Soil is defined as the thin layer of earth’s crust made up of disintegrated and decomposed rocks, complex mineral compound, organic matter, water/air and living organism like bacteria, fungi, insects and worms and serves as the natural medium of growth of plants.

• It provides nutrients, moisture, anchorage (support) and provides air to root system.
• There are different soil groups found in varied regions of India.
• Each group differs from other in physical and chemical properties.
• The variation in behaviour is mainly due to the nature of the parent material from which the soils are formed.
• Parent materials are Igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks.
• Physical properties like structure, texture, colour, water holding capacity, depth etc. are to be noted. Chemical properties like the presence of various plant elements, pH, EC, CEC, acidic or alkaline, etc. are considered.

Agricultural Seasons

Season is defined as “part of the year during which a distinguished type of weather prevails”.

A) Seasons of Temperate region

1. Spring (March – May) is the first season of the year in which plants being to grow and leaves emerge.
2. Summer (June – August) is the second and warmest season of the year out side the tropics during which plants flourish
3. Fall or Autumn (September – November) is the third season of the year in which leaves turn brown.
4. Winter (December – February) is the last and the coldest season of the year. Many trees loose their leaves.

For better understanding of different systems of farming it is essential to study certain terminologies.

Farm is a piece of land with specific boundaries, where crop and livestock enterprises are taken up under a common management.

Farming is the process of harnessing solar energy in the form of economic plant and animal products or it is the business of cultivating land, raising livestock etc.

System refers to an orderly set of interdependent and interacting components none of which can be modified without causing a related change elsewhere in the system.

There are three district systems of farming as wetland system of farming, garden land (irrigated dry land) system of farming and dryland system of farming.

Wetland: Pertaining to soils flooded or copiously irrigated through lake or pond or tank for a least several weeks in each year (or) to crop growth in such soils. The water is not entirely under the control of the farmer.

Tillage operations in various forms have been practiced from the very inception of growing plants. Primitive man used tools to disturb the soils for placing seeds. The word tillage is derived from the Anglo-Saxon words tilian and teolian, meaning to plough and prepare soil for seed to sow, to cultivate and to raise crops. Jethro Tull, who is considered as father of tillage suggested that thorough ploughing is necessary so as to make the soil into fine particles.

Seed is a fertilized ripened ovule consisting of three main parts namely seed coat, endosperm and embryo which in due course gives rise to a new plant. Seed is the nucleus of life. Endosperm is the storage organ for food substance that nourishes the embryo during its development. Seed coat is the outer cover that protects or shields the embryo and endosperm.

Importance

Plants reproduce sexually by seeds and asexually by vegetative parts. Grains which are used for multiplication are called seeds while those used for human or animal consumption are called grains. Good stalks of planting materials are basic to profitable crop production. The seed or planting material largely determines the quality and quantity of the produce. A good seed or stalk of planting material is genetically satisfactory and true to type, fully developed and free from contamination, deformities, diseases and pests.

Crop Stand Establishment

Good crop establishment is one of the most important features in better crop production. The better crop establishment is in turn expressed as optimum plant population in fields.

Plant population is the number of plants per unit area in a cropped field. It indicates the size of the area available for individual plant.

Optimum Plant Population

It is the number of plants required to produce maximum output or biomass per unit area. Any increase beyond this stage results in either no increase or reduction in biomass.

Crop geometry is the pattern of distribution of plant over the ground or the shape of the area available to the individual plant, in a crop field.

Weeds are the plants, which grow where they are not wanted. Jethro Tull (1731) coined the word weed. Weeds can also be referred to as plants out of place.

Definition

Weeds are unwanted and undesirable plant that interfere with utilization of land and water resources and thus, adversely affect crop production and human welfare.

In organic agriculture weeds are treated as childrens of the soil.

In the world 30,000 species of weeds have been listed, of which nearly 18,000 cause serious damage to agricultural production. Eighteen weeds are considered as the most serious in the world and about twenty six species have been listed as principal weeds in crop fields of India, and are listed in annexure V

Irrigation

Irrigation is defined as the artificial application of water to the soil for the purpose of crop production in supplement to rainfall and ground water contribution.

Time of Irrigation

The time schedule which indicates when irrigation water is to be applied and the quantity of water to be applied at that time is called irrigation schedule. There are several approaches for scheduling irrigation:

1. Soil moisture depletion approach based on the available soil moisture in the root zone.
2. Climatological approach based on the amount of water lost by evapotranspiration.
3. Combination approach based on soil moisture depletion and climatological approaches.
4. Critical stage approach which indicates the growth stages at which moisture stress leads to yield loss. These stages are known as critical period or moisture sensitive period. In cereals and millets panicle initiation and flowering stages are moisture sensitive stages. In pulses and oilseeds, flowering and pod development stages are critical stages. In sugarcane active tillering or formative stage is critical and in cotton boll development is the critical stage.

Growth is the development of a plant as a whole or of a specific organ. Besides the genetic factors, the environmental factors grouped as climatic factors and soil factors influence plant growth. The supply of mineral nutrient elements to the plants is discussed in this chapter.

A complete analysis of plants detects large number of elements. But only certain elements are essential. An element is said to be essential if the plant cannot complete its life cycle without it, and if the malady (deficiency) that develops in plants in its absence can be remedied only by that element.

Earlier 16 elements were considered as essential for plant growth. They are carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, sulphur, iron, manganese, zinc, copper, molybdenum, boron and chlorine. Recently, sodium, cobalt, vanadium, silica, selenium, gallium, aluminium and iodine are added to the above list. One or the other of these elements (recently added) has been found to be essential for a particular species of plants.

Carbon dioxide, water and molecular oxygen are the forms in which C., H and O are assimilated by plants. Others are taken up by plants from the soil. Nutrient uptake by plants accounts for about 10 percent of total dry weight of crops, the remaining percentage being water. The chemical symbol and the ionic forms in which the essential elements are absorbed by the plants are as follows.

Harvesting: “Removal of entire plant or economic parts after maturity from the field" is called harvesting. It includes the operation of cutting, picking, plucking or digging or a combination of these for removing the useful part or economic part from the plants / crops. The portion of the stem that is left in the field after harvest is called as stubble. The economic product may be grain, seed, leaf, root or entire plant.

Harvest Index: (H.I): It is the ratio of the economic yield to the total biological yield expressed as percentage.

H.I = Economic yield / Biological yield x 100

Time of Harvesting: If the crop is harvested early, the produce contains high moisture and more immature ill filled and shriveled grains. High moisture leads to pest attack and reduction in germination percentage and impairs the grain quality.

Late harvesting results in shattering of grains, germination even before harvesting during rainy season and breakage during processing.

1.1 Historical background of the Embryology

Embryology is a branch of Anatomy. It is the study of growth and differentiation undergone by an organism in the course of its development from a single fertilized egg cell into a highly complex and independent living being like its parents. It explains how one develops before he is born. Important changes also take place after birth and continue to occur even to adult stage. eg: Replacement of RbC and WbC is a continuous developmental process and reverting to activities seen in prenatal condition is seen in healing of wounds. So the term ‘Developmental Anatomy’ which includes prenatal and postnatal development is preferred over term embryology as Developmental Anatomy, includes prenatal and postnatal development and as the term embryology refers truly prenatal (Intra uterine) development.

Aristotle (384-332/322 BC) proposed two theories regarding origin of life

Development of the face includes the development of orbital, nasal and oral regions. Development of face involves five facial primordia during the embryonic period of development. These primordia include the single frontonasal prominence and the paired maxillary and mandibular prominences.

The frontonasal prominence forms two sets of bilateral ectodermal thickenings, the nasal and lens placodes. Frontonasal prominence shows nasal component (of ridges) and a frontal component. A thickned area of ectoderm olfactory/ nasal placode appears at the medial tips of frontonasal prominence.

Alimentary canal : The endoderm is formed by delamination in mammals and birds. This endoderm surrounded by splanchnic mesoderm forms the gut. The endoderm underlying the embryonic disc and serving as a flat roof to the early yolk sac becomes gut endoderm. At 20^th day a rapidly expanding embryonic disc begins to fold into a cylindrical embryo. The gut endoderm also participates as a component layer. Folding first into the head end and then into the hind end of elongating embryo this endoderm necessarily takes the form of the two internal blind tubes. The open end of the each tube where it becomes continuous with the yolk sac is called an intestinal portal while the tubes are named the foregut and hindgut. The caudal end of the hindgut is cloaca. An intermediate region opening ventrally into the yolk sac through the narrower yolk stalk is midgut.

The development of the upper respiratory system composed of nasal cavities, naso pharynx and larynx is directly related to the development of the face. The nasal cavities are derived from ectoderm while nasopharynx and larynx are endodermal in origin. The lower respiratory system (trachea and lungs) is a derivative of the embryonic pharynx.

The epithelial lining of the lower respiratory system is endodermal in origin, while the surrounding connective tissue and cartilage are mesodermal in origin. The endoderm and underlying mesoderm from the floor of foregut i.e caudal part of pharynx grow caudally in midline and form the laryngo-tracheal groove at about the level of the branchial arches IV -VI from which the larynx and trachea arise. The laryngotracheal tube consists of an inner endodermal lining and an outer layer of splanchnic mesoderm. It grows into underlying mesenchyme. Ingrowths from the sides of the groove at about the level of the branchial arches IV - VI form a pair of ridges that grow towards each other and fuse forming a septum changing the groove into a tube with a blind end caudally. The rostral end opens into the floor of the pharynx. The blind caudal end expands in a bilobed manner into mesenchyme forming bronchial buds the primordia of right and left lungs while the groove is closing.

larynx : A pair of elevations, aryteniod swellings appears on the floor of the pharynx along midline at the level of branchial arch IV. The hypobranchial eminence is just infront of the arytenoid swellings. The depression between the hypobranchial eminence and the arytenoid swellings becomes the lumen of the larynx. The caudal part of the hypobranchial eminence forms the epiglottis. The arytenoid swellings and adjacent branchial arch mesenchyme form the other laryngeal cartilages and musculature. The thyroid cartilage arises from branchial arches III and IV. The other cartilages are derived from mesenchyme of branchial arches IV, V & VI. The intrinsic musculature of larynx is derived mostly from the branchial arch V and VI. With the exeption of the epiglottic cartilage the cartilages and muscles of the larynx are formed by the end of embryonic period.

The kidneys develop from the nephrotome (intermediate mesoderm). The series of nephrotomes forms urino-genital ridge which splits up into an lateral nephric and a medial genital ridge, which project into the coelom from the dorsal wall. This is the short segment of mesoderm that connects somite with lateral mesoderm. Three sets of kidneys are formed during embryologic development in vertebrates viz., pronephros, mesonephros, and metanephros. First two sets are temporary structures and third set becomes the kidneys found in the adult.

Indifferent stage: Primordia are present for both sexes (gonads and mesonephric and paramesonephric ducts), although genetic sex is determined at fertilization.

Gonads : are structuarally indistinguishable prospective testis and ovaries. The first sign of gonadal development is a swelling called the gonadal ridge on the medial side of the middle part of the mesonephros. It enlarges due to arrival of primary germ cells. Cells of mesonephric tubules invade the ridge to form clusters and besides surround germ cells resulting in gonadal cords.

The primordial germ cells of these gonads arise from the endodermal cells of the yolk sac. These migrate to the gonadal ridge through the dorsal mesentry. Migration of primordial germ cells from the yolk sac endoderm into the gonadal ridges initiates testicular (if SRY gene is present) or ovarian development. The primordial germ cells form the sex cells, called gonadal blastema. The somatic blastema (non-germ cell) forms the other parenchymal elements of the gonads. The germ cells are capable of amoeboid-like movement.

Cardiovascular system consists of heart and blood vessels which include both arteries and veins. Blood vessels formation occurs in two stages i.e vasculogenesis and angiogenesis. Splanchnic mesodermal cells lining the yolk sac form clusters, referred to as blood islands. Vasculogenesis, the formation of blood vessels from blood islands of of Pander, commences during the third week of gestation in domestic animals first in yolk sac and later in the allantois.Development of blood vessels involves a complex series of events during which endothelial cells differentiate, proliferate, migrate and become organized into vascular network. Angiogenesis describes budding and sprouting of new vessels from existing vessels. This process a fundamental requirement for embryological development, continues postnatally.

Lymph vessels arise from mesoderm by vasculogenesis and angiogenesis in common with the arteries and veins. Initially six primary lymph sacs develop in the late embryonic period. They are paired jugular sacs lateral to the internal jugular veins, a single retroperitoneal sac developing close to the root of the mesentry, the cisterna chyli dorsal to the retroperitoneal sac and a pair of iliac sacs at the junction of the iliac veins.

Lymphatic vessels draining the head, neck and fore limbs arise from jugular sacs. Drainage of lymph from the pelvic region and hind limbs is through the iliac sacs, while the retroperitoneal sac and cisterna chyli drain the viscera. At a later stage of lymphatic development, the lymph sacs become interconnected by a series of lymphatic vessels.The plexus between the jugular sacs and the cisterna chyli gives rise to the thoracic duct which opens into the jugular veins.

lymphatic organs : The lymphatic organs are fully developed and functional before birth. Immunocompetent cells can be detected in most lymphatic organs by the end of the second trimester of gestation.

lymphnodes : The lymphnodes are formed by the partitioning of small lymph vessels or sacs. Therefore, lymphnodes are usually found in related groups or in chains along the course of a lymph vessel. The partitioning is initiated by the ingrowth of mesenchymal processes into the lymph vessel. The mesenchyme forms a network of lymph sinusoids that communicate with the lumen of the lymph vessel. The mesenchyme also forms a reticular fiber frame work that outlines and supports the sinusoidal network. At this time a blood vessel enters the developing lymphnode. The point of entrance establishes the location of the hilus. At the periphery of the node the mesenchyme condenses to form a capsule. The mammalian lymphnodes consists of cortical and medullary regions. The cortical parenchyma contains lymphnodules, while the central medullary region contains anastomosing cords of lymphoid tissue. The structure of the porcine lymphnode differs from other domestic animals in that the lymphnodules are centrally located with the cords at the periphery. The flow of lymph in the porcine lymphnode is in the opposite direction to that in other domestic animals, with lymph entering at the hilus and leaving from the cortex.

Somites are derived from paraxial mesoderm and they are located lateral to the developing notochord and neural tube. During the third week of gestation in domestic animals, the outlines of somites first become visible and in the fifth week of gestation the somite formation is completed. Somites differentiate into sclerotome, myotome and dermatome. They form skeletal, muscular and dermal elements i.e, vertebral column, muscles and dermis respectively.

The connective tissue, cartilage and bone all differentiate from mesenchyme which arises chiefly from mesodermal somites and lateral layer of somatic mesoderm while connective tissue of alimentary canal and lower respiratory tract is derived from splanchnic mesoderm. Mesenchyme is a spongy meshwork composed of branching cells spaces between which are filled by ground substance. The supporting tissues, connective tissue, cartilage and bone are derivatives of mesenchyme in which ground substance is gelly like, stiff and firm respectively.

The integumentary system comprises the skin its hair and glands and modified cutaneous structures hooves, claws, horns, beak and feathers. Although the mammary gland is a skin derived organ, because of its close association with the female genital system it is included in respective chapter. The skin consists of two layers: a superficial layer, the epidermis, which is derived from ectoderm and a deeper layer, the dermis, which develops from mesoderm.

Epidermis : The epidermal layer covering the entire embryo initially consists of a single layer of cuboidal cells resting on a basal lamina. Shortly after neurulation, these ectodermally derived cells divide and give rise to a superficial layer of flattened cells, the periderm and underlying layer of cuboidal cells, the basal layer. Further, proliferation of the cells gives rise to an intermediate layer resulting in a multi-layered covering of epidermis. Cells of neural crest and mesodermal origin also contribute to the population of cells found in the skin.

Towards the end of the third week of embryological development, the notochord induces the overlying columnar ectodermal cells of the embryonic disc to become pseudostratified neuroepithelial cells and form a spoon shaped thickening of dorsal ectoderm called the neural plate. The cranially expanded region of the neural plate forms the primordium of the brain, while the narrower region caudal to the brain gives rise to spinal cord.

The raised lateral edges of the neural plate form the neural folds while the depressed midline region of the plate forms the neural groove. Cellular proliferation at the medial aspects of the neural folds causes these structures to gradually approach each other in the midline, meet and fuse, forming the neural tube which encloses a central neural canal.

Each optic vesicle grows outwardly until it comes into contact with the surface ectoderm. At this point, the optic vesicle induces the overlying ectoderm to thicken and to invaginate against the optic vesicle. The optic vesicle becomes concave and convert into double walled optic cup. The attachment of optic cup to the brain is called optic stalk. The space between inner and outer walls disappears as they come opposed. Since invagination of optic cup occurs at the ventral margin of the vesicle a groove is formed in ventral rim of the cup which extends along the ventral surface of the optic stalk (choroid fissure) which closes at the end of embryonic period. The groove and the notch in the optic cup are referred to collectively as the optic fissure. The optic fissure begins to close by fusion of its edges soon after the optic cup is completely formed. While it is open, the fissure allows a branch of the choroid artery (Hyaloid artery) into the cavity of the optic cup.

With the development of the optic cup the lens placode invaginates into rim of the optic vesicle and forms lens vesicle. The lens vesicle loses contact with the surface ectoderm and positioned at the opening of the optic cup and forms lens.

The defined endocrine glands include the pituitary gland, the pineal gland, the adrenal glands, the thyroid gland and the parathyroid glands. The organs which contain groups of endocrine cells include the pancreas, the testis, ovary and placenta. The Hassall's corpuscles of thymus secrete hormone which contributes to the maturation of T-lymphocytes. Hence the thymus can be considered as having an endocrine function.

Pineal gland (Epiphysis cerebri) : Develops as a dorsal neuro epithelial diverticulum of the caudal part of the roof of the diencephalon. After its formation the gland remains attached to the diencephalon by a stalk. The neuroepithelial cells differentiate into pinealocytes and glial cells. The developing gland is surrounded by a thin layer of piamater.

Teratology : is the study of abnormal development. If the malformation involves an organ or only a portion of the body, it is called an anomaly. If it is so extensive great deformity of the individual occurs when the animal is designated a monster.

etiological basis of teratology : All teratogenic agents directly or indirectly ar;ect the process of cell differentiation. These agents are divided into two broad categories i.e genetic or Intrinsic factors and environmental or extrinsic factors.

Genetic or Intrinsic factors : There are several types of genetic factors that result in abnormal development.

Sustainable development has caught the imagination and action across the world. Sustainable agriculture is necessary to attain the goal of sustainable development. The word “sustain,” is derived from the Latin sustinere (sus-, from below and tenere, to hold), to keep in existence or maintain, implies long-term support or permanence. As it pertains to agriculture, sustainable describes “Farming systems that are capable of maintaining productivity and usefulness to society indefinitely. Such systems must be resource-conserving, socially supportive, commercially competitive, and environmentally sound”. “Sustainable agriculture is the successful management of resources for agriculture to satisfy changing human needs while maintaining or enhancing the quality of environment and conserving natural resources” (FAO). All definitions of sustainable agriculture lay great emphasis on maintaining an agriculture growth rate, which can meet the demand for food of all living things without draining the basic resources. Over time, the International Alliance for sustainable agriculture and an increasing number of researchers, farmers, policy-makers and organizations worldwide have developed a definition that unifies many diverse elements into a widely adopted, comprehensive, working definition

2.1 Introduction

Microbes are the oldest form of the life on earth. These organisms date more than 3 billion years to a time when they were covered with oceans. They are so tiny in size that million microbes can fit into the eye of a needle. Without microbes, we can’t live. Thus, understanding microbes is vital to understanding past and future. Microbes play vary roles in the earth’s environment recycling dead plant and animal matter through the soil, removing CO₂ from the atmosphere by photosynthesis in the oceans and nitrogen from the atmosphere to form nitrogenous fertilizers plants. Microbes play an important role in nutrient recycling, management, organic matter, decomposition and increasing the crop productivity and quality against diseases. Over the past century, many of the basic scientific principles of plant nutrition and soil fertility have been explained. In developed countries, inorganic chemical fertilizers have been widely accepted as a major source of improving and maintaining soil fertility. Plants need sufficient nutrients in proper balance for normal growth and development. Seventeen plant nutrients are essential for proper crop development. Each is equally important to the plant, yet each is required in vastly different amounts. Our understanding of nutritional needs of crop plants begin from the famous five year willow tree experiment conducted by J.B. van Helmont (1579–1644).

The earlier products of bio-fertilizers were carrier (solid) based where lignite is usually added as a carrier material. Lignite is hazardous to the production workers. Also, the shelf life of carrier based bio-fertilizers is only 6 months and is difficult to transport. Liquid Biofertilizers (LBFs) on the other hand have a shelf life of minimum one year, with no health hazards to production workers and are easy to transport. Additionally, LBF can be used in drip irrigation and as a component of organic farming. The liquid Bio fertilizers are suspensions having agriculturally useful microorganisms, which fix atmospheric nitrogen and solubilize insoluble phosphates and make it available for the plants. The use of this biofertilizer is environment friendly and gives uniform results for most of the agricultural crops and directly reduces the use of chemical fertilizer by 15 to 40%. The shelf life of the liquid bio fertilizer is higher (in the range of one to two years) compared to that of solid matrix base biofertilizer.

3.1 Definition

Liquid biofertilizers are liquid formulation containing the dormant form of desired microorganisms and their nutrients along with the substances that encourage formation of resting spores or cysts for longer shelf life and tolerance to adverse conditions. The dormant form on reaching the soil, germinate to produce fresh batch of active cells. These cells grow and multiply by utilizing the carbon source in the soil or from root exudates.

“A preparation comprising requirements to preserve organisms and deliver them to the target regions to improve their biological activity” or “A consortium of micro-organisms provided with suitable medium to keep up their viability for certain period which aids in enhancing the biological activity of the target site”.

Earthworms have been on the earth for over 20 million years. In this time they have faithfully done their part to keep the cycle of life continuously moving. Their purpose is simple but very important. They are nature’s way of recycling organic nutrients from dead tissues back to living organisms. Many have recognized the value of these worms. Ancient civilizations, including Greece and Egypt valued the role of earthworms played in soil. The Egyptian Pharaoh, Cleopatra said, “Earthworms are sacred”

4.1 Earthworms

Earthworms belong to Phylum Annelida of animal Kingdom. They are long and cylindrical shape, length of earthworms vary from a few mm to nearly 3mtr as noted in case of Megas colex species found in Australia. The body of earthworms has a large number of grooves. Due to these grooves the body of the earthworm is divided into number of compartments called segments. In mature earthworms, few anterior segments appear swollen due to glandular thickening. This part is called as clitellum. The segments are not clearly seen in this part. There are 2500 to 3,000 species of earthworms in the world which are adapted to range of environment. More than 350 species have been identified in India. The species of earthworms are differentiated mostly on the basis of external features such as length of earthworms, number of segments, position of clitellum and external aperture present on the body. Earthworms were referred by Aristotle as “the intestines of earth and the restoring agents of soil fertility”

Agriculture has been very successful in addressing the food and fiber needs of today’s world population. However, there are increasing concerns about the economic, environmental and social costs of this success. Integrated agricultural systems may provide a means to address these concerns while increasing sustainability. Integrated agricultural systems have multiple enterprises that interact in space and time, resulting in a synergistic resource transfer among enterprises. In an integrated agricultural system, management decisions, such as type and amount of commodities to produce, are predetermined. Full integration of agricultural systems at the producer or community scale may help in slowing or reversing some of the detrimental environmental and economic problems associated with specialized industrial agriculture. Modern agriculture requires intensive inputs.

6.1 Introduction

India experienced an impressive growth and productivity gains in agriculture since Independence reflecting our farmers’ resilience against multiple odds and challenges. Despite a structural transformation post-Green Revolution, characterized by a consumer centric and food security policy objective, the regular distress and crises in the recent past pose a severe threat to income and livelihood security of farmers. The income realised from agriculture compared to nonagriculture, has been too low with a wide variation across regions. The average income of an agricultural household during 2012-13 has been estimated as low as at `6426 per month, marginally higher than the average consumption expenditure (`6223). Further, around 23 per cent of the farmers still live below the poverty line (DFI Committee, 2017a). Estimates from the Central Statistics Office’s (CSO) indicated that the annual growth in gross value added from agriculture has reduced drastically from as high as 6.9% (October-December, 2016) to a mere 2.3% (April-June, 2017) at 2011-12 prices in the recent past ten quarters. Shockingly, the growth was lower in nominal terms in comparison to real prices during the April-June, 2017 quarter indicating the creeping deflation in farm sector.

Technological change has been the major driving force for increasing agricultural productivity and promoting agriculture development across the world. In the past, the choice of technologies and their adoption was to increase production, productivity and farm incomes. Over many decades, policies for agriculture, trade, research and development, education, training and advice have been strong influences on the choice of technology, the level of agricultural production and farm practices. Agricultural production today faces several challenges: an increasing world population has to be fed, but at the same time the environment and animal welfare need to be protected. Globalisation has led to increasing international competition, while the agricultural sector is also under heavy economic pressure as a result of regulation. These conditions can perhaps only be met by innovation, be it on the technological or on the systems-level (OECD, 2001). Agriculture is becoming more integrated in the agro-food chain and the global market, while environmental, food safety and quality, and animal welfare regulations are also increasingly impacting on the sector. It is faced with new challenges to meet growing demands for food, to be internationally competitive and to produce agricultural products of high quality. At the same time, it must meet sustainability goals in the context of on-going agricultural policy reform, further trade liberalization and the implementation of multilateral environmental agreements as agreed to by the government.

India is on the progressive path of development and its rural population is an integral part of this growth trajectory. As India gears up for an era of increased digitalisation, the issue of holistic and inclusive economic growth remains a pivotal concern. While India is one of the world’s fastest-developing economy, equitable growth remains a critical imperative. The rural population today constitutes above 45% of the national income. In 2050, despite urbanization, over half of India’s population will still be rural. Prime Minister, Sh. Narendra Modi has prioritized radical digitalisation to induce economic inclusiveness through a host of initiatives. ‘Digital India’, ‘Make in India’ and ‘Skill India’ provide for impetus and opportunity to rural citizens, to ensure they are equal participants in India’s growth story. Digital transformation is the integration of digital technology into all areas of a business, fundamentally changing how you operate and deliver value to customers. It’s also a cultural change that requires organizations to continually challenge the status quo, experiment, and get comfortable with failure. In many developed countries, farming has been modernized by a wave of technologies, adopted at farm level.

Digital technologies are finding increasing use in the agricultural value system, and High-tech farming is becoming the standard, thanks to use of sensors, logic controlled systems, data analytics, etc. In India, the increasing availability of energy and internet connectivity to the large rural landscape is further accelerating such changes. Digitised information systems allow remote access to knowledge, has given rise to group sharing and continue even now to revamp how societal exchanges happen interpersonally, commercially and in the extension services system. The digital spectrogram can be compared against a large database and spectral analysis can diagnose the contents of the sample. This analysis can happen in the cloud, and results communicated to the farmers almost instantaneously. There exist various similar technologies where a sample from a field, gets converted into digital information, is promptly analysed to provide accurate results, which then allows farmers to take decisions best suited to the land they farm on. The availability of satellite imagery, infrared imagery, and a myriad of remote inputs allow for more accurate weather forecasts, advance warnings on pest infestation and similar, and more. Instead of traditional homilies about temperature and rainfall events, the farmers now consult and share the advisories and forecasts of the same.

The term Rainfed agriculture is used to describe farming practices that rely on rainfall for water. It provides much of the food consumed by poor communities in developing countries. In India, about 52% of total net sown area comes under rainfed lands. Rainfed crops account for 48 per cent area under food crops and 68 per cent under non-food crops. India ranks first among the rainfed agricultural countries of the world in terms of both extent and value of produce. Due to population pressure on agricultural lands, the poverty is concentrated in rainfed regions. The climate in India’s rainfed regions is characterized by complex climatic deficiencies, manifested as water scarcity for rainfed crop production. The climate is largely semi-arid and dry sub-humid with a short (occasionally intense) wet season followed by long dry season. Rainfall is highly unreliable, both in time and space, with strong risks of dry spells at critical growth stages even during good rainfall years. The fluctuations are due to numerous factors affecting the monsoonal climate including the atmospheric circulation and strong links to El-Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean.

Rainfed areas in India are highly diverse, ranging from resource rich areas to resource-constrained areas. Some of the resource rich areas are highly productive and have experienced widespread adoption of technology. However, most of the areas are resource constrained and dry areas. In the resource constrained and dry areas, the farming is a survival mechanism rather than a growth oriented activity. Rainfed agriculture is practiced under a wide variety of soil type, agro-climatic and rainfall conditions ranging from 400 mm to 1600 mm per annum. Rainfed Crops are prone to breaks in the monsoon during the crop growth due to water stress. This water stress may be due to variability of rainfall, delay in sowing, diversity in crop management practice and variability of the soil type. The prolonged breaks can result in partial or complete failure of the crops.

With renewed interest in rainfed agriculture during 1970s, both the national (AICRPDA and CRIDA) and international institutions (ICRISAT) have studied several aspects of rainwater management. Recommendations have been made after their through testing both at the research Stations and on farmer’s fields. Initially these technologies were accepted by the farmers because of the pursuation by the Scientists and the incentives, but many of them are forgotten once the support is withdrawn. It is now time for us to examine whether the technologies themselves were weak or certain components were missing malfunctioning of the software may be due to a bug right from the beginning or it entered into the system at a later stage. It is also possible that we neglected certain critical inputs which became major constraints making the system defunct. Whatever the reason it should be identified and set right if the technology has to continue as tool for tackling the challenges of rainfed agriculture.

Main constraints of dry land agriculture to enhance the productivity are classified as follows:

Soil is a mixture of organic matter, minerals, gases, liquids, and organisms that together support life. Earth’s body of soil, called the pedosphere, has four important functions

Meteorology is defined as the branch of science concerned with the processes and phenomena of the atmosphere. It is also defined as the climate and weather of a region. The word meteorology is derived from two Greek words: Meteor and logus. Meteor means event occurring above the earth surface and logus means to study. Meteorology is science deals with the physics, chemistry and dynamics of atmosphere and also their direct and indirect effects upon the earth surface, oceans and thereby life in general.

Climatology: Climatology is scientifically defined as weather conditions averaged over a period of time. Different regions of the world have different characteristic climates which determine the crops of any region. Climatology is derived from Greek word ‘klima’ – place/zone or slope of the earth and logs is study. It discovers, describes and interprets the climate on the basis of causes and long term effects on variation in regional and global climate. Climatology is the science which studies average condition of weather or the state behavior of the atmosphere over a place or region for a long period of time.

Agrometeorology: Agrometeorology is the study of weather and use of weather and climate information to enhance crop production. Agrometeorology is defined as the branch of meteorology that deals with relationship between weather and climate on crop, livestock production and soil management.

Climatic classification is the method of identifying climatologically homogenous regions. The systematic study of climate and its analysis and processing, which is referred as climatology plays an important role in national weather, planning activities and decision making in human activities. Iso climatic regions are those regions which have same climatic conditions.

Specific objectives of climatic classification

To identify the climates for transfer of production technology developed at particular center.

To provide adequate indices of moisture availability for successful crop production in drylands.

To quantify the risk levels associated with production constrains to agriculture production.

Soil is a living, dynamic ecosystem that nurtures plants. Soil is responsible for Sustaining plant and animal life below and above the surface, Regulation water and fertilizer/pesticide runoff, Storing and cycling nutrients. But, the natural soil balance was disturbed by man due to agricultural activities to get food. The intensification of agriculture leads to soil erosion, which leads to creation of unproductive soils.

In agriculture, soil erosion refers to the wearing away of a field’s topsoil by the natural physical forces of water and wind or through forces associated with farming activities such as tillage. As a result of improper cultivation practices, deforestation and overgrazing aggravates the problem of soil erosion.

Globally soil erosion has reached a level that endangers the sustainable supply of food for the growing global population. It already threatens food production and ecosystem service delivery and therefore, there is a pressing need to address this threat. This is especially true in India where, in a total area of 328 million hectares (m ha), 121 m ha is undergoing soil degradation, 68% of which is attributed to water erosion. Water erosion rates range from 5 t ha^–1 yr^–1 in dense forest regions to rates in excess of 80 t ha^–1 yr^–1 where erosion is most severe, such as in the Shiwalik mountainous region. India’s average soil loss has been estimated to be 15t ha^–1 yr^–1; however, given the limited coverage of measurements, this should be treated with caution. In the light of the serious threat that soil erosion poses in the country, there is a pressing need for a systematic nationwide assessment of land degradation due to erosion using appropriate techniques. The area under ravine soil erosion is highest in UP to a tune of 12.30 lakh hectares and lowest in Maharashtra to a tune of 0.20 lakh hectares

Improving water use efficiency or enhancing agricultural water productivity is a critical response to growing water scarcity, including the need to leave enough water in rivers and lakes to sustain ecosystems and to meet the growing demands of cities and industries. Rainfall is the main source of water for the existence of life on the earth. Timely onset of rainfall and its distribution during the crop growing season determine the success of agriculture and food production. Unfortunately, the human life has hardly any control over nature and prevailance of delayed onset of monsoon and dryspells during different stages of crop growth are commonly observed in the dryland agriculture. Drought is a weather-related natural disaster which makes greater impact on food production and it reduces life expectancy and the economic performance of large regions or entire countries. Drought is a recurrent feature of the climate. It occurs in virtually all climatic zones, and its characteristics vary significantly among regions. Drought differs from aridity in that drought is temporary; aridity is permanent characteristic of regions with low rainfall. Drought is related to a deficiency of precipitation over an extended period of time, usually for a season or more. This deficiency results in a water shortage for some activity, group or environmental sector. Drought is also related to the timing of precipitation. Other climatic factors such as high temperature, high wind and low relative humidity are often associated with drought.

Successful crop production both in the rainfed and irrigated ecosystems depends on timely onset of monsoon, its distribution during the crop life cycle and collection of water in various storage structures viz; tanks, reservoirs and ground water table. It is therefore important that adequate supplies of water should be developed to sustain life. Development of water supplies should, however, be undertaken in such a way as to preserve the hydrological balance and the biological function of our ecosystems.

Consequently, the human endeavour in the development of water sources must be within the capacity of nature to replenish and to sustain. If this is not done, costly mistakes can occur with serious consequences. The application of innovative technologies and the improvement of indigenous ones should therefore include management of the water resources to ensure sustainability and to safeguard the source against pollution.

As land pressure rise, cities are growing vertical and in country side more forest area encroached and being used for agriculture. In India small farmers depends on monsoon where rainfall is from June to October and much of the precious water is soon lost as surface runoff. While irrigation may be the most obvious response to drought, it has proved costly and can only benefit a fortunate few. There is now increasing interest in the low cost alternative-generally referred to as “Rain Water Harvesting (RWH)”.

Water harvesting is the activity of direct collection of rainwater, which can be stored for direct use or can be recharged into the ground water. Water harvesting is the collection of runoff for productive purposes.

Rivers, lakes and ground water are secondary source of water. In present times, we depend entirely on such secondary source of water. In the process, it is forgotten that rain is the ultimate source that feeds all these secondary sources and remain ignorant of its value. Water harvesting is to understand the value of rain, and to make optimum use of rainwater at the place where it falls.

The occurrence of periods of water deficit for crop production, referred to as climatic drought, is commonly observed and leads to low water availability for crops. Besides climatic drought, crop water stress may also result from low levels of plant available water in the soil profile due either to the existence of physical barriers to water infiltration (e.g., surface sealing) or to soil chemical or physical limitations to plant root growth and root water uptake. Drought resulting from such factors will be referred to as edaphic drought since it is caused by soil specific conditions rather than by limited rainwater supply, and can occur even under conditions of sufficient and well-distributed rainfall. Finally, even where water is very scarce, particularly in the driest areas, a surprisingly small proportion of the available water is actually transpired by the crop. Non-productive losses include surface runoff, deep drainage, evaporation from the soil surface and deep cracks, and transpiration by weeds. Dry land farming is a system of crop cultivation depending on rainfall as the only source of moisture and the technologies refers to the cropping pattern/ rotation and agronomic practices adjusted and adopted in accordance with the moisture regime. The crops selected should have short duration, deep root system, erect leaves, moderate tillering and photosynthetically efficient.

Green Revolution has increased food grain production by four fold since 1950–51 with the adoption of HYVs, intense input use, extensive tillage, burning of residues and irrigation. The intense cultivation has lead to degradation of natural resource such as soil, water, vegetation etc. In this context, globally conservation agriculture (CA) has opened a new paradigm as it has potential for higher resource use efficiency, water productivity and climate change mitigation through its key principles. Total area and percentage of total area under no tillage practised as part of conservation agriculture in different continents is given in Table 92.

Climate change is looming large on the globe. Food security is one of the key issues that inevitably needs to be resolved under the specters of climate change, particularly in the fragile ecosystems. Never before in the history has Indian agriculture been as vulnerable and uncertainty ridden as it is today. A glimpse of the dynamics of Indian agriculture reveals that it has systematically deviated away from its base environment, the prop that nourishes all biological resources. Today’s agriculture is valued against the prices it fetches from the market, especially the global market. Its contribution to human health and welfare, ecological integrity, resilience of nature etc., are grossly neglected.

Agriculture in developing countries must undergo a significant transformation in order to meet the related challenges of achieving food security and responding to climate change. Projections based on population growth and food consumption patterns indicate that agricultural production will need to increase by at least 70 per cent to meet demands by 2050. Most estimates also indicate that climate change is likely to reduce agricultural productivity, production stability and incomes in some areas that already have high levels of food insecurity. Developing climate–smart agriculture is thus crucial to achieving future food security and climate change goals.

The production, processing and marketing of agricultural goods are central to food security and economic growth. Products derived from plants and animals include foods (such as cereals, vegetables, fruits, fish and meat), fibers (such as cotton, wool, hemp and silk), fuels (such as dung, charcoal and biofuels from crops and residues) and other raw materials (including medicines, building materials, resins, etc.,). Production has been achieved through a number of production systems which range from smallholder mixed cropping and livestock systems to intensive farming practices such as large monocultures and intensive livestock rearing. The sustainable intensification of production, especially in developing countries, can ensure food security and contribute to mitigating climate change by reducing deforestation and the encroachment of agriculture into natural ecosystems

Watershed is defined as a natural hydrological unit that covers a specific land surface area from which runoff passes through a common outlet or area with common drainage or outlet. In simple terms, it implies a catchments or drainage basin from which water drains towards a single channel. It may extend over a few acres only or may cover thousands of acres.

Watershed management is the integration of technology within the natural boundaries of a drainage area for optimum development of land, water and plant resources to meet the basic minimum needs of the people in a sustained manner.

It is also defined as the development and management of watershed resources in such a manner as to achieve optimum production without deterioration of resources base or disturbing the ecological balance. It is also termed as “Resource centered technology” since it helps in assessment, augmentation and optimal utilization of all natural resources viz., land, water and vegetation, it prevents deterioration of resources and at the same time ensures sustained productivity of land to meet basic needs of people.

A forest is a large area dominated by trees. Many definitions of forest are used throughout the world, incorporating factors such as tree density, tree height, land use, legal standing and ecological function. Although a forest is usually defined by the presence of trees, under many definitions an area completely lacking trees may still be considered a forest if it grew trees in the past, will grow trees in the future, or was legally designated as a forest regardless of vegetation type. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization, forests covered four billion hectares or approximately 30% of the world’s land area in 2006. Forests are the dominant terrestrial ecosystem of earth, and are distributed around the globe. Forests account for 75% of the gross primary production of the earth’s biosphere, and contain 80% of the earth’s plant biomass.

DEVELOPMENT OF MODERN FORESTRY

Systematic management of forests for a sustainable yield of timber began in Portugal in the 13th century when Afonso III, the king of Portugal planted the trees to prevent coastal erosion and soil degradation, and as a sustainable source for timber used in naval construction. His successor Dom Dinis continued the practice and the forest exists still today. Forest management also started in Germany in the 14th century and in Japan in the 16th century. The practice of establishing tree plantations in the British Isles was promoted by John Evelyn during second half of the 17th century.

During the late 19th and early 20th centuries, forest preservation programmes were established in British India, the United States and Europe. Sir Dietrich Brandis is considered the father of tropical forestry. He brought European concepts and practices to the tropical and semi-arid climate zones. The enactment and evolution of forest laws and binding regulations occurred in most Western nations in the 20th century in response to growing conservation concerns. Tropical forestry is a separate branch of forestry which deals mainly with equatorial forests that yield woods such as teak and mahogany. One of the applications of modern forestry is reforestation, in which trees are planted and tended in a given area.

Agroforestry is a new name for a set of old practices. The general concept of agroforestry is to integrate trees and agriculture so as to create a more diversified landscape, while providing the producers with new environmental and economic benefits. In other words, agroforestry is a method of farming that allows trees and shrubs to grow along with crops and/or livestock, therefore blending agriculture and forestry in the same production system. In fact, man’s association with forest is much older than with agriculture. First man was a food gatherer and hunter in forests. Then he realized that the seeds of the fruits he collected germinated, grew into plants and bore the fruits again and thus man started to cultivate foods. Man’s desire to live in a community created settled agriculture.

The pressure on the agricultural lands has increased manifolds due to the increasing population, expansion of urban area and the industrialization process. The environment has also been disturbed. Soil is losing its productivity and the biodiversity is threatened. Farming community is trying all means to increase the land productivity. Chemical fertilizers and pesticides are applied in higher proportion, causing environmental pollution hazards. Under all these circumstances agroforestry has shown that besides sustainable agriculture it can also help promote a better environment. Trees have always played an important role in mankind’s survival. This relatively young science known as agroforestry was brought from the realm of indigenous knowledge into the forefront of agricultural research four decades ago and was promoted widely as a sustainability-enhancing practice that combines the best attributes of forestry and agriculture.

Trees have been used in cropping systems since the beginning of agriculture. Throughout the world, at one period or another in its history, it has been the practice to cultivate tree species and agricultural crops in intimate combination. In the tropics, human beings underwent a transition from hunting/gathering to the use of domesticated plants and livestock. As a part of the process, they cut down trees, cleared the debris by burning and sowed crops in the ash-enriched soil. It was the ‘slash-and-burn’ agriculture, a primary forerunner of the present-day agroforestry and a practice that might have originated in the Neolithic period, around 7000 BC.

There are innumerable examples of traditional land-use practices involving combined production of trees and agricultural species on the same piece of land in many parts of the world. Trees were an integral part of these farming systems and they were deliberately retained on farmlands to support agriculture. These practices are now known as agroforestry. However, the ultimate objective of these practices was not tree production but food production.
