Dolichos bean or Hyacinth bean, Lablab purpureus (L).Sweet. (Syn. Dolichos lablab Roxb.) under the family Fabaceae (Leguminosae) and having Chromosome No.: 2n = 2x = 22 is one of the most ancient among the cultivated plants. Young, immature pods are cooked and eaten like green beans. It is grown throughout the tropical regions of Asia, Africa and America. In India, it is grown extensively in the cool season in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Maharashtra. The pods are one of the rich sources of protein and it also provides fair amount of carbohydrates, calcium, phosphorus sodium, magnesium and iron, b-carotene, riboflavin, thiamine and nicotinic acid.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
Dolichos bean or Hyacinth bean has been originated in India as wild forms of this bean are found in this country. From India, it was introduced to China, Western Asia, Egypt and other tropical countries of South and South-east Asia and Africa. Vegetable and pulse type dolichos bean belong to two distinct botanical varieties under Lablab purpureus viz., Lablab purpureus var. typicus and Lablab purpureus var. lignosus, respectively. Various forms and cultivars of both the cultivated types are available in India.

Dolichos bean is known as Lablab bean, hyacinth bean or sem. Grown as field crop in MP, Maharashtra, AP and TN. Genus Dolichus is renamed as Lablab (Syn. D. lablab, D. purpureus, Lablab niger, L. bvulgaris) and Lablab purpureus name is widely accepted. Dolichos lablab L. (synonyms Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet.) is leguminous pod vegetable grown in tropics and few temperate countries. Lablab niger var. lablab is synonym to Dolichos lablab var. typicus where long axis of seed is parallel to suture and is vegetable type. Lablab niger var. lignosus synonym to Dolichos lablab var. lignosus where long axis of seed is perpendicular to suture and is pulse type.

Dolichos bean, [Lablab purpureus (L.) Sweet] var. typicus (2n=22) also known as Indian bean or sem is one of the vital leguminous vegetables grown in India for its tender green pods. Both pole types and bush types are commercially grown. It is predominantly cultivated in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and North-East India. Protein, minerals, vitamins and f ibers are abundant in Dolichos bean. Bush-type vegetable dolichos unlike the pole-type dolichos (which are generally grown during the winter season as they require short day) are thermosensitive and can be grown year-round.

Dolichos is a versatile and valuable leguminous crop, offering multiple benefits. It boasts a high protein content of 3.6% and fiber content of 1.8%. The dry seed is composed of a protein content ranging from 23.0% to 28.0%. The pods are abundant in phenols, with levels ranging from 1.7 to 9.67 mg/100 g, making them a valuable source of antioxidants. Furthermore, dolichos serves as an excellent source of amino acids, particularly lysine, along with vitamins such as A, C, and riboflavin, and essential minerals (Ca, Fe, Mg, S, Na and P). The seeds of dolichos contain a flavonoid, kievitone, recognized for its potential in combating breast cancer. Additionally, the presence of tyrosinase in the seeds indicates promising possibilities for treating hypertension in humans. Dolichos beans are utilized for various medicinal purposes, acting as stomachic, anthelmintic, diuretic, aphrodisiac, antispasmodic, digestive, febrifuge, and carminative agents. Furthermore, they are rich in bioactive compounds that offer significant benefits in treating specific ailments such as liver problems, diabetes and tumors.

Domestication is the process of adapting wild plant species for human cultivation and consumption and it has played a pivotal role in shaping modern agriculture. Since the dawn of civilization, humans have selectively bred plants to enhance desirable traits, such as increased yield, improved taste, and resistance to pests and environmental stresses. Through domestication, early agriculturalists inadvertently altered the genetic makeup of wild progenitors, favouring traits that aligned with their needs and preferences. This process involved selecting and propagating plants with desired characteristics over successive generations gradually transforming once-unruly wild species into more docile, productive and palatable varieties. The domestication of crop plants was a gradual and ongoing process, often spanning thousands of years. It required keen observation experimentation, and an inherent understanding of plant biology and genetics even before these concepts were formally understood. This patient and persistent effort by our ancestors paved the way for the development of diverse and nutritious food sources, enabling the establishment of sedentary communities and the rise of complex civilizations. While modern breeding techniques have advanced significantly, the fundamental principles of domestication remain a cornerstone of crop improvement efforts. By understanding the historical significance and underlying mechanisms of domestication, we can better appreciate the invaluable contributions of our ancestors and continue to build upon their legacy, ensuring a sustainable and diverse food supply for generations to come.
The current state of food systems is being challenged due to the heavy reliance on a limited number of resource-intensive staple crops. The emphasis on maximizing yield and the consequent reduction in diversity over the course of domestication history has led to the development of contemporary crops and agricultural practices that are environmentally unsustainable, susceptible to the impacts of climate change, lacking in essential nutrients, and contributing to social inequalities. For many years, researchers have advocated for diversification as a viable solution to tackle the issues surrounding global food security. In this context, we present a vision for a new phase of crop domestication, which aims to expand the range of crop diversity. This approach involves active engagement and benefits for three key components of domestication: a) the cultivated crops themselves, b) the surrounding ecosystems, and c) the human populations depending on these crops. We delve into the potential of current tools and technologies to initiate a revival of diversity within existing crops, enhance the value of underutilized crop varieties, and introduce new crops into cultivation. This multipronged strategy aims to reinforce genetic diversity, promote resilient agroecosystems, and establish a more varied and robust food system. The successful execution of this renewed phase of domestication hinges on a bold commitment from researchers, funders, and policymakers to invest in both fundamental and practical research efforts. As we navigate the challenges of the anthropocene epoch, characterized by significant human impact on the environment, the process of domestication offers a pathway to construct more diverse and adaptable food systems that can better serve humanity’s needs.

Domestication of Livestock

Domestication (from Latin domesticus) is the process whereby a  population  of  animals  or plants is changed at the genetic level through a process of selection, in order to accentuate traits that benefit humans. It differs from taming in that a change in the phenotypical expression and genotype of the animal occurs, whereas taming is simply the process by which animals become accustomed to human presence. In the Convention on Biological Diversity, a domesticated species is defined as a “species in which the evolutionary process has been influenced by humans to meet their needs.” Therefore, a defining characteristic of domestication is artificial selection by humans. Humans have brought these populations under their control and care for a wide range of reasons: to produce food or valuable commodities (such as wool, cotton, or silk), for types of work (such as transportation, protection, and warfare), scientific research, or simply to enjoy as companions or ornaments. Plants domesticated primarily for aesthetic enjoyment in and around the home are usually called house plants or ornamentals, while those domesticated for large-scale food production are generally called crops. A distinction can be made between those domesticated plants that have been deliberately altered or selected for special desirable characteristics and those plants that are used for human benefit, but are essentially no different from the wild populations of the species. Animals domesticated for home companionship are usually called pets while those domesticated for food or work are called livestock or farm animals.

In literal sense a species is called underutilized whose potential has not been properly realized. These underutilized crops (referred to also by other terms such as minor, orphan, neglected, underutilized, underexploited, underdeveloped, lost, new, novel, promising, alternative, local, traditional, niche crops) have been included in world-wide plans of action after having successfully raised the interest of decision makers. Wealth of plant genetic diversity currently available holds vast potential. We use only small number of crop plants for our basic requirements. Many thousands of wild plants have great economic and cultural importance and tremendous market potential for vast numbers of people throughout the world. But the majority are still unknown to science. Plant genetic resources have gained global attention in  recent past by agricultural and environmental institutions. Conservation and use of genetic resources attracted  considerable attention. Value of biological diversity in economic terms is very important for human society.

Abstract

Pomegranate, Punica granatum L., is an ancient fruit tree native to the Middle East. All plant parts are rich source of the various secondary metabolites that accounts for its antioxidant and health-promoting activity. A strong genetic control on anthocyanin production is responsible for variability in the color of peel and arils of pomegranate. Characterization, cloning and expression of the genes related with anthocyanin and tannin production provides routes for engineering of these complex pathways. Recent studies on pomegranate genome sequencing have elucidated several biochemical pathways and candidate genes that could assist to increase production of potent bioactive compounds in near future. This will further facilitate our understanding to some exclusive biological processes that plays a significant role in pomegranate breeding.

Donkeys can also be termed as ass (Equus africanus asinus) and is a domesticated member of the horse family, Equidae with chromosome number 62. The Wild ass of Africa, E. africanus is the wild ancestor of the donkey. For approximately 5000-7000 years, the donkey has been used as a working animal.

An adult male donkey is a jack or jackass, an adult female is a jenny or jennet, and an immature donkey of either sex is a foal. Jacks are often mated with female horses (mares) to produce mules, the less common hybrid of a male horse (stallion) and jenny is called hinny. NBAGR-ICAR has registered three breeds of donkey till date.

1. Kachchhi

• These donkeys are found in Kachchh district of Gujarat.

• Coat colour is mainly grey (dorsal surface grey and ventral surface white) followed by white, brown and black.

• Forehead is convex. Nasal bone is straight.

• Height at wither ranges from 77 to 115 cm.

• Docile in temperament.

• Only donkeys are used for agricultural purposes like inter cultivation for weed removing.

• Also utilized for transportation as donkey cart, as pack animal during pastoralist migration, etc.

Abstract

The milk from non-bovine species is gaining considerable attention mainly due to the fact that it is consumed by sensitive consumers (infants and elderly). Donkey milk possesses various health benefits, namely, anti-microbial activity, immunomodulation, hypoallergenicity, prevention of cardiovascular diseases which are elaborated in details here. Similarity in nutrition profile among donkey and human milk is discussed in detail. The donkey milk’s yield, its milking technique, effect of lactation on chemical composition and the microbial aspect is also described. As, availability of donkey milk is limited, therefore its processing becomes essential for its usage over a long period of time. Preparation of various donkey milk products like yoghurt, ice cream and cheese are also described here.

Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive diagnostic tool being employed in evaluating blood flow in major vessels, veins and arteries. Information regarding perfusion in an organ or an area can also be obtained through Doppler ultrasonography. Doppler ultrasound is an important part of echocardiographic examination in dogs and cats. Its more recent application is in the investigation of the tissue wall motion while evaluating the heart. B-mode ultrasound is used to examine cardiac structures.

7.1 Measurement of Radiation Dose

Radiation dosimetry involves the measurement of the energy actually absorbed in a substrate exposed to ionizing radiation. The radiation may be either electromagnetic or corpuscular in nature. 1. Introduction

India’s population is likely to reach 1.7 billion by 2050, making it as the thickly populated nation in the world. To feed the ever rising population, food production need augment by 70%. This augment is very serious since Indian agriculture is facing numerous challenges due to disintegration of holdings, ill brunt of climate change, sustaining investment, soaring fluctuation in prices and production, unorganized markets, inconsistent market performance, renovation of agricultural land intended for non-farm purposes and enlarged cost of production (Gangaiah, 2018). The current conditions of the Indian agriculture sector reflect that the farmers are facing severe deficit of income which is to an imperative issue and as a result dissuading the rural youth to take up agriculture as livelihood operation.

Introduction

Agriculture is the main occupation in India which engages nearly 119 million of farmers and 144 million landless labourers (Census 2011). According to the Agriculture Census (2012), about 80 per cent of Indian farmers fall under the small and marginal category. The average size of land holding in India is 1.15 ha which will tend to decrease in coming years due to land fragmentation, industrialization and urbanization which are forcing farmers to quit farming and look for more viable livelihood options (Bhattacharyya et al. 2018). Specially small and marginal farmers are exposed to high risk of farming due to climate vagaries, uncertainties in production and market demand, lack of access to support services and markets, limited scope of farm mechanization and the consistent failure of half-hearted government efforts which have been unable to make farming an exciting profession to the old as well as new generations. In Indian context, agriculture has never been a profession for the literate section of the society due to lower production and profitability. NSSO report (2012-13), in alignment with the current scenario, says 40 per cent farmers want to quit agriculture if they get alternatives.

Owing to several biotic and abiotic stresses, the problem of agrarian distress in India has accentuated in recent years. Government of India has taken initiative in its annual budget of 2016-17 and initiate a number of steps to alleviate agrarian distress and improve the situation before the fight for food security faces disastrous challenge from mass migration of Indian farmers to other occupations. The steps taken by the Government of India are improving irrigation efficiency, providing crop insurance, improving market infrastructure and its efficiency, promoting organic farming, restoring soil health and so on.

Introduction

The Eastern India Region comprising of Eastern UP (8.67 Mha), Bihar (9.41 Mha), Jharkhand (7.97 Mha), West Bengal (8.87 Mha), Assam (7.84 Mha), Odisha (15.57 Mha), and Chhattisgarh (13.51 Mha) occupies about 21.8% of the country’s geographical area. Endowed with plenty of natural resources, the Eastern Region of India states has not yet been able to harness its potential adequately in terms of improving agricultural productivity, poverty alleviation and livelihood improvement. Of the total geographical area of 71.84 M ha, the net cultivated area in the region is 31.21 Mha with a cropping intensity of 150%. The total food grain production from the region is 86.71 million tonnes (31.5% of the total production of India) during 2016-17. There is a large gap between potential and productivity of major field crops, livestock, fisheries, etc. in the region.

Introduction

Owing to several biotic and abiotic stresses, the problem of agrarian distress in India has accentuated in recent years. The Indian government set a target of doubling farmers’ income by 2022–2023 in its annual budget for 2016–17 and started a number of initiatives to achieve this goal, including better irrigation efficiency, crop insurance, market infrastructure improvements, organic farming promotion, soil health restoration, and others. The pathway for doubling of farmers’ income encompasses several dimensions, from production to post-harvest management. These include: bridging yield gap, crop diversification, improvements in total factor productivity and proper management of irrigation (GoI, 2007, Evenson et al. 1999) alongwith the provisions of market and institutional support for efficient post-harvest management. With respect to Himachal Pradesh, in order to improve the productivity levels of existing crop enterprises and promote the diversification of cropping systems, various steps have been taken by the line departments which include the creation of water harvesting and irrigation infra-structure, skill up gradation of farmers, subsidy on critical inputs like seed, fertilizers, plant protection materials, market access through information technology and village road network, crop insurance schemes, etc. The impact of these interventions is reflected through the continuous increase in the productivity levels and inclination of farming community towards the adoption of new crop enterprises vegetables and fruit crops.

Introduction

Dry-land horticulture has immense potential in providing nutrition rich food, social security and eco-restoration for the inhabitants of desert or rainfed and tribal land-areas of the north-western parts of India. Most of the recent past advances in Indian Horticulture are with production technology for favorable agro-climate, however, the vast and diverse land-scape of hot desert, arid, semiarid and tribal area is yet not getting logical thought for resource based horticultural development. The native crop–plants both annual and perennial are equally playing vital role for food, fodder as well income especially in the hot arid and sem-arid areas of Rajasthan where animal husbandry is also an integral component of the farming system. The monsoon supported arid zone crop-plants are drought tolerant and even the harvest failure in kharif season/ conventional cropping is very high and it is estimated 50–60% in most of the years only because of uncertainty in rain’s pattern. Based on my research experience and SWOT analysis over 25 years, it is accomplished that this hot arid zone has excellent horticultural potential with wide and varied opportunities of crop production, utilization of resources and eco-restoration (Samadia, 2016).

Due to its good economic prospects, goat rearing under intensive and semi-intensive system for commercial production has been gaining momentum for the doubling the income of the farmers. High demand of goat and its products with potential of good economic returns have been deriving many progressive farmers, business, professionals, ex-servicemen and educated youths to take up the goat enterprise on a commercial scale. The emerging favorable market conditions and easy accessibility to improved goat technologies are also catching the attention of entrepreneurs. A number of commercial goat farms have been established in different region of the country. Initially, farmer may face a number of problems like high cost of production, high mortality and low price of the produce, but proper training and experience may resolve this problem. In an average, mortality in the goat farm is 3-8% per annum. The contribution of goat in total livestock is 27.80% which is a major share goat in total livestock. The rank of India in Goat population is 2^nd.

Introduction

Sheeps were first domesticated by human being, many thousands of years ago for their wool, meat and skins. It provides a source of income to the shepherds through sale of wool and animal. Sheep do not need expensive building to house them and require less labour than other kinds of livestock. The foundation stock is relatively cheap and the flock can be multiplied rapidly. Dough is a complex mixture of flour constituents, water, salt and other ingredients depending upon the requirements of end-products. It is the principal intermediate stage in the transformation of wheat into different end-use products. Rheological properties of dough determine the behaviour of dough during mixing, rounding and molding used in making different products and also effect on the quality of finished product. Therefore, understanding the various features of dough rheology and their relations with product quality is important. The importance is enhanced further because of mechanization and automation of baking industry. Dough is composed of continuous phase in which gas cells are dispersed. The continuous phase is called “dough phase”. It consists of starch granules embedded in protein matrix along with some lipids, cell remnants and yeast cells in fermented dough. Gas production and retention is the most comprehensive quality requirements of the dough for bread making. The ability of the wheat dough to retain gas during fermentation and oven rise is unique. This depends on the ability of the dough to be stretched into thin membranes because of protein phase.

6.1. Downy mildew of Sugarcane

Pathogen: Sugarcane downy mildew can be caused by four species:

    1)    Peronosclerospora sacchari
    2)    P. miscanthi
    3)    P. spontanea and
    4)    P. philippinensis

Major Host
Hosts in the Saccharum genus include: S. officinarum, S. robustum, S. spontaneum and S. edule.

Minor Host
Other hosts include Zea mays (maize), teosinte (Euchlaena mexicana), Sorghum halapense (Johnson grass), S. sudanense (Sudan grass), Tripsacum dactyloides (Gama grass), Sorghum bicolor (broom corn). Other studies suggest there are 18 species that are systemically infected in the sub-family Panicoideae; these include species of Andropogon, Bothriochloa, Eulalia, Schizachyrium and Sorghum (Bonde & Peterson 1981)

Geographic Distribution
The disease is restricted to the Pacific, South Asia and South East Asian regions viz Fiji, India, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, Taiwan and Thailand (Suma & Magarey 2000).

It is found worldwide in tropical and subtropical regions. Sorghum downy mildew is widely distributed in following countries.
Asia: Bangladesh, China, India, Iran, Israel, Japan, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Thailand and Yemen (CMI, 1988; Jeger et al., 1998).In India though the losses are reported from the states of U.P. and Madhya Pradesh, the disease is very common and destructive in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra

Geographical distribution
 
It’s spread has been limited to Asia and Europe.

Symptoms

Downy mildew begins as yellow leaf spots of irregular size and angular shape, limited by leaf veins. Opposite the spots, on the underside of leaves, the fungus emerges from stomata to sporulate. Mycelial growth on the underside of leaves is best seen in early morning when dew turns the mycelium a lustrous violet-grey colour (Fig 5.1). Lesions enlarge quickly and affected leaves become contorted. Leaves soon become necrotic and fall off. Whole plants and entire fields may follow this pattern.

History and Epidemics
In France downy mildew is called as “le mildiou” while in Germany it is called as “falscher Meltau”. Downy mildew is undoubtedly of American origin and was probably indigenous on the wild grapes of the eastern United States, from which it spread to the cultivated vineyards when these were established by the colonists. It was not known to occur outside America until 1870, although it was first described from this country as early as 1834. In the early part of the last century various horticultural writers referred to the destructive action of the mildew on cultivated grapes.
Its history in Europe dates back to the time when French vine-yards were suffering from the grape Phylloxera, an aphid insect pest that was also introduced into Europe from America. It was found that rootstocks of the American species were more resistant to this aphid than was the European vinifera grape, and therefore consequently around 1870 importations of the American Vines were made into Europe, and somewhere around 1875 the downy mildew fungus evidently was also introduced with these importation and became established, and by 1878 it was prevalent enough to cause alarm. Since the European vinifera grapes were far more susceptible to this disease than were the American species, it soon became a real menace to grape culture throughout the humid sections of Europe.

10.1. Downy mildew of Plantago psyllium

Downy mildew is the major and serious disease of Plantago particularly P. ovata. It causes enormous quantitative and qualitative loss and often becomes a limiting factor in the successful cultivation of the crop (Desai and Desai, 1969). Usually the disease appears at the time of spike initiation.

Pathogen: Peronospora alta and P. plantaginis

Geographical distribution
Plantago ovata under commercial cultivation has been reported to suffer from downy mildew disease. Downy mildew occurs on ripe seeds of Spanish, French and European plantago. The downy mildew is a native of Mediterranean region especially Southern Europe, North Africa and West Pakistan.
The plantago commercially cultivated in Gujarat and to a limited extent in Haryana and Rajasthan provinces in India is observed to be infected with downy mildew.

4.1. Downy mildew of sunflower

Pathogen: Plasmopara halstedii (Fort.) Berl.& de Tom.

Hosts

Over 100 host species from a wide range of genera in the family Asteraceae have been reported susceptible to this pathogen, including wild and cultivated species of Helianthus, e.g. sunflowers, which is the principal economic host. Wild Asteraceae hosts (e.g. species of the genera Helianthus, Artemisia, Xanthium, etc.) may also occur widely in the corresponding areas but their potential as reservoirs of the pest is not yet known (Virányi, 1984). For lists of hosts see Leppik (1966) and Novotel’nova (1966).

Downy mildew has been reported on a wide range of ornamentals, especially those in home gardens, but only in a few instances the diseases have been sufficiently severe and widespread .Generally the diseases have been of most concern in a few ornamentals grown as crops either out doors or under glass or in nurseries, where many seedlings are raised in close proximity, often under humid conditions which favour this disease. 11.1. Downy Mildews of Anemone (Windflower)

Two downy mildews are reported on cultivated anemones. The one is caused by Plasmopara pygmaea while the other is caused by Peronospora sp.

It was first recorded in Britain on decaen anemones near Liskeard, Cornwall, in september 1917

Symptoms
It causes blackening of the foliage of the planting. The sporangiophores emerged from stomata at the periphery of the blackened zone. The fine white mildew covers the under surface of the leaves. Plants become discolored with aborted stamens. Oospores are found in the discolored tissues.

3.1. Downy mildew of peas
It is an important disease of pea crop particularly in those areas where cool and wet climate is prevalent during its cultivation. The disease during favourable weather conditions causes considerable yield losses.
Pathogen: Peronospora viciae (formerly P. pisi)
Host range
Vigna faba, Vigna sativa. Pisum arvensis, P.sativum, Lathyrus sativus, Vicia hirsuta, Vicia sativa, Vicia villosa (Dixon, 1981).
Geographical distribution
Reports of the pathogen are from different countries on different crop host.
On Pea- Berkeley in England first discovered the disease in 1846 (Chupp and Sherf, 1960) and since then it has been found in all parts of the world where the crop is grown intensively. The occurrence of the disease has been reported from Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Denmark, France, Germany, Kenya, Netherland, New Zealand, Rhodesia, Spain, Tasmania, USA, Ukrain, Italy, Poland and Australia (Dixon,1981). In India it is prevalent in Indogangetic plains including Uttar Pradesh and Punjab (Bains and Dhaliwal, 1986).

9.1. Downy mildew of Opium poppy
Pathogen: Peronospora arborescens (Berk) de Bary

Geographical distribution and losses
This is one of the serious and widespread diseases of opium poppy. The disease was observed epiphytotic in Argentina, Germany, Iran, Hungary, Austria and India. The disease was first recorded in India in 1918 and with the introduction of susceptible varieties, the disease rapidly became serious due to favourable environment in its cultivation area in India. Downy mildew now occurs in most regions in India (Rajasthan, Madhya Padesh and Uttar Pradesh). Downy mildew caused 20-30% loss of yield of opium latex. The secondary infection of downy mildew was found to reduce 11-22% latex.

Symptoms
The infection spread upwards from lower leaves. The entire leaf surface is covered by downy mildew coating, which is composed of sporangiophores and sporangia of the pathogen (Fig 9.1). The stem, branches and even capsules are attacked resulting in the premature death of the plants. The infection start from the moment the seed germinate and persist during the whole period of growth (Yossi fovitch 1929). Khristov (1943) reported that the pathogen often cause abnormal development in opium poppy. The pathogen also causes hypertrophy and curvature of stem and flower stalks.

8.1. Downy mildew of cruciferous vegetables

Cruciferous vegetables are important Kharif vegetable crops, which are grown both for table and seed purpose. This vegetable group constitutes crops like cauliflower, cabbage, radish, turnip, broccoli, brussel’s sprouts; knol-khol and rutabaga .The vegetable crops affected by downy mildews pathogen Peronospora parasitica are members of the genus Brassica and the downy mildew diseases on these crops are widespread in those regions of the world, which have cool and wet climate.

The downy mildew disease on cruciferous crops has worldwide distribution. The disease was first recorded in 1883 in USA on Brassica spp. (Farlow, 1883). In India, this disease was first reported by Butler in 1918. TEACHING PERSPECTIVES

Anatomy education has entered newer and more innovative methods of teaching. “Vesalius” referred to as a founder of modern Anatomy struggled to make dissection of cadavers mandatory in 16th century and its significance is again being questioned today in search of substitutes. Hence use of alternatives to dissected specimens and multimedia teaching methodologies to teach anatomy and basic principles of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Surgery have gradually become more popular.

The main purpose of this lecture note is to provide basic information on patent drafting skills and train applicants for drafting a patent in clear and concise manner.

Dragon fruit  (Hylocereus undatus (Haw.) Britton and Rose) is a climbing vine cactus species which has received worldwide recognition, first, as an ornamental plant and then as a fruit crop. Its fruit is the most beautiful in the family Cactaceae with a bright red skin studded with green scales and white or red flesh with tiny black seeds.  The flower is so beautiful that it is nicknamed as Noble Woman or Queen of the Night.  The juicy flesh of the fruit is delicious in taste. It is well established as a new crop in Australia, China, Israel, Malaysia, Nicaragua, Taiwan and Vietnam. In Vietnam, it has become a major export crop, which fetches higher prices than even Durian, the King of Fruits in south East Asia.  The main constraint is that the establishment cost is high due to use of trellises for climbing. The cost of establishment will depend on the type of trellises used, and experience in Sri Lanka shows that relatively cheap trellising is sufficient. The other agronomic practices are easy and less expensive; maintenance cost is low and aftercare is minimal due to fewer pest and disease attacks. Further, the biggest advantage of this crop is that once planted, it grows for about 20 years, and one hectare could accommodate about 800 Dragon fruit plants.

Dragon fruit, commonly known as pitaya/pitahya (Hylocereus sp.) is a  climbing perennial cacti belonging to the Cactaceae family and the subfamily Cactoidea of the tribe Cactea (Raveh et al., 1993). It is a perennial climbing cactus plant native to tropical areas of North, Central and South America. Main countries growing dragon fruit are Vietnam, Colombia, Mexico, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Thailand and Taiwan. Cultivation also occurs in Australia, Israel and Reunion Island. The European Union and Asia, especially China are the largest import markets of dragon fruits (Vinas et al., 2012).

Drainage - definition

Agricultural drainage is the artificial removal and safe disposal of excess water either from the land surface or soil profile, more specifically, the removal and safe disposal of excess gravitational water from the crop root zone to create favourable conditions for crop growth to enhance agricultural production.

Benefits of drainage

a)It provides better soil environment for plant growth by creating favourable soil aeration conditions.

b)It improves the soil structure and in turn increases the soil infiltration.

c)High infiltration capacity reduces soil erosion.

d)It hastens the warming of the soils and maintains desirable soil temperature, which accelerates plant growth and bacterial activity.

e)It promotes increased leaching of salts and prevents accumulation of salts in the crop root zone.

SUMMARY

The natural drainage systems are severely affected by the development processes and thus increased in waterlogged and salt affected areas. In major and medium irrigation projects due to inadequate designs coupled with poor management practices has raised groundwater table and in turn sizeable command areas are being affected both by water logging and soil salinization, Water logging and salt problem have been experienced in irrigation projects all over the country. Both adversely affect the growth and the yield of the crops. An area with water table within 2 m from the land surface is called as water logged area. It is potential to water logging if water table is between 2-3 m from the land surface. It has been estimated that around 16.71 million hectare land is affected by salt and waterlogging in India. The drainage is the remedy to these problems for sustainable agriculture.

            Drainage is defined as the natural or artificial removal of surplus ground- and surface water and dissolved salt from the land in order to enhance agriculture production. In the case of natural drainage the excess waters flows from the fields to lakes, swamps, streams and rivers. However, in an artificial system surplus ground or surface water is removed by means of sub surface or surface conduits. Improved drainage create a healthier environment for plant growth, It conserve soil and water; and provide drier field conditions for ease in farm operations for the crop production. Agricultural drainage is must to realize the full benefit of irrigation.

Agricultural land drainage is adopted for removal of excess surface and subsurface water, either from irrigation or rainfall in order to improve the profitability of land use.  Drainage also plays a role in removal of salts from the root zone. Therefore, land drainage is closely linked to irrigation in arid and semi arid regions. India has a long history of practicing irrigation and drainage in its semi arid irrigated regions. During the ancient times in the Indus Valley dams and drainage system were built for cultivation of different crops. The earlier experience of drainage was more concerned with surface drainage because from time immemorial India has been experiencing floods of varying magnitudes.

Geomorphometric analysis is the measurement of the threedimensional geometry of landforms and has traditionally been applied to watersheds, drainages, hill slopes, beaches, and other groupings of terrain features. In particular basin morphometric parameters have received a lot of attention from hydrologists and geomorphologists since watersheds (catchments) have been used for analysis of various physical ecosystem processes, including soil erosion, deposition, runoff, stream discharge, sediment yield, sedimentation of streams, irradiation by sunlight, evaporation, evapotranspiration, and nutrient distribution. The study of morphometric parameters, which include variables such as average basin slope, the basin elongation ratio, compactness ratio, basin relief and stream density. Some parameters, such as slope length or stream sinuosity, can be used to represent both basin and hill slope, or basin and stream channel properties.

The main task before geomorphologists is to use an ideal unit of the earth surface for the study of its landforms. Drainage is the natural or artificial removal of excess water from a surface or sub-surface from an area or field or soil or greenhouse. The internal drainage of most agricultural soils in greenhouse is good enough to prevent severe waterlogging. Water logging creates anaerobic conditions that harm root growth in absence of oxygen. Soils need artificial drainage to improve production or to manage water supplies in certain conditions. Though the roots need moisture but they need oxygen too and poor drainage is g result in roots rotting and death of plants.

The irrigation water inside the greenhouse may accumulate and cause anaerobic condition. Similarly plants in pots should not accumulate water. Water should not stand in pots and beds for longer period. If it stays longer drainage is poor and needs to be corrected. It is better to have good drainage system in greenhouses or protected structures.

Besides irrigation rains water seeps in the greenhouse. The drainage system prevents running or its accumulation in low lying portion of the greenhouse. Drainage system in greenhouses is a must for avoiding damage to the crops.

A drainage system is a network of structures, channels, pipes, and natural features designed to manage and control the flow of water, primarily rainwater or surface runoff, away from inhabited areas, agricultural land, and infrastructure. The primary purpose of a drainage system is to prevent flooding, erosion, and water logging, thereby safeguarding public health and property, as well as ensuring the efficient use of land.

Surface Water Management: Surface water, which includes rainfall and other forms of precipitation, needs to be managed effectively to prevent damage to properties and the environment. Drainage systems collect this water and direct it away from vulnerable areas.

Catchments: A catchment or watershed is the area of land where rainwater collects and drains into a specific river, lake, or other water body. Understanding catchment areas is crucial in designing drainage systems because it helps determine how much water needs to be managed.

Protected cultivation of vegetable crops refers to creation of favourable environmental conditions around vegetable plants, offsetting or minimizing the detrimental effects of prevailing or expected to prevail abiotic and biotic factors. In open fields, vegetables face several abiotic and biotic stresses, resulting in lower or poor or no yield. This condition is altered by using different protected structures for cultivation and/or nursery production. Vegetables which are transplanted using seedlings should be produced by raising seedlings under protected conditions. Protected conditions ensure production of healthy seedlings. The use of healthy seedlings ensures better and higher production of vegetables both under protected conditions and open field conditions. Nursery grown in nursery trays can be transported long distances and can wait till field is ready or human resources is available for transplanting.
