Introduction

Rhizobia and Frankia are soil bacteria that exhibit symbiosis with their particular hosts owing to their ability to understand the intricate signals excreted by the host roots. Rhizobia exhibit symbiosis with legumes and one species member of Ulmaceae family Parasponia andersonii while actinomycetes Frankia forms the group of nitrogen-fixing bacteria that live in symbiosis with a large spectrum of dicot plants distributed among eight families consisting of over 24 genera and around 200 species of angiosperms (Benson and Silvester, 1993) and are collectively responsible for 15% of the biologically fixed nitrogen in the world. This Frankia-woody tree or dicotyledonous plant interaction results in evolution of the actinorhizal plants and the symbiotic interaction is described between Frankia (actino) and plant roots (rhiza).

Introduction

The term actinomycetes, coined in the late 1800s (actins, meaning ‘ray’ and myces, meaning ‘fungus’) is a misnomer. Because actinomycetes have a considerably smaller aerial mycelium than fungi and can produce a large number of asexual spores called conidia, which give the colonies a ‘powdery or chalky’ look.

The actinomycetes constitute a specialized group of soil bacteria that occur in soils throughout the world. The actinomycetes are prokaryotes confirming cellular structures and functions of true bacteria and their morphological similarity to the fungi (Eukaryotes). Between bacteria and fungi, actinomycetes are a transitional category. On their hyphae, most actinomycetes produce single, pairs, or chains of asexual spores.The diameter of the hyphae varies from 0.5 to 1.0 µm. 

The actinomycetes comprise a heterologous group of prokaryotes that have the ability to form gram positive, branching filaments of less than 1μm in d.m. The main animal pathogens in the actinomycetes are in the genera Actinomyces, Arcanobacterium, Actinobaculum, Nocardia and Dermatophilus. Nonpathogenic, prolific producers of antimicrobial substances – streptomyces are also included in Actinomycetes.
Actinomyces
Natural Habitat
The actinomyces species are present on mucous membrane of the host animal, often in the oral cavity, tonsils, and nasopharynx. The soil is the natural habitat of many actinomyces species.
History
The generic name Actinomyces was first used by Harz (1879). Boestrom (1891) isolated Actinomyces bovis. Cummins (1962) clearly demonstrated Actinomyces were bacteria and they are distinct from other branching genera.

Morphology
The organisms show considerable pleomorphism. Actinomyces species are usually long and fialmentousalthough short V, Y, and T configuration also occur. In lesions of actinomycosis, the pus contains small pale yellow granules referred as sulfur granules. The sulphur granule is composed of bacterial filaments and mineralized calcium phosphate of host origin. When the granules are crushed and gram stained, a mass of gram-positive branching filaments about 1μm in width, short rods, and cocci are evident. Around this mass, a circle of club shaped bodies with their narrow ends pointing towards
the centre-staining gram negative. Hence, called ray fungus. They are nonacid fast, non-spore forming, nonmotile, non-capsulated and do not form endospores or conidia.

Every practical problem need not have a documented solution. Most of the times to solve a practical problem, we need to apply our experience, creativity and experiment with the novel solutions in order to address the problem which have no readymade solution. Under such circumstance, we will apply our knowledge and experience in selecting, planning, experimenting and evaluation of the possible solutions. This type of problem solving approach involves action research.  Action research is a type of social research that aims at gaining an insight into the problem by learning from experiences gained in an effort to solve the problem. Here, action itself is a source of knowledge.

8.1. Introduction

Food packaging’s essential functions is to protect the food from hazardous compounds, and contaminant. In order to improve the shelf life of food commodity, smart packaging like active and intelligent packaging has been developed which can monitor freshness, display information of quality, and improve food safety. More precisely, smart packaging was defined by Smart Packaging Journal as “the use of features of high added value that enhance the functionality of a product, notably mechanical, electronic and chemical features that improve safety and efficiency”. The major concerns with traditional packaging are not only shelf life of packaged food, but also the inability of packaging material to convey the important information about quality changes to both customer and manufacturer. 

Abstract

High precision Geodetic Global Positioning System measurements have become important for studying present-day tectonics in active orogenic belts such as the Himalayas. Geodetic Global Positioning System measurements in the Darjiling-Sikkim Himalayas (DSH) during 2000-2004 indicate that the frontal part of the Darjiling Himalaya is locked to the Indian plate and statistically negligible shortening is accumulating there at present. While this observation is in conformity with observations made in Nepal to the west of the DSH, it differs in the fact that about ~ 12 mm/yr of convergence is accommodated in the DSH and the western Bhutan Himalayas as opposed to about ~ 20 mm/yr in Nepal Himalaya. About 16 mm of convergence is accommodated in the Arunachal Himalaya, to the east of DSH, of which about 6 mm is accommodated in the Lesser Arunachal Himalaya. These observations indicate that there is a fair amount of heterogeneity in the way convergence is accommodated along the length of the Himalayan arc and the Himalayan seismic hazard estimations need to account for this. Seismicity patterns in the DSH indicate that active deformation in the area is driven by strike-slip as well as thrust tectonics. Strain accumulation in the DSH during 2000-2004 appears to be dominated by strike-slip tectonics in the region and about ~ 4-5 mm/yr of sinistral strike-slip is observed along a NNE-SSW trending near-vertical fault identified in the area (named as the Gish transverse fault).

Abstract

Northeastern part of the Indian subcontinent is seismically an active region, and is further prone to excessive rainfall and frequent landslides, which cause disruption of the road networks during the monsoonic months every year. The region owns a typical morphotectonic setup where many active thrusts and faults have carved out the landforms and physiography of the major part of the region. The creeping phenomenon of the N-S trending prominent strike-slip fault, namely the Churachandpur - Mao Fault (CMF), is one of the triggering factors for the frequent landslides and low magnitude earthquakes. The life line of Manipur, the national high way NH39, traverses along and in close proximity to this fault in Manipur, and hence the life is paralysed in the area during the monsoonic months. From the GPS campaign mode studies on the western and eastern sides of the CMF, it is observed that there is a change in the crustal velocities from 16 - 22 mm/yr in the east to 33 - 42 mm/yr in the west. Micro-deformations are also observed in the form of displacements respectively with the vertical, N-S and E-W components of–0.111 mm/yr (downward), 0.03 mm/yr (northward) and –0.011 mm/yr (westward). The net displacement is 0.126 mm/yr with an azimuth of N 85° and dipping of 13° towards west. Neotectonic movements along the CMF, as per the GPS measurements, suggest an aseismic nature of the fault with dextral component. Fault plane solutions of the earthquakes show northerly directed principal P-axis indicating the extension (T-axis) along east-west. The resultant creeping of micro-deformation towards the western slopes of the terrain is aligned with the principal T-axis. The creeping triggers the micro seismicity as well as the landslides along the CMF.

When avoidance or tolerance of frost is not possible and frost damage is inevitable, the active methods of frost protection are the way out for the protection of the fruit plantations. The methods which are employed just before or during a frost event for avoiding freeze damage are called Active Frost Protection Methods.

Introduction and Importance of active site

Proteins are polymers of amino acids coupled by peptide bonds. The constituency of a protein that interacts with a ligand is habitually referred to as the “active site.” Ligands can be proteins, DNA or smaller molecules, such as pharmaceutical compounds [1]. The active site generally lies on the surface of the protein. In some cases, the active site is buried within the protein. Residues with reactive groups (ASP, GLU, SER, CYS, HIS, LYS, ARG) tend to be profuse in protein active sites [2]. The SER-HIS-ASP (sometimes SER-HIS-GLU) named as “catalytic triad” which is a motif, generally found in enzyme active site. Enzymes chip in a significant role in scheming the flow of metabolites within a cell, they catalyze virtually all of the reactions that make and modify the molecules mandatory for biological pathways [3]. The identification of catalytic residues is a key step in recognizing the function of enzymes. The site on the surface of an enzyme molecule that binds and acts on the substrate molecule are called as active site.

Abstract

Temperate fruit production in India is mainly confined to the Himalayan region particularly in north-west states namely J&K, HP and Uttaranchal and to the east in Arunachal Pradesh.Though these areas are sparsely populated, yet are the main centers for production of these fruits. Apple is the leading cash fruit among these fruits occupying nearly 85.0 per cent of the total area 90 per cent production under these temperate fruits.

The apple cultivation in these states is more than 100 years old where the English settlers planted acidic types varieties in Kullu, Shimla, Chaubattia and Kodikonal hills. Quality Delicious apples which were introduced by an American Missionary Samuel N.Sokes in 1917 at Kotgarh, form the today’s commercial apple production in H.P. exception Kashmir valley, temperate fruit production in India is in temperate type of climate available in these states due to higher hills experiencing adequate winter cold and snowfall.

The success of a TTO relies on a systematic approach encircling factors like assessment, valuation, marketing, negotiation, and post-transfer management (fi gure 8). This chapter covers the activities that are essential for the effective functioning of a TTO. 3.1 Technology assessment - A pillar of innovation commercialization
The process of transitioning an innovative technology to commercial reality requires a stringent and formal process known as technology assessment. This early stage is crucial as it determines the viability of an invention by analysing practicability of the invention as well as its uniqueness and the likelihood of it being adopted in the target markets. In the absence of this preliminary examination, the chance of technology’s potential being mismatched to the market can arise.
a) Scientific merit and technical feasibility
A key benchmark in assessing technologies involves the identification of
scientific validity and technical performance. An innovation’s viability depends on the fact that it complies with good scientific practice or the innovative application of a new paradigm that has empirically confirmable validity. It is important to determine whether the invention’s underlying mechanism can be reliably proven through established scientific practice. A working prototype allows for empirical testing in different conditions and serves as proof of practical application. In addition to that, scalability has to be tested critically. It often happens that innovations perform well in a controlled laboratory setting but lose efficiency or cost-effectiveness in the case of mass production. The viability of the implementation on a grand scale becomes a core concern in this phase of the evaluation.

Activity patterns of Grey Jungle fowl, Gallus sonneratii were studied at Gudalur Range (9º 37’ N, 77º 16’ E) which is 23² km area in Theni Forest Division, Western Ghats, Tamilnadu from January to December 2005.

The Environment (Protection) Act
In 1986, the Environment (Protection) Act was introduced. Concern over the environment’s declining condition grew, leading to the passage of this act to safeguard it. The goal is to plan, organize, and carry out the long-term requirements for environmental safety as well as to oversee and coordinate the development of an effective system for responding to environmental emergencies.
If we want to protect our environment, we must move far more quickly to execute this legislation. Food cycles are disrupted and species are lost when dangerous substancesare present in the atmosphere and aquatic environments in excess.
The Environment Act of 1986 has a Global Context in Addition to Aignificant Constitutional Ramifications.
• This act put into practice the spirit of declaration approved by the United Nations Conference on Human Environment, held in Stockholm in June 1972.
• In the 1970s, environmental protection gained national priority because to the significant growth in damages.
• Food chains are disrupted and species are lost when there are excessive quantities of dangerous substances in the atmosphere and aquatic habitats.

Acus means needle. It is an ancient Chinese system of therapy utilizing long fine needles at specific points and their stimulation by various means to induce analgesia and to cure certain diseases. The specific points are known as acupuncture points or acupoints.
 
The procedure is safe. There are no post anaesthetic complications and can be used in poor surgical risk patients. The major disadvantage is poor muscle relaxation. Acupuncture has been used to produce local anaesthesia.
 
Acupoints : Alphanumeric code system is used to recognize the acupoints universally e.g. BL, LI, SP, GB etc means meridians of the urinary bladder, large intestine, spleen, gall bladder etc. respectively.

Acute tympany, commonly referred to as bloat, is a serious digestive disorder in ruminants characterized by the rapid accumulation of gas in the rumen,, leading to ruminal distension. If untreated, this condition can cause severe discomfort, respiratory distress, and even death due to circulatory failure or suffocation. Tympany is categorized into two types: frothy bloat and free-gas bloat, each requiring distinct management approaches. Nutritional management is central to preventing and treating acute tympany. This chaper provides an indepth discussion on the causes, pathophysiology, clinical signs, and nutritional
strategies to manage and prevent acute tympany in ruminants.
Types of tympany
1. Frothy bloat: Occurs when gas produced during fermentation becomes trapped in a stable foam, preventing its release through eructation (belching). It is associated with diets high in lush legumes (e.g., alfalfa, clover) or finely ground grains.
2. Free-gas bloat: It results from physical or functional obstruction of the esophagus or impaired eructation mechanisms. Common causes include esophageal obstruction, hypocalcemia, or damage to rumen motility.

Introduction

The egg production in India is 75 billion and the broiler production is 4.2 million tonnes per annum. The growth rate of layer market is 6-7 percent per annum and broiler market is 8-10 percent per annum. The Indian poultry sector is valued at INR 1 lakh cr or USD 15.38 bn. Approx. 80 percent of egg production is contributed by commercial poultry farms, remaining comes from household/ backyard poultry. Backyard poultry plays a key role in supplementary income generation and family nutrition to the poorest of the poor. It is estimated that there are around 30 million farmers engaged in backyard poultry as per 19^th Livestock Census. Backyard poultry are being practiced for its inherent strengths. Free range birds reared by the farmers have the advantage of small body size, coloured plumage, broodiness to hatch chicks, adaptation to harsh climatic condition, lower diseases and production with least investment. The birds are scavenging in the backyard, supplemented by kitchen waste and are kept in low height houses for shelter using locally available materials. It helps to improve the nutritional status of rural poor and also improve the subsidiary income of the poor people. Such stocks make minimal use of land, labour and capital and integrate well into the backyard. Backyard poultry production system is self-sustaining because of minimal needs and can be afforded by poor people of the rural areas. The high yielding white feathered chicken varieties being reared in the intensive poultry farming are not suitable for backyard / free range backyard poultry farming due to the adverse climatic and high pathogen load prevailing in such rearing practices. Backyard poultry farming is an in-separable part of the poor tribal people and it will continue to be due to its advantages. Although backyard poultry production is not an occupation per se, it often supplements household income, primarily for poor families. Strengthening backyard poultry production may help overcome poverty and malnutrition in impoverished communities. However, the effect of climate change on these birds needs to be studied for its sustenance.

The oceans covering nearly 71% of earth surface are classified into several zones. There are different zones such as neritic zone, oceanic zone. Neritic zone consists of different zones. Which are present in bank side of ocean. The oceanic zone forms two major zones as pelagic and the benthic zones. In the pelagic zone the organisms float or swim freely on the surface and in the benthic zone they associations are widely different and there is no light, water is called dark zone water or aphotic this constitute the deep sea fishes which found in the bottom of the sea the region between 200-1000 meters is called as the mesopelagic zone. The part of the ocean below 1000 meters is called bathypelagic zone and the deepest part of the deepwater is called benthic zone. Mesopelagic, bathypelagic and benthic zone constitute the deep sea water. A large number of species of fish in habits the deep sea. Fishes living in the deep water of the oceans are exposed to more or less uniform conditions of life and they are adapted differently.

Introduction

It is an established fact that water in terms of direct deficit (drought) as well as water surfeits (flooding and water logging) and poor irrigation water quality (salinity)- are major constraints on the use of solar energy for food, feed and fiber production in almost all the agricultural regions of the world. The various biophysical, physiological, genetic, agronomic and ecological aspects of plant water relations have been thoroughly reviewed in recent years with the objective aimed at water availability as a constraint on crop production. This review will attempt a limited synthesis of these aspects, drawing mainly from research on drought resistance in grain crops, rice in particular, and emphasizing the progress- theoretical and practical- that could result from collaboration between physiologists, geneticists and plant breeders. A central theme will be research and development aimed at fitting crop plants to fluctuating drought prone environments. It is noteworthy that shortage of water restricts crop productivity all over the world-not just in those areas classified as arid or semiarid, but in any area in which the evaporative demand exceeds rainfall during the growing season. As such, the interaction between genotype and environment in situations has an important bearing affecting the physiology and also biochemistry at cellular level vis-à-vis the crop phenology. Cultivars with better ability to access soil water and improved water use efficiency could increase yields in an economic and environmentally sustainable way.

1. Wasteland

Introduction

In the vast tapestry of Earth’s landscapes, certain areas have been relegated to the sidelines, deemed unproductive and often dismissed as wastelands. However, the term “wasteland” carries a complexity that extends beyond mere barrenness; it encapsulates a narrative of neglect, degradation, and, crucially, the latent potential for transformation.

The Dynamic Nature of Wasteland

At its core, a wasteland is a geographical space characterized by low productivity, often manifesting in barren, unproductive landscapes. The term, however, fails to encapsulate the dynamic and evolving nature of these areas. Wastelands can result from a confluence of natural processes and human activities, making them heterogeneous entities requiring careful examination (fig 1).

9.1 Introduction

Background increase in anthropogenic emissions of Greenhouse gases, associated climate change and its global consequences are issues of concern. The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (FAR) reveals that warming of the climate system is evident from the increase in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of ice and the rising global average sea level. The report states that the global mean temperature may increase between 1.4 and 5.8^oC by 2100, which will have severe impact on the global hydrological system, other ecosystems, the sea level, and agriculture. The impact could be particularly severe in tropical countries including India. Thus climate change is unavoidable and associated weather extremes such as high temperature and heat waves; increase frequency of droughts and high intensity rainfall causing flood are the issues of concern for Indian Agriculture.

Protection from natural enemies and adverse environmental and climatic conditions is vital to safeguard insects and to this effect, insects possess a great variety of protective structures and mechanisms without which they cannot survive.

    i)    Food. Each insect species has certain nutritional requirements for the completion of life cycle. If the required food for any particular species gets reduced in a particular locality, that species will gradually disappear from that locality, though other environmental conditions may be favorable. Under normal conditions, there may be sufficient food for the insect to live on and continue its race. In the event of sudden increase in the population of an insect, the density of the population becomes too high to be supported by the food available in the area. Under such conditions, some individuals of the species either migrate to other suitable areas where enough food is available or else starve, if the species has limited power  of  dispersal  as  in  the  case  of  many  coccids.  According  to  the nutritional requirements insects are characterized as ‘omnivorous’ (feeding on different kinds of both plant and animal food), ‘carnivorous’ (feeding on animal food) and ‘herbivorous’ or ‘phytophagous’ (feeding on living plants). Those insects, which feed on many cultivated and wild species of plants, are termed ‘polyphagous’ (e-g) Locusts, grasshoppers, cutworms etc. If the feeding activities of a particular species of insect are confined only to plants of one botanical family, it is termed ‘oligophagous’ (e-g) cabbage butterfly - Pieris brassicae. When only a single species of plants constitute the food of a particular species of insect, it is termed ‘monophagous’ (e-g) Brinjal fruit borer.

Innate immunity provides the first line of defense against invading pathogens. But if the pathogens are able to escape from the first line of defense mechanisms, the body uses, another set of immune mechanisms which provide defense in a more specialized manner. These are called second line of defense mechanisms. The second line of defense mechanisms are highly specific in nature. These are called adaptive immune response and provide adaptive immunity. It is also called acquired immunity since these immune responses are not present prior to the exposure of the microbes. When the body is exposed to foreign substances or microorganisms, body develops adaptive immune responses. Adaptive immunity is a set of specialized cells and processes that function to eliminate pathogens or prevent their growth.

Abstract

The paper presents findings of a field study to determine the agricultural and socio-economic impact of climate change on the mountain farmers’ apple economy. The study investigates the positive and negative effects of climate change on mountain farmers’ economy. It revealed how mountain farmers in a valley were forced to abandon apple farming which destroyed their farm economy and at the same time how same climate change brought new economic opportunities. The study findings also indicate that opportunities brought by climate change seem to have a time scale. This research attempts to piece together evidence and aims to enhance our understanding of climate change impacts as observed by farming communities at very local levels. The growing threat of global warming and its effects and prevailing obscurities about the future of agriculture are all addressed in this investigation.

It covers environmental benefits, economic and operational advantages, additive manufacturing technologies, sustainable applications, life-cycle assessment, environmental impact analysis, challenges, and design strategies. Industry trends, case studies, sustainability standards, and future research directions are also considered. In the context of green composites, additive manufacturing can support flexible fabrication and potentially improve material utilization and product customization. The chapter emphasizes the need to evaluate manufacturing technologies across their complete environmental and economic life cycle.

ABSTRACT

The use of Geographic information system to locate groundwater possible zone in Valapadi taluk of Salem was carried out using remote sensing and geophysical studies. The remote sensing methods involved in the visual interpretation of the satellite images for hydrogeomorphological and hydro structures favourable for groundwater. The geophysical method involved vertical electrical soundings to predict the sub-surface variation and to locate the water domain. Three geoelectric layers were delineated from the interpretation of vertical electrical sounding data and the map of the above results predict the depth extent of groundwater zone. The spatial distribution of the above results was identified through GIS.

Introduction

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) represents a critical public health crisis, with far-reaching implications for human, animal, and environmental health. If unchecked, by 2050, the global toll of AMR-related deaths could exceed 10 million, with Asia and Africa alone projected to account for approximately 4 million fatalities. In a potential ‘superbug’ outbreak scenario, the economic loss could reach as high as USD 100 trillion, especially impacting low- and middle income countries (LMICs) like India (O’Neill, 2014). AMR complicates the treatment of a wide array of infections, transforming previously manageable conditions into fatal threats. In 2019 alone, AMR was directly responsible for approximately 1.27 million deaths and contributed to an additional 5 million fatalities—surpassing the mortality rates of major infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and malaria (Murray et al., 2022). The urgency of addressing AMR is underscored by a World Bank report, which warns that unchecked AMR could cause a global GDP decline of 1.1% to 3.8% by 2050, and averting this scenario may require an estimated annual investment of around 9 billion USD (Aslam et al., 2024).

Global agricultural research, an essential field in ensuring food security and sustainable development, is heavily influenced by the academic and publishing ecosystems in Europe and North America. This chapter examines the challenges faced by researchers from developing regions, focusing on limited representation in editorial boards, barriers to accessing high-impact journals, and the overarching dominance of Western institutions (Fig. 9.1).
These issues underscore the need for greater inclusivity and recognition of regional expertise to foster a more equitable global research landscape.
9.1. Dominance of Europe and North America in Agricultural Research
Publishing
The dominance of Europe and North America in agricultural research publishing is evident from the distribution of international journals in agriculture and allied disciplines. Approximately 75% of these journals originate from these regions. Breaking this down further:
• Europe accounts for 43.6% of international journals, with leading contributors including the United Kingdom (14.1%), the Netherlands (8.5%), Germany (6.2%), France (4.3%), Italy (3.5%), and other European countries (7.0%).

Farmers face financial uncertainties, climate-related challenges, market fluctuations, labor shortages, and social isolation, all of which contribute to mental health struggles. Recognizing and addressing these issues is crucial for improving the well-being of farmers and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
Common Mental Health Challenges Faced by Farmers Farmers often experience high levels of stress, anxiety, and depression due to the demanding nature of their profession. Some of the primary mental health challenges include:
1. Financial Stress: Unpredictable weather conditions, fluctuating market prices, and increasing input costs lead to financial instability. This burden contributes to anxiety and, in severe cases, suicidal thoughts.
2. Isolation and Loneliness: Farming is often a solitary occupation, leading to social isolation. Limited interactions with peers can result in a lack of emotional support.
3. Climate-Related Stress: Droughts, floods, and extreme weather conditions directly impact crop yields and livestock health, exacerbating stress levels.
4. Physical Exhaustion: The physically demanding nature of farming can lead to chronic fatigue, increasing the risk of mental health issues.
5. Stigma and Lack of Awareness: Mental health is still a taboo subject in many rural communities, preventing farmers from seeking professional help.
6. Work-Life Imbalance: Long working hours and the pressure to sustain agricultural production leave little time for personal and family life, causing emotional distress.

Adenoviruses have been found in several species of birds and animals. There are at least 12 serotypes of chicken adenoviruses. CALIBRATION OF SEED DRILL
Calibration of a seed drill refers to the process of testing the seed drill to ensure it delivers the correct seed rate. Before using the seed drill in the field, calibration is essential to achieve the desired seed rate. This procedure is done to ensure that the machine delivers the predetermined seed rate accurately. The following steps are followed for the calibration of a seed drill.
Procedure for Calibration of a Seed Drill
• Determine the nominal width (W) of seed drill .

Where, M = Number of furrow openers
S = Spacing between the openers, m
• Find the length of the strip (L) having nominal width (W) necessary to cover 1/25 ha (1 /25 x 10000 m2).
L = 400/W meter
• Determine the number of revolutions (N) of the ground wheel of the seed drill
required to cover the length of the strip (L).
L = P x D x N = 400/W
N = 400/P x D x W revolutions per minute
• Jack the seed drill so that the ground wheels turn freely. Make a mark on the drive wheel and a corresponding mark at a convenient place on the body of the drill to help in counting the revolutions of the ground wheel.
• Fill the selected seed in the seed hopper. Place a container under each boot for collecting the seeds dropped from the hopper.

Effectiveness of spray mixtures can be increased by addition of adjuvants. Weed Science Society of America (WSSA1994) have defined adjuvant as a material in a herbicide formulation or added to the spray tank to modify herbicidal activity or application characteristics. Adjuvants enhance activity of a herbicide in different ways viz., wetting, spreading, deposit building, emulsifying or deflocculating the active ingredient. In many cases cost of adjuvant will be less than that of active ingredient. In such cases it helps to reduce the cost of the final product.

Honeybees are marvelous insects known to mankind since the prehistoric times. The art of their scientific management is called as apiculture or beekeeping and the place where hives are maintained is called apiary. Beekeeping is a decentralized, forest and rural agriculture based industry, which does not require any raw material. The raw material needed is in the form of nectar and pollen, which is freely available from flowers in nature. Bee hives neither demand additional land space nor do they compete with agriculture or animal husbandry for any input. The beekeeper only needs to spare a few hours in a week to look after his bee colonies. Beekeeping is therefore ideally suited to him as a part-time occupation. Beekeeping constitutes a source of sustainable income for the rural and tribal farmers. It also provides them valuable nutrition in the form of honey. However, in addition to honey, production of bees wax, propolis, pollen, royal jelly, pedigree queen bees, package bees and renting out honey bee colonies for crop pollination are some of the potential areas of apicultural diversification in India (TOI, 2012).

Sustainable sericulture has to take more care about retaining or rebuilding soil quality and health, since it is very high drain on the nutrient content of soil. Sustainability should an evolution criterion in the process of identifying, screening and adopting techno-biological solutions to the sericultural problems. Greater attention should be paid to learn from the indigenous knowledge. In many of the government-sponsored programmes sericulture has been regarded as one of the essential tool for the rural development in the country. As the activities in the sericulture are capable enough to engage the households completely throughout the year and is ideally suited for improving the socioeconomic standards of the rural poor and has often been utilized under various employment programmes in India. As a result, sericulture is being intensively promoted in traditional states like Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal and J & K.

This chapter tries to find out the constraints in adoption of sericulture as subsidiary enterprise the farmers in the Poonch district of Jammu & Kashmir. Since sericulture is not a major activity in the district and farmers never reluctant to cultivate mulberry in their land and allow only dry land for plantation of mulberry and hardly take care thereafter. Under such circumstances the mulberry grows with lesser leaves production and farmers always faced acute shortage of mulberry leaves during silkworm rearing and they did not get the expected return out of the sericulture. Land, water, proper training of mulberry plants, application of fertilizers guarantee high production and productivity over a wide range in the same areas would qualify to be called as sustainable sericulture system in dry/hilly areas. Besides, other components of technology that can ensure sustainability are soil and water conservation, pests control etc.

Adoption

Adoption is a decision to make full use of an innovation as the best course of action available.

Steps in adoption process

Ryan and Gross (1943) were probably the first to recognize that the adoption of a new idea consisted of stages. They distinguished between awareness of hybrid seed cron conviction of its usefulness, trial acceptance and complete adoption of the innovation.

Adoption is essentially a decision making process. According to Johnson and Haver (1955), decision making involves the following steps.

Innovation as a new idea, method, or object may be developed by research or by a farmer. Diffusion is a special type of communication on innovations. The proper use of innovation is called adoption. Communication is different from diffusion in the sense that communication covers all types of messages whereas diffusion is concerned with a message of new ideas. The extension workers need to understand the meaning of diffusion, adoption processes, innovation, etc. by which farmers accept new ideas. Adoption is a sequence of thoughts and actions which an individual goes through before s/he finally adopts a new idea. The adoption process is a mental process for passing the new idea to final adoption. In the diffusion process, the new idea spreads from its source of invention or creation to its ultimate users or adopters. Perception is an activity through which an individual becomes aware of objects around oneself and of events taking place.

Elements in the Diffusion of Innovations

The four main elements in the diffusion of innovations are innovation, communication channels, time, and social systems.

The Innovation

Innovation is a new idea expressed in terms of knowledge, persuasion of decision for adoption. The perceived attributes of innovations are relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability.

Relative advantage: The innovation should have a relative advantage over the existing ideas in terms of economic and social-prestige factors, convenience, and satisfaction. The advantage can be influenced by providing various incentives.

Compatibility: The innovation should be compatible with the socio-cultural values and beliefs of people.

In rural development, the sole aim is to transfer the technology for better living of people. The process by which the technology is transferred to users is called Transfer of Technology. Transfer of technology falls in the domain of adoption and diffusion. Therefore, it is necessary to understand adoption and its related issues. Adoption of sustainable agricultural practices is relatively difficult as people do not find newness in it. The transfer of technology is explained in terms of technology movement from place of generation to the hands of the users.

Introduction

Rice is considered as the most important crop of India both in terms of area as well as value of output. It is estimated to contribute about 2.5 per cent of Gross Domestic Product (GDP) of India and provides employment to a large work force in crop production and in paddy processing.

According to Reinsurance Company ‘Munich Re (2001), costs associated with natural disasters has gone up 14 fold since the 1950. Every year from 1991 to 2001, an average of 211 million people in the world were killed or affected by natural disaster. Described as one of the “Worst Disasters” in recent history the Tsunami travelled 4,500 km across the Indian Ocean in a period of about seven hours causing damage to twelve countries including Sri Lanka, India and Thailand most dramatically impacted, The FAO estimates that in the countries hardest hit by the disaster (Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Maldives, India and Thailand), a total of 47,000 ha of agricultural land has been damaged (FAO, 2005).

The most significant commercially grown fruit crop in the country is the mango (Mangifera indica L.), which belongs to the Anacardiaceae family. It’s known as the “king of fruits.” Mango cultivars can be found in the greatest variety in India. Mango farming is thought to have begun in South East Asia. Since about 6,000 years ago, mango has been grown in south Asia.Mango is native to South Asia, from where it has been distributed worldwide to become one of the most cultivated fruits in the tropics.

The major mango-growing states are Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar, Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. Andhra Pradesh rank 1st in area, whereas Uttar Pradesh rank 1st in production and productivity. Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, West Bengal and Gujarat together contribute for about 82% of the total production in India.

India to become the second largest fruit producer in the world, after china, with a production of 102481 thousands metric tonnes of fruits from an area of 6930 thousands hectares in 2020-21.The fruit is grown in India, the total area under mango cultivation was 2317 thousand hectare with an annual production of 20386 thousand metric tonnes.(NHB 2020-21).

Mango is well adopted in tropical and sub-tropical climates but it can be grown up to 1,100 meters above sea-level. There should not be humidity, rain or frost during flowering. The temperature between 24 and 270C is ideal for its cultivation. Higher temperature during fruit development and maturity gives better quality fruits. The areas expressed frequent showers and high humidity is prone to many pests and diseases. Thus it can grow best in regions with a rainfall between 25cm and 250 cm. Regions having bright sunny days and moderate humidity during flowering is ideal for mango growing.The farmers 92.20 per cent had problems of pests in their mango trees. The most common pests were the mango seed weevil 48.10 per cent, fruit fly 36.40 per cent, trips 1.30 per cent, aphids 1.30 per cent and the most common diseases were the powdery mildew 46.80 per cent, anthracnose 18.20 per cent and scab 2.60 per cent (Gitonga,2010).

The hot arid regions of India are spread over 32 million ha (0.32 million Sq.Km.) in the state of Rajasthan (61%), Gujarat (20%), Andhra Pradesh (7%), Punjab (5%), Haryana (4%), Karanataka (3%), and Maharashtra(0.4%) which are characterized by hostile agro-climatic conditions and fragile eco-system. Out of total hot arid area of the country (India), more than 60% area falls under the state of Rajasthan which covers 12 districts viz., Jaisalmer, Barmer, Bikaner, Churu, Sikar, Jhunhjunu, Naguar, Jodhpur, Pali, Jalor, Sriganganagar, and Hanumangarh of the state. In general, the hot arid region of Rajasthan receives very low rainfall, varies from 100 mm annun^-1in north-western district of Jaisalmer to 450 mm per annum in the eastern boundaries of arid district of Rajasthan. The potential evapo-transpiration varies from 2063 mm in Jaisalmer to 1503 mm in Sikar districts of Rajasthan. The rainfall is very erratic and often experienced prolong drought. The ground water table is very deep and often brackish in nature. The extremes of temperature having severe winter during December-January with temperature as low as -4 °C and very hot summer during May-June with temperature as high as 48-50 °C is another important characteristic of the hot arid regions. The solar radiation is very high. Atmospheric vapour pressure deficit reaches as high as 30 mb during summer (May-June). The wind velocity in June is very high which leads to heavy wind erosion and formation of sand dunes. Some time strong sand storms of very high speed (60-0 km h^-1) with huge amount of sand particles also occurs. The soils are coarse textured with low silt, clay and humus content and water holding capacity is very low and infiltration rate is very high. The soil fertility is very poor having low organic carbon (0.02-0.06%).

Country has vast network of 20 river basins with utilizable surface and groundwater resources of 1123 billion cubic meter (BCM). With the rising population, the per capita availability of water in India has declined from 5178 m³/year in 1951 to 1441 m³/year in 2015. About 60% of Indian population have per capita water availability close to or lower than the water scarcity threshold of 1000 m³/year. The per capita water availability will further decline to 1139 m³/year with increase in population. On the demand side, the gross water requirement for all users in India is expected to grow up to 1447 BCM in 2050 (CWC, 2010, GoI, 2015). With the massive financial investment by the governments and the farmers, net irrigated area in the country increased from 20.85 million hectare (Mha) in 1950-51 to 68.38 Mha in 2014-15 (DES, 2019). Although India is a world leader in irrigation infrastructure, still half of the total cropped area (51%) remains rainfed. Among the various vegetable crops, tomato (Lycopersicurn esculentum) is one of the important and popular vegetable and plays an important role in balanced nutrition and hence it is called as `poorman’s orange’. Tomato fruits can be seen in the market round the year. In India, tomato occupies an area of 2,90,279 ha with the productivity of 15.85 t/ha and production of 46,03,446 tonnes (www.nhb.gov.in). Among the different districts of Tamil Nadu, Salem district has an area of about 6311 hectares under tomato with 17,359 tonnes of production. Pest management is one of the important dimensions in cultivating tomato crop that needs significant attention. The objective of pest management technologies are maximize pest control in terms of overall economical, social and environmental values. In order to restore ecological balance, it is necessary to integrate all the available pest management techniques in the most compatible manner with the least use of chemicals which is the principle of pest management. ‘Pest management technology’ utilizes all suitable techniques and methods in a compatible manner as possible and maintains the pest population below their economic injury levels given by Bikramjit et al. (2007).

8.1. Ecological Soundness

Conservation of natural resources essentially means maintenance and improvement of ecological status and not permitting them for further degradation. The natural resources are soil, water, forest, mountain and animal resources. An attempt was made to find out whether the respondents adopt certain recommendations for preservation of these natural resources irrespective of source of advice.

i. Soil Health

Soil is considered as an important ingredient of ecological soundness of an area. Adoption of soil health measures, like adding of organic manures, following of crop rotations, use of balanced chemical fertilizers, green manure and bio- fertilizers are some of the recommendations to maintain soil health.
