Earth’s atmosphere is a dynamic and complex system that plays a crucial role in supporting life as we know it. This chapter explores into the fascinating world of this gaseous envelope that surrounds our planet, exploring its composition, structure, and the processes that drive both our daily weather and long-term climate. It includes:
• Composition and Structure: It will begin by examining the unique blend of gases that make up the atmosphere, including nitrogen, oxygen, argon, and trace amounts of others. It will also be explored how the atmosphere is structured into distinct layers (troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and exosphere), each with its own characteristics and role.
• Weather: Weather refers to the short-term conditions of the atmosphere at a specific time and place. We’ll discuss the key elements of weather, such as temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, and precipitation, and how they interact to create the ever-changing weather patterns we experience.
• Climate: In contrast to weather, climate describes the long-term average of atmospheric conditions in a particular region. We’ll investigate the factors that influence climate, including latitude, altitude, proximity to oceans, and atmospheric circulation patterns. We’ll also explore the different climate zones found across the globe.
• Interconnectedness: A key focus of this chapter understands how weather and climate are interconnected. Daily weather patterns are influenced by the same fundamental atmospheric processes that shape long-term climate. For example, the way the sun’s energy interacts with the atmosphere drives both daily temperature variations and global climate patterns.

An earthen dam is an embankment constructed primarily from compacted soil to impound runoff and create a reservoir. Such dams support irrigation, water supply, groundwater recharge, hydropower generation, and flood moderation. Their successful performance depends on suitable site conditions, proper materials, adequate compaction, controlled seepage, stable slopes, and safe disposal of surplus water. This chapter introduces the advantages and limitations of earthen dams, construction materials, types of embankment sections, and their principal components. Particular attention is given to cut-offs, impervious cores, casing or shells, foundations, filters, drainage systems, spillways, outlets, slope protection, and common causes of deterioration or structural failure.

This chapter is an attempt to introduce basic facts about earthquake generation and the role of earthquakes in triggering secondary geohazards. Earthquake, unlike manyother geohazards is yet to be fully understood towards occurrence and magnitude for better mitigation measures. Though unpredictibility of this hazard makes it dangerous, earthquakes seldom kill lives. Instead, poor ability of man-made structures against ground-shaking waves has been the real cause of life loss and damage to property in most of the earthquake incidences. Furthermore, earthquakes generate secondary geohazards such as landslide, failure of dams and reservoirs, etc. Thus, earthquake, as a natural hazard has its own characteristic way of potential impactand hence classifying vulnerability of different regions and creating awareness on potential impact among common public is essential.

INTRODUCTION

The term “earthquake” denotes “shaking/vibration/trembling/ quivering/shuddering/ wobbling of Earth”. Earthquake is the quickest and most unpredictable natural hazard. It is nothing but a series of suddenly generated elastic waves occurring in the Earth due to internal and/or external causes from shallow (few kilometers) to about 700 kilometers depth. It is a form of motion of wave energy transmitted through the surface layer (crust) of the Earth. One generalization that can be made out of scientific and mainstream media information about earthquakes is that, “earthquakes seldom kill; but the associated phenomena such as landslides, flooding, volcanic eruptions and collapse of natural and man-made structures cause the real damage to lives and property”. This chapter is an attempt to describe the basic elements of earthquakes and few mitigation measures.

Introduction

Earthquakes are the most destructive among all the natural hazards. Most of the time, they occur without any warning, which makes them most feared and unpredictable natural phenomena. Globally, on an average two earthquakes of magnitude 8 are known to occur every year. Some of the countries like Japan, China and United States have suffered several damaging earthquakes in the past. India has also experienced a number of high intensity earthquakes in the recent past and more than 650 earthquakes of magnitude >5.0 have been reported in India since 1890. Sixty-nine earthquakes in Delaware (U.S.A.) have been documented or suspected since 1871. Refer to Baxter (2000) for more details about the DGS Seismic Network and for documentation of earthquakes. In the 1930s Charles Richter developed a magnitude scale (Richter scale) which was an objective way of discriminating between large and small shocks using the seismic wave amplitude recorded by seismographs (Richter, 1958).

Earthworms have been on the earth for over 20 million years. In this time they have faithfully done their part to keep the cycle of life continuously moving. Their purpose is simple but very important. They are nature’s way of recycling organic nutrients from dead tissues back to living organisms. Many have recognized the value of these worms. Ancient civilizations, including Greece and Egypt valued the role of earthworms played in soil. The Egyptian Pharaoh, Cleopatra said, “Earthworms are sacred”

4.1 Earthworms

Earthworms belong to Phylum Annelida of animal Kingdom. They are long and cylindrical shape, length of earthworms vary from a few mm to nearly 3mtr as noted in case of Megas colex species found in Australia. The body of earthworms has a large number of grooves. Due to these grooves the body of the earthworm is divided into number of compartments called segments. In mature earthworms, few anterior segments appear swollen due to glandular thickening. This part is called as clitellum. The segments are not clearly seen in this part. There are 2500 to 3,000 species of earthworms in the world which are adapted to range of environment. More than 350 species have been identified in India. The species of earthworms are differentiated mostly on the basis of external features such as length of earthworms, number of segments, position of clitellum and external aperture present on the body. Earthworms were referred by Aristotle as “the intestines of earth and the restoring agents of soil fertility”

Even though the great Indian author Surpala mentioned in his epic ‘Vriksha ayurveda’ (Science of Tree growing) about the value of incorporation of earthworms in soil for better propagation of pomegranate plants in 10th century AD, but Sir Charles Darwin’s recognition to earthworms as ‘Farmer’s friends’ in 1837 in fact, inspired researchers throughout the world to study the role of earthworms in soil ecosystem.

Earthworms are defined as soft, bilaterally symmetrical, tubular segmented worms which contain clitella gland, prostomium lobe in front of mouth and anus at the posterior end. The entire body is divided externally into a series of distinct segments. Scientifically these terrestrial worms are classified under phylum ‘Annelida’ due to presence of annuli or ring segments and class ‘Oligochaeta’ due to presence of few setae or hair like structure on all segments except the first and last ones.

Eastern blotting is a technique to detect protein post translational modifications (PTM) and is an extension of the biochemical technique of western blotting. There are multiple versions of the method, but in general proteins or lipids are blotted from one or two-dimensional SDS-PAGE gel on to a PVDF or nitrocellulose membrane are analyzed for post-translational protein modifications using probes that may detect lipids, carbohydrate, phosphorylation or any other protein modification. Eastern blotting should be used to refer to methods that detect their targets through specific interaction of the PTM and the probe, distinguishing them from a standard Far-western blot. The most common application is lectin blotting, however, a variety of other probes can be used for detecting different PTMs.

History and Multiple Definitions

Definition of the term Eastern blotting is somewhat confused due to multiple sets of authors dubbing a new method as Eastern blotting, or a derivative therof. All of the definitions are a derivative of the technique of Western blotting developed by Towbin in 1979. The current definitions are summarized below in order of the first use of the name, however all are based on some earlier works. In some cases, the technique had been in practice for some time before the introduction of the term.

It is an acute disease of pheasants, chukars, partridges, turkeys, ducks, pigeons and wild birds. The viruses of EEE and WEE are of public health importance as they infect humans and occasionally cause fatal disease. The disease is further significant because of its link to disease in horses.

Etiology

The arboviruses are grouped into 12 different families. The five arboviruses causing disease in birds are Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) virus, Western equine encephalitis (WEE) virus, Highland J (HJ) virus, Israel turkey meningoencephalitis (IT) virus and West Nile Virus WNV. The first three are in Togaviridae, and IT and West Nile Virus (WNV) are in Flaviviridae.

Apart from the heart rate and rhythm, the electrocardiogram also provides information pertaining to the chamber size, i.e. the presence of chamber enlargement in dogs. It can more precisely be evaluated if the P QRS and T complexes are clearly visible without any artifacts. Further, the measurement of the chamber enlargements is only possible when all the segments of the ECG are clearly visible. When the impulse is conducted uninterruptedly from sino-atrial node (SA node) to AV node to the ventricles, the measurement of the amplitude of the complexes (P, QRS, T) is more precise in providing information regarding the presence of chamber enlargement.

Introduction

Horticulture is an intensive but profitable venture with higher output in terms of yield and income per unit area and time. In order to maximize the output, there has been liberal use of inorganic products like fertilizers, pesticides (insectides, fungicides, nematicides, weedicides) and other chemicals. With the continuous application of these chemicals since the last green revolution, the soil and its fertility is showing the sign of fatigue and plants developing resistance to insects, pests and diseases is breaking down and causing overall pollution to soil and water. There is growing evidence of sterility in humans and various other animals, particularly in males, related to the presence of various chemicals and pesticides in the environment. Hence the demand of the hour is looking for some alternative arrangements which are eco-friendly and moreover safe guarding the quality of the produce, which is essential so far as ornamentals are concerned. This is especially true for cut flowers and potted plants. Visible symptoms of insects, pests and diseases, have a major impact on quality. Direct and indirect effects of infections include reduction in growth, reduction in vigor, costs of attempting to maintain crop health, reduction in quality and/or market value (Hadidi et al., 1998). This may cause serious economic losses. In addition, infected plant material may not be acceptable for export.

A Eco/green job, also called a green-collar job is, according to the United Nations Environment Program “work in agricultural, manufacturing, research and development (R&D), administrative, and service activities that contribute(s) substantially to preserving or restoring environmental quality. Specifically, but not exclusively, this includes jobs that help to protect ecosystems and biodiversity; reduce energy, materials, and water consumption through high efficiency strategies; de-carbonize the economy; and minimize or altogether avoid generation of all forms of waste and pollution.

• Livestock play a vital role in rural economy. The combination of livestock and crop farming enables complementarity through productive utilisation of farm by-products and conservation of soil fertility, thus increasing rural farm income. Apart from providing food products like milk, egg and meat, livestock sector generates productive employment and valuable supplementary income to the vast majority of rural households, majority of whom are small and marginal farmers and landless labourers. Growing human population, increasing urbanisation, rising domestic incomes and changing lifestyles in the country have led to increasing demand for livestock products. Livestock like cattle (bulls and cows), buffaloes, sheep and goat are an integral part of India’s socio economic life. Animal husbandry is a part of agricultural economy. It directly supports about five per cent (20 million) of our population. India has two per cent of the geographical area and accounts for 15 per cent of livestock population (400 million). Cows and buffaloes comprise 56.5 per cent of world population.India ranks first, second, third and f ifth in buffalo, cattle and goat, sheep and poultry population in the world, respectively. (Economic Survey, 2008-09). The total livestock population of Tamil Nadu stood at 249.42 lakhs which comprises 4.94, 1.69, 9.10, 6.58 and17.7 per cent of the cattle, buffalos, sheep, goat and poultry population of the country (17th livestock census All India Summary Report, 2004).

1. Introduction
Dyes are compounds after addition to a substrate, for a moment give it a colorthrough a process that modifies the colored substance’s crystal structure (Bafanaet al., 2011). Such varieties of compounds with significant coloring capacityare widely employed in the textile, pharmaceutical, food, photographic, andpaper industries (Zollinger et al., 1987). Dyes can adhere to suitable surfacesthrough methods such as dissolving, forming covalent bonds, complexing withsalts or metals, physically adsorbing, or being mechanically retained (Kirkand Othmer, 2004). The chemical structure and application of dyes determine
their classification. The dye color is produced by a collection of atoms calledchromophores. Chromophore centres, which are responsible for color, consistof various functional groups like azo, anthraquinone,methine, nitro, arylmethane, carbonyl, and others. Additionally, substituents that either donateor withdraw electrons to enhance or create the color of these chromophoresare called auxochromes. Common examples of auxochromes include amine,carboxyl, sulfonate, and hydroxyl groups. There are three methods for dyingtextile materials: batch, continuous, and semi-continuous. Thekind of materialincluding yarn, fabric, fiber, clothing, and fabric structure as well as the generalfiber size of the dye lot, type, and quality standards of the dyed fabric, all playa role in determining the dyeing method used. Among these techniques, theprocess called the batch procedure is the most frequently employed for dyeingtextile materials. (Ogugbue et al., 2011).

Introduction

During the last four decade, spectacular progress has been achieved in agricultural production in the country. Compared with 51 million tones of food grain production in 1950-51, India achieved food grain production of 211.17 million tones during 2001-02, making it not only self sufficient in food production but also in a buffer stock of over 30 million tones. This achievement was because of high intensity cropping and cultivation of high yielding varieties that were highly input responsive. Farmers used chemicals and synthetic pesticides, fertilizers and growth promoters above the level of recommended dose with a motive to get higher yields. In this process the soil, water and environment got polluted besides degradation of natural resources. Paddy is the principle food crop and ranks second in the consumption of pesticides in Tamil Nadu. In order to protect our environment, the state department of agriculture had started advocating eco-friendly agricultural practices in paddy cultivation. In addition to the government efforts, number of non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) also taking intensive efforts to make the farmers to adopt eco friendly agricultural practices. Among the several NGO’s in Tamil Nadu, Agricultural Man Ecology Foundation (AMEF) is a Netherland based NGO found to have taken strenuous efforts to advocate and popularize eco -friendly agricultural practices. It has network with other NGO’s situated all over Tamil Nadu and rendered technical and financial support to them for the promotion of eco-friendly agricultural practices. Keeping this in view, a study was conducted to assess the impact of eco-friendly agricultural practices among the paddy farmers who have trained by the AMEF network NGO’s.

Much of the post-harvest losses of fruits and vegetables in developing countries is due to the lack of proper storage facilities. While refrigerated cool stores are the best method of preserving fruits and vegetables they are expensive to buy and run. Consequently, in developing countries there is an interest in simple low-cost alternatives, many of which depend on evaporative cooling which is simple and does not require any external power supply. India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world after Brazil and China respectively. Storage of fresh horticultural produce after harvest is one of the most pressing problems of a tropical country like India. India’s total fruits and vegetables production is lost during harvest, storage, grading, transport, packaging and distribution in a year which reduces the growers share. Due to their highly perishable nature, about 20-40% of total fruit and vegetable production go waste during various steps of the post-harvest chain, smooth transport and insufficient cool storage space/ facility at farmer’s level and high cost of refrigerated storage so further enhances loss of fruits and vegetables. Temperature and humidity play major role in storage of fruits and vegetables Temperature can be controlled by using energy consuming methods such as air-cooling, hydro-cooling, vacuum-cooling, chilling, ice cooling, freezing, etc.

Organizations like ECOCERT have prepared guidelines for Eco-sustainable fields including guidelines to take care of soils and turf, use of water including recyclation and use of only eco-friendly and certified compost and organic fertilizers.
Typical Golf Courses are heavy users of pesticides and water. UNESCO World Water Development report found that an 18 hole golf course can use as much as 2.3 million liters of water every day. With the increasing awareness and concern about health and environment, the demand for eco-friendly sports fields are on the rise.
Phil Weaver – Chairman of the Professional Golfer Association (PGA) has stated that “we are keen to have a more environmental approach to the golf industry. I am not sure organic is totally achievable but it is a great aim”. A numerous environmental certification system have been set up for golf courses that lead the way in terms of chemical reduction there are many limitations and difficulties. Some courses are making great sides, with recycling systems, minimum or no chemical use and alternative bio inputs. In BOX – 1 & 2 such examples are given which are typical.

Introduction

The deterioration of interior air quality brought on by dangerous chemicals and other factors is known as indoor air pollution, which can be up to 10 times worse than outside air pollution. This is due to the fact that confined spaces foster the buildup of potential pollutants more than do open spaces. In underdeveloped countries, statistics show that indoor air pollution has a far worse effect on health than outside air pollution. Indoor air pollution can be defined as ‘ the totality of attributes of indoor air that affects a person’s health and well-being’ ( Singh & Jamal, 2012). Indoor air pollution from solid fuels was to blame for 3.5 million fatalities, 16% of particulate matter pollution, and 4.5% of global daily-adjusted life years in 2010. (DALY).

SUMMARY

Conventional agriculture has been contributing significantly to several modern day environmental problems like global climate change, soil degradation, water pollution, biodiversity loss etc. directly or indirectly. Organic agriculture has been identified as one of the eco-friendly agriculture techniques and is being promoted worldwide to meet the increasing demand for organic products and conserve the natural eco-systems. It helps mitigating climate change through reduced emission of green house gases (GHGs), greater C sequestration and less use of fossil fuel. Besides, it has been found helpful to reduce export of harmful agro-chemicals to water bodies, biodiversity conservation, restoring soil health etc. Organic agriculture can help to meet the objectives of sustainable and eco-friendly agriculture.

Abstract

For thousands of years, plants have provided medicine to human and animals. People still depend on plants for food and shelter. The present surveys and investigation covers Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary, Kathua District (J&K) situated in Southeastern parts of Asia (India). This communication mainly focused on ten high value plant species belonging to eight families of medicinal value being used to cure different types of ailment growing in Jasrota Wildlife Sanctuary and surrounding areas of Kathua district. These species are Aerva sanguinolenta (L.) Blume, Centella asiatica L. (Urb.) Fl., Cissampelos pareira L., Colebrookea oppositifolia Sm., Cryptolepis dubia M.R.Almeida, Holarrhena pubescens Wall. ex G.Don, Justicia adhatoda L., Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers ex Hook.f. & Thomson, Vitex negundo L. and Woodfordia fruticosa (L.) Kurz. It also deal with morphological enumeration, ecology and habitat, ethnobotanical uses and active chemical constituent present in studied plant species.

Horticultural crops play an important role in Indian agricultural economy. Though only 2.4% of cultivated area is under these crops, they contribute about 21% to the Agricultural GDP. Though horticultural crops contribute more for the national economy, its contribution could be further increased by minimizing 30% loss of horticultural crops due to pests and diseases. Continuous and unrestricted use have dictated the need for development of ecologically safer pest management technologies. Among the non-chemical methods, resistant varieties, cultural practices, plant derivatives and biocontrol agents are important and these methods can be integrated successfully. In recent years, interest among regulatory authorities, agricultural advisors and growers has forced to seek for alternative solution of plant disease management. It has encouraged intensive research of microbial products as agents for plant disease management. This resulted in commercialization of a number of microbial biocontrol products.

Pineapple is an important tropical fruit crop of India introduced by Portuguese from Southern Brazil early in the 16th century. It is a versatile fruit acting as a rich source of nutrients in many favourite recipes. In addition, it is an excellent source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants,highlighting its role as anti-inflammatory, digestion, and immunity support.It resembles epiphytes where roots are sensitive to poor soil aeration (Joy and Sindhu, 2012). In the present day, the demand for pineapple is increasing gradually in different parts of the country. However, insect-pests infestation turns out to be one of the major impediments in its quantum of production.

Pineapple is infested by several insect pests like mealy bug, scale insect, thrips, fruit borer, white grubs, bud moths, midges, fruit flies, termites etc. during its entire crop duration. However, Mealy bugs appeared as the key pest of pineapple while otherslike scale insects, thrips and fruit borer could cause economic damage to the crop only under favourable environment. Therefore, emphasis must be given for development of suitableecofriendly management techniques by proper prophylactic (cultural, mechanical, biological etc.) and protective measures to reduce the insect-pest population below the economic damage through proper monitoring and regular survey of the crop field.Thus, this chapter emphasizes on the important insect-pests infesting Pineapple along with their appropriate management options.

Natural farming provides a holistic, sustainable approach to agriculture that aligns with natural processes while offering significant ecological and economic benefits, especially within the Indian agricultural landscape.
Natural farming rejuvenates soil health by eliminating synthetic fertilizers and pesticides. Instead, it relies on inputs like desi cow dung and urine, mulching, and fermented bio-concoctions such as Jeevamrit. These inputs enhance soil organic matter, improve microbial diversity, and support natural nutrient cycles. As a result, soils under natural farming retain water better, allow for proper aeration, and are more fertile and resilient to climate-induced stressors like drought and floods.
The practice also promotes biodiversity. Without chemical runoff, ecosystems support pollinators, birds, and beneficial insects. Techniques such as intercropping, trap cropping, and the use of native seeds further balance the agro-ecosystem, naturally controlling pests and fostering long-term ecological harmony.
Economically, natural farming significantly lowers input costs. Farmers avoid purchasing costly synthetic chemicals and genetically modified seeds, instead utilizing affordable, farm-made formulations like Neemastra and plant-based repellents. This reduces market dependency and increases self-sufficiency.
States such as Andhra Pradesh and Himachal Pradesh have seen positive economic shifts where natural farmers report reduced debt levels and improved net incomes, Although yields may be marginally lower, the drastic reduction in input costs ensures better profitability.

Indian rivers are characterized by diverse hydrological and geomorphological features essential to their ecological integrity. These rivers can be classified into perennial and seasonal categories, with the former, such as the Ganges and Brahmaputra, maintaining continuous flow due to snowmelt and rainfall. In contrast, seasonal rivers exhibit significant fluctuations in water levels, particularly during the monsoon. The interplay of hydrological dynamics facilitates sediment transport, influencing the physical characteristics of riverbanks and floodplains. Geomorphologically, rivers from the Himalayas typically display steep gradients, leading to deep gorges and distinct aquatic habitats, while those flowing through plains develop wider, meandering channels. Anthropogenic activities, including dam construction and urbanization, have profoundly impacted these hydrological and geomorphological processes, resulting in habitat degradation and alterations in water quality. Understanding these features is crucial for effectively conserving and managing India's river ecosystems, which are vital for supporting biodiversity and human livelihoods.

In order for a plant to become diseased, three conditions must be present: (1) a pathogen, (2) a favorable environment and (3) a susceptible host. All the strategies we use to manage plant diseases work to remove or limit one of these factors, thus breaking the plant disease triangle. The key to sustainable plant disease management is to establish an agro- ecological system that is favorable to plant growth and development at the population level and adverse to pathogen evolution and epidemic development based on interactions among plants, pathogens, vectors and environment.

Introduction

Advent of agriculture in India dates back to around 2000 BC, the period of Indus Valley Civilization. South and East Asia also witnessed the start of agriculture around the same time. The crops were grown only during the monsoons. Winters served as a closed period for crops as well as for the pests. Even at that time a number of insect pests were known to cause serious damage to different crops. Agriculture has been revolutionized during the few decades since World War II (Kupatt et al., 2005). Introduction of high yielding varieties and associated technology resulted in tremendous increase in the production from the same piece of land. The results of these changes include a dramatic reduction in time and resources needed to provide an unprecedented quantity of quality food and fiber. The initial introduction of plant protection agents as wonder material did not lasted long, as very soon their ill effects on human health and environment were witnessed.

Abstract

Traditional practices of restoring and vegetating mine spoils, which include mechanical tillage, the addition of tons of organic and mineral inputs, seeding of herbaceous plants, and regular fertilization, are often expensive and not sustainable on the long term in the Canadian boreal forest biome. Phytobial restoration and remediation may be an excellent alternative to these traditional practices while accelerating ecosystem reconstruction and sustainable reforestation of mined sites. In this review, the role and importance of root symbionts – ectomycorrhizal fungi, PGPR, and Frankia – on boreal tree fitness are discussed. Furthermore, highlights of recent research studies done by our team in Canada on ecological restoration and bioremediation of boreal mined sites are presented.

As key components of intricate food webs, fish help control prey populations and uphold ecosystem stability. Their movements facilitate the distribution of nutrients throughout river systems, which supports primary productivity and enhances the connections between freshwater, estuarine, and marine environments. Moreover, fish serve as bio-indicators, signaling changes in water quality and habitat health due to pollution and environmental stress. This chapter explores the various roles fish play in preserving river biodiversity and ecological stability, with a focus on the impacts of human-induced challenges like overfishing, habitat destruction, and pollution. It emphasizes the critical need for effective conservation and management strategies to safeguard fish populations and their habitats, ultimately supporting the resilience and functionality of river systems.

1. Introduction

If we want to know what kind of plants and animals are in a particular habitat, and how many they are of each species, it is obviously (usually) impossible to go and count each and every one present. It would be like trying to count different sizes and colors of grains of sand on the beach. This problem is usually solved by taking a number of samples from around the habitat, making the necessary assumption that these samples are representative of the habitat in general. In order to be reasonably sure that the results from the samples do represent the habitat as closely as possible, careful planning beforehand is essential.

The usual sampling unit is a quadrat. Quadrats normally consist of a square frame, the most frequently used size being 20×20 m² for trees, 5×5 m² for shrubs, 1×1 m² for herbs. The purpose of using a quadrat is to enable comparable samples to be obtained from areas of consistent size and shape. Rectangular quadrats and even circular quadrats have been used in some surveys. It does not really matter what shape of quadrat is used, provided it is a standard sampling unit and its shape and measurements are stated in any write-up. It may however be better to stick to the traditional square frame unless there are very good reasons, because this yields data that are more readily comparable to other published research. (For instance, you cannot compare data obtained using a circular quadrat, with data obtained using a square quadrat. The difference in shape of the sampling units will introduce variations in the results obtained.)

Vegetables not only provide nutritional security but also income security to small and marginal land holders growing vegetables in the hinterlands of urban markets and dollar earners in global markets. India is endowed with favorable tropical, subtropical and temperate climate making it conducive for producing high quality vegetables round the year in one or other part of the county. As far as production is concerned, India is in number two in the world after China. But, as a matter of fact, in terms of productivity and subsequently for per capita availability, we are still lagging behind many countries of the world. Per capita availability of vegetables is 210-gm/capita/day against 300 gm/capita/day recommended by ICMR. There is urgent need to increase the productivity of vegetables in our country to feed the increasing population.

Reservoirs constitute the prime inland fishery resource in the country by virtue of their numerous production potential. These man-made ecosystems offer enough scope for stock manipulation through ecological maneuvering, paving the way for production hikes at a relatively low-capital investment. Coral reefs are fragile and most diverse and valuable ecosystems on earth. The stony corals are formed from the tiny, soft colonial organisms called polyps. They provide enormous ecological, economic services, and cultural value to hundreds of millions of people. They are significantly contributing to the nutrition, economic security and protection from natural disasters. They are often termed as the rain forests of the sea.

Coral reefs were first appeared 485 million years ago during the early Ordovician period. They belong to the class Anthozoa of animal phylum Cnidaria, which includes sea anemones and jelly fish. Coral reef is an under water ecosystem which is characterized by reef-building corals. Unlike sea anemones, colonies of coral polyps secrete a hard exoskeletons called reef which is made up of calcium carbonate to support and protect the corals. These reefs grow best in warm, shallow, clear, sunny and agitated water.

BIODIVERSITY

The term biodiversity was coined by Walter G. Rosen in the year 1985. Biodiversity refers to the variation among living organisms that can be found in a particular area such as terrestrial, marine and desert ecosystems and the ecological complexes to which they are a part. The study of biodiversity helps to understand the ecological stability, economic and ethical importance. Coral reefs are believed to have the highest biodiversity on the planet even more than a tropical rainforest. Though the coral reefs distributed in less than one percent of the ocean floor, they provide habitat for more than 25% marine life with more than 4,000 world’s fishes. They act as protective nurseries to many fish species, and shelter small fishes to grow. Coral reefs diversity is so rich that we do not have a firm count on all the species that live within it and every year discover new species.” There are about six thousand coral species in the world, in which few are growing in warm shallow waters near coastlines while others in the dark, cold seafloor of the open ocean.

22.1  Introduction

Plant pests have been part of man’s environment for a long time. Traditional agriculture, which included diverse crops and indigenous crop management practices, provided little opportunity for pests to build up and spread rapidly (Smith and Allen, 1954). Crop production is constantly threatened by increasing difficulties in controlling insect pests, which are a major impediment to improved livelihoods of poor farmers. However, in the quest to increase food production for the growing population, use of pesticides became a norm in crop management. Pesticides became an integral part of the process owing to losses from weeds, diseases and pests reducing the harvestable produce. Use of pesticides along with high yielding varieties, irrigation and improved seed did result in increased productivity. But the rampant use of these chemicals, under the adage, ‘if little is good, a lot more will be better’ has played havoc with human and other life forms.

Ecology is the inter-relationship between organisms and their environment. Weed ecology is study of inter-relationship between weed and their environmneent. Simply, Ecology of weeds means the inter-relationship of weeds with climate, soil, crops and other biotic factors. Terrestrial weed species persist in the soil by virtue of dormant structures, typically seeds or vegetative perennating organs such as rhizomes, tubers and taproots. In dense infestations, the banks of seeds or underground meristems from which new plants may be recruited into adult populations can be exceptionally large. Rao (1968) estimated that in Cyperus rotundus L. tuber populations of 10 million per hectare were possible, whilst Soerjani (1970) calculated that Imperata cylindrica may annually produce six tones of rhizomes per hectare. Typically seed banks of annual weeds in arable soils contain from 1000-10,000 seeds per m2whilst in grassland the upper limit to this range may extend at least to 1 million per m² (Mortimer 1994).

Introduction

Aquaculture resources in India is vast in the form of ponds and tanks of 2.35 million ha, reservoirs of 3.15 million ha, oxbow lakes and derelict waters of 1.3 million ha and brakishwaters of 1.24 million ha. At present, the total fish production is 6.4 mmt. Out of which inland fish production is 3.4 mmt. The total aquaculture production of 2.47 million tonnes that constitutes 4.2% of global production was valued at US$ 2.9 billion (FAO, 2006). Economics of solar energy devices can be calculated through life cycle cost (LCC) analysis. Total life cycle cost of a device is comprised of capital cost, maintenance cost, replacement costs for damagaed components and operational cost. Before adding these above costs, all future costs (C) are converted to present worth considering the relative rate of inflation (i) and discount rate (d).

Where, PW is the present worth of any future cost, i is the relative rate of inflation and d is the discount rate per year and n is the time period in years. Relative rate of inflation accounts for the escalted increase or decrease in prices of a commodity in comparison to general inflation rate. For any commodity, if the price escalation is expected as per the general inflation rate then relative rate of inflation is considered zero. In general case, relative rate of inflation is considered zero. Discount rate accounts the real value of money in future and in most of the economies of the world it is about 8-12%, and therefore 10% is considered in most analyis. The discount rate also refers to the interest rate used in discounted cash flow (DCF) analysis to determine the present value of future cash flows. The discount rate in DCF analysis takes into account not just the time value of money, but also the risk or uncertainty of future cash flows; the greater the uncertainty of future cash flows, the higher the discount rate. A discount rate of 10 % per year would mean that in real terms it makes no difference to a farmer whether he has ? 100 now or ? 110 in one year’s time. Conversely, a cost of ? 110 one year from now has a present worth of ? 100. For a future single cost in n^th year, the present worth of that cost is calculated using Eq (1). However, for future multiple payments, costs are to be converted to present worth for each year and then needs to be cumulated. Abstract

Himachal Pradesh is spread over the altitudinal range varying from 352-6975 m amsl. Horticulture in upper reaches and cereals in valley areas form the major components of land use. Temperate fruits amongst the different fruits grown in the state occupy a major share  with respect to area (68%) and production (90%). About 92 per cent of the total geographical area of the state is directly and indirectly influenced by fruits farming through changes in socio-economic structure. This paper has been prepared to highlight the socio-economic issues, technological issues, growth in the states economy and efficiency of the social indicators. This study shows that majority of the total population (80%) in the state has been affected positively by the apple farming business. The role of women has been considered equally important due to strong interaction between orchard and household management activities majority of the orchardists have been found to be marginal and small covering about 47.1per cent of the total area. Amongst all the temperate fruits grown, apple growers enjoy comparatively a better performance with respect to socio- economic indicators. A tremendous increase in area and production under apple has been found during the previous years.

Weed Management

The productivity of crops much depends on intercultural and weeding operation. The efficient management practices ultimately increases the yield level. The productivity is much dependent on various attributes starting from the variety, climate including human resource management and other factors known well to the farmers. It is estimated that nearly 30-50 per cent of the crop is lost due to weed menace in the agricultural fields. The farmers use various methods of weed control like cultural, mechanical, chemical and manual means. Encompassing all these control measures is known as integrated weed management.

Abstract

The temperate fruits have shown a remarkable progress as about 68 per cent of the total area under fruits and about 91 per cent of the total production of the fruits in the State is contributed by these fruits. The economic analysis of secondary data shows the increasing trend of area under fruits, vegetables as well as production of these crops in the State over a period of time.  Although maximum increase has been found during the last about 5 decades in case of fruits (about 236 times) yet production of vegetables has shown an increase of about 83 per cent  during the last about ½ decade. Similarly flower crops cultivation has also been increasing in the State which has been clear from the increasing number of flowers growing cooperative societies (48 in no.) in the State along with area  (129 ha) under different flower crops (Anon., 2004-05). More emphasis has been laid on diversification of crops so as to make proper use of limited land and other critical inputs. Economic analysis of primary data has shown benefit-cost ratios of fruits, vegetables and flower crops almost in the same range, i.e. maximum Rs. 4.50:1 to minimum 1.53:1, so with meager holding size, vegetable crops and floriculture have been found to be the best option of diversifying crops along with fruits growing so as to reap better remuneration from use of scarce resources.
