds contain an oily endosperm and are speckled and smooth. Flowers bloom in January–February, followed by fruit that mature a month later.

Distribution

The species grows in tropical and subtropical places with rainfall of around 1000 mm, such as the Himalayan foothills, Kashmir to the Khasi hills, and especially in the Vindhyas southward. In North and East Bengal, Chhota Nagpur, and peninsular India, it is fairly frequent.

In 2009, the world celebrated the 200th anniversary of the life and work of Charles Darwin, a transformational scientist who brought about a revolution in our understanding of evolution.  Evolution through natural selection among living organisms leading to the survival of the fittest was a concept which was alien to Christian thought in Darwin’s time, as faith was strong in the divine creation of the living forms of our planet.  Evolution of higher forms of life, including human beings, from fish and other forms of living organisms was an accepted view in ancient Indian thought, as exemplified by the ten forms of manifestation on earth of the Hindu god Vishnu.

“Variety is the spice of life” is a common saying.  Variation is a must for selection to occur.  Today, we are confronted with the prospect of human-induced changes in climate, leading to adverse variations in temperature, precipitation, flood and sea level.  We will have to be prepared for facing the consequences of drought, flood and coastal storms more frequently.

Agriculture has long been at the mercy of the weather, and in today’s datadriven world, harnessing meteorological information is more critical than ever. Weather intelligence—the process of collecting, analyzing, and disseminating weather data—supports decision-making in diverse fields such as aviation, transportation, emergency management, and especially agriculture (Fig 3.1). This chapter explores how advanced data acquisition methods and robust database management techniques underpin agricultural weather intelligence. It covers the variety of data sources available, details strategies for integrating and ensuring the quality of vast datasets, and examines the forecasting techniques that transform raw data into actionable insights for precision forecasting and decision making in food production. Introduction

The most significant part of the research report is analysis and data interpretation. This chapter presents the analysis of data gathered through the questionnaire designed for the study. The study's primary data was collected from 266 (two hundred and sixty-six) Library and Information Science (LIS) professionals working in the eight-state universities in Kerala. It includes a detailed analysis of major results and pertaining information for arriving at a valid conclusion. It helps to interpret the results of the study from the proper perspective. Based on the set forth objectives and hypotheses formulated, the data collected through questionnaires were tabulated, and statistical analyses have been done to formulate the result of the study.

This chapter presents the analysis and interpretation of data gathered through a structured questionnaire to conduct the current study. Data analysis and interpretation of data is the most significant part of the research report. It contains a detailed analysis of major results about the information for arriving at a valid conclusion. It helps to interpret the results of the study in a proper perspective. Based on the objectives and hypotheses formulated, the data was collected through a questionnaire. Likert’s scale was used to assess the opinions of the respondents.

Solution: The summary statistics of the data using MS – excel can be obtained / analyzed through following steps:

Step 1: Open Excel sheet and feed the data as given in Fig. 8.1.

Step 2: Go to data menu and select Data Analysis. Sometimes this menu is not available in the data, it can be added through add in → check in, analysis tool pack → go. It will appear as the way showing in Fig. 8.1.

5.1 Introduction

This chapter presents analysis of data collected through the questionnaire survey from agriculture libraries in Maharashtra (Constituent including University Libraries i.e. Government and Affiliated i.e. Private colleges). The purpose of the survey was to explore the status of CRS (Cyber Reference Service), various aspects pertaining to the CRS, and the ICT infrastructure used for the CRS in the agriculture universities and college libraries. Introduction

The term analytics and data analytics are used inter-changeably. When referring to analytics, it means “analysis of data” or “what can be learnt from an analysis of data”. In an industry like fishing industry, the researchers have been slow to adopt the tools used to portray accurate representations of data. For example, a dashboard with historical data from the past ten or fifteen years displayed on a digital map can enable the researchers to decide the places where fishing can be good. This map can help in locating the points fished during specific seasons. This will enable the researchers to filter the data on various parameters like area, year, season etc. or on any other specific parameter which can give valuable information. Similarly, this type of dashboard can affect the decision making process while fishing, like one can find the monetary value associated with each trip during a specific season or compare the values associated with two different trips to gauge the cost-benefits.

Data Analytics helps in taking most informed decisions in the fishing industry if one of the goals is to increase income while ensuring sustainability. It helps in deciding whether to reduce overhead costs or to increase expenditure to avoid overhead costs in future.

Fisheries sector undergoes continuous changes with introduction of newer technologies evolved through research and development institutions. Statistics per se deals with generation of data, data management, data analysis and information generation from data. There are varied disciplines of fisheries viz., Aquaculture, Fisheries Resource Management, Fish Genetics, Fish Biotechnology, Aquatic Health, Nutrition, Environment, Fish Physiology, and Post-harvest Technology, wherein research on practical aspects is undertaken which affect production and sustainability.

2.1. Open source satellite data

The satellite images have been invaluable information sources for Natural Resource Management. They provide synoptic view of the Earth periodically helping in inventory, surveying, and monitoring in agriculture, hydrology, geology, mineralogy, land cover, land use and environment. Free global satellite image data of spatial resolutions of 1m to 1 km and spectral resolution of single band to hyperspectral are available from an increasing number of sources (Table 2.1).

Inaccurate data can have an impact on results. Data quality problems can occur anywhere in information systems. A technique that helps to convert improper data into meaningful data. Machine Learning is datadriven. With the data cleaning techniques, your Machine Learning model will perform better. So, it is important to process data before use. Without quality data, it is unwise to expect a correct output. Data cleaning refers to identifying and correcting errors in the dataset that may negatively impact a predictive model. It is used to refer to all kinds of tasks and activities to detect and repair errors in the data. These problems can be solved by using various data cleaning techniques. Data refers to any collection of facts, observations, measurements, or values that are typically numerical, but can also be qualitative. It's raw material that can be processed and organized to provide context, relevance, and meaning. In its raw form, data may not carry any specific meaning and might appear as a series of numbers, text, symbols, or images.

Types of Data

• Quantitative Data: Numerical data that can be measured and expressed with numbers (e.g., height, weight, temperature).

Data Collection and Report Writing

Many a times you may be asked questions like what is the average milk production of deshi cows of your area? What is the average lactation period of CB cows of your area? or maybe what is the impact of AI programme in your area? etc., by your higher officers. How to answer all these questions? All these questions may be answered scientifically if you possess elementary knowledge on statistics. We have to frame a research design and to collect data to answer these questions.

What is Data ?

Data is a collection of facts, such as numbers, words, measurements, observations or even just descriptions of things. Example: 5, Ram, Kilogram, Good, Male, etc. Independently they do not produce any meaning.

These are special types of information, generally obtained through observation, surveys, enquiries or are generated as a result of human activities.

Once you have decided what to study and how to study, you are faced with the task of systematically collecting reliable and valid evidence upon which you can base your findings. Data (singular datum) are facts which are observed and measurable phenomena. The purpose of gathering and summarizing data is to transform them into information. The data collected in the research study may be quantitative or qualitative in nature. Quantitative data can be counted and can be computed. Such as age of a boy, marks scored by a student, distance, etc. Quantitative data are easier for analysis. We also collect qualitative data like sex of a person as Male or Female or Transgender. The qualitative characteristics can be counted, but as such cannot be computed. For example, we may get “Yes’ or “No” to a question to farmers about vaccination of his animals. For this “Yes” or “No” , we may assign 0 to “Yes” and 1 to “No” in an artificial or nominal way to categorise these qualitative data, and go for computation. So, quantitative data are expressed in the form of numerals and are amenable to statistical analysis readily. Whereas, qualitative data are descriptive in nature and can be statistically analysed only after processing and after having them classified into some appropriate categories. Data is required to make a decision in any business situation. The researcher is faced with one of the most difficult problems of obtaining suitable, accurate and adequate data. Utmost care must be exercised while collecting data because the quality of the research results depends upon the reliability of the data. There are basically two sources from which we obtain data for our research works. They are known as primary data and secondary data.

Reliable artificial intelligence depends on accurate, timely and multidimensional livestock data. This chapter examines the transition from manual record-keeping to sensor-based systems that capture physiological, behavioural, production and environmental information. Data sources include wearable devices, IoT monitoring networks, computer-vision systems and environmental sensors. Their applications include monitoring health, welfare, movement, feeding and productivity. The chapter also considers the integration of heterogeneous datasets and persistent challenges involving missing values, noise, interoperability, scalability and system reliability. By connecting data generation with intelligent analysis, it emphasizes that robust acquisition protocols and dependable infrastructure are essential for developing effective, evidence-based and responsive livestock-management systems.

Now we have to learn how to enter numbers and text, how to edit any erroneous entry and then how to do simple calculations. Open empty excel spread sheet by clicking on the start menu in the window tool bars, click on Programs and then click on the Excel menu item.

6.1 Entering Numbers

Numeric entries are constant, can be integers, decimal fractions, integer fractions and scientific nations which can be entered by typing the number in the active cell [cell which can be made active by clicking the mouse on the cell.

Our journey through remote sensing has, thus far, focused on the remarkable capabilities of various platforms and sensors to observe Earth’s atmosphere and surface. From the localized, high-resolution insights provided by groundbased instruments like Wind Profilers and SODARs, to the expansive, global coverage offered by an array of satellite-borne imagers, sounders, radars, and lidars, we’ve seen how a continuous stream of invaluable meteorological data is acquired.
However, the mere act of collecting this data, no matter how sophisticated the technology or comprehensive the observations, represents only the initial phase of its lifecycle. The true power and utility of remote sensing data are unlocked only when it can be efficiently organized, securely preserved, and readily available to the diverse community of meteorologists, climate scientists, researchers, and operational forecasters who rely on it daily. This necessitates a profound understanding of the principles and practices governing data formats, data storage, and data access.
The sheer volume, velocity, and variety of remote sensing data pose significant challenges. Petabytes of information are generated annually, requiring robust infrastructure and standardized methodologies to ensure its integrity, interoperability, and long-term usability. Without effective strategies for managing this deluge of information, the potential of remote sensing to enhance weather prediction, advance climate science, and inform critical decision-making would remain largely untapped. 

Introduction

The biological information that are being generated by research in modern biology worldwide is so huge that it is not possible to manage through conventional file keeping or simple computing. Secondly, analysis of these data certainly needs specific interfaces, software and management facilities. Therefore, such requirements to store, analyze and manage the biological information/data in an appropriate way has led to the origin of a new branch of science called “Bioinformatics”. Here, emphasis will be given on the disciplines of research mostly from which generation of data is made. Broadly, they can be classified as follows.

This chapter deals with data importing, exporting and data manipulations in R. R can import almost all kinds of data format. The basic data format of .txt and .csv and data from other softwares like MS office .xls and .xlsx, spss ……, stata ……., etc. however, we will discuss in this chapter to read and write the basic formats and the .xlsx data which we use the most. Further, we will also discuss the basic data manipulations. For a detailed reading on data manipulation, readers can refer to the first book of the series namely “Data Handling and Manipulation in R”.
2.1. Primary Spectral Data Processing
The original spectra consisting of relative reflectance values of 2151 points (at 1 nm interval) between 350 and 2500 nm were averaged at every tenth-nanometer wavelength interval from 360 to 2490 nm by integration technique. Thus, the new spectra contained reflectance values at 360, 370, 380, 2490 nm, are inclusive. For example, the new reflectance value for 360 nm represented an integrated value of the original reflectance values from 356 to 365 nm, inclusive. Similarly, the reflectance at 400 nm was an integrated reflectance values from 396 to 405 nm, while the reflectance at 2490 nm was an integrated value of reflectance from 2486 to 2495 nm. This was done to reduce the volume of data for analysis and to match it more closely to the spectral resolution of the instrument (3 to 10 nm). This procedure resulted in a new dataset, with reflectance values specified for 214 wavelengths for all samples, which were further processed for noise removal.
2.2. Importing Data in R
We can rerad many format of tabular data in R such as excel, text, csv, etc. In thid book we will be using the csv format. Before reading the data, arrange data in excel/CSV sheet so that spectral data in column is followed by chemical data/ lab data. This will ensure that if any soil property or properties added in next column there is no need to change code for selection of spectral data in R environment.

Abstract

Carrying out effective and sustainable agriculture has become an important issue in recent years. A key to this is the usage of modern technologies for precision agriculture. Recent technological developments allowed envisioning sensor devices with distributed ambient sensory network, which could be a potential technology for monitoring various natural phenomena (weather parameters, soil moisture, etc.) at micro level. As more and more agricultural data are virtually being harvested along with the crops and are being collected/ stored in databases, the same can be used in productive decision making if appropriate data mining techniques are developed/applied. As a case study for this, an experiment was conducted with four consecutive agricultural (Kharif and Rabi) seasons in a semi-arid region of India to understand the crop-weather-environment-pest/diseases relations using wireless sensory and field-level surveillance data on closely related and interdependent pest/disease dynamics of groundnut crop. Association rule and multivariate regression mining techniques/algorithms were propose developed /tailor-made to turn the data into useful information/ knowledge/relations/trends to know crop-weather- environment-pest/disease continuum. These findings have been used for development of prediction models (cumulative and non-cumulative) followed by a web based pest/disease decision support system.
