Principles
The principles involved in thermotherapy is that the pathogens present in seed material are inactivated or eliminated at temperatures nonlethal for the host tissues.The exact mechanism by which heat inactivates the pathogen is not fully understood. However, it is universally accepted that heat causes inactivation and not immobilization of the pathogen by heat. Th rate at which the pathogen is inactivated is determined by temperature, the higher the temperature, the faster is the inactivation. At constant temperature, the drop in the density of pathogenic inoculum.
Methods
Following physical methods are employed for reduction or elimination of primary inoculums that may be present in seed, soil, or planting material.
i. Hot water treatment (HWT)
Hot water treatment is widely used for the control of seed borne pathogens, especially bacteria and viruses. A list of various important diseases claimed to have been controlled by hot water treatment is given in Table-1.

Introduction.
The Cultural practices which includes manipulation /or adjustment of crop production techniques have been as old as possibly agriculture itself. In early stages of agriculture development, the growers through their experiences and observations had known that repeated cultivation of a particular crop species or variety on a piece of land often resulted in crop diseases. By proper crop rotations they had been avoiding such diseases. As a matter of fact, in the present day agriculture, cultural practices are being considered as essential backup methods for plant disease management. Cultural practices often offer the opportunity to alter the environment, the condition of the host, and/or the behavior of the causal agent, to achieve economic management of disease. Most cultural practices used to control plant disease are preventive in nature. Integration of cultural practices, host resistance and pesticides or biocontrol agents may be necessary to provide options for controlling economically important plant diseases.

Managing plant diseases is necessary to preserve the quantity and quality of food, feed, and fiber that producers worldwide produce. To avoid, lessen, or manage plant diseases, several strategies may be employed. Aside from using effective horticultural and agronomic techniques, growers frequently largely depend on chemical pesticides and fertilizers. The remarkable increases in crop productivity and quality over the past 100 years have been largely attributed to such agricultural inputs. However, fear-mongering by certain opponents of pesticides and environmental degradation from excessive and improper use of agrochemicals have prompted significant shifts in public perceptions toward pesticide usage in agriculture. Political pressure is present to remove the most dangerous chemicals from the market, and there are stringent limits on the use of chemical pesticides today. Furthermore, because of the potential scale at which such applications could need to be made, the proliferation of plant diseases in natural ecosystems may make the successful application of pesticides impossible. As a result, several researchers studying pest management have concentrated on creating substitutes for artificial chemicals in the management of diseases and pests. Biological controls are one type of alternative among them.

Those characters that enable a plant to avoid, tolerate or recover from attacks of pathogens under conditions that would cause greater injury to other plants of the same species.

Classification of Resistance
Each plant species is affected by hundreds of kinds of pathogen. Frequently a single plant is attacked by hundreds of individuals of a pathogen. Yet, those plants survive which are resistant, adapting a number of mechanisms classified variously.

When the resistance is already present in the plant even I the absence of the pathogen, it is known as preformed, axenic or passive

Plant Quarantine
The term ‘Quarantine’ is derived from the Latin word quarantum, meaning 40. It refers to the 40 days period of detention of ships from countries with bubonic plague and cholera in the Middle Ages. The first such quarantine was imposed in Venice in 1374.Present quarantine laws now include plants. Plant quarantine , restrict entry of plants, plant products, soil, cultures of living organisms, packing materials, and commodities, as well as their containers and means of conveyance to protect agriculture and the environment from avoidable damage by hazardous organisms.They exclude dangerous organisms while permitting plants and plant products to enter. The term exclusion convey this objective more clearly than plant quarantine. Exclusion relates to keeping organisms out; plant quarantine relates to keeping plants out.
In strict sense ‘Plant Quarantine’ refers to the holding of plants in isolation until they are believed to be healthy. Now, broader meaning of the plant quarantine covers all aspects of the regulation of the movement of living plants, living plant parts/plant products between politically defined territories or ecologically distinct parts of them. Intermediate quarantine and post entry quarantine are used respectively to denote the detention of plants in isolationfor inspection during or after arrival at their final destination.

Anti-pathogen Chemicals
The chemical substances that help to retard the activity of pathogens like fungus, bacteria and nematodes are said to be anti-pathogen chemicals.
Aim of use of chemicals in plant disease control
The aim and of use of chemicals in plant disease control are
• To create a toxic barrier between the host surface or tissue and the pathogen .
• To eradicate the pathogen present at a particular site on the host, such as seed, foliage, roots etc.
Functions of chemicals in plant disease control
• Reduction in inoculum density or eradication of inoculum from source of growth, multiplication and survival.
• Inactivaion or destruction of the pathogen when it lands on the treated surface, and
• Cure of the diseased plant.

The overuse of chemical pesticides and farmers’ improper application of them have resulted in a number of issues, including residue in food, feed, and fodder; resistance developing; resurgence, secondary outbreaks; and, most importantly, pollution of the environment. This has caused a condition known as Pesticide Treadmill, which is characterized by the need to apply ever-increasing amounts of chemical pesticides. Integrated Pest/Management was developed as an environmentally sound substitute for the exclusive use of chemicals after Rachel Carson’s book “Silent Spring” in 1962 sparked widespread concern about the overuse of pesticides.
The IDM Concept
In disease management, every alternative control strategy—cultural, biological, mechanical, resistant varieties, physical, etc.—is applied in combination to keep the disease below the threshold of economic injury . In order to control the disease, pesticides are employed if it spreads and hits the economic threshold. With consideration for the agro-ecosystem, this approach to integrated disease management uses the minimum amount of pesticides possible. In reality, we don’t aim for complete control while managing diseases—rather, we let them progress below what is tolerable, such as the economic threshold. Additionally, it offers agents the chance to endure by controlling the diseases and maintaining a particular state of equilibrium. Therefore, the goal of the integrated disease management concept is to manage the disease using all available strategies while achieving positive effects on the environment, society, and economy.

Abstract
This chapter explores the current landscape and future potential of agricultural exports from Bihar, a state with significant agrarian strengths yet modest global trade participation. Despite contributing robustly to India’s production of fruits, vegetables, rice, and livestock, Bihar’s share in national exports remains below 1%. The chapter presents a comprehensive analysis of Bihar’s agricultural export trends, identifying key commodities such as Shahi Litchi, Katarni Rice, Jardalu mangoes, and millets and highlights emerging opportunities through Geographical Indication (GI) tags and high-value crops. A SWOT analysis underscores Bihar’s strategic advantages, such as fertile soil and agro-climatic diversity, alongside weaknesses like infrastructure deficits, low market integration and poor access to export logistics. The chapter further outlines key threats such as flood prone regions, poor irrigation infrastructure, and limited cold storage capacity, while also examining growth potential through investment in multimodal transport, agriprocessing zones, and farmer training. Policy suggestions include the development of export policies financial incentives and SEZs to boost Bihar’s export readiness. Overall, the chapter emphasizes the importance of targeted strategies to transform Bihar into a competitive agri-export hub benefiting smallholder farmers and enhancing rural livelihoods.

Abstract
India, recognized as leading producer of fruits, holds a significant position in global grape cultivation. This chapter comprehensively examines the export performance of fresh grapes from India, focusing on growth patterns, market diversification, competitiveness, and trade direction. During 2019-20, India exported over 193 thousand metric tons of grapes worth Rs. 2,176.88 crores, with the Netherlands, Russia, and the UK being key markets. Using compound annual growth rate (CAGR) analysis, the study finds significant positive trends in grape exports across major destinations. Instability indices reveal moderate fluctuations, with Bangladesh and Hong Kong showing the highest volatility, whereas the UAE demonstrated market stability. The decreasing trend in the Hirschman index indicates growing diversification in India’s grape exports. Comparative advantage analysis (RSCA) suggests India gained competitiveness post-2015. Nominal Protection Coefficient (NPC) values below unity further underscore India’s export price advantage. Mark Chain analysis reveals stable future prospects, with Netherlands projected to remain India’s top grape importer through 2022-23. The findings provide strategic insights for exporters and policymakers to strengthen India’s position in global grape markets by aligning trade efforts with loyal importers and emerging high-value destinations.

Abstract
India holds a dominant position in the global production and export of castor, accounting for nearly 88% of global and leading the international the international castor oil trade. This chapter investigates the status of castor production and trade dynamics, highlighting India’s evolving role in commercial agriculture and export-oriented strategies. Castor, a non-edible oilseed with significant industrial applications, is primarily cultivated in Gujarat, Rajasthan, and Andhra Pradesh. The study explores trends in area, production and yield across states and districts, alongside export trends over a 15 year period (2006-06 to 2019- 20). Results show positive growth in export quantity, value and unit price, despite fluctuations, supported by favourable policies and quality improvements. Using the Markov chain model, the direction of trade analysis reveals China as the most stable and dominant importer, followed by Netherlands and France. The USA also shows emerging potential. Instability indices indicate relatively low volatility in trade metrics. The finding suggest that while India maintains a strong global presence, strategic efforts are needed to sustain existing markets and explore new opportunities, especially in emerging economies offering better prices and reliability.

However, post-harvest losses, infrastructure gaps, and limited value addition hamper its full export potential. In recent years, agricultural exports have surge, with rice, spices, sugar, buffalo meat, and marine products emerging as key contributor. India has also expanded its export footprints across major global markets, including the USA, China, Bangladesh, and the UAE. Recognizing the strategic importance of agri-exports for economic growth, employment generation, and rural development, the government has launched initiatives such as the Agriculture Export Policy (AEP), Agri Export Zones (AEZs), and Market Access Initiatives (MAI). These measures aim to boost market access, infrastructure, and competitiveness. The integration of e-NAM, focus on quality standards, branding through Geographical Indications (GI), and establishment of Agri-Cells in key countries further support India’s goal of becoming a global agriexport powerhouse. This work underscores the importance of a coherent export strategy to enhance farmer income, promote sustainable practices, and position India as a key player in the global agricultural value chain.

ABSTRACT
India’s agricultural exports play a pivotal role in driving economic growth, enhancing rural livelihoods, and generating employment. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development (APEDA), establishedunder the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has significantly contributed to the augmentation of India’s agri-exports through strategic interventions. This chapter explores APEDA’s multifaceted initiatives, including quality control, infrastructure development, product diversification, and digital innovations such as paperless systesm, mobile apps, and virtual trade fairs. Notable efforts include the promotion of Geographical Indication (GI) products, expansion of Agri-Export Zones (AEZs), and international marketing of millets during the International Year of Millets (IYOM 2023). APEDA’s Market Access Initiative (MAI) and Agri- Exchange portal have facilitated global trade linkages, while collaborations with institutions and FPOs have strengthened grassroots connections. Recent achievements include surpassing USD 19.69 billion in agri-export value in 2022- 23 and expanding to over 200 countries. This comprehensive engagement reflects APEDA’s central role in branding Indian agriculture on the global stage and positioning India as a reliable exporter of high-quality food products.

Furthermore, the paper highlights common government initiatives implemented worldwide to enhance agricultural exports, such as trade agreements and negotiations, export promotion programs, market diversification efforts, quality and safety standards compliance, infrastructure development, financial support mechanisms, research and development investments, branding and certification promotion, sustainability and environmental stewardship and capacity building and training. Additionally, the advantages of government initiatives in boosting agricultural exports are discussed, including expanded market access, increased competitiveness, market diversification, better quality and safety standards, infrastructure development and financial support. However, the paper also acknowledges several limitations of these initiatives, including policy inconsistency, bureaucratic red tape, lack of coordination, limited access to finance, infrastructure deficiencies, market access barriers, environmental and social concerns and dependency on external factors.

This chapter undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the dual nature of SPS and TBT measures, acknowledging their public policy rationale while critically examining their role in distorting trade flows, increasing compliance burdens, and eroding competitiveness, especially for exporters in developing economies. It highlights the economic ramifications, operational challenges, and policy complexities inherent in their implementation. Drawing from global best practices and multilateral frameworks, the study advocates for targeted strategies such as regulatory harmonization, improved transparency, enhanced capacity-building and robust dispute resolution mechanisms. Abstract
India’s grape industry has emerged as a key contributor to horticultural exports, driven by increasing production, evolving market strategies, and trade liberalization. This chapter analyses the trends, growth, instability, and export potential of both fresh (HS 080610) and dried grapes (HS 080620) from India between 2004 and 2023. While, India ranks among the top global producers, the fresh grape segment has seen consistent growth in exports, supported by initiatives like APEDA’s GrapeNet traceability system and private-sector innovation through companies like Sahyadri Farms and Mahindra Agri. In contrast, the dried grape segment, despite high growth potential, has faced volatility and continues to show a trade deficit. Using compound growth rates (CGR) and the Cuddy-Della Valle Index (CDVI), the study evaluates performance across production, trade value, and instability metrics. Exports potential maps highlight untapped markets such as the United States, EU, and Southeast Asia. Strengthening post-harvest infrastructure, ensuring compliance with international quality standard, and investing in value addition remain critical for India to enhance its global competitiveness in grape exports.

India is known as the land of spices, while Kerala is often referred to as the spice bowl of the country. Out of the 109 spices acknowledged by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), India cultivates around 63 spices. The Spices Board of India actively encourages the cultivation and trade of 52 spices. This remarkable diversity in spice cultivation is made possible by India’s varied geographical conditions, encompassing all 15 agroclimatic zones, ranging from tropical and subtropical to temperate regions. These diverse conditions enable the cultivation of almost all kinds of spices.

Spices are defined as “spices are those plants, the plant products of which are made use as food adjuncts to add aroma and flavour”. Spices are also defined as per the Internal Organization for Standardization (ISO) as “Spices are Vegetable products, or mixtures thereof, free from extraneous matter, used for flavouring, seasoning and imparting aroma to foods”.
Condiments are defined as “condiments are also spices, products of which are used as food adjuncts to add taste only.” Mainly used for seasoning purpose. Herbs are defined as “dried leaves of aromatic plants used for flavouring food”. Both spices and condiments consist of essential oils which enhance the flavour and taste.

The cardamom of commerce is the dried capsule of Elettaria cardamomum Maton., commonly called the “queen of spices.” Crop is as one of the most significant and highly valued spices globally, it rank  after saffron and vanilla in terms of price and trade significance. The name Elettaria originates from the Tamil word elattari, where ela refers to cardamom fruit, and tari means granules or seeds of the fruit. Meanwhile, the term Cardamomum from the Greek word cardamon, which denotes cardamom. Cardamom is one of the oldest known spices, originated in India’s Southern Western Ghats around 5,000 years ago. It was among the first spices, along with cinnamon, to enter the western trade. Indian cardamom is distinctive in the global spice market due to its superior quality. The dried capsules produce essential oil and oleoresin, which contribute to its aroma and therapeutic properties. These qualities are attributed to the essential oil content (ranging from 3-8%) found in both the seed and husk. The primary components of this oil include 1,8-cineole, terpineol, and limonene.

Black of the commerce is the dried mature fruit of the perennial climbing vine of Piper nigrum L. It is one of the oldest and most significant spices in the world. Black pepper refers to the whole dried fruit, which is still unripe, while white pepper is made from the fruit after the mesocarp has been removed. Among all spice crops, pepper holds the highest share in foreign exchange, earning it the title of the “King of Spices.” An analysis of various types of black pepper from Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Assam revealed the following ranges of values: moisture content (8.7-14.1%), total nitrogen (1.55-2.60%), nitrogen in non-volatile ether extract (2.70-4.22%), volatile ether extract (3.0-4.2%), non-volatile ether extract (3.9-11.5%), alcohol extract (4.4-12.0%), starch (28-49%), crude fibre (8.7- 18.0%), crude piperine (2.8-9%), piperine (spectrophotometrically) (1.7- 7.4%), total ash (3.9-5.7%), and acid-insoluble ash (0.03-0.55%). Starch is the principal constituent of pepper, making up 34.8% of black pepper, 56.5% of white pepper, and 63.2% of decorticated white pepper. Pepper starch consists of small, polygonal granules similar to rice but much smaller. The alkaloid piperine (melting point: 29-30°C) is the primary compound responsible for black pepper’s characteristic biting taste. Other pungent alkaloids present in smaller quantities include chavicine, piperidine, and piperetine.

Ginger of commerce is the rhizome derived from Zingiber officinale. This plant is an herbaceous perennial but usually is cultivated annually. Belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, it is known as Adraka in Sanskrit and Adrak in Hindi. Ginger contains 6.5% oleoresin, commercially known as Gingirene, extracted from ground ginger using solvents. The composition of dry ginger includes 10.85% moisture, 1.8% volatile oil, 19.6% water extract, 6.0% cold alcohol extract, 53% starch, 7.7% crude fibre, 12.4% crude protein, 6.64% total ash, and 0.14% acid-insoluble ash. The volatile oil is a pale yellow liquid with a warm, spicy, sweet, aromatic fragrance and a pungent taste. Its primary constituent is zingiberene, a sesquiterpene, while its pungency is attributed to zingerone. Ginger is known to contain around 200 different volatile compounds.

Turmeric of commerce is the dried rhizomes of Curcuma longa. Cured turmeric contains 5.8% moisture, 8.6% protein, 8.9% fat, 63.0% carbohydrates, 6.9% fibre, 6.8% mineral matter, 0.2% calcium, 0.26% phosphorus, 0.05% iron, 0.01% sodium, 2.5% potassium, 175 IU of vitamin A per 100 g, 0.09 mg of vitamin B1, 0.19 mg of vitamin B2, 49.8 mg of vitamin C, and 4.8 mg of niacin. It provides a calorific value of 390 calories per 100 g. The primary colouring agent in turmeric is curcumin. It is a significant spice, particularly in rice-based cuisines. Curry powder typically contains about 24% turmeric combined with coriander, cumin, cardamom, fenugreek, chillies, ginger, pepper, and dill seeds.

Clove of commerce is the fully grown but unopened dried flower bud of tree Syzygium aromaticum Merrill and Perry, belonging to the family Myrtaceae. The English name “clove” is derived from the Spanish word clavo or the Latin clavus, both meaning “nail,” referring to the shape of the dried clove bud commonly found in the market. Clove is among the orient’s oldest and most valued spices, known as early as the 1st century BC. It is prized both as a spice and for its essential oil. The chemical composition of clove varies based on agroclimatic conditions and post-harvest processes.
The dried clove bud contains approximately 5.4% moisture, 6.3% protein, 13.2% volatile oil, 15.5% non-volatile ether extract (fat), 11.1% crude fibre, 57.7% carbohydrates, 5.0% mineral matter, and 0.24% ash insoluble in HCl. Additionally, it has 0.7% calcium, 0.11% phosphorus, 0.01% iron, 0.25% sodium, and 1.2% potassium. Its vitamin content includes 0.11 mg of B1, 0.04 mg of B2, 80.9 mg of vitamin C, 175 I.U. of vitamin A, and 1.5 mg of niacin per 100 g, providing a calorific value of 430 calories per 100 g. The volatile oil extracted from clove buds consists of eugenol (80-90%) and caryophyllene (4-8%).

Nutmeg of commerce is the dried kernel inside the brown and a thin brittle shell. A scarlet aril or mace surrounds the nutmeg. The Word Myristica is derived from the Greek term Myron, which means a sweet liquid distilled from the plant. Origin and distribution
The distribution of R. serpentina is very wide, is occurrence is sporadic. The plant commonly grows scattered and close to each other. They are widely distributed in the Sub Himalayan tract from Himachal Pradesh to Sikkim and Bhutan, Eastern and Western Ghats, in some parts of central India. Beyond India the plant is distributed in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Burma.
