Introduction
Bakery industry is one of the largest segments in the food processing sector in India. The bakery industry offers huge opportunities for growth, innovation, and job generation. This industry is separated into three categories such as bread, biscuits, cakes and pastries. The global bakery industry reached a market value of Rs. 42.07 lakh crore in 2024 and around 1.2 lakh crore from the Indian market as India is the second largest producer of biscuits after the USA. Thus, India is a key player internationally and with the entrepreneurial spirit of Indian companies and individuals. Thus, bakery sector is one of the most sustainable business opportunities. Changing consumer habits, increased urbanization, improved standards of living, convenience needs of dual income families and lifestyle are shaping the bakery industry in India. Part of a global trend, there is greater demand for healthier products and alternatives, particularly when it comes to bakery products which are now more commonly consumed daily as compared to being considered as a treat in the olden days. With high consumption rates, consumers are demanding healthy options in bakery products seeking for gluten-free products or goods made with alternative ingredients such as multigrain or whole-wheat flour. Other than healthier options, most of the youths and children are demanding for new flavours, Fibre dense products and rich experiences, making diversified innovations. The industry is consolidating this demand by strengthening bakery products with the aim of satisfying a rapidly growing appetite and creating awareness among consumers with health concepts and nutritional value. While there is a demand and appetite for bakery products in both urban and rural areas, and thus, recently the bakery segment has increasingly matured to a great extent. The industry is generally divided into organised and unorganised, with more than 2,000 organised or semi-organised bakeries and more than 1,000,000 unorganised bakeries. However, the Indian bakery industry faces certain challenges. Operational efficiency is a major issue in the industry, as is the lack of technology and skilled workers. Bakery products due to high nutrient value and affordability, are an item of huge consumption. Due to the rapid population rise, the rising foreign influence, the emergence of a female working population and the fluctuating eating habits of people, they have gained popularity among people, contributing significantly to the growth trajectory of the bakery industry.

Social media has turned into an essential element of individuals’ lives students in today’s world of communication. Its use is growing significantly more than ever before especially in the post – pandemic era, marked by a great revolution happening to the recent investigations of using social media show that approximately 3 billion individuals worldwide are now communicating via social media (Iwamoto and Chun, 2020). This growing population of social media users is spending more and more time on social network groupings, as facts and figures show that individuals spend 2 hours a day, on average, on a variety of social media applications, exchanging pictures and messages, updating status, tweeting, favouring and commenting on many updated socially shared information (Abbott, 2017). In the digital age, social media have emerged as a powerful tool for disseminating agricultural technologies and knowledge. ICAR-Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK), Bengaluru Rural has effectively leveraged various platforms to bridge the gap between research and farmers, ensuring timely and relevant information reach the farming community. This article explores how KVK Bengaluru Rural strategically utilizes YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, and X (formerly Twitter) for technology dissemination.
I. Facebook
Facebook’s interactive nature allows KVK Bengaluru Rural to engage with farmers and build a strong online community. The fact that KVK’s Facebook channel has 5080 followers is a significant indicator of its reach and engagement within the farming community. The followers represent a substantial audience actively interested in the KVK’s activities and information, this indicates that, the KVK has successfully established a relevant online community. With this follower base, the KVK can effectively disseminate critical information, such as weather updates, market prices, and technological advancements, to a large segment of the local farming population. A significant follower count suggests that the KVK is perceived as a reliable and trustworthy source of agricultural information, farmers are more likely to follow and engage with organizations they trust.

Introduction
Globally, the agricultural sector plays an important role in poverty reduction, food security and promotion of nutritious food (Jones & Ejeta, 2016). Although agricultural crop production is essential, there are challenges associated with plants due to pests and diseases infestation in the value chain of crop production. Plant health problems can be resolved through appropriate diagnosis and identification of plant pests affecting agricultural (Ausher et al., 1996). However, Oerke (2006) reported that 40 per cent of crop yield losses are caused by plant pests and diseases of economic importance. The majority of smallholder farmers are faced with risks associated with pests and diseases in plant production. To address challenges faced by smallholder farmers, plant health clinics are important for plant pests and disease diagnosis. The plant health clinics can be defined as a system in which farmers obtain advisory services on the plant pest problem affecting agricultural crops and provide management control strategy for pest management (Alokit et al., 2014). There are many plant health clinics initiatives within the Indian region that provides plant pests and diseases advisory services to all categories of the farmers (Boa et al., 2016). Many plant clinics in developing countries which are run by international research institutions are more efficient and effective as compared to those not run by the research institutions. This review seeks to investigate and assess the state of global plant clinics with the aim of obtaining the efficient and effective plant health clinic model for South Africa. The knowledge, awareness, availability and accessibility of basic plant healthcare to smallholder farmers for plant pests and diseases diagnosis to ensure early detection, pest management and pest reporting remain a challenge. Furthermore, there is limited literature and research on plant health clinics’ establishment and its importance to smallholder farmers in the Indian developing country.
Background of the Plant Health Clinics
To date, there are about 34 countries operating plant health clinics globally and it is estimated that there are 4,500 plant clinics across the globe Centre for Agriculture and Biosciences International (CABI), 2020; Tambo et al., 2020). These include plant clinics in Africa, South America and Asia respectively (Boa, 2009; CABI 2020). The first plant health clinics were established in 2003 in Bolivia (Bentley et al., 2009; Boa, 2009). In Africa alone, plant clinics were established with the help of CABI to assist smallholders and household to respond effectively and efficiently towards plant pests and diseases. Nestled in the heart of Karnataka, Tumakuru District is renowned for its verdant landscapes dotted with vast expanses of coconut and areca nut plantations. The region’s unique climatic conditions, characterized by a harmonious blend of sunshine and seasonal rains, create an ideal environment for the growth of coconut palms, which have become a staple of both the local economy and the cultural fabric of the community. Historically, coconut trees have not only provided sustenance but have also played a pivotal role in the livelihoods of many families in Tumakuru. The fruit is a key ingredient in various local dishes and is widely utilized in traditional ceremonies and celebrations. However, the task of harvesting coconuts from these towering trees has long been a physically demanding endeavour. Traditionally, skilled climbers would ascend the tall, slender trunks, utilizing their agility and experience to pluck coconuts by hand. This craft, which once flourished, has now seen a decline, making it increasingly challenging for coconut planters to find professionals who can perform this labour-intensive task. The decline in manpower has made it evident that traditional methods are no longer sustainable. If coconut farmers wish to keep pace with growing market demands, a new approach is necessary one that balances traditional harvesting practices with modern technology. Recognizing this need, innovative minds have introduced the “Coconut Tree Climber”, a mechanized device specifically designed to address the challenges faced by coconut planters. The Coconut Tree Climber is a user-friendly and efficient device that significantly simplifies the process of climbing and harvesting. Built with a strong and adjustable mechanism, the device allows a person to securely climb tall coconut trees with minimal physical effort. More importantly, it drastically reduces the risk of accidents, ensuring the safety of the user. Unlike traditional methods that rely solely on human strength, the device takes advantage of mechanical power, enabling planters to harvest coconuts faster, safer, and more efficiently. This innovation has proven to be a game-changer in the coconut farming industry. Not only does it empower farmers to become self-reliant, but it also minimizes their dependence on skilled climbers. Additionally, the device can be operated by individuals of varying ages and physical strength, making it accessible to a broader range of people. This, in turn, provides new employment opportunities for those who may not have had the physical ability or training to climb trees in the past.

Introduction
Potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) is one of the most important tuberous, starchy and versatile food crop belongs to family Solanaceae. In India potato is grown in an area of 2.07 Mha with a production of 48 MT and a productivity of 23.19 MT/ha. The potato producing major states in India are Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Karnataka. In Karnataka, the crop is grown in an area of 44,160 ha with an annual production of 5,89,120 MT and productivity of 13.34 t/ha (Anonymous, 2014). Further in Karnataka Potato is mainly grown in Hassan, Belgaum, Dharwad, Chikkaballapur and Kolar districts. Hassan district alone contributes more than 41 per cent of potato production in the state (Bhajantri 2011). Basically potato prefers relatively low temperature during early growth and cool weather during tuber development. It requires 25°C temperature at the time of sprouting, 20°C for vegetative growth and 17 to 20°C for tuber development. ARC saplings are mainly used for seed tuber production at a quicker rate. Farmers can produce zero generation seed tubers from ARC saplings without any shipping costs involved. In this regard KVK, Hassan after knowing the existence of innovative ARC sapling technology from the International Center for Potato (CIP), German innovation center (GIZ/GIC) Bengaluru, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Kandali, Hassan procured tissue culture bottles/mother culture from CPRI, Shimla Himachala Pradesh through CIP, GIZ/GIC Bengaluru. By using the mother culture KVK Hassan has produced approximately two lakhs ARC saplings with existing facility and conducted the field evaluation studies on “Performance and evaluation of Apical Rooted Potato saplings in Hassan district”.
About the Technologies Addressed
The ICAR-KVK, Hassan has introduced two technologies in potato during last decade to improve the yield and to reduce the cost of production, namely, Apical Rooted Cuttings (ARC) for quality seed tuber production and Mechanization in Potato to reduce the labour requirement and drudgery. The ARC is a technology where small portion of disease free mother tuber is collected and multiplied under aseptic conditions (Tissue culture) in a growing media to produce new and healthy plantlets. University of Agricultural Sciences, Dharwad is one of the premier agriculture Universities in India has made its remarkable journey in the field of Teaching/ Research / Extension since its inception, UAS, Dharwad has got six Krishi Vigyan Kendras sponsored by Indian Council of Agricultural Research. Which have adopted various outreach methodologies for the farming community. Apart from conventional methods of technology transfer i.e., technologies in pipeline (farm trails) conducted in farmers fields for their acceptance, front line demonstration, on farm testing, PRA, diagnostic field visits etc. KVKs have employed various techniques making use of ICT which have proved to be effective in enhancing the productivity of farms (Medhi et al., 2017), reaching farmers quickly and effectively. The present paper is a compilation of innovative methodologies adopted by KVKs under UAS Dharwad during last five years. As it is mandate for all the KVKs to prepare action plan before the onset of every year during March-April, vigorous exercises are done by KVKs to prioritize the problems faced by farmers in the particular district. These problems are planned to tackle the location specific technologies developed in that zone. If the technologies under FLD banner are not available in particular technologies developed elsewhere in NARS are borrowed and tested for both its sustainability under that agro-ecological system. During this process of prioritizing the problems, implementation and monitoring, KVK adopt various methods given as discussed below.

Introduction 
The mandate of the University under section 30 of the Act of 1963 is for establishment of Extension services for the purposes of under taking extension programs, dissemination of information for solving of problems relating to agriculture and domestic fields, developing the interests of youth in agriculture etc., The first extension service of APAU popularly known as District Extension Education Programmes were introduced in 1967 in Hyderabad district and were subsequently extended to Chittoor(1968)and Guntur (1970) districts. National Demonstrations Scheme (NDS) was established during 1970-71 in the University in four locations. In commemoration of the Golden Jubilee Year of ICAR, a Lab to Land Programme was launched by the APAU in June,1979. In order to improve the productivity of pulses and oilseeds in different regions of the state, two extension education centres were sanctioned by the ICAR at Ananthapur and Rastakuntubai which started functioning from December,1980 and December,1981 respectively. Reorganization of the University Extension work followed the reorganization of research activities of the APAU and implementation of Training and Visit System by the Department of Agriculture to streamline the setup of the field extension program of the University during 1982. To optimize the utilization of available extension resources, the resourcess of District Extension Education programs, extension services around research stations and NATP were integrated and reorganized to form six Extension Education Units. The extension activities of these units were entrusted with the respective Associate Directors of RARS for integrating research and action activities. The Associate directors of Research in turn were made responsible to the Director of Extension. The Extension Education Units conducted different extension activities like organization of field trials for testing new technologies for their feasibility including minikit trials of pre-released varieties to get feedback to the scientists, introduction of new cropping patterns, demonstration of latest technologies through early demonstrations including educational activities like organization of Kisan Melas training programs for the developmental

Three districts of South Gujarat i.e., Surat, Navsari and Valsad are front-runners in horticulture cultivation. These are also part of an agri-export zone for fruits and vegetables. But, the life of these fruit- farmers was made miserable by tiny fruit fly which is a major pest of mango, sapota and cucurbits. Intensity of damage recorded was as high as over 30 per cent in mango and sapota, and between 20-40 per cent in cucurbitaceous vegetables. Fruit flies cause heavy damage in terms of quality and quantity to the farmers every year. Insecticidal sprays, control infestation little bit, but they are not only uneconomical but they leave residual effect much above tolerance limit, adversely affecting the prospects of export of such fruits and vegetables. Fruit flies are a modern-day pestilence which ravage production. These flies, moreover, are good fliers and therefore their spread is extensive. Hence, area wide adoption of management strategy is required. Male Annihilation Technique (MAT), an Integrated Pest Management Technique (IPM), which uses sexual lures to capture males of fruit flies and kill them, is the only way to control growth and spread of fruit flies. This however, requires a community approach for implementation. Navsari Agricultural University designed, developed and commercialized an eco-friendly, economical and easily adoptable fruit fly trap popularly known as “Nauroji-Stonehouse Fruit Fly Trap”. The trap uses Methyl Eugenol and Cue lure as par pheromones well-known for fruit flies. In this trap, plywood blocks are soaked in the solution of lures + solvent + insecticide. Such traps remain effective for 5 to 6 months, which cover the entire fruiting period in mangos, sapota as well as cucurbitaceous vegetables and no recharge is necessary. It is eco- friendly, economical and easily adoptable. It was decided to adopt this technology and spread it in the Surat- Navsari- Valsad belt for controlling and managing the fruit fly problem. It was also recognized that wide area adoption would help in developing this zone as a Pest Free Area (PFA). The project was taken up under RKVY.
About the Technology Addressed and Extension Management Practices
Nauroji-Stonehouse Fruits Fly Traps are prepared in food quality Testing Laboratory, NAU Navsari. Six talukas viz, Gandevi, Chikhali, Valsad, Pardi, Dharampur and Kaprada of Navsari and Valsad districts were selected for the purpose. A block of orchards in each village in each Taluka was selected for first year implementation. Other blocks were selected during the following years.

Introduction 
The Pleurotus species, belongs of the basidiomycetes class, are typically grown on non-composted lignocellulose substrates and have a shorter growth cycle compared to other types of mushrooms (Bellettini et al., 2018). These are shell-like fruiting bodies commonly known as “oyster mushroom” and also referred as “Dhingri mushroom” in India. The fanor spatula-shaped fruit body can be found in various colours depending on the species, including white, pink, yellow, grey, and blue (Verma et al., 2023). Their cultivation is popular due to the simple and low-cost methods. These mushrooms are highly favored not only for their taste, flavor, and pleasing texture but also for their nutritional and medicinal benefits (Sharma and Khanna 2019, Sarita et al., 2023). Pleurotus sp. are found naturally in both temperate and tropical regions across the globe which are cultivated more widely around the world due to their adaptable nature (Badshah et al., 2021). Despite their potential, India’s mushroom production has declined significantly, from 487 million MT in 2017 to 314.84 million MT in 2023 (Anonymous, 2023). Mushroom farming in Gujarat presents several opportunities due to various factors such as favorable climatic conditions, easy availability of raw material increasing market demand and supportive government initiatives. In India, rice straw is 80 Innovations of University Extension in Indian Agriculture mainly used as substrate for large scale mushroom production (Kundu et al., 2022). But, cultivation and consumption of mushroom were limited due to lack of awareness about the health benefits of this high valued food. However, by the efforts of KVKs under Agricultural Universities through the trainings and awareness programs, mushroom cultivation becomes popular among the people of Gujarat particularly in rural areas. Entrepreneurs and farmers can tap into this growing sector for profitable ventures, provided they are equipped with the necessary knowledge and resources.

Introduction 
In 1804, Nicolas Theodore de Saussure demonstrated that plants don’t uptake carbon from the humus, rather it comes from the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. He further stated that soil is source of plant nutrients. Subsequently in 1840, Carl Sprengel proposed law of minimum which mean the growth is regulated by scarcest (minimum available) resource instead of total resources. During the same time, Justus von Liebig observed that the chemical elements nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K) are essential for the plant growth. He strongly popularized the theory of mineral nutrients and law of minimum by developing the barrel with multiple holes at different height and filling water in it. It has opened the door of fertilizers industries; therefore, Justus von Liebig has been described as the “father of the fertilizer industry”. Consequently, many fertilizer companies started producing various chemical fertilizers all over the world. This had increased the productivity of the various crops. In India the first fertilizer factory which produced Single Super Phosphate (SSP) was started in Ranipet, Tamil Nadu in 1906 (Chaudhary, 2023). Before, green revolution we have established fertilizers industries of Ammonium Sulphate (1933), Ammonium Sulphate Nitrate (1959), Urea (1959), Ammonium Chloride (1959), Ammonium Phosphate (1960), Calcium Ammonium Nitrate (1961), Nitro phosphate (1965) and Di Ammonium Phosphate (1967). The green revolution ushered in 1967-68 was due to introduction of input responsive high yielding dwarf variety of wheat and use of chemical (mineral) fertilizers. These chemical fertilizers alone were responsible for increasing the yield of wheat by 233 per cent (Khunt et al. 2014&2015). If chemical fertilizers would not have been used for the crop production, we would not be in the position to feed the burgeoning human population. In the pursuit of increasing productivity, we injudiciously used chemical fertilizers and overlooked the deleterious effect of it on animal, human and environmental health. Production and use of chemical fertilizers, has increased the level of Green House Gases (GHGs) in the atmosphere. To reduce GHGs and their environmental impact, alternate source of plant nutrients viz., Farm Yard Manures (FYM), composts, organic waste-derived amendments, biofertilizers, etc. started gaining popularity. Introduction
 Banana is a common man's fruit grown in about seven lakh ha area in India. Apart from fruit, banana crop generate huge quantity of waste biomass in the form of pseudostem, leaves, suckers, etc. This biomass is absolute waste in most of the states of India as of now. Further farmers are spending about Rs. 15000 to 20000/ha for disposing off this waste from their fields. The present mode of disposing off pseudostem waste in nallas, borrow pits, road side, burning etc., which are causing environmental problems. In order to utilize this waste particularly pseudostem for developing different products, a project titled; “A Value Chain on Utilization of Banana Pseudostem for Fibre and Other Value Added Products” was sanctioned under NAIP in consortium mode by ICAR, New Delhi during 2008. The project entitled, “Establishment of Secondary Agriculture unit for skill development in students and farmers” was sanctioned by PIU, under the aegis of NAHEP-CAAST sub project in 2018. Under this project “Value addition and waste management of horticultural produces” was examined in special reference to banana pseudostem as supplemental raw material for NOVEL pesticide and fungicide. In view of this, Soil and Water Management Research Unit, N.A.U., Navsari have worked in consortium comprises of Central Institute for Research on Cotton Technology (CIRCOT), ICAR, Mumbai, Manmade Textile Research Association (MANTRA), Surat and J. K. Mills Ltd., Songadh as the partners. The basic aim of this project was to develop different value added products using presently waste banana pseudostem as raw material. As envisaged in project proposal, the value added products viz; Fibre and nonwoven fabrics, handmade papers and boards, vermi-compost, enriched sap (NAUROJI Novel organic liquid nutrient) and candy have been developed which are techno economically viable. The viability is substantiated by the fact that more than ten private parties have already signed MoU with NAU, Navsari for commercial production and marketing of organic liquid nutrient prepared using banana pseudostem sap and central core candy. Simultaneously, processes for the products like microcrystalline cellulose from Fibre, sap as a mordant in textile dying, pseudostem scutcher based vermicompost as fish feed, etc. have also been standardized during the current project period. This has become possible due to highly dedicated efforts put in by the team of scientists from all the four partners and full moral boosting supports by their authorities in implementing the project smoothly.

Introduction 
Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has emerged as a transformative force in agriculture, significantly enhancing access to information, improving productivity, and promoting sustainable practices. The integration of ICT tools facilitates the dissemination of critical agricultural knowledge, enabling farmers to make informed decisions regarding planting, pest control, and market trends. This technological advancement is particularly beneficial for small-scale farmers who often face challenges in accessing timely and relevant information. ICT platforms such as mobile phones and radios play a crucial role in providing small-scale farmers with access to essential agricultural input information, aiding them in making informed decisions (Fosu & Giba-Fosu, 2024). Furthermore, ICT tools, including e-learning platforms and mobile applications, have revolutionized agricultural extension services by providing direct access to advisory services and expert knowledge. The use of social media and mobile communication has also improved interactions between farmers and agricultural experts, thereby increasing the effectiveness of extension programs (Bhat et al., 2024). The advent of digital and smart agriculture, supported by ICT, incorporates technologies such as remote sensing, precision agriculture, and automated machinery to optimize farming practices and reduce labor dependency (Yoe, 2024). Agri-informatics, a specialized branch of ICT in agriculture, leverages emerging technologies like Big Data and the Internet of Things (IoT) to develop sophisticated agricultural systems, promoting smart farming practices (Jena, 2024). While ICT provides numerous advantages, challenges such as infrastructural limitations, economic constraints, and disparities in digital literacy hinder its widespread adoption. Addressing these barriers through policy interventions and capacity-building initiatives is crucial for maximizing the potential of ICT in agriculture. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is increasingly integrated into agriculture to address contemporary challenges such as climate change, population growth, and the demand for sustainable food production. AI applications in soil and crop monitoring, predictive analytics, and agricultural robotics are gaining attraction, assisting farmers in data collection and analysis (Smith, 2020; Gupta et al., 2023). Moreover, automation in agriculture, driven by AI, addresses issues such as crop diseases, irrigation management, and pest control. Techniques like IoT, machine learning, and deep learning contribute to the automation of farming practices, increasing soil fertility and productivity (Jha et al., 2019). Robotics and automated systems minimize human intervention, thereby enhancing farm efficiency and sustainability (Eli-Chukwu, 2019). The implementation of AI in agriculture yields numerous benefits, including enhanced productivity, costeffectiveness, and sustainability. AI assists in optimizing resource utilization,

Introduction
The Directorate of Extension Education, came into existence during 1967 under Odisha University of Agriculture and Technology. This directorate is engaged with various projects viz: University Extension Block Programme, Distance Education, Digital Extension, Information wing, Gender resource center, Educational Museum besides managing 31 KVKs in 28 districts of Odisha except Cuttack and Khordha district in which University Extension Block Programme and Farmers FIRST program is in operational. This directorate adopted several innovative extension approaches which made the OUAT KVKs unique in operational modalities and effective in delivering for the development of farming community in Odisha, some of the innovative approaches are: Development of KVK Action Plan, CoE on FPOs, R-E Linkage and Krushi Samrudhi helpline.
Development Process of Action Plan
Krishi Vigyan Kendras work as a knowledge resource center in agriculture and allied field for the district (Singh et al., 2012) where in, production and supply of critical technological products, both tangible and intangible is the major component other than having scientifically maintained demonstration units, crop cafeteria etc. Development of complete feasible action plan of KVKs requires sincere efforts in identifying the real problems on one hand and sourcing the frontline technologies on the other. The logical fitment of suitable technological options for testing, in addressing situation specific problems are also an important activity requiring our understanding of the major farming systems in the AES, micro-farming situations of different crops & commodities and our scientific orientation. For this OUAT adopts a uniform action planning process since last few years which involves different activities.
1. Identifying the problems
2. Prioritizing the problems
3. Analyzing the problems and finding root cause(s) of the prioritized problems.
4. Sourcing alternative technologies and listing possible solutions nearer to hit the root cause and address the problems.
5. Taking into consideration the follow up activities require to be undertaken for previous year OFTs and FLDs
6. Planning interventions including those for other extension activities, production of critical inputs etc.
7. Consolidation of interventions and finalization of action plan with respect to OFT, FLD, Capacity building, other extension activities or combination of these.

Introduction
The modernization of farming systems across the country is transforming agriculture. Yet, public extension services often struggle to keep pace with the growing demands for knowledge dissemination due to widen gap between farmers and extension agent i.e., 5000:1 (Ragasa et al.,2013). Also, only 6.8% farmers receive extension services directly from state extension agency (GFRAS, 2012). In this context, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) emerges as a game-changer, offering innovative solutions to address these challenges and empower farmers with crucial insights. The integration of ICT in agriculture is revolutionizing the way knowledge and services reach farmers, especially in resource-constrained and remote regions. ICTs, such as mobile technology, have demonstrated significant potential in extending the reach of agricultural extension services. For instance, mobile hotlines now enable farmers to obtain technical advice and market information, including price updates and market locations (Aker and Mbiti, 2010). Such tools empower users, particularly in remote areas, to access vital information and communicate efficiently (Aker, 2011). To meet farmers’ diverse and specialized information needs, ICT-based models must bridge these gaps effectively. However, the success of ICT interventions depends heavily on affordability and the customization of information to address the highly localized nature of agriculture (McNamara et al., 2011; Bell, 2015).
Digital Choupal
Recognizing these challenges, Bihar Agricultural University (BAU), Sabour, has pioneered an innovative solution by introducing Digital Choupal through videoconferencing facilities at Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVKs) and colleges of the university across the state. This initiative has supported agricultural extension by significantly reducing the barriers posed by distance and resource limitations. Bihar, a densely populated state in India with 1,102 people per sq. km, faces significant challenges in its agricultural sector. Employing around 75% of the workforce and contributing 35% to the GDP, agriculture remains a vital part of the state’s economy. However, technology adoption is slow, particularly in rural areas, due to poor connectivity and limited communication infrastructure. Less than half of Bihar’s villages are connected by roads, and access to trained extension personnel is scarce. These limitations hinder the dissemination of agricultural innovations and the provision of real-time advisory to farmers, which are essential for enhancing productivity and improving livelihoods. The laboratory techniques are defined as the processes and practices that are recommended for equipment use in the laboratory, while laboratory methods are based on established scientific principles involving biology, chemistry, and physics, and encompass all aspects of the clinical laboratory from testing the amount of cholesterol in blood to analysing DNA to growing microscopic organisms that may be causing an infection. One of the most significant parts of laboratory techniques and laboratory methods is the proper validation of the equipments (old or new equipments) as well as all the testing procedures/ methods (established or newly developed methods). Analytical method validation is a critical process to ensure the quality and safety of products. The objective of the validation of an analytical method is to demonstrate that it is suitable for its intended purpose; the results are authentic and universally acceptable. GLP ensures that laboratory studies are conducted in a scientific manner, maintaining high standards of ethical practice, precision, and reproducibility, with a primary focus on ensuring public and environmental safety. Introduced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 1978, GLP gained global recognition through the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), which established guidelines for its implementation. GLP principles are now widely adopted in regulatory testing for pharmaceuticals, chemicals, food safety, and environmental testing. The OECD’s guidance on GLP has been instrumental in developing standards across the globe, ensuring that test results are scientifically valid and can be accepted internationally. In Asia, particularly in India and other developing countries, GLP compliance has gained increasing importance as pharmaceutical, environmental, and chemical industries expand. Regulatory bodies in these regions have gradually aligned their standards with international norms to ensure their competitiveness in global markets. This chapter discusses the key SOPs necessary for GLP compliance and provides a regional perspective, focusing on India and other Asian nations, where GLP frameworks are evolving to meet international standards.

In veterinary and allied fields, GLP extends beyond general scientific rigor to address the unique challenges of animal health, food safety, and environmental protection related to animal populations. It ensures the reliability and traceability of data generated in studies related to veterinary pharmaceuticals, feed additives, diagnostics, and environmental toxicology involving animals. The focus is on maintaining the integrity of studies that directly impact animal welfare, public health, and agricultural sustainability (World Organization for Animal Health, 2018; FDA, 2010). In the context of veterinary medicine or treatment aspects, GLP in veterinary refers to a a well organised quality system that governs the organization and conditions under which non-clinical studies related to animal health and safety are planned, performed, monitored, recorded, reported, and archived. This includes:

Increasing population, industrialization, and change in the human lifestyle have become the reason for the exhaustion of non-renewable energy sources, our prime energy resource. The combustion of non-renewable energy sources produces toxic pollutants such as CO2, CO, NOx, SO2, etc., and greenhouse gases CH4, CO2, and N2O which significantly contribute to global warming, environmental pollution, and health hazards. In the current scenario, we need a green energy source that does not generate toxic gases and is eco-friendly. Hence, the research is triggered towards finding alternative solutions to overcome the energy crisis. The various green energy sources are solar, wind, tidal, geothermal, hydropower, biomass, hydrogen fuel cells, etc. The major drawback of these sources is the geographical location to install the plants. In the present context, identifying an alternate energy source that is sustainable, renewable, and eco-friendly to overcome the ever-growing energy demands is crucial. Hence, bioenergy is an eco-friendly, economical, and sustainable source of energy that gratifies the contemporary development environment by utilizing the potential of renewable organic energy resources (Yin and Wang et al., 2022).
2. Biomass
The sources of biomass are agro wastes, wood wastes, aquatic wastes, municipal wastes, wet wastes, industrial wastes, forest residues, etc. Figure 1.1 illustrates various sources of biomass, such as agricultural leftovers, forestry waste, energy crops, and organic municipal waste, showcasing their potential as renewable energy resources. Biomass is the product of photosynthesis and is also a versatile renewable energy source that can be utilized for sustainable biohydrogen generation. Biomass absorbs atmospheric CO2 during its growth, leading to relatively a lower net carbon impact as compared to fossil fuels. Renewable organic resources (biomass) can be in a solid, liquid, or gaseous phase. Energy generation through the incineration of biomass has been a longstanding practice. Since the energy potential of the biomass is not extracted effectively, it leads to environmental pollution (Kumar and Fiori et al., 2024). Biomass can be converted to liquid and gaseous fuels called biofuels with significant calorific value through thermochemical and biochemical processes (Gautam et al., 2020). Biofuels are superior to fossil fuels in the context of sustainability and reduced emissions of greenhouse gases. A variety of biofuels and chemicals such as bio-ethanol, biodiesel, acetic acid, formaldehyde, etc., can be manufactured from biomass (Gautam et al., 2020). Globally, research is advancing towards replacing non-renewable fuels with biofuels. However, the transition to biofuel technique presents a challenge due to the huge space requirement for biomass. Table 1.1 illustrates the categories of biomass employed for hydrogen generation, categorized into lignocellulosic materials, algal biomass, organic waste, and energy crops.

Fossils fuel resources are crucial for producing and distributing other goods, making them one of the most important global commodities. Fossil fuels account for more than 75% of total energy consumption in society. It is critical to recognize that the fossil energy problem and anthropogenic climate change problem are inextricably linked and must be addressed as two intertwined challenges requiring a comprehensive solution. The features of coal, oil and gas which are employed as fossil fuels for power generation, have different classification of characteristics (Shindell & Smith, 2019). Fossil fuels are natural fuels and derived from the decompositions, heating and pressurization, of buries phytoplankton (plants) and zooplankton (animals). Over time, these waste materials get decomposed to produce carbon rich deposits that are now used to create energy products (Holechek et al., 2022). They are essential for the synthesis of steel and polymers in addition to energy. Fossil fuels fall into three main categories: coal, oil, and natural gas (Singh et al., 2023). Biofuels are produced from plants and animals waste materials and considered as a renewable source of energy. The sources are key components to overcome the issues related to greenhouse gas emission. Due to rapid change in climatic conditions, demand of renewable energy sources has increased. There are some drawbacks for fossil fuels due to presence of high carbon footprints and environmental impacts. On the other way, biofuels offer two major benefits first they reduce carbon emissions and modify waste management method, the other paving the way for a sustainable future. The carbon neutrality of biofuels is among their most alluring features. Biofuels only release the carbon dioxide that plants consume during growth, as opposed to fossil fuels that release old, stored carbon into the atmosphere. They are an eco-friendly choice because of this balance(Jeswani et al., 2020). Bioethanol, biodiesel, and biogas are among the several types of biofuels(Esmaeili & Tamjidi, 2021). Bioethanol is used in transportation and produced by using crops like corn and sugarcane. Waste management and sustainable energy production are further enhanced by biogas after producing with the help of anaerobic digestion of organic waste and is a great source of energy for heating and power generation. We can take a comprehensive approach to sustainability, improving energy efficiency and lessening our environmental impact, by combining the production of biofuel with waste management and the use of organic fertilizers. Significance environmental benefits of biofuels include lower GHG emission, reduced dependency on the fossil fuels and better air quality. By diversifying energy sources and possibly stabilizing prices, they also lessen exposure to changes in the world's oil markets, which promotes energy security. Nonetheless, it is essential to evaluate the wider ramifications of biofuel production and make sure that its advantages exceed any potential disadvantages in order to completely match with sustainability goals(Jeswani et al., 2020).

A major challenge facing the world today is making the transition to a sustainable and resource-efficient economy, especially considering climate change, resource depletion, and rising waste production. The idea of a circular economy has drawn a lot of attention in this setting. In contrast to the conventional linear economic paradigm of “take-make-dispose,” the circular economy prioritizes closed-loop solutions that reduce waste and environmental impact by reusing, recycling, and regenerating resources. The efficient use of biomass as a plentiful and renewable resource to produce biofuels, biochemicals, and bio-based products is a crucial part of this circular framework. The combination of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, known as lignocellulosic biomass, is one of the most widely available and sustainable types of feedstocks for biomass. Originating from forestry byproducts, specific energy crops, and agricultural residues like corn stover and wheat straw, lignocellulosic biomass is a feasible substitute for raw materials derived from fossil fuels [1]. By minimizing reliance on non-renewable resources and supporting sustainable waste management, its conversion through biorefineries into a wide range of bio-based goods is fully in line with the concepts of the circular economy [2]. Integrated systems known as lignocellulosic biorefineries maximize resource efficiency and reduce environmental impact by converting all the components of biomass into marketable products. The production of biofuels (such as bioethanol and biodiesel), platform chemicals, bioplastics, and energy by these biorefineries greatly aids in the creation of renewable energy and sustainable industrial processes [3]. Biorefineries can maximize the utilization of biomass feedstocks by converting them into high-value products while upholding zero-waste principles by utilizing a variety of biochemical and thermochemical conversion processes [4]. A summation of the function of lignocellulosic biorefineries in promoting the circular economy is given in this chapter. The first section covers the current developments in pretreatment and conversion methods as well as the composition of lignocellulosic biomass. By incorporating these technologies into biorefinery systems, waste valorization and energy efficiency issues can be resolved, and biobased goods can be produced more effectively. This chapter also examines the prospects and problems faced by lignocellulosic biorefineries, looking at their technological, economic, and regulatory elements as well as how they might help with the worldwide transition to a circular bioeconomy.

The world is reaching a crucial moment in the energy sector as the third decade of the twenty-first century unfolds (Azarpour et al., 2022). Concern over the prospects of our energy supplies has increased globally because of the key priorities posed by climate change and the necessity for economic stability and energy security. The transition to energy from renewable sources is widely viewed as a crucial component in transforming our relationship with nature, the economy, and cultural values (O'Connor and Cleveland, 2014; Hassan et al., 2024). Reducing the usage of fossil fuels in our energy supply systems is known as an energy transition (Cherp, Jewell and Goldthau, 2011). Fossil fuels, such as crude oil, and natural gas, supply a substantial share of the world's energy. Interest in energy transitions has grown because, in addition to the fact that most fossilfuel resources are reserve-based, burning the vast amounts of fossil fuels that are currently available, and the resulting environmental effects are the main drivers of energy transitions (Crow, Brown and De Young, 2006). Bioenergy refers to renewable energy produced from materials derived from biological sources. Any organic substance such as plants, agricultural or forestry residues, or the organic portion of industrial and municipal trash that stores solar energy as chemical energy is considered a biomass feedstock. The first energy source that humans employed was biomass, which could supply roughly onefourth of the world's primary energy, or 138 EJ (exajoules) (calculated by averaging estimated numbers from five reports) (Welfle, 2017). Because of its versatility in producing various forms of energy and chemicals, bioenergy is a desirable energy choice for all stages of development. It has a great potential for integration with current infrastructures, may produce energy that may be dispatched to balance changing demands, and most importantly provides energy with lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuel pathways, unlike many other renewable energy sources (Demirbas, 2008). It is anticipated that sustainable renewable energy sources, including biomass, sun (heat energy and PV (photovoltaic)), wind, hydroelectricity, geothermal, and wave and tidal energy sources, are expected to play a vital role in the future global energy supply (Panwar, Kaushik and Kothari, 2011). Compared to other sources of sustainable and clean energy, biological feedstock offers the advantage of being able to be stored and being easily accessible year-round from a variety of sources. Estimates suggest that biomass contributed 10% of the global energy demand in 2008 (Main-Knorn et al., 2013), with further advancements expected to increase this contribution by two to six times by 2050 (Zema et al., 2012). It is believed that biomass is a distinctive and promising form of "green" energy. It is abundantly found in nature and can be easily produced in most rural environments (Broda, Yelle and Serwanska, 2022). Biomass sources are generally classified into two categories: inherent and processed materials, the most common forms of sources comprise, wood, logging wastes, animal dung, aquatic plants and algae, agricultural crop waste products and processing residues, and municipal solid waste. Additionally, three categories have been established for biomass resources. Wastes include agricultural remnants, agricultural processing by-products and wastes, urban wood debris, urban organic materials, and wastes from mills. Forest goods include bark, sawdust, logging leftovers, timber, trees, plants, and wood debris from land clearing. Bioenergy crops encompass grasses, fast-growing woody plants, woody herbaceous plants, oilseed plants (soybean, sunflower, and safflower), sugar crops (cane and beet), and starch plants (corn, wheat, and barley) (Qian, Malmali and Wickramasinghe, 2016). Growers favour energy plants, sometimes referred to as

The newly developed smart energy management systems improve energy production, distribution, and consumption by utilizing cutting-edge technology like artificial intelligence (AI), data analytics, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Smart energy management is a notion that limelight on lifting the reliability and efficiency of energy systems. With the usage of current technologies, smart energy systems can audit real-time energy use, and energy demands and manipulate the power distribution accordingly. This required to improvising the potential of renewable energy (Hossain et al., 2024). Energy recovery is defined as the reusing of energy, that has the possibility to get waste in the following forms, heat, waste materials, gas and so on. In the bioenergy industry organic waste is converted into a suitable form of energy, which gives hybrid benefits like waste reduction and energy generation. Furthermore, a highly resilient and efficient energy system that meets sustainable development goals can be created by combining these recovery systems with intelligent energy management tools (Mariana et al., 2021). The investigation of how energy recovery technologies and intelligent energy management can improve the efficiency and sustainability of bioenergy systems is covered in this chapter. The potential of smart energy solutions to meet the increasing need for sustainable and renewable energy sources will be highlighted in this research through a thorough analysis of case studies, emerging trends, and existing technologies. A roadmap for the future of bioenergy will be provided, together with an identification of the main obstacles and possibilities that players in this quickly changing industry must contend with (Naeem, et al., 2024).

7.1 Introduction
Valorization in simple terms means to increase the value of a product, in economics it is usually through government and administrative actions. In the concept of waste management, it is defined as the process of reutilizing or making a new product of value from waste sources. Several kinds of wastes can be transformed into materials and energy of value, one such example is agricultural wastes. These agricultural wastes are eligible to be a base for manufacturing refined commodity (Capanoglu, Nemli and Tomas-Barberan, 2022) such as chemicals, adsorbents, pharmaceutical products, acids, chitosan, certain type of wax esters, pigments etc. or can be used in several industrial or domestic processes as an energy source, most commonly the production of bioethanol. Valorization greatly contributes to circular economy as materials are continuously renewed and reused, minimizing the need for virgin resources. By transforming agricultural wastes into value – added products, valorization helps to close the loop, ensuring that each by – product is put to use in an efficient, affordable and green way, thereby reducing the dependance on conventional waste management techniques such as landfills and incineration. Moreover, valorization has other benefits, including improved public health, development of newer industries in the material recovery and processing and waste management sector. It can also bring about social awareness about sustainable practices, fostering responsible consumption and waste disposal behaviors.
7.2 Types of Agricultural Wastes
Generally, agricultural wastes are organic. The most common types of agricultural wastes are biomass from rotten produce, crops, livestock carcasses, dead leaves, droppings from livestock and straws. These organic wastes have vast potential in being converted to value – added products through various methods without much additional treatment. Inorganic wastes such as heavy metals like Pb, Cu, Hg and Ba are also found in agricultural runoff containing pesticides, paints etc. Figure 7.1 (Omojola Awogbemi et al. 2022) provides various examples of agricultural wastes that are commonly used in the production of materials and energy.

Glycerol, a colourless and odourless sweet viscous liquid, is a prominent member of the polyol family—compounds distinguished by their multiple alcohol groups. Chemically known as 1, 3-propanetriol and commonly referred to as glycerine, it contains three hydroxyl (-OH) groups, which contribute to its hygroscopic nature and chemical versatility. As an essential component of lipids, glycerol forms the structural backbone of fats and oils, underscoring its biological and chemical significance. Over the years, glycerol has transitioned from being a laboratory curiosity to becoming a cornerstone of modern industrial processes, thanks to its versatility and renewable sourcing (Zhu et al., 2024).
Modern Applications and Industrial Importance of Glycerol
1. Chemical Industry: As a versatile platform chemical glycerol supports the creation of acrolein, propylene glycol and polyhydroxyalkanoates derivatives. Catalytic transformations allow glycerol to produce glycerol carbonate which finds application in lubricants, solvents and polymer synthesis research (Aranda et al., 2009). Glycerol demonstrates essential functionality in the creation of hydrogen and syngas which results in more eco-friendly manufacturing methods.
2. Pharmaceuticals and Cosmetics: The humectant and lubricant properties of glycerol make it essential for pharmaceuticals and cosmetics where it maintains moisture in cough syrups, lozenges, and skin creams while improving texture. The medical derivative glycerol trinitrate provides essential treatment for angina pectoris which results in substantial therapeutic advantages (Binod et al., 2011).
3. Food Industry: Glycerol functions as a humectant and preservative, maintaining moisture in products like dried fruits, confectioneries, and beverages. In formulations free of sugar, it also serves as a sweetener (Awogbemi and Von Kallon, 2022).
4. Animal Feed: A economical energy source for cattle, crude glycerol, a biodiesel byproduct, helps sustainable agricultural methods (Mekunye and Makinde, 2024).
5. Energy and Environmental Sustainability: Glycerol is used in biogas development to improve methane yields and helps the development of bio refineries for converting waste glycerol into biofuels, lipids, and other sustainable chemicals (Peng et al., 2023).
6. Other Applications: Glycerol finds usage as a concrete addition for enhanced durability and in antifreeze compositions in the building and automobile industries. In printing, paper manufacture, and microbial fermentation techniques, it also finds roles as a plasticiser, lubricant, and carbon source (Solowski et al., 2020).

The growing demand for fossil fuels around the world and their extensive use, which degrades the environment, have been serious issues. More precisely, it is predicted that global energy consumption will rise by 49% between 2007 and 2035 due to social pressure, population growth, and economic expansion (Cheah et al., 2016; Prasad et al., 2016). In order to replace fossil fuels, alternative energy resources must be developed, according to energy security and environmental sustainability. The most promising bio-fuel among the alternatives to gasoline is bio-ethanol, which can be used as the only fuel in compatible automobile engines or blended with gasoline up to 30% without requiring engine changes (Safarian and Unnthorsson, 2018). Bio-ethanol has a higher-octane number, which enables engines to run at high compression ratios, and a high oxygen content, which improves combustion efficiency (Branco et al., 2019). Grain, sugar beets, corn, and sugarcane could all be used to make bio-ethanol. Together, Brazil and the United States account for over 90% of the world’s bio-ethanol production, with 59% and 27% coming from each country, respectively (Branco et al., 2019).The Policy Energy Act and Energy Independence and Security Act, which aim to consume 136 billion gallons of bio-ethanol by 2022, are the main drivers of the USA’s remarkably high production rate (Menon and Rao, 2012; Tran et al., 2019). Unfortunately, the world’s food security is now in jeopardy due to the manufacture of bio-ethanol from the aforementioned edible energy crops. For the synthesis of bio-ethanol, lignocellulosic biomass-such as agricultural residues, forest woody residues, micro-algae, and even municipal solid waste is consequently a more advantageous source. Cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin make up the lignocellulosic complex structure. Compared to the thermochemical approach, the biochemical conversion process performed better and was more ecologically friendly (Mu et al., 2010; Liyamen and Ricke, 2012; Kumar et al., 2019). It should be mentioned that the pre-treatment cost should also include the expense of detoxifying harmful inhibitors, which are created as a result of the pre-treatment technique (Liyamen and Ricke, 2012). All things considered, a successful pre-treatment ought to be both financially and environmentally responsible. It’s also critical to make sure that other advantageous aspect like maximum energy savings, waste and wastewater recycling, material recovery, and the use of a biorefinery method are taken into account throughout the lignocellulosic bioethanol production process (Kumar et al., 2019). By the combination of advanced technologies such as Internet of Things (IoT), Artifi cial Intelligence (AI), Machine Learning (ML), optimization and transformation of bioenergy systems can be effectively achieved. This technology can also be used to monitor and control the bioenergy systems actively so as to complement the prerequisite of the implementation and operations in bioenergy plants successfully (Syed, 2024). The era of increased need for the renewable sources and alarming issues of climate alteration calls for the innovative energy management (Jones, 2017). It emphasizes the demand for SEM in bioenergy systems ensuring the production of sustainable, eco-compatible and structures bioenergy system. This chapter foreground the top causes for which SEM to be more vital for the future bioenergy prospects.SEM enables real-time monitoring and optimization which allows bioenergy plants and their production of energy according to the demand, weather conditions and availability of the feedstock (Swami et al., 2023). SEM also generates the way to regulate bioenergy systems to facilitate the cost, performance, and energy conversion efficacy by utilising sensors, statistics and cloud computing (Fig 1). The integration of SEM with bioenergy is specifically relevant because of the variable and complicated nature of biomass feedstocks which include forest and agricultural residues, and food waste (Rodrigues et al., 2022, Duca and Tascano, 2022). The variations such as, moisture, quality and energy density show the effect on the efficiency in the production of bioenergy. Smart technologies are used to monitor as well as optimize the energy production along with the real-time fluctuations in response to the demand, feedstock availability and its supply (Hao et al., 2022)
1.2 AI (Artificial Intelligence) ML (Machine Learning) and IoT
There are two major emerging technologies named AI and ML which have transformed SEM for bioenergy systems. These technologies ease predictive analytics, decision making and enhanced simple processes. By analysing the massive datasets gathered from bioenergy operations, AI systems are able to forecast future energy output, system efficacy and operational damage (Saju et al., 2025). Utilizing real-time data feed such as pH range, composition of feedstock, temperature etc, AI systems incorporated with bioenergy plants can forecast biogas generation in and anaerobic digestion system (Barasa, 2021). Algorithms of ML in SEM helps in analysing and enhancing decision making process by both live and historical data. It predicts the forecast pattern in energy output and modify the operational parameters. Consequently, through a continuous learning process over time, the forecast prediction and bioenergy system are becoming more and more efficient (Khan et al., 2022). Bioenergy systems such as feedstock transport, conversion processes, and energy distribution can have real-time data which are collected by IoT technologies, constituting sensors, actuators and other connected devices (Ahuja and Khosla, 2019; Wang et al., 2022). Intelligent energy management systems utilizing IoT and AI technologies can greatly improve the efficiency of energy distribution and use, contributing to more sustainable urban environments. According to Liew et al., 2021, sensors are the source of valuable insights for the operation of bioenergy because it helps the operators in make decisions about system performance and efficiency and gain a better knowledge of the system functions. Sensors are installed in bioenergy facilities to provide continuous monitoring of information such as temperature, moisture content, pressure, and gas composition using IoT. Figure 2 depicts the significance of AI, IoT and ML in renewable energy.

1. Background
The growing global population, industrialization, and urbanization have driven rising energy demand, with primary energy use increasing by 5.8% in 2024 (BP Statistical Review of World Energy 2024). The need for secure, affordable, and low-carbon energy is critical due to fossil fuel depletion, global warming, and geopolitical tensions. Clean energy sources like solar, wind, and biofuels are being explored, with biodiesel standing out as the only biofuel capable of fully replacing fossil fuels (Aizouq et al., 2020). Many countries, including India and China, are advancing biofuel production, with the latter viewing it as a key to energy security. Biofuels, derived from various sources like algae, crops, and waste, include biodiesel, bioethanol, and biogas. They are categorized into four generations based on feedstock. First-generation biofuels, made from edible materials, face food vs. fuel competition. Second-generation biofuels from non-edible sources are more sustainable but still face resource limitations (Lv et al., 2019). Thirdand fourth-generation biofuels from microalgae offer higher yields and better land use, with species like Chlorella vulgaris and Nannochloropsis oceanica showing promise for biodiesel production. Microalgae’s fast growth and efficiency have led to advances in biodiesel production, although challenges remain, such as species selection and production scale-up (Arora et al., 2021). But there is a constraint for commercial availability of these biofuel which are the economic and environmental obstacles that are creating problematic condition for approval and use of genetically engineered microalgae for their potential to enhance lipid yields. This chapter delves into the current opportunities and challenges in microalgae biofuel production, focusing the need for regular research and innovation (Maliha and Abu-Hijleh 2022).
2. Choosing the Different Classes Of Microalgal Strains
The achievement of huge-scale microalgal culture relies on picking appropriate species. The production of various lipids greatly affects the selection of strains and biofuel properties. For the biodiesel, Triacylglycerol (TAG) is the preferred lipid but compared to green algae its content is typically low in cyanobacteria. with the average lipid content of 25.5%, green algae (Chlorophyceae) stand as the largest class of oleaginous microalgae, which can rise under nutrient stress (Saini et al., 2021). Also, the biomass productivity is equally important for high lipid productivity as high lipid content is beneficial. For biodiesel production, strain selection should focus on both lipid content and biomass. Chromochloris zofingiensis shows the highest lipid productivity among all classes of green algae. The saturated (SFA) and monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA) fatty acid (FA) being dominant, their composition also plays a vital role in biodiesel quality. It has seen those high levels of C16:0 and C18:1 in microalgae is ideal for biodiesel production (Bharti et al., 2021). Therefore, for improved biodiesel performance, strain selection should consider both lipid productivity and FA composition (Bagchi and Mallick, 2016).

Introduction
Fossil fuels are finite and as population growth drives energy demands, the need for renewable energy solutions has become paramount. Among the many ways of producing biofuels, the use of algae has emerged as a promising source. Algae particularly, microalgae are photosynthetic organisms that can convert CO2 into fuel compounds. This innovative way of using microalgae to produce biofuels can address both sustainability as well as the depletion of fossil fuels.
1.1 Microalgae as energy source
Microalgae can be used over conventional biomass as they have several advantages. One of the biggest advantages is their rapid growth rate. They are easy to grow and multiply very quickly. Other benefits include high oil yield and their adaptability to different growth conditions. They also use CO2 to grow making them carbon neutral. Conventional biomass obtained from sugar bagasse or corn needs a lot of resources for a small yield, such as land, water, and electricity whereas microalgae do not require these high investment costs or land. However, the advantages of microalgae do not stop with biofuel production. Researchers have established the use of microalgae across various industries. Commonly, spirulina has been used as a source of protein surpassing protein content per 100 g compared to other protein-rich sources. Similarly, various other microalgae have been used for extracting vitamins, and essential fatty acids, and some are also used as feed for livestock. In recent years, microalgae have also been used in cosmetics for their antioxidant, collagen-boosting properties that can lead to anti-aging benefits. In the supplement industry, microalgae have been used in research as alternatives to mainstream ingredients. Microalgae also have other environmental benefits as they can be used to treat wastewater due to their ability to degrade pollutants and excess nutrients that concentrate in water bodies. With these benefits at hand, they can also be used as an excellent input for the production of biofuels (Razzak et al, 2022; Ramaraj et al, 2015). The figure below shows the various applications of microalgae such as the production of proteins, carbohydrates, biofuels, materials production, etc.

Introduction 
The increase in the concern over the climatic changes as well as the dwindling fossil fuels reserves have intensified the search for the sustainable energy sources. The algal biofuels garnered the attention because of their fastest growth rates, as well as their capability to grow in a non-arable land, higher lipid content, as well as the capability to absorb the CO2. Therefore, the larger scale implementation of the algal biofuels can face a lot of environmental, economic, as well as the technological challenges which needs further investigations (1). One of the current green energy and renewable alternative answers to the world’s current energy problems is the development of algal biofuel (2). Because algae biofuels are environmentally beneficial, they have been seen as a clean energy source (3). An integrated biorefinery strategy could be applied to bio transform algal biomass into many biofuels, including bioethanol, biobutanol, biogas, biohydrogen, and biodiesel, in order to fulfil the energy requirement. Nonetheless, a lot of an obstacles stand in the way of the development, manufacturing, as well as use of microalgal biomass technology. (4). These problems include the creation of affordable microalgal production systems, efficient microalgal growth systems, effective microalgal harvesting techniques that save energy, effective microalgal extraction methods, and economical and environmentally friendly microalgal conversion procedures. Many microalgal technologies are examined in this chapter, along with their applications, difficulties, case studies, and prospects. (5). Algae are appealing feedstock sources for the manufacturing of biofuels. Algae may be applicable to produce important goods like as nutraceuticals, biodiesel, biogas, as well as bioethanol (6). Biofuels are benign to the environment, renewable, and biodegradable. Algae are very valuable because of their higher lipid content as well as fast development. The largest class of algae, known as chlorophytes, includes both macro- and microalgae and is used in bioremediation, the water treatment, the food production, the medicine, as well as the energy production. We discussed many techniques for planting, harvesting, and processing in this chapter. The selection of high lipidcontaining algae strains, commercial harvesting, high infrastructure, operation, and maintenance expenses, and water evaporation problems seem to be the main obstacles. It will take creative and effective methods to make the manufacturing of algae-based biofuels desirable. Increasing the production of biofuels will contribute to the preservation of natural resources, which will protect the environment (7).

The Techno-Economic Analysis (TEA) of nanotechnology-based microalgal biodiesel explores the intersection of nanotechnology and renewable energy production, aiming to assess the economic feasibility and sustainability of integrating nanomaterials into the microalgal biodiesel production process (BlancoCanqui, 2010). As the global demand for sustainable energy sources continues to rise, microalgae have emerged as a promising feedstock for biodiesel production due to their high lipid content and rapid growth rates. Nanotechnology offers innovative solutions to enhance various stages of the microalgal biodiesel production chain, from cultivation and harvesting to lipid extraction and conversion (Moustakas et al., 2020).This introduction provides an overview of the key objectives, methodologies, and implications of conducting a TEA on nanotechnology-based microalgal biodiesel. It outlines the significance of integrating nanomaterials into biodiesel production processes, highlights the potential benefits and challenges associated with nanotechnology adoption, and sets the stage for the subsequent analysis of economic factors and technical considerations (Borowitzka and Moheimani, 2013).The introduction also discusses the broader context of sustainable energy transition and the role of microalgal biodiesel as a renewable alternative to conventional fossil fuels (Gaurav et al., 2017). It emphasizes the importance of evaluating not only the technical feasibility but also the economic viability and environmental sustainability of nanotechnology-enabled biodiesel production methods. By conducting a comprehensive TEA, this study aims to provide valuable insights into the cost-effectiveness, scalability, and market potential of nanotechnology-based microalgal biodiesel, informing strategic decision-making and investment priorities in the renewable energy sector (Gouveia and Oliveira, 2009; McCollum et al., 2018). Through interdisciplinary collaboration and rigorous analysis, the TEA seeks to advance our understanding of the economic and technological factors shaping the future of sustainable biofuel production.

The demand for alternative energy sources is on the rise as a result of global apprehensions regarding the swift exhaustion of fossil fuels, escalating energy usage, and significant environmental challenges (Lijó et al. 2019). Microalgae are regarded as highly favorable raw materials for upcoming energy sources, thanks to their various advantages, including rapid growth rates, elevated lipid contents and resistance to a variation of pH, temperature, light intensity, and salinity (Goswami et al. 2022; Zhang et al. 2022; Wang et al. 2019; Das et al. 2011). As per a recent evaluation of the lipid production efficiency of microalgae biomass, numerous nations could derive their transport fuel (~30%) from microalgae biomass grown on non-agricultural areas (Moody et al. 2014). Apart from their higher lipid production efficiency in contrast to earthly raw materials, microalgae consist of lipids, polysaccharides, pigments, proteins, and nucleic acids, making them versatile raw materials for a range of finalized outcomes, including nutrients, pharmaceuticals, biofuels, and bioplastics (Tang et al. 2020; Kim et al. 2016; Moody et al. 2014; Sharma et al. 2011). Additionally, microalgae are appealing for their efficient sequestration of CO2 during photosynthetic growth (Vargas-Estrada et al. 2020). In contrast to landbased oilseeds, microalgae can be cultivated in freshwater and contaminated or saline locations, eliminating the requirement for substantial nitrogen fertilizer application (Sharma et al. 2022; Rashid et al. 2019; Lam and Lee 2012). The positive attributes of microalgae as raw materials have prompted substantial research endeavours aimed at the commercialization of microalgal biofuels. Regrettably, microalgal biorefineries continue to encounter various technological and economic challenges (Khoo et al. 2020). In essence, nanotechnology involves the invention, creation, and utilization of resources at the nanoscale. Precisely, nanomaterials engineering explores the synthesis and designing of artificial or adorned nanoparticles to drive technological progress and enable applications that would otherwise be impractical. Nanomaterials possess surface areas hundreds of times greater than their weights, significantly enhancing their physico-chemical attributes (Husen and Siddiqi 2014; López-Serrano et al. 2014). Currently, nanotechnology-driven developments, with diverse potential features, have emerged as a burgeoning trend in various industries, including drug delivery, food industry, catalysis, coatings, agriculture, bioremediation, cosmetics, and materials science (Malik et al. 2023). Nanoparticle engineering offers practical and potential solutions to address the problems that arise at different phases of the microalgal biorefinery procedure. For instance, diverse nanomaterials have been proposed as ways to enhance transformation efficacy and the quality of green diesel. The distinctive capabilities of nanoscience and nanomaterial engineering exert a substantial impact on the commercial feasibility of microalgae derived products, including bioactive compounds, oils, lipids, and biofuels (Kumar et al. 2020; Milano et al. 2016). Nanoparticles have the capacity to boost intracellular fatty acid synthesis and complete microalgal biomass, leading to substantial reductions in production expenses. The presence of nanomaterials enhances the efficiency and speed of the microalgae harvesting, and the recoverability and reusability of these materials contribute to improved production efficiency.

Fossil fuel consumption is associated with a number of grave problems, including economic distress and increased greenhouse gas emissions that cause global warming. The world’s population and environment are deeply concerned about these issues, which are a result of rising greenhouse gas emissions and the depletion of fossil fuels. Furthermore, there has been much discussion about the effects of relying so heavily on petroleum-derived fuels on the environment, the economy, and energy efficiency [1]. According, high process costs, inadequate infrastructure, and other technological challenges impede the manufacturing of second- and third-generation biofuels [2]. The main role of enzymes and other microorganisms during fermentation is as a catalyst to speed up the process of turning saccharides into alcohol. In this kind of biofuel production, lignocellulosic and algal material make up the majority of the biomass used to produce ethanol. The biochemical variety of microalgae is employed in numerous biotechnological and commercial applications [3]. The use of non-usable biomass has been enhanced with each new generation, which lowers production costs and speeds up the manufacture of biofuels. A wide variety of biofuels, such as biogas, bioethanol, biohydrogen, and biodiesel, can now be produced thanks to the application of nanotechnology. In order to convert triglycerides into biofuels, two important chemical events must occur: trans-esterification and esterification [4]. The majority of the nano-catalysts needed to produce biofuel come from microbial fuel cells. Nanoparticles, nanosheets, and nanotubes are examples of these nanocatalysts [5]. The utilization of nanotechnology in the biofuel production process holds promise for enhancing the effectiveness of current procedures. Compared to the production of biofuels, the synthesis of nanoparticles is much more interesting due to the potential applications, challenges, and opportunities that it presents [6]. Here, we review the literature on the application of nanotechnology to improve bioenergy production from algae processing. The different kinds of nanoparticles, including metallic, magnetic, metal oxide-based, and carbon nanotubes that are utilised in the production of bioethanol and biodiesel are covered on this page. A focus is placed on the application of these nanomaterials and how they affect the extraction and transesterification of lipids [7]. This chapter makes the connection between the advancement of nanotechnology and its contribution to the creation of a more efficient and sustainable technique for processing algal biomass to produce bioenergy.

The purpose is to make the carbon neutral as fast as possible, which will make the invention of alternative energy sources to replace the fossil fuels. To make world a better place to live, fossil energy is highly needed to be conserved and measures should be made to limit the use of fossil energy. After many researches, the alternate to fossil energy has been made in the form of “BIODIESEL”. Biodiesel, which is produced from renewable resources such as vegetable oil is a new clean alternative to fossil fuel. Biodiesel in the new era of scientific field is mainly produced from Microalgae. Production of biodiesel from microalgae ensures reusing carbon resources from nature. This method contributes to achieve in replacing petroleum use and also helps in reducing pollution in the environment. Biodiesel consist primarily of esters which is formed by methanol or by ethanol and long chains of fatty acids which may be saturated or unsaturated such as palmitic acid, stearic acid, oleic acid and linoleic acid. This is the main and ultimate reason why production and use of biodiesel is attracted the attention of researches worldwide. The biodiesel is developed in three generations that is First, Second and Third generation Microalgae are single-celled organisms which are microscopic. They are an essential component of carbon cycle and they can exploit carbon sources in water and soil efficiently and have plenty of advantages over the other biodiesel sources that are conventional oil crops such as wheat, palm, corns, soybeans, maize and rapeseed. In this century, one of the most important environmental issues is global warming, that is caused by released of greenhouse gases. These microalgae have high rates of biomass production and can survive in a variety of circumstances, such as freshwater, saltwater, and wastewater (Muhammad Abdullah et.al 2024) Their ability to be grown on non-arable ground and their lack of resources competition with food crops are two of their most significant and crucial advantages. The process of producing biodiesel from the microalgae involves many stages. The stepwise structure involves lipid extraction, microalgae cell disruption, harvesting, culture and transesterification. Microalgae re a promising source of biodiesel as they have a high lipid content and can grow quickly. But they are complex in composition and they require a specialized harvesting system. Nanoparticles are an ultrafine unit and have dimensions which are stated in nanometers. These nanoparticles can be detected in the natural environment and can also be generated by human activity. Because of their sub-microscopic size, they boast unique material properties and may be used in many different kinds of fields, namely environmental remediation, engineering and medical care. In 2008, International Organization for Standardization (ISO) defined this nanoparticle as a discrete nano-object in which all the Cartesian dimensions are less than 100nm. Globally, the scarcity of fossil fuels poses a significant challenge. Furthermore, there are significant worries about the negative impacts of the heavy reliance on petroleum-based fuels on the economy, energy and the environment conservation. Consequently, extensive research has been dedicated to identifying alternative sources that can mitigate the dependence on fossil fuels [1]. Biofuels have garnered worldwide attention as a potential substitute for fossil fuel-derived fuels, given their distinctive qualities [2]. Utilizing a variety of plant sources, including sugarcane, corn, soybeans, vegetables, palm oil, and Jatropha (often used in Africa), biofuel production is progressing on almost every continent. Bioethanol is successfully used as a biodiesel in addition to gasoline for otto-cycle engines in nations like the USA and Brazil [3]. Conversely, biodiesel represents a significant category of biofuel capable of partially or fully replacing diesel obtained from fossil fuels. Biodiesel is made via a process called trans-esterification that uses renewable biolipids [4]. Biodiesel can be produced from oil that comes from nonedible agricultural seeds or kernels [5]. Furthermore, edible oils from plants such as sunflower, palm, and soybean are used as feedstocks to produce biodiesel [6]. In the field of biofuel research, nanotechnology and nanomaterials have proven to be useful instruments for improving output quality at a reasonable cost. Algae stands out prominently in discussions about biofuel production due to concerns related to food resources. Types of biofuels and their sources are represented in the (Fig.1). The use of crops and plants yielding food is considered unsuitable for prioritizing biofuel production due to potential disruptions in food supply. Notably, various algal species vary in their production capacity. The utilization of nanoparticles (NPs) is advantageous in biofuel synthesis due to their unique characteristics, including a substantial surface area to volume ratio, adsorption capacity, high crystallinity, and stability. This distinguishes them from competing sources as better possibilities [7]. In the process of creating biofuels, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are widely used as nano-catalysts because of their extra characteristics that allow for their high potential recovery [8]. The overall procedure for producing biodiesel on a small scale and for experimental purposes using algae are shown in the (Fig.2).

Research on biodiesel has shown that utilizing nanotechnology and nanomaterials can be a useful approach to implementing low-cost techniques that improve manufacturing quality. Because of their tiny size and special qualities, such as a high surface area-to-volume ratio, catalytic activity, considerable crystallinity, adsorption capacity, and stability, nanoparticles (NPs) are useful in the generation of biodiesel (2). Because of their high potential recovery properties, metal oxide nanoparticles and carbon nanotubes are frequently used as nanocatalysts in the synthesis of biofuel and biodiesel (3, 4).This chapter critically evaluates the application of nanotechnology in the manufacturing and enhancement of biodiesel, addressing key challenges and potential advancements. Microalgae have been identified as a potentially useful feedstock for biodiesel production. The process of harvesting microalgae can be made much more efficient by employing a range of nanoparticles. Additionally, cost-cutting is facilitated by the recycling of nanomaterials and their incorporation into procedures including cell disruption, extraction, and harvesting. Furthermore, an array of nanocatalysts holds promise for enhancing the efficiency of biodiesel conversion (5). Classification of nanoparticles based on physical attributes as shown in (Fig.1). However, there is a growing emphasis on improving combustion efficiency and reducing harmful emissions in the engine industry and its associated fields. Several studies indicate that the introduction of nanoadditives into blends of diesel and biodiesel fuels has yielded significant results.

Modern energy policies place a strong emphasis on developing low-carbon energy sources while also ensuring that society has enough energy security. However, because fossil fuels play such a vital part in the global energy system, measures to reduce GHG emissions from fossil fuels must be found. Researchers and scientists are examining the characteristics of materials at the nanoscale level to identify compounds that might boost the efficiency of the energy sources we now use. The physical properties of several materials (such as strength, heat conductivity, and reflectance) alter at the nanoscale in comparison to their bulk properties. When compared to their bulk properties, several materials have distinct physical properties at the nanoscale (such as strength, electrical and thermal conductivity, and reflectance). several materials on a nanoscale. Additionally, materials with nanostructures are more suited for material-to-material interactions due to their higher surface to unit weight volume ratio. This is a useful characteristic as many chemical and electrical reactions take place at surfaces and are greatly impacted by the chemical composition of the reactant and the surface’s structure. The goal of nanotechnology research in the fossil fuel industry is to create novel catalysts that will improve the energy efficiency of the fossil fuel breakdown process. Given that heavy crude oil contains sulphur. The transformation of coal into liquid fuels for use in transportation requires the employment of several kinds of catalysts. Furthermore, because of their structure and the presence of electrons in their outer orbitals, which increases the potential for chemical reactions, the majority of typical catalysts used in cars today rely on valuable metals like platinum. Concerns about the supply of precious metals are raised by the industrialised world’s transport networks’ explosive expansion. Finding more affordable and readily available substitutes is imperative given the scarcity and high cost of these materials, and this will be emphasised in the researchers’ upcoming work. Additionally, because of their unique qualities that relate to the phenomena of corrosion resistance or their exceptionally strong qualities that are advantageous in turbomachinery components, nanomaterials are also helpful in power systems (1) . The application of nanotechnology in the production of resistant ceramics for use as insulators in gearbox lines results in smooth coatings that reduce the likelihood of fouling in cooling water intakes. Additionally, nanotechnology can improve a material’s conductivity and produce a superconductor at ambient temperature rather than a superconducting characteristic at very high temperatures. Renewable energy sources—also known as “green energy”—such as solar, wind, and ocean energy— allow countries to reduce their reliance on petroleum and address environmental problems related to the use of fossil fuels. In these technologies, nanotechnology is also employed. Mao and Chen concentrated their research efforts on developing nanotechnologies for a select group of renewable energy sources, including fuel cells, solar cells, hydrogen storage, and hydrogen generation. This research aims to provide a comprehensive comparative analysis of nanotechnology’s application to the development of sustainable energy systems, including nanomaterials, nanofluids, and nanostructures.
