Introduction
The science of epigenomics has emerged as a key area of research across numerous biological disciplines. Epigenomics is the analysis of epigenetic changes occuring across many genes in a cell or entire organism, whereas the concept of epigenetics focuses on processes that regulate how and when certain genes are turned on and turned off. Understanding on the science of epigenetics can be traced back to the early hypothesis proposed by Aristotle to disprove the theory of preformation. Waddington’s initial conceptualization of epigenetics as a “conceptual tool” to integrate genetics and embryology established a foundational framework for subsequent research. Over time, advancements in molecular biology, developmental biology and evolutionary biology have since profoundly expanded and refined our understanding of epigenetics. Waddington further progressed in the 20th century with his introduction of the “Epigenetic Landscape” model (Baedke, 2013), marking a crucial milestone in the evolution of epigenetic theory.
In modern times, epigenetics refers to the study of heritable changes in gene expression or cellular phenotype that do not involve alterations to the underlying DNA sequence. Recent genetic and biochemical research has improved the understanding of various epigenetic regulation by three mechanisms including DNA methylation, histone modifications and non-coding RNA regulations. These mechanisms induce changes in chromatin conformation (active-open or repressiveclosed), which influences the gene expression that results in gene activation or gene silencing (Fig.1).
The transition between open and closed chromatin states, along with interactions among various epigenetic mechanisms, is essential to maintain optimal cellular function in diverse cell types, tissues and in response to varying developmental or environmental stimuli (Allis and Jenuwein, 2016).
Extensive studies in Arabidopsis led to a profound understanding of epigenetic mechanisms in plant growth and development. Later, intensive investigations was

Detailed understanding of the gene structure and functions are achieved in respect of the genes present in the nuclear genome. The knowledge of the gene functions is being applied in plant genetics and plant breeding. The different kinds of genetic variants are well captured and explained in crop improvement programmes. The organelle genomes, namely, chloroplast and mitochondria that are present outside the nucleus have not received much attention to understand this organization, structure, functions and in utilizing their genetic endowments in many of the plant development and functions. The organelle genomes present in the cytoplasm are providing cytoplasmic effect, cytonuclear and inter genome interactions that impact plant development, plant fertility and agronomic traits expression. It is estimated that 80% of the metabolites are affected by the variations in organelle genomes. The organelle genome also influences and regulates the activity of nuclear genes. The The chloroplast genome encodes proteins that are central to plant photosynthetic activity for plant photosynthesis producing sugar and mitochondria genomes as the energy powerhouse for the cells and they are very essential to provide support to the plant functions and biomass production that is converted to the crop yield. Together, the organelle genomes have disproportionate effects on the nuclear gene functions.
These two organelle genomes that exist outside the nuclear genomes, active in synthesizing food and energy for cell functions, are not as much considered and relied upon by the plant breeders although they are basic biological machineries. This chapter on the organelle genomes is designed to present the structure and genetic endowments and functioning of the chloroplast and mitochondrial

Currently, about 350,000 species of flowering plants have been described under global flora, but only a few of them have been rigorously screened for plant breeding parameters and systematic research accomplished in terms of varietal development. According to the Great Medical Encyclopaedia, medicinal plants are those used as a source of raw material for preparation of medicinal products of natural origin. Medicinal and aromatic plants occupy a pivotal position in the socio cultural, health care and spiritual arena of rural people of India. Medicinal plants contribute significantly to the rural livelihoods for their sustenance and income generation. Medicinal and aromatic plants are being used since ancient time for the treatment of many diseases in traditional and recognized systems of healthcare and for therapeutic, fragrance and flavoring products in pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries besides as sources of natural dye, fat, essential oil, biopesticide, resin, protein, vitamin, condiment, spice, timber, fiber and other useful substances. Medicinal and aromatic plants-based livelihood systems are often mediated by the market forces and/ related directly to employment and income of the poor people.
Based on the research work carried out by International Development Research Centre (IDRC) in South Asia, MAP and other biodiversity-based livelihoods can not only become poverty alleviating but also been made socially equitable and gender balanced. According to the World Health Organization, 80% of people from developing countries depend mainly on traditional medicine for primary health care. India is one of the worlds’ richest sources of medicinal plants comprising of nearly 45,000 species, of which nearly 100 species find major commercial use as per the statistics of National Medicinal Plant Board, New Delhi. In 2017, the estimated global market value of herbal medicine and herbal supplements was in the region of $107 billion (Yao et al, 2019), and not surprisingly, the substantial demand and consumption of these products have resulted in shortages, and in some cases even the exhaustion, of several medicinal plant resources, leading to habitat destruction and the loss of genetic diversity.
Plant secondary metabolites specific to each medicinal herb are derived from the precursors obtained from the primary metabolic processes related to one plant species or related group of species. These metabolites protect plants against plants being eaten by herbivores or being infected by microbial pathogens. They serve as attractants for pollinators and as agents of plant-plant competition and plant microbe symbioses. The rise of chemical taxa of medicinal and aromatic plants can be considered as consequence of biochemical and metabolic processes mostly under genetic control. It is assumed that differentiation of cell is mostly manifested in chemo-differentiation at a molecular level and the fundamental differences of protein present in an organism, between different enzyme systems. Moreover, the identity of a medicinal plant is attributed to the dissimilarities in their metabolic profiling intra specific chemical adaptations influenced by the ecological and geographical conditions. This discrete chemical difference is known as poly chemism that occur in autogamous species like medicinal and aromatic plants

The 2022 edition of the United Nation’s global forest sector outlook for 2050 presented an update on the current patterns of wood consumption, its rising tendency, and projected future demand of primary processed wood to total 3.1 billion cubic meters of round wood equivalents (FAO, 2022). In addition, up to 199 million m³ would be required to substitute for non-renewable materials. Planted forests contributed around 46 percent to the global industrial round wood supply in 2020. However, globally the supply of wood from planted forests is always lower than the actual demand. Increasing population, urbanisation, economic development and consumption pattern are some of the major driving causes behind the demand in growth of wood and wood products. Wood security is defined as long-term availability of wood and wood products (sawn wood, veneer, plywood, particleboard, pulp, wood fuel and other primary wood products) for domestic and industrial requirements. The deficiency in the wood supply chain will continue to increase, and when the world population touches 9.4 to 10.2 billion, a 22 to 34% increase, the demand-supply imbalance will also increase. This supply gap would result in a shift in consumption patterns and lead to increase in environmentally harmful products such as petroleum-based plastics. Hence to meet the basic wood demand in 2050, at world level an additional 33 million ha of highly productive plantation forest would need to be established to meet the industrial round wood demand (FAO, 2022).
New demands for forest ecosystem continue to surge based on the Sustainable Development Goals, and mitigation of climate change related issues, water and other goods and services. Along with policy measures to directly act on existing forest resources conservation, increase in tree plantations with management interventions to increase productivity is necessary to fulfil the wood supply demands (McMaho and Jackson, 2019). Globally, the area under plantation forestry is on the rise (McEwan et al. 2020). Numerous studies (Silva et al. 2019; Carle et al. 2020; Pinnschmidt et al. 2023), highlight that plantation forests increasingly fulfil the ecological services provided by natural forests. Particularly, short rotation exotic trees with high productivity have found a niche in high-intensity industrial plantations, driving the expansion of the pulp and paper industry into a

Introduction
Based on the mode of reproduction, plants are broadly classified into sexually propagated and asexually propagated crops and some of the agricultural crops and a large number of horticultural crops are asexually propagated. The most important asexually propagated crops cultivated on a global basis are potato (Solanum tuberosum), cassava (Manihot esculenta), sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas), sugarcane (Saccharum spp), yam (Dioscorea spp.), taro (Colocasia esculenta), banana (Musa paradisiaca), etc. In sexually propagated crops, seeds are the primary propagules and it is produced by the fertilization of male and female gametes. Whereas, asexual reproduction or clonal reproduction covers all those modes of multiplication of plants where normal gamete formation and fertilization do not take place and vegetative propagules are the means of reproduction. Since sexual reproduction involves meiosis, segregation and recombination, the creation of variation is a continuous process which is inevitable in these crops. On the other hand, in asexual propagation, progenies are identical to the parent clones and they are genetically similar without any variation and they reproduce via mitosis.
Characteristics of asexually propagated crops
• Majority of the asexually propagated crops are perennials, e.g., sugarcane, fruit trees, etc. The annual crops are mostly tuber crops, e.g., potato, cassava, sweet potato, etc.
• Many of these crops show reduced flowering and seed set, and some varieties of these crops do not flower at all. But many of these crops flower regularly and show satisfactory seed set.
• They are invariably cross-pollinated and highly heterozygous and show severe inbreeding depression.
• A vast majority of asexually propagated crops are either polyploids. eg., sugarcane, potato, sweet potato, etc., or have polyploid species or varieties.
• Many cultivated crops are interspecific hybrids, ex., banana, sugarcane, etc.
• These crops consist of a large number of clones, that is, progeny derived from a single plant through asexual reproduction. Thus, each variety of an asexually propagated crop is a clone.

Introduction
The most extensive diversity is found in the realms of plants and insects, encompassing over 1 million arthropod taxa, primarily comprising insects, which have been comprehensively described, along with more than 350,000 plant taxa. Notably, a substantial portion of the described insect species serve as either pollinators or herbivores. Over millions of years, insects and plants have coevolved, constantly adjusting and adapting to each other’s characteristics. Plants have developed numerous morphological and biochemical features to withstand damage from insects, while in response, insects have evolved a range of defensive and adaptive mechanisms. These mechanisms include behavioural, morphological, physiological, biochemical, and genetic traits, enabling them to either tolerate or adapt to the defensive traits of plants (Schmelz et al., 2006; Wu et al., 2007; Howe & Jander, 2008; War et al., 2018). Plant defenses against insect pests can be broadly categorized into two main types: antibiosis and antixenosis resistance. Antibiosis involves the direct impact of plant defensive traits on insect growth, development, and survival. In contrast, antixenosis defense relies on morphological or chemical factors that alter insect behaviour, deterring them from feeding and laying eggs on the plant. The trichomes, spines, cuticles, thorns, and lignified cell walls, are the morphological traits of defense that directly protect plants from insect pests. The biochemical defense mechanisms are typically activated in response to insect attacks and are characterized by their dynamic nature (War et al., 2018). Plant volatiles serve a significant function in the indirect defense of plants against insect herbivores. They accomplish this by either deterring the insect pests or by luring the pests’ natural adversaries. Among the various attributes associated with plant defense, chemical barriers, whether they are induced by stress or present constitutively, along with the nutritional composition of the plant, are regarded as particularly crucial for impeding insect growth and development (Peters & Constabel, 2002; War et al., 2019).
Chemical resistance entails the production of secondary metabolites, whether inherently present (constitutive) or induced as a response to a threat, to fortify the plant’s defense mechanisms (Figure 1). Constitutive defense metabolites, initially stored in an inactive state, referred to as phytoanticipins, become activated when herbivores attack. This activation is facilitated by the enzyme ß-glucosidase, which subsequently triggers the release of various aglycone metabolites possessing biocidal properties (Morant et al., 2008). Metabolites that are induced in response to herbivore activity are referred to as phytoalexins. These compounds encompass a variety of substances such as isoflavonoids, terpenoids, alkaloids, and more. They are recognized for their capacity to influence the growth and viability of herbivorous organisms (Walling, 2000). Furthermore, a notable role in imparting host-plant

Loss of arable land due to population expansion, urbanization and climate change have substantially impacted agricultural production, driving the need to exploit advanced techniques for enhancing sustainable crop production (Bren d’Amour et al. 2017). The yield and productivity of plants are influenced by both their genotype and the growing environment, which govern the performance indices or phenotype (Reynolds et al. 2020). Conventional plant breeding plays a crucial role in ensuring food and nutritional security for the ever-growing global population by harnessing genetic diversity and selecting plants with superior agronomic traits (Singh et al. 2019). However, identifying plants with superior agronomic traits and novel genes (quantitative trait loci or QTLs) through conventional breeding is akin to finding a needle in a haystack (Bohra et al. 2022). Furthermore, the conventional breeding approach is time-consuming and often associated with linkage drag due to extensive inter-crossing/hybridization among elite, wild, and common landraces (Beaver and Osorno 2009). Despite these challenges, classical breeding does develop new plant varieties with improved traits that can withstand climate extremes. Nevertheless, the duration of breeding cycles required to successfully complete the breeding program remains a major bottleneck, taking around 7-9 years to develop an improved variety (Pratap et al 2021).
Efforts have been made to revamp conventional breeding techniques by exploiting molecular markers (Ribaut et al. 2010). These markers effectively capture genetic variations across large populations at an early plant developmental stage. Additionally, the use of molecular markers in plant breeding significantly reduces the time required to screen plant genotypes with desired traits. Otherwise, achieving this task would take 2-3 years (Amiteye et al. 2021). Molecular marker-based techniques, such as marker-assisted selection (MAS), markertrait association (MTA), and genome- wide association studies (GWAS), have become routine tools. They help predict and develop genetic models for plants containing desired traits (Bohra et al. 2020). Furthermore, plant breeders have successfully integrated these molecular markers with genomics, phenomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and epigenomics approaches (Malik

The integration of bioinformatics into plant breeding has been shaped by several key milestones over the past few decades. Concepts like Breeding 4.0 (Wallace et al.,2018) and, 5G Breeding (Varshney et al., 2020) have gained global prominence, strengthened by the availability of extensive omics data. The advent of DNA sequencing technologies marked a key milestone in this field, catalyzing numerous genome sequencing projects worldwide such as Arabidopsis, rice, tomato, maize, wheat, etc. Next-generation sequencing (NGS) platforms, such as Illumina, PacBio, and Oxford Nanopore, have enabled rapid sequencing of entire plant genomes, facilitating the identification of genetic variations, including single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), insertions, deletions, and structural variants (Deschamps & Campbell, 2010; Fuentes-Pardo et al.,2017). These advancements have significantly improved comparative genomics, enabling researchers to compare the genetic makeup of different plant species or varieties and identify genes associated with agronomic traits, such as yield, disease resistance, and environmental stress tolerance (Khan et al., 2024). As a result, these developments have revolutionized plant genetic research and crop improvement strategies, providing unprecedented opportunities to enhance agricultural productivity (Bellare et al., 2018; Shendure and Ji, 2008).
Bioinformatics has revolutionized plant biology by combining computational and statistical tools to analyze genomes, transcriptomes, proteomes, and metabolomes facilitating insights into genome structure, function, and evolution (Yadav et al., 2015; Saha et al., 2023; Roychowdhury et al., 2023). Genomics, emerged in the 1980s primarily focussing on mapping and sequencing genomes and there after laid the groundwork for functional genomics, which systematically explored gene functions (Hieter and Boguski, 1997; (Jackson et al., 2011). Further, advances in sequencing technologies, such as long-read platforms, have enabled detailed analyses of structural variants in crop genomes, crucial for identifying agronomic traits.
The large volumes of genomic sequence data have allowed researchers to identify genetic markers for crop improvement and candidate genes for trait development. However, the full potential of these genomic sequencing efforts depends on assigning functions to the thousands of genes with unknown roles. Model organisms such as humans, mice, Arabidopsis, rice, tomato, Medicago, and wheat have been instrumental in advancing genomic investigations (Bult, 2006). A notable example is the model organism Arabidopsis thaliana, which has provided a foundation for exploring fundamental biological phenomena using resources such as the TAIR database (Lamesch et al., 2012). Leveraging advanced bioinformatics techniques, researchers have enhanced crop productivity, mitigated diseases, and optimized resource management in agriculture. Advanced approaches like genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and transcriptome analysis continue to refine the understanding of genetic underpinnings, revolutionizing modern agricultural strategies (Mai et al., 2023).

Introduction
Crop breeding programmes are under increasing pressure for developing cultivars that possess the ability to adapt to diverse environments while maintaining higher quality and quantity, in response to the escalating worldwide demand for food. The primary goal of plant or crop breeding is to attain genetic enhancement, leading to the creation of new varieties that demonstrate higher yield and superior quality. Hence, the central aim of crop breeding initiatives is to develop novel cultivars that demonstrate improved resistance against fungal, bacterial, insect, or viral pathogens, alongside increased tolerance to abiotic stresses such as drought low temperature, salinity, dehydration, and heavy metal toxicity. Additionally these breeding efforts aim to improve quality attributes, including taste, size shape, colour, and cooking convenience (Lenaerts et al., 2019). The ability to anticipate emergent phenotypes resulting from genetic or environmental disruptions necessitates the utilization of methodologies capable of identifying metabolic pathways or canopy structures suitable for change. The insilico tools have the potential to guide breeding endeavours aimed at developing novel germplasm that exhibits robust adaptation to diverse environmental conditions. The precise simulation of organisms in a computational environment is a current and effective approach to enhance prediction abilities. Significant progress has been made in the field of predictive medicine through the implementation of community projects that utilize integrative, multi-scale modeling techniques. However, there are a lot of crop models that are just geographically and temporally restricted, which limits their ability to go beyond the data that is now available and, consequently, leads to insufficient forecasts regarding crop reactions in novel circumstances. The plant community has launched or continued a coordinated endeavour focused on the development of a virtual plant modelling through consolidative and multi-scale mapping, models and simulations (Marshall-Colon et al., 2017).

Introduction
Recent scientific findings highlight the escalating threats to global agricultural production due to climate change. The surge in extreme weather events, amplified by erratic precipitation patterns, alongside diminishing soil fertility and declining plant productivity, has led to an upsurge in disease and pest pressures. This amalgamation of factors has propelled a distressing trend of crop failures on a global scale. Over the last century, the average global temperature has already risen by 0.74°C, and projections suggest this rise could accelerate dramatically, reaching an alarming 2.6–4.8°C by the close of this century. This impending temperature escalation from climate change endangers agricultural output, thereby posing a signifi cant risk to the world’s food security. Presently, a staggering 794.6 million individuals face undernourishment, with nutrition-related issues contributing to a staggering 45% of deaths in children under fi ve years of age. The situation is particularly dire in developing regions, where 779.9 million people grapple with undernourishment. The repercussions of reduced agricultural production extend beyond hunger; they encompass potential food shortages and infl ationary pressures, predominantly affecting populations in low-income regions. These adverse consequences underscore the imperative of addressing these challenges. While advancements in crop breeding have led to incremental genetic gains in major agricultural crops, the pace of progress remains inadequate to meet the mounting global food demands. It is evident that enhancing the rate of genetic gain through innovative breeding programs is vital. This endeavor holds the potential to expedite the development of crop varieties resilient to changing climates and endowed with higher nutrient densities. Such cultivars are essential for ensuring sustainable food production and bolstering food security for our burgeoning population.

1.1. Introduction
The terms ‘counselling’ and ‘health promotion’ complement each other when it becomes a matter of an individual’s health. Health promotion is a part of behavioural social science that aims to change the systemic strategies adopted by the individual or group or by the mass community for the betterment of their health which can be achieved by talk therapy known as counselling. In the 21st century, from childhood to adulthood, all people are in a ‘rat race’ for their careers and necessities, which is one of the main reasons for stress generation. Not only that, chemical substances consumed by different food ingredients as food additives, preservatives, etc. but also induce oxidative stress and damage the functional activity of cells, tissues, organs, and systems. This ‘stress’ is a major culprit not only for the deterioration of physical health but also psychological health. Such stress imposition in daily life impairs normal physiological functions, skills, performance, and productivity. Unhealthy food, life, and work styles are also linked to the onset of pathophysiological complications that counselling and health promotion are required to overcome. Besides this, for sportsmen, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and growing children, nutritional counselling and health promotion are indisputable. For disease prevention and early recovery from disease, dietary counselling plays an immense role.
1.2. Counselling
Counselling is an intermittent, interpersonal interviewing process where the counsellor gives advice or suggestions to the client but never gives any direction. Counsellors assist the client in thinking, analysing, and acting to improve their insight power. The counsellor focuses on both the positive and negative sides of a particular event and allows the client to think and rethink its acceptability and unacceptability.

2.1. Introduction
The present century is the century of oxidative stress (OS) that linked to several life-threatening disorders which predominantly affect public health as well as their nutritional status. Unhealthy lifestyle and eating pattern which is major concern for OS. The biological literature first used the phrase “oxidative stress (OS)” in 1970. OS can be defined as a state of imbalance condition between the high level of pro-oxidants and the low level of antioxidant scavenging capacity in the body. The normal oxidative process that occurs in cells is crucial for the existence of life and favours the death of a cell. Free radicals, which are unstable, can form when molecular oxygen breaks up into pairs. This unstable radical has a high level of reactivity and produces reactive molecular species like reactive oxygen species (ROS) and reactive nitrogen species (RNS). To resist the OS and to maintain the redox balance, cells have an inbuilt antioxidant defence capacity, comprising of superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), and glutathione peroxidase (GPOD) etc. But some pathogenic or environmental conditions may overpower this antioxidant defence system, allowing a portion of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) to bypass degradation and create much more reactive radicals. Increased ROS and RNS affect redox balance and damage DNA, proteins, amino acids, and fats, causing alteration of structures as well as action of cells and tissues. This will ultimately produce several pathogenetic elements associated with clinical situations and leads to the development of human aging and numerous diseases. Several dietary components such as whole grains, nuts, fruits, and vegetables are excellent sources of antioxidative vitamins, minerals, nutraceuticals or phytoceuticals that shields the human body from the harmful oxidative injury by scavenging or destruction of free radicals and also by upregulation of endogenous antioxidant defence system. Thereby long-term and sustainable OS remedies can be performed.

3.1. Introduction
Sports nutrition is one of the areas of nutrition that closely coordinates with human anatomy research and the science of sports. The application of nutrition science to a practical daily eating plan intended to optimise the performance of athletes in competitive events, speed up the healing and reconstruction process following intense physical activity, and supply the energy for physical activity is known as sports nutrition. It also seeks to promote wellness and general health. Nutrition is strongly connected to fitness, specifically whilst sports activities are involved. It is necessary to recognize the physiology of the workout on the way to recognizing the specific metabolic pathways that coexist in the course of sports activities practice (O’Donoghue, 2014). Three things are necessary for athletic success: genetic endowments, level of training, and nutrition. It is impossible to change one’s genetic makeup. The most efficient method for enhancing athletic performance is specialized exercise training, and any kind of workout regimen must include adequate nutrition. The dietary requirements of athletes and workout aficionados are different from those of physically inactive people due to variations in their calorie needs as well as macro- and micro- nutrient needs. To achieve peak athletic performance, it is crucial to investigate and evaluate the dietary requirements of athletes prior to, during, and following the contest (Cotugnae et al., 2005). Exercises that improve one’s heart health involve swimming, jogging, and climbing. Other exercises that improve one’s flexibility, power, and endurance of muscles involve stretching and hard training with resistance. For example, if someone decides to choose to lose excess fat and to do so, they would design a regular exercise routine that incorporates all of the above-mentioned elements, as well as choosing more nutritious foods in the diet to meet the higher demands to endeavors. Athletic performance requires sports-related abilities. These neuromotor skills, such as balancing, pace, power, durability, stamina, agility, and execution, are particular to sports.

4.1. Introduction
The food is the main factor known to affect the health of an individual. By interference in the protein synthesis, function and metabolites and alteration in genome expression, the healthy condition must be altered to diseased condition. Side by side we can say that the dietary component directly or indirectly modulates the molecular fingerprint and understanding of which is dealt with nutrigenomics. So, by modulation of a particular gene for a specific disease by nutrition, we can prevent the specific disease and promote the health of a population. Consuming fruits and vegetables on a regular basis has been linked to better health outcomes and diminution of several chronic or life style linked diseases.
Concept of Nutritional Genomics
After completion of human genome sequencing, the unique term “Nutritional genomics” tends to replace the old term “Nutrient-gene interaction”. It has been stated that so many polymorphism can influence protein structure and function. There are several regulatory sites where nutrients can impact the flow of genetic information. The two components of the nutritional genomics field are nutrigenomics, which studies how dietary components interact with the genome to regulate changes in proteins and other metabolism, and nutrigenetics, which determines how dietary components affect genetic variations. (Farhud et al., 2010). Nutrients are as environmental influences can interact with genetic material. It is commonly known that DNA metabolism and repair require a range of dietary elements that serve as cofactors or substrates in metabolic pathways. However, little is known about how cofactors and/or micronutrient excess or deficiency affect the accuracy of DNA replication and repair (Caroline and Fenech, 2008). The response to a particular nutrient, which is determined by the individual genotype, must also be taken into consideration, even though the nutrients can influence the development of a particular phenotypic.

5.1. Introduction
The people of every nation would be healthier if they adopted healthier lifestyles. A Good nutrition, daily exercise and proper sleep are the base of healthy living. A healthy lifestyle denoted by fit, energetic and at minimize possibility for disease. According to WHO, Healthy living is a way of living that helps you enjoy more aspects of your life. It is a way of living that lowers the risk of being seriously ill or dying early. Health is not just about avoiding a disease or illness.
5.2. Concept of Health
According to WHO, Health is the state of complete physical, mental and social well being and not merely absence of disease or infirmity. The holistic approach of health is the individual’s health and lifestyle considering all four factors, physical, intellectual, emotional and social. It concern about the whole body and mind not just a part of the body and the symptoms of the problem. It will look at the lifestyle of the individual such as nutritional deficiencies, reason of stress and why there is a lack of good health and wellbeing. A holistic approach will engage the individual taking responsibility for their health and well-being. They do this by educating themselves and being active in maintaining and improving their health and well-being.
5.2.1. Positive Health
Positive Health is the scientific study of health assets. A “health asset” is a factor that construct stronger health, over and above risk factors for disease. Positive Health works to find which specific health assets produce longer, healthy life, and which health assets lower disease risk and health care costs. The aim is to strive for optimal health —beyond the mere absence of illness.

6.1. Introduction
The best way to combat malnutrition globally among women and children have changed over the last few years keeping pace with the advancement of technology. Information and communication technologies (ICT) have become very important for solving the contemporary nutrition related issues because they provide a vast array of new communication capabilities. In addition to meeting society’s actual needs for ongoing health and nutrition care, ICTs are crucial for facilitating interactive, personalized nutrition communication. People can interact or communicate with others in different countries in real-time through instant messaging, video conferencing or voice over IP (internet protocol). Through social networking platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and others, people from all over the world can regularly converse and stay in touch. In the context of health communication, ICT is referred to as Interactive Health Communication (IHC), which is the exchange of health information and advice and support regarding health-related matters between a consumer, patient, caregiver, or professional using an electronic device or communication technology. Nutrition treatments are less expensive when face-to-face interaction is facilitated by electronic means. These are complementary factors that encourage nutrition communication in an information-age healthcare system, especially when combined with consumers’ growing desire to take charge of their own health. Customers can advantageously use information technology in this system to connect with health professionals and support groups, obtain absolutely relevant information, and take charge of their own health. The “global village,” which has been made possible by modern information and communication technology, allows people to interact with each other virtually as if they were neighbours. Because of this, ICT is frequently examined in relation to the ways that contemporary communication technologies influence society.

7.1. Introduction
Entrepreneurs serve as the catalysts for the introduction of innovative technologies and systems that ultimately lead to societal advancements. These innovations are linked to enhanced lifestyles, progressive thinking, morale, and bravery, along with an improved standard of living. National and global changes are greatly influenced by such kinds of social change. Joseph Schumpeter, an Australian famous economist, is referred to as the father of entrepreneurship. Dhirubhai Ambani was the most enterprising Indian entrepreneur. Jamsetji Tata set a bar for entrepreneurship development in India with the foundation of the Tata group. The father of entrepreneurship in India is Ratan Tata. In public health, nutrition-based entrepreneurship and self-employment are also another emerging topic nowadays. Several entrepreneurs are found in this field mostly due to the challenge of building a business and craving to control their destiny. Not only that, financial independence, personal satisfaction, relief from the frustration of working for someone else, and the opportunity to create the desired lifestyle. Nutrition entrepreneurship offers numerous business-related resources and provides services for social well-being. As for example, the transformation of raw food ingredients into consumable food products, entrepreneurship plays a key role in diversifying and commercializing agricultural products. It adds value of food, prolongs its shelf life, promotes the export of processed items, generates employment opportunities, boosts farmers’ earnings, and makes a significant contribution to the general development of rural areas. Health entrepreneurs like nutritionists, dietitians, physicians, and health counsellors run their practice and make it available for the client to listen to their problems and solve their problems through mental support, motivation, diet therapy, medication, and so on. As a result, the health burdens due to noncommunicable and communicable diseases are reduced.

8.1. Introduction
Micronutrients are vitamins, minerals, and nutraceuticals that do not provide energy and do not raise any sensation of hunger known as “hidden hunger” or “insensible hunger”. Hidden hunger that causes micronutrient deficiency affects 2 billion people globally. Due to the deficiency of micronutrients, different diseases are noted among public health professionals that reflect poor community nutrition. To overcome these deficiency-related diseases, one of the important approaches is food fortification. Food fortification is a public health policy to reduce the number of individuals, who suffer from micronutrient deficiencies within a population. Common examples include iodine-tagged common salt, vitamin A-containing oil, and iron-enriched rice all of which are examples of food fortification. In the agricultural field, food fortification (FF) and/or food enrichment (FE) is the most efficient strategy to overcome various micronutrient deficiencies by the addition of essential micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to enhance the nutritional value of cultivated crops. According to World Health Organization (WHO) and Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations (UN), “Food fortification” is defined as “the practice of deliberately increasing the content of an essential micronutrient, i.e., vitamins and minerals (including trace elements) in a food irrespective of whether the nutrients were originally in the food before processing or not, so as to improve the nutritional quality of the food supply and to provide a public health benefit with minimum risk to health” (Pant and Chinwan, 2014). “Fortificant” refers to the incorporation of substances in the food to provide micronutrients. “Micronutrients” refers to the important dietary components, including vitamins and minerals, that are required in very small amounts but are engaged in very critical roles in various body functions and disease prevention.

9.1. Introduction
The three basic need for human survival are- food, clothing and shelter. The requirement of food comes first. Human are omnivorous. They eat mainly natural foods. Before 5000 years ago, cereals were the main food for all civilization and then the complexity of life began to make appearing with the advent of industrialization, flourishing of industry and commerce. Unpolished grains were utilised at first, but in contemporary civilisation, we have begun to prepare them, which results in the loss of essential nutrients. The intake of meats, processed meals, and sugary goods has grown while the general intake of cereals has decreased. People now lack vital nutrients as a result of the departure from natural diets. People began to realise a few years ago that health is a significant concern in addition to flavour, convenience, and quality value. They have thus begun taking nutritional vitamin supplements to make up for the nutrients lost from processed meals. People are increasingly opting for natural nutraceuticals in capsules and tablets, a trend known as medicalization in nutrition, instead of relying on natural food items. Hippocrates emphasized the connection between food and medicine, stating that healthy foods has a strong therapeutic advantages. The ancient Indian medical system known as Ayurveda places a strong focus on the functioning of diet and nutraceuticals in both health and illness.
9.2. What are Nutraceuticals
Stephen De Felice, the founder and chief executive of the Foundation for Innovation in Medicine (FIM), first used the term “nutraceuticals” in 1989 to refer to the broad category of medicines and nutrition. Nutraceuticals are foods or dietary components that not only offer nourishment and energy but also significantly contribute to regulating and preserving the regular physiological processes that keep people healthy. Nutraceuticals included processed meals such as cereal-grains, soups or stews, genetically engineered foodstuffs, herbal items, nutritional supplements, and extracted nutrients. People are increasingly concerned about their healthy wellbeing these days. However, these include a hectic, sedentary lifestyle, unhealthy eating patterns, body image issues, and being afflicted by a number of illnesses. These are the factors driving the global nutraceutical market’s expansion and generating a lot of interest. Numerous health issues of the century, including cancer, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, inflammation, oxidative stress, constipation, and more, can be fought off with the use of these nutraceuticals. Overall, nutraceuticals bring an entirely novel phase in medical science and assist the food companies to promote more creative research strategies. (Dudeja and Gupta, 2017)).

Therapeutic Aspects of Drug-nutrient Interactions
Drug-nutrient interactions are expressed as physical, chemical, and pathophysiological relationships between a drug and a nutrient. This reaction is multifactorial. The drug has the potential ability to interact with nutrients which may lead to a reduction or enhancement of therapeutic efficacy, nutritional risk, and drug toxicity. Even such interactions lead to the discontinuation of drug therapy. But these kinds of interactions vary from person to person. Infants and children are the most vulnerable group in this concern as they are in the developmental phase where there is a lack of proper drug-metabolizing enzymes and inefficient renal function. Generally, DNIs signify negative impacts on human health but sometimes these interactions work in a positive way by reducing irritation in the GI tract or by increasing the absorption of drugs. Proper updated knowledge about DNIs is important for the appliance of diet therapy simultaneously with drug therapy as both of these are important strategies to manage or treat public health issues (Table 10.1., Table 10.2.).

Agricultural sciences stand at the forefront of human progress, addressing some of the world’s most pressing challenges - from ensuring global food security to mitigating the effects of climate change. This multidisciplinary field encompasses the study of crop production, animal husbandry, soil science, agrometeorology, biotechnology, and agricultural economics, all working collectively to improve farming systems and resource management. With the global population projected to surpass 9 billion by 2050, agricultural sciences hold the key to producing more food sustainably while minimizing the environmental footprint of agriculture. However, the effectiveness of agricultural sciences in meeting these challenges depends not only on the quality of research produced but also on the systems that govern how this research is evaluated, disseminated, and applied.
One of the most significant drivers of academic and professional success in agricultural sciences is the journal rating system. These systems serve as benchmarks for evaluating the quality and impact of scholarly publications, influencing funding decisions, academic promotions, and research collaborations. A Research Evaluation System is a structured framework or methodology used to assess and measure the quality, impact, and relevance of research activities, outputs, and outcomes. These systems are crucial in academia, industry, and research institutions to ensure that resources are used effectively and that research aligns with organizational or societal goals. The evaluation of performance in scientific research at any level - whether at the individual, institutional, research council or country level – is not easy. Traditionally, research evaluation at the individual and institutional levels has depended largely on peer opinion, but with the rapid growth of science over the last century and the availability of databases and scientometric techniques, quantitative indicators have gained importance. Yet, the methodologies underlying these rating systems are often opaque, biased, and narrowly focused on quantitative metrics such as citation counts and impact factors. Such limitations create barriers for researchers from underrepresented regions and disciplines, perpetuating global disparities in scientific research and its application. Both peer review and metrics are subject to flaws, more so in India because of the way they are used. Government agencies, funding bodies and academic and research institutions in India suffer from the impact factor and h-index syndrome. The uninformed use of indicators such as average and cumulative impact factors and the arbitrary criteria stipulated by some agencies

Journal ratings are instrumental in shaping the trajectory of scientific research, particularly in the field of agricultural sciences. They significantly influence the visibility, credibility, and funding of research endeavors, often acting as benchmarks for academic excellence and institutional prestige. However, the methodologies used to assign these ratings have been a subject of intense scrutiny due to their lack of transparency and inherent biases. This chapter explores the multifaceted role of journal ratings in agricultural sciences, shedding light on their impact on research priorities, academic careers, and international scientific collaborations. It also examines the limitations of current rating systems, including their excessive reliance on metrics like the impact factor and the geographical biases that disadvantage researchers from developing countries.
2.1. Importance of Journal Ratings in Agricultural Sciences
Agricultural sciences encompass a broad range of disciplines, from crop genetics and soil science to agricultural economics and rural development. The field is pivotal for addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and sustainable development. Journal ratings serve as a critical tool for researchers, institutions, and funding agencies to evaluate the quality and relevance of scientific contributions.
2.1.1. Enhancing Research Visibility
High-rated journals often serve as the primary platforms for disseminating groundbreaking research. Publishing in these journals ensures greater visibility among peers, policymakers, & practitioners. This visibility is crucial in agricultural sciences, where translating research findings into practice can have immediate and far-reaching impacts on food systems and livelihoods. For instance, research on drought-resistant crops published in a high-impact journal is more likely to influence agricultural policies and attract investment in technology transfer

Journal Citation Reports (JCR) and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) are widely used metrics for evaluating journal impact. While JCR is based on Web of Science and emphasizes high-impact journals, SJR uses Scopus data, offering broader geographic and disciplinary coverage. This chapter evaluates their relative strengths and weaknesses, focusing on their applicability across disciplines and geographies. Multiple trends also impact research landscapes across the globe (Fig. 3.1).
Comprehensive tables provide a comparative overview of which metric is more suitable for various disciplines and global regions. The assessment of academic journals plays a critical role in research evaluation, academic promotions, and funding decisions. Two prominent journal-ranking systems, JCR and SJR, serve as benchmarks for these purposes. JCR, managed by Clarivate Analytics, primarily focuses on citation frequency over a two-year window. Conversely, SJR, developed by SCImago using Scopus data, incorporates a prestige-weighted citation approach over a three-year period (Fig. 3.2). Several of our Indian Scientific Journals are not covered by JCR. As more than 80 per cent Journals are from Europe and North America. The CLARIVATE covers only few Indian Journals most of which are published by Central Government Agencies

Since its founding in the early 2000s, Scopus - which describes itself as a “source-neutral abstract and citation database curated by independent subjectmatter experts” — has been recognized as one of the top research indexes. At the time of writing this blog post, Scopus includes over 25,100 titles from 5,000 publishers, spanning 240 academic disciplines - with a staggering 76.8 million core records. Scopus encompasses research across scholarly disciplines but consists primarily of science and technology articles (Fig. 4.1).
There are many benefits to having journals added to the Scopus database. In addition to its extensive content coverage encompassing virtually all subjects, Scopus is known for its high level of academic rigor, including an annual journal re-evaluation process, which it requires as “an incentive for journals to maintain their high content quality.”
Scopus also provides a wide range of metrics for indexed content, including
• Journal-level metrics such as Citescore, which both publishes an annual impact score and gives monthly updates on how things are currently shaping up for each of the indexed titles via the CiteScore Tracker
• Article-level metrics such as PlumX, which analyzes how readers are responding to content in the broader online context (i.e., via tweets, blogs, Wikipedia references, etc.)
• Author-level metrics such as the h-index, which aims to provide an objective measure of the overall impact of individual authors’ publication histories.

Increased importance of research publications, impact factor and citations as metrics in evaluating science and assessing the quality of research is driving unethical practices too in research and publications. Adding to that, limited access to research publications, exuberant subscription charges, heavy article processing charges and several other transboundary science and technology issues are further dividing the scientific community which is severely impacting the progress of the Nation (Pathak, 2025). The National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) journal rating system serves as a cornerstone for researchers in India, particularly in the domain of agricultural sciences. Its significance lies in providing an accessible and systematic framework for evaluating the quality and relevance of academic journals. This chapter explores avenues for enhancing the NAAS journal rating methodologies to ensure greater accuracy, inclusivity, and ethical rigor in the assessment process. By integrating global best practices, incorporating diverse metrics, and addressing emerging challenges in the academic publishing landscape, the proposed framework aims to make NAAS ratings more robust and globally competitive. To enable universal access to scholarly scientific literature, under Aatmanirbhar Bharat it would be appropriate to strengthen our own Indian Journals to compete globally in the long run. In this regard, NAAS rating of Agri-journals has been a progressive step and NAAS should continue to upgrade its evaluation mechanism. The Professional Association of Agricultural Societies (PAAS) and NAAS partnership in upgrading of publications in Indian society journals should be encouraged.

In the world of academic publishing, Article Processing Charges (APCs) have emerged as a significant barrier, particularly for researchers from countries with limited resources like India. These charges, often levied by open-access journals to cover the costs of peer review, editing, and dissemination, have created a financial divide that impedes equitable access to scholarly communication. This chapter delves into the multifaceted challenges posed by APCs and outlines potential solutions to address the inequities they perpetuate (Fig. 6.1).
6.1. The Burden of Article Processing Charges
The financial burden of APCs is disproportionately felt by researchers in developing nations. Many prestigious open-access journals charge APCs ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 or more per article. For researchers in high-income countries, these charges might be manageable, supported by robust institutional funding or grants. However, for their counterparts in countries like India, where research funding is limited and often tied to modest institutional budgets, such costs are prohibitive. The disparity in income and currency exchange rates further amplifies this challenge. A charge of $2,000, for instance, could equate to several months’ salary for a researcher in India, compared to a fraction of that amount for a researcher in the United States or Europe.

Scientific leadership is a cornerstone of progress in agricultural sciences, playing a pivotal role in driving innovation, fostering collaboration, and addressing global challenges such as food security, climate change, and sustainable resource management. Effective scientific leadership ensures that research efforts are strategically aligned with pressing societal needs and that knowledge generated in laboratories and fields translates into tangible benefits for farmers, policymakers, and communities. This chapter delves into the qualities of effective leaders in agricultural sciences, the challenges they face, and strategies to nurture and support scientific leadership in this critical domain. The G20 Chief Science Advisers Roundtable (G20-CSAR), initiated under India’s G20 Presidency, is a flagship program aimed at fostering collaboration and enhancing access to scholarly scientific knowledge. This effort emphasizes the synergy of scientific expertise, ensuring that innovations and advancements are not only accessible but also utilized effectively to address pressing global concerns, such as climate change, public health, sustainable development, and digital transformation. Through this platform, India seeks to promote open science, equitable knowledge-sharing, and stronger international cooperation in research and development.
7.1. Qualities of Effective Leaders in Agricultural Sciences
To excel in agricultural sciences, leaders must embody a diverse range of qualities that enable them to inspire teams, foster innovation, and drive impactful research. These qualities include:
7.1.1. Strong Communication Skills
Effective leaders in agricultural sciences must be adept at communicating complex scientific concepts to diverse audiences. Whether engaging with fellow researchers, policymakers, farmers, or the general public, they must tailor their messages to ensure clarity and relevance. Strong communication skills are also essential for securing research funding, building partnerships, and advocating for science-based policies.

In the evolving landscape of agricultural sciences, integrative research models have emerged as a cornerstone for addressing complex, multifaceted challenges. These models bridge the gap between theoretical frameworks and their practical applications, ensuring that innovations are not just conceptual but also actionable and impactful. This chapter delves into the essence of integrative research models, highlighting their significance, successful case studies, and strategies to foster their adoption and effectiveness in agricultural progress.
8.1. The Need for Integrative Research Models
Agriculture today is at the nexus of critical global challenges, including climate change, food security, biodiversity loss, and resource scarcity. Traditional, siloed research approaches often fall short in addressing these interconnected issues. Integrative research models offer a paradigm shift by combining insights from diverse disciplines such as agronomy, ecology, economics, data science, and social sciences. This approach not only enhances the depth of understanding but also ensures that solutions are holistic and sustainable (Fig. 8.1).
One of the primary drivers for adopting integrative research models is the increasing complexity of agricultural systems. Modern agriculture is no longer

Global agricultural research, an essential field in ensuring food security and sustainable development, is heavily influenced by the academic and publishing ecosystems in Europe and North America. These issues underscore the need for greater inclusivity and recognition of regional expertise to foster a more equitable global research landscape.
9.1. Dominance of Europe and North America in Agricultural Research
Publishing
The dominance of Europe and North America in agricultural research publishing is evident from the distribution of international journals in agriculture and allied disciplines. Approximately 75% of these journals originate from these regions. Breaking this down further:
• Europe accounts for 43.6% of international journals, with leading contributors including the United Kingdom (14.1%), the Netherlands (8.5%), Germany (6.2%), France (4.3%), Italy (3.5%), and other European countries (7.0%).
• North America contributes 31.4%, with the United States alone publishing 28.5% and Canada accounting for 2.9%.

The credibility of academic publishing hinges significantly on the integrity of journal rating systems. These systems, designed to evaluate and rank academic journals based on various metrics, play a pivotal role in shaping research priorities, funding allocations, and academic career trajectories. However, despite their importance, many journal rating systems are criticized for lacking transparency and ethical rigor (Fig. 10.1).
This chapter explores these shortcomings, focusing on potential biases embedded in current systems and proposing solutions to enhance their transparency and fairness.
10.1. Role of Journal Rating Systems in Academic Publishing
Journal rating systems serve as gatekeepers in the academic publishing ecosystem. They influence where researchers choose to publish their work, how institutions evaluate scholarly output, and how funding agencies allocate resources. Metrics such as impact factor, h-index, and SCImago Journal Rank (SJR) are commonly used to rank journals. These metrics, while useful, often reduce the multifaceted nature of scholarly impact into single numerical values, potentially oversimplifying and distorting the evaluation process. The reliance on these metrics creates a feedback loop wherein highly ranked journals attract more submissions, increasing their citation counts and reinforcing their dominance. This system can marginalize smaller or niche journals that publish

Predatory journals undermine the integrity of academic publishing by charging exorbitant fees without providing rigorous peer review. These deceptive entities exploit the academic community, especially targeting early-career researchers, those from underfunded institutions, and scholars in developing countries. By prioritizing profit over quality, predatory journals erode trust in the research ecosystem, dilute scientific knowledge, and tarnish the reputation of genuine academic endeavors (Fig. 11.1).
This chapter delves into the multifaceted challenges posed by predatory journals and outlines comprehensive strategies for researchers, institutions, and policymakers to combat their pernicious effects.
11.1. Understanding Predatory Journals
Predatory journals are characterized by their lack of transparency, absence of editorial rigor, and aggressive solicitation of authors. They often masquerade as legitimate open-access journals but fail to adhere to the ethical standards of scholarly publishing. Unlike reputable journals, which uphold rigorous peer-review processes to ensure the validity and originality of research, predatory journals accept articles with minimal or no scrutiny. This results in the dissemination of low-quality or even fraudulent research, undermining the credibility of academic literature.
Several red flags can help researchers identify predatory journals. These include:

National journals play a crucial role in the dissemination of regionally relevant research, particularly in specialized fields such as agricultural sciences. These journals act as accessible platforms for researchers, practitioners, and policymakers to share findings, innovations, and solutions tailored to local contexts. Strengthening national journals is essential for fostering knowledge exchange, promoting inclusivity in scientific communication, and addressing the unique challenges faced by different regions (Fig. 12.1).
This chapter explores strategies for improving the quality, visibility, and credibility of national journals, with examples from countries across the globe, including those outside North America and Europe. Case studies of successful initiatives are included to illustrate best practices for empowering local publishing platforms, with a particular focus on non-English publications.
12.1. The Importance of National Journals in Agricultural Sciences
Agricultural sciences are inherently context-dependent. Local factors such as climate, soil type, cropping systems, and socioeconomic conditions influence the challenges faced by farmers and the solutions that are most effective. National journals provide a vital medium for addressing these region-specific issues, enabling researchers to publish studies that may not align with the broader focus of international journals. Furthermore, these journals often cater to the immediate needs of local policymakers, extension workers, and educators, ensuring that research findings are translated into actionable outcomes.

The current systems of journal rating and evaluation have long been criticized for their emphasis on narrow metrics, such as the journal impact factor (JIF), which often fail to reflect the broader contributions of academic work. Despite their widespread use, these systems frequently reinforce inequities within academia, marginalize underrepresented voices, and fail to prioritize the societal impacts of research (Fig. 13.1).
This chapter consolidates recommendations for reforming journal rating systems, emphasizing fairness, inclusivity, and societal impact. Drawing on existing literature and expert recommendations, we outline a comprehensive framework for designing a rating system that balances academic rigor with accessibility and relevance.
13.1. Revising Evaluation Metrics
The reliance on metrics such as JIF has perpetuated a cycle of prioritizing high-citation fields and well resourced institutions. Garfield (2006), the founder of the JIF, himself noted that it was never intended to serve as the singular measure of research quality, yet its dominance in academia persists. Critics argue that the JIF favors fields with inherently higher citation rates, sidelining disciplines such as the humanities, social sciences, and regional studies (Moher et al., 2018). Moreover, the JIF incentivizes salacious or sensational findings that attract citations, often at the expense of methodological rigor (Brembs et al., 2013). To address these issues, scholars have proposed alternative evaluation metrics that prioritize broader dimensions of impact. For example, the Leiden Manifesto (Hicks et al., 2015) outlines ten principles for responsible research evaluation,

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. These goals aim to address global challenges, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice (Fig. 14.1).
14.1. Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
The SDGs provide a universal framework to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. Following is the list of the 17 SDGs
1. No Poverty: End poverty in all its forms everywhere.
2. Zero Hunger: End hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture.
3. Good Health and Well-Being: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.
