22.2. Main Features of Goods and Services Tax (GST)
The main features of Goods and Services Tax are as follows:
• Dual GST- India has implemented a dual GST system, consisting of two components: Central GST (CGST) and State GST (SGST). The central government collects CGST, while states and union territories collect SGST/UTGST on all supply transactions of goods and services. Following the 101st Constitutional Amendment, both the central government and union territories have the authority to levy taxes simultaneously on the supply of goods and services.
• Applicable on supply side- GST is applicable on “supply” of goods or services as against the old concept on the manufacturer of goods or on sale of goods or on provision of services.
• Destination based taxation- GST is based on the principle of destination-based consumption taxation as against the present principle of origin-based taxation.

Introduction

India is transforming from the phase of revolution to commercial mode of agriculture, a step ahead of self-sufficiency. It further evolves to reach a goal of self-reliant on agriculture and allied sector. The present phase demands several technological innovations, their application and implementation in the market. Meanwhile this phase needs due attention for handling the issues on conservation of natural resources, especially germplasm resource, biodiversity conservation, socio-cultural-economic values of our country, etc. The whole process requires good investment on research and development, various economic measures and implementation. It is only possible with vibrant governance and policy implementation of a Government. Already Government of India has taken several measures to transform agriculture. Recent analysis showed that Indian agriculture is the silent ever green revolution. Food production is kept pace with the growing population since independence. Further, it needs several innovations on technologies coupled with policy support to fill the demand. India is placed 49^th position in the world on innovations. Analysis suggested the huge potential for innovation due to its huge human capital, which perhaps need for the country like India to meet the food demand of 333 million tonnes by the year 2050. These innovations must be focussed for growth to efficiency, employment generation, food security to nutrition and health, shortage management to surplus management, input intensive to knowledge intensive agriculture, climate change and sustainability, production and producers, policy interventions, regulations and reforms. The Government emphasize usage of e-trading platforms to sell the farmers’ produce of their choice rather using mandis. This will enable contract farming and inter-state trade. However, major innovations and investment must be implemented on transportation, logistics, and digital access and payments to enable widespread prosperity. Thus, focus must be on the complete agricultural value chain. In fact, focus needed on value addition, rural infrastructure, logistics, warehousing, and quality certification of agriculture produce. India has greatest challenges to face in the future for food and nutritional security, adaptation and mitigation to climate change and sustainable use of essential and scared resources like water, land and energy.

Introduction 
The evolution of governance reforms in India must be situated within the broader global and domestic transitions in public administration. Inheriting its foundational structures from British colonial rule, India retained key institutional frameworks post-Independence in 1947, including the Parliament, Executive, Judiciary, and systems of law and order and revenue administration. Although these institutions provided a degree of continuity and stability, they gradually became mired in procedural rigidity, excessive centralization, and legal formalism. Mathur (2013) notes that the performance of the three core organs of governance, the legislature, executive, and judiciary, has drawn increasing public concern, particularly in their responsiveness to the rising aspirations of Indian citizens. In the early decades post-independence, India adopted a centralized, commandand- control model of economic and administrative governance. State officials wielded considerable discretion over the allocation of licenses, quotas, and permits, while the private sector remained underdeveloped and tightly regulated. This framework, while aligned with the nation-building ethos of the time, ultimately led to inefficiencies, corruption, and citizen disenchantment. The 1990s marked a watershed moment in India’s governance trajectory. With a balance-of-payments crisis and external pressures from international financial institutions such as the IMF and World Bank, India adopted neoliberal economic reforms centered on liberalization, privatization, and globalization (Ramesh Singh, 2013). These reforms fundamentally altered the state’s role from a direct provider of goods and services to a facilitator and regulator. A new governance discourse emerged, emphasizing accountability, transparency, efficiency, and citizen participation. This also marked the diffusion of New Public Management (NPM) ideas, which advocated for performance-based administration, managerial autonomy, and partnership with non-state actors. Simultaneously, the Tenth Five-Year Plan (2002–2007) explicitly identified governance as a key determinant of development outcomes, underscoring that economic growth could not be sustained without reforming the institutions

The rapid adoption of Large Language Models requires organizations to manage not only model performance but also ethical, regulatory, operational and lifecycle risks. This chapter presents an integrated perspective on governance, optimization and lifecycle management of LLMs. It examines governance principles based on fairness, accountability, transparency, human-centered design and responsible AI. Regulatory developments and policy gaps are considered alongside the challenges of auditing opaque models, controlling hallucinations and establishing accountability across organizations and jurisdictions. The chapter also explores optimization methods such as pruning, quantization, model compression, instruction tuning, LoRA and QLoRA to improve efficiency while maintaining useful capabilities. Lifecycle management extends from data collection and model design through training, evaluation, deployment, monitoring, updating and eventual decommissioning. Real-world cases demonstrate the importance of continuous testing, feedback, security controls and governance throughout the model lifecycle. Emerging threats, including prompt injection, data poisoning, misinformation, privacy leakage and malicious use, further emphasize the need for coordinated oversight. The chapter ultimately advocates a lifecycle-based governance framework combining technical optimization, regulatory compliance, ethical safeguards and continuous monitoring

Government

Government is a territorial based body that makes authoritative decisions (for which it has constitutional or legislative authority) that are binding on residents and businesses within its boundaries. It is the executive arm of the state. Government refers to actions carried out within a formal legal setting; governance involves all activities of government along with formal activities even outside a formal governmental setting, which are meant to achieve common goals.

Governance is the process of governing through which decisions are made that are intended to affect societal outcomes, including economic, social, environmental and other important outcomes. It encompasses the direct and indirect roles of formal institutions of local government and government hierarchies, as well as the roles of informal norms, networks, community organizations, and neighborhood associations in pursuing collective actions.

Introduction

The seventh-largest country in the world, India has a total size of 328 million hectares (mha). As of 2015–16, only 42.6% of the overall geographical area, or around 140 mha, is under cultivation, with nearly half of this land (156.4 mha) being arable. Despite accounting for only 16.5% of India’s GDP, the agricultural industry employs the greatest percentage of people (about 42.3% in 2019), including 71% of women working in rural regions.  

The Tenth Five Year Plan (GoI 2002), for 2002 through 2007, has put emphasis on natural resource management through rainwater harvesting, groundwater recharging measures and controlling groundwater exploitation, watershed development, treatment of waterlogged areas. With regard to application of agricultural inputs like fertilizer and pesticides, the Plan stated that factors such as imbalanced use of nitrogenous (N), phosphatic (P) and postassic (K) fertilisers, increased deficiency of micronutrients and decreased soil organic carbon would be addressed through a holistic agri-environmental approach stressing Integrated Plant Nutrient and Pest Management. Further, the Tenth Plan document recognizes organic farming as a ‘thrust area’ in the sustainable use and management of resources in agriculture.

The trajectory of Indian agriculture and its associated environmental problems has brought about recognition that future agricultural growth and productivity will have to occur simultaneously with environmental sustainability. The environmental challenges, especially in terms of land degradation and groundwater depletion, water logging and excessive use of chemical inputs are posing problems for the future of Indian agriculture. To address the problems, policies have laid emphasis on promoting sustainable agriculture including organic farming. Differential approaches and policy instruments, however, will be required to address these problems. The shift from input-intensive to sustainable, particularly organic farming is a difficult task as it involves a number of policy measures dealing with a variety of issues ranging from the transfer of information and technology to the development of markets. Another difficult task, and perhaps more difficult, relates to marginal and small farmers – which comprise a substantial part of Indian agriculture. Although these marginal and small farmers have been considered organic by ‘default’, severe resource constraints make a shift to the modern sense of organic farming prohibitive.

The Indian government has been undertaking measures to promote organic farming with the aim to improve soil fertility and help to double the farmers’ incomes by the year 2022. The Prime Minister had visited Sikkim—which is India’s first organic state—and encouraged other states to replicate the “Sikkim model”. Some of the policy initiatives to promote organic farming and exports include development of an organic regulation for exports by the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), removal of quantitative restriction on organic food exports, providing subsidies to farmers under the Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) in partnership with the state governments, and other schemes such as the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for North Eastern Region. Despite these initiatives, a recent survey-based study covering 418 organic farmers across different states of India suggests that a move to organic farming methods may not be that easy and organic farmers are not getting the expected premium price for their produce.

Introduction

Sustainable agriculture focuses on practices that ensure the long-term well being of the environment, society, and economy. In India, the government has instituted various policies and initiatives to encourage sustainable farming practices and enhance farmers' income. Embracing sustainability is crucial for making agriculture both profitable and environmentally friendly for future generations, and technology emerges as the key enabler for achieving this goal. Technological advancements empower farmers to make informed decisions regarding optimal planting and harvesting times, as well as the judicious use of water and fertilisers. This leads to reduced waste, increased crop yields, and ultimately higher profits for farmers. Additionally, technology plays a significant role in mechanisation, encompassing the use of modern agricultural implements that multitask while minimising soil impact (McFadden et al., 2023). Addressing major challenges such as crop residue management through environmentally friendly technological methods not only enhances efficiency and productivity but also reduces the physical labor required, transforming farming into a less strenuous occupation.

Abstract
Government initiatives to boost agricultural exports are critical for driving economic growth, promoting rural development and enhancing food security. This paper provides an overview of the importance of such initiatives from various perspectives including economic growth, rural development, trade balance, food security, foreign investment, global competitiveness and environmental sustainability. It examines the strategic steps involved in government efforts, including policy formulation, market research, product development, infrastructure development, trade facilitation, export promotion, financial support, policy advocacy and monitoring and evaluation. Furthermore, the paper highlights common government initiatives implemented worldwide to enhance agricultural exports, such as trade agreements and negotiations, export promotion programs, market diversification efforts, quality and safety standards compliance, infrastructure development, financial support mechanisms, research and development investments, branding and certification promotion, sustainability and environmental stewardship and capacity building and training. Additionally, the advantages of government initiatives in boosting agricultural exports are discussed, including expanded market access, increased competitiveness, market diversification, better quality and safety standards, infrastructure development and financial support. However, the paper also acknowledges several limitations of these initiatives, including policy inconsistency, bureaucratic red tape, lack of coordination, limited access to finance, infrastructure deficiencies, market access barriers, environmental and social concerns and dependency on external factors.

Government role in marketing of milk

Ever since independence the dairy sector in India has been regulated. The government projects and programmes in place for enhancing dairy development include subsidies for developing infrastructure for milk processing and testing. The Clean Milk Production Programme is a centrally sponsored scheme that is being implemented by the State Department of Animal Husbandry, Dairying and Fisheries with several objectives: i) the creation and strengthening of necessary infrastructure for the production of quality milk and milk products at the farm level up to the points of consumption; ii) improvement of milking techniques; and iii) training to enhance awareness on the importance of hygienic milk production. Several other rural development initiatives support dairying, such as through the District Rural Development Agency and women’s self help groups. An area of government support that has not been capitalized on so far is the investment in promoting the nutritional aspects of milk, particularly pasteurized milk versus loose milk.

The successful transformation of agriculture through artificial intelligence and digital technologies requires supportive policies, institutions, infrastructure, and farmer-oriented programmes. This chapter examines the role of government policies and institutional support in promoting smart farming and digital agricultural innovation. Effective policies can facilitate investment in research and development, digital infrastructure, farmer training, technology access, rural connectivity, data governance, and sustainable agricultural practices. Institutional mechanisms are particularly important for overcoming barriers faced by smallholder farmers, including high technology costs, limited digital literacy, and inadequate infrastructure. The chapter emphasizes collaboration among governments, research institutions, universities, private enterprises, and farming communities to promote inclusive technology adoption, strengthen resilience, and achieve sustainable food security.

With aquaculture recognized as a key contributor to food security, rural income, and exports, the Indian government has rolled out multiple schemes and policies aimed at supporting sustainable feed production and maintaining quality standards. Entities like the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, NFDB, and state fisheries departments provide strategic policy direction, financial incentives, and skill-building programs to benefit both feed manufacturers and fish farmers. Subsidies for establishing feed mills, lowering input costs, and funding research contribute to reducing production expenses and promoting the adoption of science-based feeding techniques. Research institutions under ICAR, such as ICAR-CIFE, ICAR-CIFA, and ICAR-CIBA, are key players in advancing feed-related technologies. They work on developing improved feed formulations, identifying sustainable protein alternatives, and innovating feed processing methods. These institutions also conduct extensive training and extension activities to transfer technologies to the field. FSSAI ensures that feed quality and safety benchmarks are met, safeguarding the health of both aquatic species and end consumers.

Small-scale enterprises, including micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), play a vital role in the economy by contributing to employment, innovation, and poverty reduction. Similarly, women entrepreneurship offers significant potential for promoting inclusive growth, tapping into underutilized talent, and advancing gender equality in business leadership.

Small-scale enterprises often face challenges like limited access to funding, poor infrastructure, regulatory barriers, and market limitations. Women entrepreneurs, on the other hand, encounter additional obstacles such as socio cultural norms, limited access to resources, and gender biases in the business world. Flagship schemes such as Paramparagat Krishi Vikas Yojana (PKVY) and Bharatiya Prakritik Krishi Paddhati (BPKP) promote integrated, low-input farming systems by offering financial aid, farmer training, and implementation through cluster-based models. These schemes often incorporate livestock integration and development of natural feed resources.
Departments under the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying (DAHD), and ICAR institutions actively encourage fodder production, feed preservation, and development of indigenous feed mixtures through research, on-ground trials, and skill-building programs. For instance, the National Livestock Mission (NLM) aids in fodder seed distribution, establishment of silage facilities, and training on scientifically sound yet natural feeding techniques. Institutions like Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs) and State Agricultural Universities (SAUs) contribute through extension services, field demonstrations, and technical advice on formulating natural feed, utilizing medicinal plants, and conserving feed on-farm.
In recent developments, the government has promoted Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) and Self-Help Groups (SHGs) to facilitate collective feed processing, shared resource use, and marketing of value-added products like organic milk and free-range poultry. Similarly, the Rashtriya Gokul Mission supports the improvement and conservation of native cattle breeds better suited for natural feeding systems.

Successful policies include the National Food Security Act in India, which reduced stunting and improved dietary diversity. ICAR MODELS, NFDB/PMMSY SCHEMES FOR IFF
ICAR’s Models for Integrated Fish Farming
The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) has played a leading role in advancing Integrated fish farming (IFF) models that effectively combine aquaculture with agriculture and animal husbandry. These models aim to improve resource efficiency, boost overall farm productivity, and ensure sustainable practices.
• Rice–Fish–Duck System (ICAR-NRRI, Cuttack): This model combines paddy cultivation with fish and duck rearing. Ducks act as natural weed and pest controllers while fertilizing the fields with their droppings. Fish support nutrient cycling and also help manage weeds. The system enhances rice yield, produces fish and duck meat/eggs, and optimizes water and land use.
• Fish–Makhana–Water Chestnut System (ICAR-RCER, Patna): Widely adopted in Bihar, this model integrates fish farming with the cultivation of makhana (fox nut) and water chestnut. The aquatic crops provide natural habitat and supplemental feed for fish. This integration improves pond utilization and generates multiple income streams for farmers.

Introduction

Small and medium-sized industrial units, or small scale industrial (SSI) units, are generally referred to as SMEs, according to the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. The MSMED Act of 2006, which was updated in 2020, serves as the foundation for the definition of SMEs in India.

• Micro manufacturing and services units: Up to Rs. 1 crore in investments and up to Rs. 5 crore in revenue.

• Small manufacturing and services units: Up to Rs. 10 crore in investments and up to Rs. 50 crore in revenue.

• Medium manufacturing and services units: Up to Rs. 50 crore in investments and up to Rs. 250 crore in revenue.

Small and Medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) constitute the backbone of the global economy. SMEs not only provide major contributions to national GDPs, but they also play an important role in job creation, innovation, and regional development. In India, SMEs account for about 30% of the country’s GDP and employ over 110 million people, making them an important part of the economic structure.(FICCI,2023).

Government Programmes for Agribusiness

Both the central and state governments have devised programmes to luve the entrepreneurs for setting up agribusiness in India. They may be classified as programmes falling under small-scale industries, Khadi and village industries, small and medium industries, large industries based on the finance required for investment. Apart from these many efforts were taken especially after signing, the WTO agreement to harness the export market. They include conversion of Export Processing Zones (EPZ) into Special Economic Zones (SEZ), establishment of Agri-export zones for which government is attracting private investors to make investment in infrastructure development of cold storage chains, improvement in road, rail, sea and air transport systems.

The Ministry of Small Scale Industries & Agro and Rural Industries designs and implements the policies through its field organizations for promotion and growth of small and tiny enterprises, including the coir industries.

The Ministry also coordinates with other Ministries/ Departments on behalf the Small Scale Industries (SSI) sector.

The implementation of policies and various programmes/schemes for providing infrastructure and support services to small enterprises is undertaken through its attached office, namely the Small Industry Development Organization (SIDO), statutory bodies/other organizations likely Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC) & Coir Board a Public Sector Undertaking -National Small Industries Corporation (NSIC) and three training institutes -National Institute of Small Industry Extension Training (NISIET), Hyderabad, National Institute for Entrepreneurship and Small Business Development (NIESBUD), New Delhi and Indian Institute of Entrepreneurship (IIE), Guwahati.

Rural development is transforming the lives of the rural people by creating awareness and mobilizing the people for self-help and pastoral help. Rural development is not new in India, where more than 70% of the people live in villages, their primary source of livelihood being agriculture, animal husbandry etc. Any area’s development initially occurs when changes happen in the home and family. Rural development focuses on the holistic development of the rural population by helping them to recognize their needs & interests and guiding them to meet them. This would result in personal, social, economic, and spiritual development.

The Government of India has accorded ‘high priority’ status to the food processing industry. The Ministry of Food Processing Industries (MOFPI) has been set up as a nodal agency for formulation and implementation of the policies and plans for the food processing industries.

With an overall objective of positioning India as the ‘Food Basket’ to the world, several initiatives have been undertaken with the objective of promoting investments, innovation and bringing best practices. This vision is in line with the ‘Make in India’ initiative of the Government (CII, 2019).

5.1. Policy Interventions (MOFPI, 2019)

5.1.1. Infrastructure Development

Fragmented, inadequate, and inefficient infrastructure along the supply chain has been identified as one of major factor inhibiting growth of food processing sector. As adequate investment for infrastructure has not been forthcoming from private sector, government will continue to assist, participate and incentivize creation of supply chain infrastructure for food processing sector.

Government schemes, policies, and training initiatives serve as vital enablers for the expansion of natural beekeeping, offering essential financial, technical, and institutional support to farmers and rural entrepreneurs. These interventions are designed to enhance productivity, sustainability, and economic resilience, particularly among smallholders, tribal communities, and women.

Subsidies and grant-based programs help reduce entry barriers by covering costs related to indigenous and modern hive types, protective gear, and honey processing equipment. This financial assistance empowers marginal farmers to embrace beekeeping while supporting certification and branding efforts that connect them with higher-value markets.

Beekeeping is now officially recognized within national and state-level agricultural policy as a key allied activity that promotes biodiversity and strengthens rural livelihoods. These policies often integrate natural beekeeping within wider organic farming frameworks and support food safety regulations, quality assurance, and export facilitation.

Government-led training programs—delivered through agricultural universities, extension networks, and specialist institutions—equip beekeepers with knowledge on colony management, disease control, and sustainable harvesting. These sessions emphasize natural methods that avoid synthetic inputs, safeguarding both pollinator health and ecological integrity.

India is a leading producer and exporter of onion, but its productivity, market stability and post-harvest efficiency remain constrained. Farmers face fragmented holdings, climate uncertainty, price fluctuations, inadequate storage, technological gaps and significant post-harvest losses. This chapter reviews government programmes and policies related to financial support, irrigation, infrastructure, crop insurance, market access, farmer organizations, storage, processing and agricultural research. It also discusses export-quality requirements, grading, packaging and pesticide-residue standards. Research priorities include stress-resistant varieties and hybrids, drip irrigation, fertigation, growth regulation, sprout control and non-thermal storage treatments. Coordinated policies and technological dissemination can improve farmer income, productivity, quality and market resilience.

1. INTRODUCTION

Grading and packing of fruits ensure the safe transportation from the farm to the storage and consumer centre, while reducing the damage during transportation. The properly graded fruits should be packed in such a way that they do not collide with each other during transportation. Throughout the entire handling system, packaging can be both an aid and hindrance to obtaining maximum storage life and quality. Before the fruit is packed in a suitable container/package it is graded according to the standard grades accepted in the market. Packaging is one of the important components after grading during the handling of fruits. Packaging is meant to protect the commodity by immobilizing and cushioning it, but temperature management can be made more difficult if packing material block ventilation holes. Packing material can act as vapour barriers and helps in maintaining higher relative humidity within the package. Packaging material such as trays, cups, wraps, liners and pads may be added to help immobilize the produce. A wide variety of containers such as wooden boxes, plastic crates, corrugated fiberboard boxes are important package used in the transportation and distribution of fruits in most of the developing countries.

9.1 Introduction

Many cultures throughout the world see the egg as nature’s perfect meal. Many other kinds of animals lay eggs, yet the vast majority of people eat chicken eggs. There are a number of reasons why the quality of an egg matters today. Grading eggs is so essential. Quality, size, shape, weight, and other characteristics are all taken into account while sorting eggs for grading. To put it simply, food quality refers to the traits of a product that determine whether or not it is accepted by the target audience. Egg quality is based on both industry standards and consumer expectations. Considerations from the outside include egg shell composition, hue, form, and feel. Air cells, egg white, egg yolk, etc., are all examples of internal quality.

Introduction

Fruit and vegetable development starts with formation of an edible part fruit setting, seedling emergence, tuber development and ends with loss of edible character, or spoilage through physiological deterioration, development of fibrous character or spoilage through microbiological intervention . The state of maturity of a fresh horticultural commodity is therefore is a continuum process along the development scale. The term mature implies that point in the development scale when the horticultural commodity in the state that is ready to use (consume, process, store). For the packing house, maturity means suitability for storage followed by sufficient shelf life to assure profitable supply to markets. On the other hand, the retail consumer may value colour, flavour, or textural attributes. This implies that maturity and an appropriate compromise must be achieved through the marketing process.

Quality, on the other hand, relates to the degree of the satisfaction that the consumer or customer is likely to obtain through the use of mature commodity. Maturity and quality are interrelated with market expectations or requirements. These expectations or requirements are expressed through regulations or guidelines of grower groups or through legislative authority expressed as quality standards or grades and enforced through inspection agencies associated with government departments.

Abstract

Grains in present context are food grains. The PFA Act includes cereals, millets, and pulses in food grains. At times, seeds of certain oilseeds like soybean are also referred to in the discussion of food grains. Grains have been cultivated for thousands of years. We have Grain Standards as established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO), which are considered as International Standards. Another source is Codex Alimentarius Commission (Codex) under the aegis of FAO (UN), which operates a Committee to formulate standards that are referred to as Codex Standards. Many countries have a National Standards Institution, which develops National Standards for their main grain crops and other commodities and issues specifications along with methods of testing and analysis. Several countries, which are in developing status, adopt or modify international standards into their national system. The Grain Standards have been evolved and established for a variety of purposes but primarily to grade produce in agricultural marketing largely to facilitate the movement of grain, provide both sellers and buyers with guidelines to support financial transactions, and ensure that the produce will meet up with end-use requirements, or, increasingly to protect the consumers.

This chapter introduces grading and standardization as mechanisms for converting biological variation in eggs into defined commercial specifications. It examines grade factors, quality classes, egg sizing and weight classification, and Indian standards including AGMARK and BIS. International approaches such as Codex, USDA and EU frameworks are compared. The chapter also describes automated grading equipment, candling, packing systems and packaging requirements. Particular attention is given to Indian egg-marketing channels, price behaviour, cold-chain requirements and consumer perception.

Grading and Standardization

Grading and standardization is marketing function which facilitates the movement of produce. Grading standards for commodities are laid down first & then the commodities are sorted out according to the accepted standards.
Grading means grouping the products into different classes (which posses the same characteristics) in accordance with the predetermined standards. Grading as the division of products into/commodities into classes made up of units possessing similar characteristics of size and quantity. Grading follows standardization. It is a sub function of standardization.

Grafting is a horticultural technique. It is used commercially for many woody plants and some herbaceous plants. The purposes of grafting include asexual propagation, obtaining resistance to soil borne diseases, nematodes and unfavorable conditions, and improving fruit quality. Although there are advantages to grafting, graft incompatibility often prevents its practical use. Graft incompatibility occurs when the combination of scion and rootstock is inappropriate. The enormous range of genotype varieties used in grafting results in a wide range of physiological, biochemical and anatomical interactions between graft partners. Therefore, the causes and mechanisms of graft incompatibility vary according to graft combinations. Garner (1979) defined graft incompatibility as the failure to unite into a strong union, the failure to grow in a healthy manner, or premature death, when such failures could be attributed to differences between rootstock and scion.
 
The purpose of this review is to understand graft incompatibility as an aid to solving graft incompatibility problems. The symptoms and types of graft incompatibility are described, the causes and mechanisms of graft incompatibility are explored, and directions for future research are identified.

Underutilized crops can be found in many different agricultural ecosystems, but they are mainly grown by small landholders in the marginal areas especially in hill agriculture. Some crops remain underutilized because they are in some way not competitive with other species in the same agricultural environment. They are usually characterized by having local importance in consumption and production systems, requiring relatively low inputs, adapting to specific agro-ecological niches, receiving scarce attention by national agricultural and biodiversity conservation efforts, mainly consisting of local types or landraces, and being cultivated with indigenous knowledge. Many underutilized species are adapted to low-input agriculture and depended on by a large number of people in marginal areas in hill agriculture of developing countries.

This chapter attempts to provide a detail picture of one such underutilized crop i.e. Grain Amaranth. In an effort to explain the decrease in grain amaranth cultivation, fanciful myths have arisen. The mystery is especially intriguing when one considers that maize, with which amaranth co-evolved, was selected and developed into a major world crop. The small seed size of amaranth may have been a partial cause for the reduction in amaranth cultivation. A small seeded crop, such as amaranth, requires greater attention to detail in the early parts of the growing season than does a larger seeded crop, such as maize.

This chapter discussed all the factors related to its cultivation, the constraints in the production and importance of grain amaranth in the economy of hill agriculture etc.

Abstract
 
Grains are usually harvested above 20% (wb) moisture level and they are prone to microbial attack at high moisture level. In order to avoid both qualitative and quantitative losses that arise from microbial growth, grains are usually dried to safe moisture level. The safe storage moisture content may vary from 8-16% (wb), depending upon the grain and climate type. Therefore, drying is a necessary step in preventing these losses. Drying also reduces the bulk weight of the materials, thus easing transportation and storage. Drying can occur in thin layer or in deep bed. Different drying theories are proposed to characterize these drying processes. Theoretical as well empirical drying equations have been developed.

Grain engorgement syndrome, also known as grain overload, lactic acidosis, ruminal acidosis, or carbohydrate overload, is a metabolic condition primarily affecting ruminant animals such as cattle, buffalo, sheep, and goats. It occurs when animals consume excessive amounts of readily fermentable carbohydrates, commonly found in grains such as wheat, barley, and corn, or feed concentrates. The sudden overload leads to rapid fermentation in the rumen, causing a cascade of physiological disturbances that can be lifethreatening if not promptly managed.
This condition is of significant importance in livestock farming, particularly where intensive feeding systems, grain supplementation, or unintentional access to stored grains occurs. Proper understanding of the pathophysiology, clinical signs, diagnosis, and nutritional management is crucial for preventing mortality and economic losses in affected herds.
Pathophysiology
Ruminants rely on a microbial ecosystem in their rumen to digest fibre and carbohydrates. The rumen contains a diverse population of bacteria, protozoa, and fungi that ferment ingested feed, producing volatile fatty acids (VFAs) such as acetate, propionate, and butyrate. These VFAs provide energy to the animal. When ruminants ingest a sudden excess of high-starch grains or other fermentable carbohydrates, the balance of the rumen ecosystem is disrupted:
Rapid fermentation: The high starch content is rapidly fermented by grampositive bacteria such as Streptococcus bovis. This leads to a sudden and excessive production of lactic acid.

Their drought tolerance, heat resistance, and ability to fix atmospheric nitrogen make them well-suited to withstand climate stress. Legumes exhibit mechanisms such as deep root systems, efficient water use, and adaptability to diverse environmental conditions, contributing to their robustness in the face of climate variability. To bolster the role of grain legumes in climate-resilient agriculture, climate-smart practices and technological advancements are essential. These include optimizing planting strategies, adopting water-efficient methods, and breeding for improved resilience traits. Introduction
Grain legumes or pulses are a group of crops which belong to family Fabaceae, are primarily grown for their edible seeds. The common examples of grain legumes include: bean (Phaseolus spp.), lentil (Lens culinaris), chickpea (Cicer arietinum), pea (Pisum sativum), soybean (Glycine max), lupin (Lupinus spp.), broad bean (Vicia faba), igeon pea (Cajanus cajan), grass pea (Lathyrus sativus), black gram (Vigna mungo), green gram (Vigna radiata). Grain legumes can play a significant role to address future global food security, environmental sustainability, and nutritional needs. Pulses are the second most important food crop after cereals and an important source of proteins, vitamins, and minerals. Pulses are popularly known as “Poor man’s meat” and “Rich man’s vegetable”. Pulses contain a high amount of protein (20-25%), which is almost double and triple of the protein content of wheat and rice, respectively and so can contribute significantly to the nutritional security of the country. Besides, they may serve the purpose of protein rich fodder and good quality green manure crop. Pulses can thrive well in low and marginal land with less external inputs. They act as erosion resisting crops because of its deep tap root
system, leafy growth, and close spacing. Pulses can also be grown as paira crop or inter-crop in different growing situations. Being a leguminous crop, it can fix atmospheric nitrogen with the help of its root nodules, resulting in low requirement of external fertilizer. Keeping the importance of pulses in mind, United Nation’s Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) also declared 2016 as the ‘International Year of Pulses’.

3.1 Introduction

The production of food grains in India is around 200 million tonnes and most of the grains are converted to primary products after primary processing such as threshing, dehulling, de-branning. Some of the grains are converted to secondary products such as flour or grits. The yields of primary and secondary products range between 65-80% indicating a wastage of 20-35%. These wastes lead to unclean surroundings and air pollution due to fine dust. Hence, proper waste management/utilization of food grain processing industries has become a societal need for a clean environment.

The term ‘waste’ has different meanings to different people. It can be retractions from the main process or less utilizable by-products or undesirable waste material depending on the commodity. All food-processing industries generate wastes and create problems for its management. The best way the food processing industry can treat its waste is to avoid producing it. Much of the waste now being produced or generated in some food processing plants can become a managed resource for producing economic credits. In fact, waste utilization is one of the world’s prominent industries and its activities cut across the normal divisions into which industries are placed. Similarly, there will be wastes from agriculture, animal and meat industries, textile, rubber etc. Even the local governmental activities that collect and dispose the household wastes become apparent in terms of the huge size of it.

Abstract

Grain size distribution patterns of five rivers – Hooghly, Bhagirathi, Damodar, Ajoy and the Usri, were critically analyzed and compared with three model distributions: log-normal, log-hyperbolic and log-skew-Laplace. The log-normal and log-skew-Laplace are the limiting distributions of log-hyperbolic family. The Hooghly-Bhagirathi river system from where the sand samples were collected is tidal in nature whereas the other three rivers are non-tidal. The tidal effect on grain size distribution patterns was also studied. Bed load samples were collected from the foreset of different bedform sizes. A total number of 126 sediment samples were collected from different sections of the rivers under study.

It is observed that the grain size distribution pattern of the tidal stretch of the Hooghly-Bhagirathi river system has a tendency of attaining a log-skew-Laplace distribution model whereas the other three non-tidal river sediments show a clear log-normal distribution pattern as a best-fit statistical model.

A possible reason has been attributed. During prolonged transport of bed material, the coarser and finer sediments are separated in the following manner: coarser sediments are buried below the advancing ripple fronts whereas the finer sediments are transported further downstream as suspension load. As a result, sediments of a narrow range of size classes are active in the distribution pattern giving rise to symmetric and unimodal distribution patterns which are the main criteria of log-normality. On the other hand, due to the upstream and downstream movement during sediment transportation in tidal reaches, the same sediments are constantly reworked and the segregation of different size fractions is hindered causing a log-skew-Laplace distribution pattern.

Food is a vital requirement for all living beings, as it provides the essential nutrients necessary for growth, development, and recovery. Humans depend on both plants and animals for nourishment, which we acquire through agricultural practices and animal farming. With the increasing global demand for food, crop yields have risen, which has led to a greater reliance on warehouses for grain storage. However, merely increasing food production is insufficient to combat hunger and malnutrition, as food security also heavily depends on ensuring that food is accessible to everyone. Crops, however, are exposed to various threats, such as pests, weeds, and diseases, which can drastically reduce yields if not managed adequately.
A significant issue is storage losses, which are driven by both biological elements (such as fungi, insects, and rodents) and environmental factors (such as unsuitable storage conditions or extreme temperatures). These losses result in various negative consequences, including:
• Reduced food quality
• Lower seed germination rates
• Loss of weight in crops
• Discolored produce
These problems can impede the marketing of harvested crops, leading to unsold goods and considerable losses for farmers and distributors.
To reduce these losses, it’s crucial to adopt proper measures like efficient treatments and continuous monitoring of storage conditions. Grains should be stored in environments that prevent deterioration. This can be achieved by ensuring thorough cleaning before storage, drying grains thoroughly (both under the sun and in the shade), and taking steps to control pests, including fumigation.

• Procurement of seed cocoons
Within the cocoon market, the government can buy the necessary number of multivoltine cocoons from the seed cocoon market. The purpose of a grainage is to produce attractive seeds. This method involves unique procedures, such as the manufacture of silkworm seeds for the market. Half of the bivoltine cocoons should also be obtained from bivoltine cocoon marketplaces to guide hybrid seeds.
• The seed cocoons are packed
Loosely in perforated packing containers or bamboo baskets in small portions and are transported all through cooler hours of the day. Initially the seed cocoons arriving on the grainages are subjected to inflexible selection. In selection only sound and uniform cocoons conforming to the characteristics of the race are selected and defective cocoons and so forth., are rejected. Strengthen detection of pebrine disease, if any before the commencement of operation of each batch enables in keeping off excellent loss to the grainages.

15.1 Fondant

The word fondant is said to come from the French verb fondre to dissolve. Confectionery fondants are normally made by boiling a sugar and glucose syrup in order to concentrate it before the mixture is cooled with beating to produce fine sucrose crystals. Some fondants used in baking are made by mixing icing sugar with a sucrose and glucose mixture. The icing sugar has a small particle size because it has been milled whereas the sucrose in a crystallised fondant has small crystals. It is possible to make a fondant using dextrose instead of sucrose. Crystalline dextrose has a positive heat of solution, i.e. heat is absorbed, and this produces a marked cooling effect which goes well with a peppermint flavour, but one which is not particularly attractive economically, but they can be in some other countries.

Cereals and pulses are the staple food in India, thus it has to be stored by producers in their homes and by traders and government agencies. Variations in the season i.e., warm and high humidity weather is highly conducive to proper development and rapid multiplication of storage insect pests. Almost all insect pests of stored grains have a remarkably high rate of multiplication and within one season, they may destroy 9-10% of the grains and contaminate the rest with undesirable odors and flavors. The type of insects infesting grains vary and include weevils, moths and beetles. Apart from this it is necessary to control or kill egg, larval, pupal and adult stages of the insect. After proper cleaning and drying the produce is stored where damage can be caused due to cross-infestation or infestation already left in the produce. Grains are stored in different types of receptacles and to protect it, different protectants are being used since from the early days. The success in the use of these protectants (organic, inorganic or inert) depends upon the effect on the grain, killing of the insects, practicability, period of storage and lastly the physical and chemical state of treated seeds.

1. Inert dusts

Inert dusts are fine powders chemically inactive but cause considerable insecticidal activity by mechanical abrassing and physical absorption of moisture proofing layers of insect integument. The use of inert dust was initiated sometimes during World War II. Some common inert dusts are ashes, clays, gypsum, lime, magnesite, Nakki, silica, talk, phosphates, diatomaceous earth. It was reported that though most of the dust proved effective and convenient to use but it is difficult to remove it and clean as it goes inside the infested and damaged grains. The dust can only kill larvae and adults moving in between the grains. Once any stage of insects entered inside the grain, it is beyond the reach of the dust.

• All above ground parts of the plant are infected.
• Round or elongated lesions, bearing irregularly depressed brown spot and surrounded by a brownish red margin on leaf.
• Similar spots may appear on the stem and pods.
• Spots on the stem and pods have pycnidia arranged in concentric circles as minute black dots.
• When the lesions girdle the stem, the portion above the point of attack rapidly dies.
• If the main stem is girdles at the collar region, the whole plant dies (Fig.1).

1. Bacteroides, Dichelobacter and Fusobacterium are major gram negative anaerobes isolated from human and animals. Other gram negative anaerobes are listed below (Table-1).

       2.   They are tolerant to oxygen in comparison to strict anaerobes. They do not die after oxygen exposure

       3.         They naturally inhabit the intestine and mucosal surfaces of human and animals. Majority of them are opportunistic pathogens. Often they cause mixed bacterial infection along with aerobes. Aerobes remove oxygen and create an anaerobic condition favourable for their growth. Aerobes may also supply other growth requirements. For e.g. Porphyromonas asaccharolytica requires vitamin K for its growth, supplied by another bacterium, not the host.

1. Downy mildew
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Symptoms appear on all aerial and tender parts of the vine.
• Irregular, yellowish, translucent spots on the upper surface of the leaves.
• Correspondingly on the lower surface, dirty white, powdery growth of fungus appears.
• Affected leaves become, yellow and brown and gets dried due to necrosis
• Premature defoliation.
• Dwarfing of tender shoots.
• Infected leaves, shoots and tendrils are covered by whitish growth of the fungus.
• White growth of fungus on berries which subsequently becomes leathery and shrivels. Infected berries turn hard, bluish green and then brown.
• Later infection of berries results in soft rot symptoms. Normally, the fully grown or maturing berries do not contact fresh infection as stomata turn non-functional.
• No cracking of the skin of the berries (Fig.1). 

Grape cultivation is one of the most remunerative farming enterprises in India. Considered the “Food of Gods” by the ancients, the little juicy ball holds more mysteries than we can think of. Classified by biologists as a ‘true’ berry, it has fleshy insides all the way to the tiny seed, making it a strong powerhouse of nutrition and energy. As one of nature’s richest source of antioxidants, the grape is priceless in its nutritional value. In fact many dieticians believe that it helps lower the incidence of two of the deadliest diseases in the urban world- coronary disease and cancer. In its juice form, the grape is known to cleanse the liver and remove excess uric acid from the body. One interesting but little known fact is that grape seeds are healthier than the fruit itself. They contain powerful antioxidants serving to prevent premature ageing, disease and decay. Grapes, one of the most delicious fruits, are rich sources of vitamins A, C, and B6. In addition to this they contain essential minerals like potassium, calcium, iron, phosphorus and magnesium.

Grapevine stem girdler:  Sthenias grisator : Cerambycidae

This is a pest that can also survive on mango, rose, cocoa, coffee, almond, and mulberry. The ovipositing adult causes wilting of branches and then the entire vine. Adults are medium-sized, grey coloured beetles with a white spot at the center of each elytron. They are active at night.

Eggs are deposited in clusters of 2-4, underneath loose bark of girdled branches. Eggs are oval and enveloped in a white parchment like covering. Adults emerge out and start ovipositing individual eggs at a point in the vine in a circular fashion so that the vine dries up above this point. Egg period takes about 8 days. The grub has dark brown head and mouth has a pair of prominent mandibles, each with two teeth. The grub continues its life as a semi saprophyte and pupates in the same tunnel. A single generation can occupy one year.

Introduction: Grape is an important sub-tropical fruit crop in India. The plant of Vitaceae family divided into two important groups first is Euvitis which have 60 species; some important species which are commercially grown are i.e. Vitis vinifera, Vitis raperia, Vitis rupestris, Vitis labrausca and Vitis champini. Second group is Muscadiana and in this group the important crops are Muscadiana rotendifolia, Muscadiana popenoii and Muscadiana munsoniana. The chromosome number of this group is 2n = 40.
