Naïve panel : It refers to the sensory evaluation panel that has not been trained specifically regarding the product evaluation being undertaken in the study.
Nano technology : It is the art of manipulating materials on an atomic or molecular scale to build microscopic devices. The word “nano’ meaning ‘dwarf” in Greek language refers to dimension / magnitude of the material / particle in the order of 10^-9. Nanotechnology is nothing but manipulating of particles into very small particles called nano-particles. These particles have dimensions in the scale of nano-meter and used to design / build materials and devices. Nanotechnology has been provisionally defined as relating to materials, systems and processes which operate at a scale of 100 nanometers (nm) or less. Nanotechnology is an anticipated manufacturing technology that allows through and inexpensive control of the structure of matter by working with atom. It will allow many things to be manufactured at low cost and with no pollution. The concept of nanotechnology was first given by Nobel Laureate physicist Richard P. Feynman in Southern California in 1959. Nanotechnology is sometimes termed as Molecular Manufacturing based nanotechnology “MNT”.

Naphthalene Acetic Acid (NAA): Is represented which is a synthesised auxin.
Naphthalene ring/molecule: Two benzene rings condense to give the naphthalene molecule/ring.
Natality (birth-rate): i) It refers to the production of new individuals by birth or hatching. The natality rate is the number of young ones produced per female. ii) Refers to number of young individuals born or hatched per unit of time. iii) Refers to an organism or population of organisms that occurs naturally (i.e., independent of human activity) in an area.
Natural forest: A forest composed of indigenous trees and not classified as forest plantation.

Nanometre : The unit of length specifically applied to wavelengths of radiation. This is equal to ten Angstrom units or 10-9 meters.

Net Assimilation Rate (NAR) : It is increase in dry weight of plant per unit leaf area per unit time. NAR is calculated from the following equation : 

Objective synonym: An absolute or nomenclatural synonym resulting from the proposal either of a replacement name for a supposedly preoccupied name or of names based on the same specimen, illustration, or taxonomic entity (cf. Synonym, Subjective synonym).

Obligate parasite: A parasite that requires a living host to survive and reproduce and which cannot exist in any other way.

Obligatory: Compulsory, or exclusive; e.g. obligatory diapause is a resting stage that occurs in every individual of each individual of each generation of a univoltine insect.

Oblique sternals: Lateral abdominal muscles in other than longitudinal or dorsal-ventral orientation

Oak: A hard, durable, and very strong wood used for many purposes like furniture, flooring, decoration etc.

Octane number: It is the percetage of iso-octane (C₈H₁₈) in the mixture of iso-octane and normal heptane (C₇H₁₆), when it produces the same knocking effect as the fuel under test. It is used to indicate the octane rating of a gasoline, describes the anti-knock properties of a fuel when used in an internal combustion engine. Knock is a secondary detonation that occurs after fuel ignition due to heat buildup in some other part of the combustion chamber. When the local temperature exceeds the auto ignition temperature, knock occurs.

Octane rating: A measure of the antiknock properties or engine knock resistance of a gasoline. The higher the octane rating, the more resistant the gasoline is to abnormal combustion.

Octane requirement: The fuel octane number needed for efficient operation (without knocking or spark retardation) of an internal combustion engine.

Odorization: A process of adding a distinctive odor to natural gas so that its presence can be easily detected.

Obesity : A condition characterized by the excessive accumulation and storage of fat in the body. It is a physiological disorder having high body mass index (BMI), which can be expressed as a mathematical formula in which a person’s body weight in kilogram is divided by the square of his or her height in meters.

O horizon: A soil layer dominated by organic materials occurring at the surface of the soil. 

Oblique Aerial Photographs: An oblique photographis one which has been taken with the optical axis of the camera intentionally tilted from perpendicular position obliquely. The degree of tiltfrom the perpendicular further classifies oblique photographs into high oblique photograph and low oblique photograph. A high oblique photograph is one which is taken with the optical axis of the camera making an angle >30^° with the vertical axis and which shows the apparent horizon on the photograph.

O antigen      :    A polysaccharide antigen extending from the outer membrane of some gram-negative bacterial cell walls; it is part of the lipopolysaccharide.

Oa    :    Open access.

Oasis effect : Vertical energy transfer from the air to the crop. It is the exchange of heat between a growing crop and hot air whereby air over the crop is cooled.
 
Observation : In meteorology, the evaluation of one or more meteorological elements, such as temperature, pressure, or wind, that describe the state of the atmosphere, either at the earth’s surface or aloft. An observer is one who records the evaluations of the meteorological elements.
 
Occluded Front : Also known as an occlusion, it is a complex front formed when a cold front overtakes a warm front. It develops when three thermally different air masses conflict. The type of frontal boundary they create depends on the manner in which they meet.

Pacemaker: A region from which waves of contraction in the heartbeat cycle are propagated.

Paedogenesis: Reproduction by the juvenile form; the production of eggs or young by an immature or larval stage of an animal; reproduction by larviform individuals.

Paeudotrachea: A ridged groove on the ventral surface of the labellum of some higher Diptera, used to take up liquid food.

Page precedence: The principle that when two or more conflicting homonyms or synonyms are published in the same work (or portion of a work) and, as a consequence, are of the same date, the names shall have priority according to the sequence in which they first appear in the work (or portion) concerned.

Paint gun: Type of small, hand-carried, air-blast machine.

Pair-wise coevolution: see Specific coevolution.

Packing: 1. The material, which is enclosed in a stuffing box for the purpose of preventing leakage around a piston rod. 2. The act or process of inserting packing material. 3. Blocking up.

Paddy dehusker: An equipment to remove husk from paddy grain. It is also known as paddy Sheller.

Paddy separator: A machine, which is used for the separation of brown rice from the paddy brown rice mixture.

Paddy thresher, pedal operated: Equipment used for threshing of paddy crop, consisting of mainly a balanced cylinder with series of threshing teeth fixed on slats and worked by a pedal and gear drive mechanism.

Pack inspection : It is similar to continuous inspection except that here inspector(s) may make in-process checks during different processing operations under contract but not required to be present all the times in the plant during operation.

Package : The package means a pre packed box, tin, barrel, pouch or can etc in which food article is packed.

Package store : A store that sells bottled or canned alcoholic beverages for consumption off the premises.

Palatable: Having a good or at least a tolerable flavour. Some plants, although not poisonous, simply do not taste good and animals avoid them, for example, the leaves of Prosopis juliflora. Others are so highly palatable that establishing the tree can become difficult, for example, Leucaena leucocephala. Hence ‘palatability’. See also Digestibility.

Palm: Member of the aracaceae (previously palmae) family, containing over 200 genera and more than 2700 species, many of them economically important for food, fibre, canes, waxes, wood, thatch, and so forth. Typical agroforestry tree.

Pan Coefficient (Kp) : It is the ratio between reference evapotranspiration (ET_o ) and water loss by evaporation from an open water surface of a pan (E_pan ).

Peat soil : An organic soil containing more than 50 per cent organic matter.

Pan Evaporation : is the value of evaporation from an open pan evaporimeter (usually from standard USWB, class ‘A’ pan evaporimeter) during a day or specified period at a place.

Parcel : A volume of air small enough to contain uniform distribution of its meteorological properties and large enough to remain relatively self-contained and respond to all meteorological processes.

Quadrangle: A cell immediately beyond the arculus (Odonata, Zygoptera).

Quadrat: A four-sided defined area from which a sample is collected, used in population determination.

Quadrivoltine: Four life cycles per year.

Qualitative defenses of plants: Toxins and small-molecular-weight compounds (such as alkaloids) that are active against the physiological systems of phytophagous insects; complex, digestibility-reducing substances (such as tannins) that reduce the ability of insects to feed on plants.

Quantitative specificity: In serology, the principle that a given kind of antibody will react more strongly, under comparable conditions, with the particular kind of antigen used in its formation than with any other substance (cf. Antibody, Antigen, and Precipitin reaction).

Quadrangle: A square or quadrangular space surrounded by buildings, as on college grounds.

Quadrant: 1. The quarter of a circle, an arc of 90°. 2. An instrument for measuring altitudes.

Quadrilateral: A plane figure with four sides and four angles.

Quarter turn belt: The arrangement of a belt to drive two shafts, which are at right angle.

Quarter turn drive: A belt drive connecting pulleys whose axes are at right angles.

Quartering machine: A machine that bores parallel holes simultaneously in such a way that the centre lines of adjacent holes are at 90 deg. apart (axes of the holes are perpendicular to the plane on which an angular measurement are taken.)

Q fever : Q fever is caused by a rickettsia like organism (RLO), a parasitic organism falling between bacteria and viruses. It is a disease that is characterized by high fever, chills, muscular pains, headache, and sometimes pneumonia, that is caused by a rickettsia (Coxiella burnetii) of which domestic animals serve as reservoirs, and that is transmitted to humans especially by inhalation of infective airborne bacteria as in contaminated dust.

Qine: A character gradient. A gradual change in one or more characters between adjacent parts of a population. Such variation in a character is called “clinal variation.” See Ecotype; Race.

Quadrat: i) An ecological sampling unit of any kind. ii) A small field study unit or sample area, usually a square meter or a milliacre (1/1000th acre) in size, established for the purpose of detailed observation.

Quadrangle: A standard map size and scale used by the U.S. Geological Survey (TWS).

Quadrat, denuded: A quadrat from which the vegetation has been completely removed at least once.

Q    :    Ubiquinone (coq).

Q    :    Every.

Q fever      :    An acute zoonotic disease caused by the rickettsia Coxiella burnetii.

Q₁₀ : The number of times the rate of a process (physical, chemical or physiological) increases with a 10^ºC increase in temperature. If the rate of the process is doubled Q₁₀ is 2. Q₁₀ for respiration is 2 to 3.

Quantum : Unit of energy emitted by a photon.

Quantum Flux Density : The number of quanta from a source, incident on a unit area of a small surface situated in a perpendicular direction.

Quantum Irradiance : The number of quanta from a source incident on a unit area of a surface. This differs from the ‘quantum flux density’ as far as direction is concerned.

Race: A subspecific category that is based on particular attributes, such as behavioral or physiological (other than morphological) differences; similar to a subspecies; often used in describing plant pathogens.

Race: Subspecies (q.v.).

Race: A naturally occurring group within a species usually visually indistinguishable but with some physiological difference from other members of the species, e.g., with a different plant host range. cf. strain.

Radial cell: A cell bordered anteriorly by a branch of the radius; the marginal cell (Hymenoptera).

Radial cross vein: A cross vein connecting R₁ and the branch of the radius immediately behind it.

Radial sector: The posterior of the two main branches of the radius.

Radiation: See Adaptive radiation.

Rabbet: A rectangular groove or cut made in the edge of a board, so that another similar cut may fit into it to form a rabbet joint.

Rack and pinion: A gear arrangement consisting of a toothed bar that meshes with a pinion. These are used to transform circular motion in to rectilinear motion and vice versa.

Rack and pinion steering: A steering system in which the rotation of pinion gear at the end of the steering column moves a toothed bar (the rack) left or right to transmit steering movements.

Radial arm: The movable cantilever, which supports the drilling saddle in a radial drilling machine.

Radial bearing: Bearing made with cylindrical or with barrel shaped rollers. The direction of action of the load transmitted to the axis of shaft.

Radial drill: l.A drilling machine in which the drill spindle can be moved along a horizontal arm, which itself can be rotated about a vertical pillar. 2. A heavy drilling machine, so constructed that the position of the drill can be adjusted to the work without moving the latter.

Radial engine: An engine, which has stationary cylinders, arranged radially around a common crankshaft.

R - enamel can : The acid resistant, gold coloured enamel treated can are called R enamel cans. It is used for canning of acidic food which have soluble colouring pigments.
R factor : It is a group of genes present in some bacteria that provide a basis for resistance to antibiotics and can be transferred from cell to cell by conjugation.
R value : R value is a measure of resistance to the flow of heat through a given thickness of a material (insulation) with higher numbers indicating better insulating properties.

R₁, R₂, R₃: The symbols used to designate first, second and third irradiation generation.

Race: i) A genetic subdivision of a species, with more or less distinct characteristics when grown in a particular environment. Sometimes used to denote a portion of a cline. Differences among races may or may not be adaptive; differences among ecotypes are presumed to be adaptive. Hence, ‘race’ is a more general term than ecotype. ii) A genetically and often geographically distinct mating group within a species; also a group of pathogens that infect a given set of plant varieties.

R    :    Gas constant.

R factors  R plasmids      :    Plasmids bearing one or more drug resistant genes.

R group    :    Shorthand for the side chain of an amino acid. 

Rabi : The winter crop season in India from November to April. Main crops grown in rabi comprise wheat, mustard, etc.

Rad : The ‘rad’ is the unit of radiation dose and is defined as the total absorbed dose of 100 ergs of energy per gram of tissue in a unit time.

Radar : An electronic instrument used to detect objects (such as falling precipitation) by their ability to reflect and scatter microwaves back to a receiver. The radar is used for detecting tropical cyclones and monitoring their course as they approach the coast.
 
Radar sonde : A system in which both meteorological and wind data may be obtained, as in radiosonde.

Radiance : Radiant flux per unit area per unit solid angle. Radiance has unit of watts per meter per meter per steradian. The radiance of a perfectly diffuse surface (Lambertian) is independent of the viewing angle.

Sabadilla: A botanical insecticide extracted from seeds of Schoenocaulon officinale

Safener: A chemical additive that reduces the phytotoxic properties of a pesticide.

Salivarium or salivary reservoir: The cavity into which the salivary gland opens, between the hypopharynx and the labium.

Salivary gland: The exocrine gland that produces saliva and typically associated with the labial segment; highly variable in size, structure, and function.

Saltation: Discontinuous variation produced at a single step by mutation (cf. Mutation).

SAE: Society of Automotive Engineers; used to indicate a grade or weight of oil measured according to the SAE.

Safe load: The load that a piece can support without exceeding the working unit stress.

Safety device: An installation designed to protect the operator or other persons. E.g., shields, grass-catching equipment, deflectors, covers for chains, belts, drive shafts, etc.

Safety factor: The degree of surplus strength over and above normal requirements, which serves as insurance against failure.

Safety hitch: A hitch incorporating a device to avoid breakage when an implement works against an abnormal resistance.

Safety valve: 1. An automatic valve, which opens and relieves the pressure when it reaches a predetermined value, thereby protecting the system and operator. 2. A safety device for allowing steam or water to escape from a boiler when the pressure may become dangerous. Usually adjusted to permit not more than 5 pounds of pressure above maximum allowable working pressure of the boiler.

Saccharides : A monosaccharide sugar or combination of sugars is called saccharides.

Saccharification : The process of breaking a complex carbohydrate (starch or cellulose) into its monosaccharide components is called saccharification.

Saccharimeter : A device (polarimeter) used for measuring the amount of sugar in a solution is called saccharimeter. It is also known as saccharometer. It is a hydrometer with a special scale.

S₁, S₂, S₃ : The symbols used to designate the first, second/third generation of selfing. S1 is obtained by sowing seeds of so plants and so on.
Saccharometer: A type of hydrometer used for finding the concentration of sugar solutions by determining their density; usually graduated to read the percentage direct.
Safari Park: Safaris are specialized zoos where the captive animals are housed in any large naturalistic enclosures and the visitors are allowed to enter the enclosure to view the animals in a mechanized vehicle or a predetermined route from close quarters.

Saffir-Simpson Scale : A scale relating a hurricane’s central pressure and winds to the possible damage it is capable of inflicting.
 
Sand Storm : An ensemble of particles of dust or sand energetically lifted to great heights by a strong and turbulent wind.
 
Santa Ana Wind : A warm, dry wind that blows into southern California from the east off the elevated desert plateau. Its warmth is derived from compressional heating.
 
Satellite Imagery : Images formed from data collected by a weather satellite that reveal visual information on the nature of the atmosphere such as the flow of water vapour, the development and movement of weather systems, or the distribution of the temperatures of cloud tops or the earth’s surface.

Saturated Adiabat : Any statistically valid thermodynamic diagram on a graph related to adiabatic change under saturated conditions of an air parcel. 

Tactile: Referring to the sense of touch.

Taenidium (pl. taenidia): The spiral thickening of the tracheal wall that prevents collapse; helical fold in the cuticular lining of tracheae and tracheoles (Fig. 230); cuticular ridges that support the walls of tracheae; a spiral or circular thickening of the inner surface of the tracheae.

T bolt: A bolt shaped like the letter “T, the head being a transverse piece, which fits into the recessed under cut T slots, as on a table of a milling machine or planning machine.

T head engine: A cross section of an engine block resembles the letter T. Valves are arranged on both sides of the engine; requiring two camshafts and two camshafts drive gears. An expensive type of construction.

Tachometer: An instrument for measuring the speeds of shafts in revolutions per minute.

Tail pulley: A pulley at the tail of the belt conveyor opposite the normal discharge end; may be drive pulley or an idler pulley.

Tail screw: The screw, which operates the spindle of the tailstock on a lathe.

Taillight: A signal light, required by law to be carried on the rear of every automobile, and lighted when the car is driven at night.

Tailstock: The movable head of a lathe as distinguished from the headstock, which is fixed.

Take up: A tensioning device in a belt conveyor system for taking up slack of loose parts.

T A Spoilage : The spoilage of low and medium acid canned foods by Clostridium thermosacharolyticum which breaks sugars and form acid and gas (moisture of H₂ and CO₂) resulted in swelling and in severe cases even bursting of can may occur and the spoiled food usually has a sour odour.

Table, normal yield: A standard yield table with which to compare actual yields. The values of a normal yield table are derived as averages of the best producing fully stocked areas for given species, sites, and methods of treatment.

Table, stand: A summary table showing number of trees by species and diameter class for any given area.

Table, stock: A summary table showing for any given area the volume of trees by species and diameter class.

T    :    Thymine

T    :    TH1 cells are a subset of CD4 T cells that are characterized by the cytokines they produce. They are mainly involved in activating macrophages, and are sometimes called inflammatory CD4 T cells. OR TH2 cells are a subset of CD4 T cells that are characterized by the cytokines they produce. They are mainly involved in stimulating B cells to produce antibody, and are often called helper CD4 T cells. OR The term TH3 cell has been used to describe unique cells that produce mainly transforming growth factor-â in response to antigen; they develop predominantly in the mucosal immune response to antigens that are presented orally. OR See regulatory T cells.

Taiga (Boreal Forest) : The open northern part of the coniferous forest. Taiga also refers to sub-polar climate.
 
Tail Wind : The wind that assists the further movement of an object by blowing in the same direction in which the object is actually moving.
 
Tangent Arc : An arc of light tangent to a halo. It forms by refraction of light through ice crystals.
 
Tcu : An abbreviation sometimes used to denote a towering cumulus cloud (cumulus congestus).
 
Teleconnections : A linkage between weather changes occurring in widely separated regions of the world. 

Ultra low volume spraying (ULV): The application of pesticides in extremely concentrated or undiluted form using 10 liters or less per hectare (1 gal per acre); highly concentrated pesticide applied without dilution at a rate of 0.5 gallons per acre or less.

Umbilical cord: The cord containing blood vessels supported by connective tissue that unites the embryo or fetus of a mammal with the mother during development in the uterus. (L. umbilicus = navel).

Ungulate: Having hoofs, as a deer or (L. ungula = hoof).

Unguligrade: Walking or adopted for walking on hoofs. (L. ungula = hoof + gradior = to step).

Ungue: Pretarsal claw.

Unguiculate: Having claws, as a cat. (L. unguis = claw).

U clamp: A clamp shaped like the letter ‘U’ used for clamping down work on planer beds.

Ultimate strength: The highest unit stress that can be sustained, this occurring just at or just before rupture in stress strain diagram.

Ultrasonic drilling: A vibration drilling method in which ultrasonic vibrations are generated by the compression and extension of a core of electrostatic or magneto static material in a rapidly alternating electric or magnetic field.

Ultrasonic machining: The removal of material by abrasive bombardment and crushing in which a flat-ended tool of soft alloy steel is made to vibrate at a frequency of about 20,000 Hz and an amplitude of 0.001-0.003 inch (0.0254-0.0762 millimeter) while a fine abrasive of silicon carbide, aluminum oxide, or boron carbide is carried by a liquid between tool and work.

Uniform: Implies no change with location over a specified region.

U value : U value is a measure of the heat transmission through a building part (wall or window) or through a given thickness of a material (insulation). U values with lower numbers indicate better insulating properties.
 
Ubiquinone : It is one of the groups of lipid soluble quinones that are found especially in mitochondria and have a long isoprenoid side chain, and function in oxidative phosphorylation as electron carrying coenzymes in electron transport.

Ultra freezing: Cryopreservation of seeds immersed in liquid nitrogen (LN₂) at a very low temperature, -196^ºC, can be used for many seeds provided the moisture content is relatively low, about 8 to 15 percent and the seeds are in sealed containers.

Unclassed forest: Forest land owned by Government but not constituted in to a reserved, village or protected forest.
 
Under bark: Measurement of the diameter or circumference of a trunk or branch made with the bark removed. See also Over bark.

Ultraviolet Radiation : Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is one form of radiant energy coming from the sun. The sun emits a range of energy known as the electromagnetic spectrum. The various forms of energy, or radiation, are classified according to wavelength (measured in nanometers (nm) where one nm is a millionth of a millimeter). The shorter the wavelength, the more energetic is the radiation. In order of decreasing energy, the principal forms of radiation are gamma rays, X-rays, UV (ultraviolet radiation), visible light, infrared radiation, microwaves, and radio waves. Ultraviolet, which is invisible, is so named because it occurs next to violet in the visible light spectrum. Ultraviolet radiation contains the wavelengths between 30 and 400 nm. The UV band is divided into three sub-bands in regard to its biological impacts :

Vagina: A pouch-like or tubular genital chamber of the female genitalia; external opening of the female reproductive system; or the terminus of the female reproductive tract that opens to the outside; or the terminal portion of the female reproductive tract which receives the copulatory organ of a male in mating (L. sheath).

Valid name: The name of a taxonomic category which is available nomenclaturally and also is recognized as valid on Zoological grounds (cf. Available name).

Valvar lamina: The posterior margin (usually prolonged posteriorly) of the eighth abdominal sternite (female Odonata).

Valve: In animals, any structure that limits or closes an opening; the thin folds in veins, lymph vessels, or hearts or the circular muscles about a tubular exit; also, either external shell of bivalve mollusk, brachiopod, or some crustaceans.

Valvifer (s): A basal sclerite of a valve of the ovipositor, articulating with the tergum; or proximal structures of the ovipositor that bear the valvulae; in female insect genitalia, derivations of gonocoxites 8 and 9, supporting the valves of the ovipositor.

Valvulae: Distal structures of the ovipositor borne on the valvifers; the three pairs of processes forming the sheath and piercing structures of the ovipositor.

V belt: An endless power transmission belt with a trapezoidal cross section, which runs in a pulley with a V-shaped groove. The top surface of the belt approximately flush with to top of pulley. V belt transmits higher torque at less width and tension than a flat belt.

V blocks: Metal blocks cut ‘V’ shaped on one side to permit holding cylindrical work while machining or testing.

V type engine: An engine with cylinder blocks arranged in a ‘V’ shape. One crankshaft serves both banks of cylinders.

Vacuum: Negative gauge pressure, or a pressure less than atmospheric pressure. Vacuum can be measured in psi, but is usually measured in inches or millimeters of mercury (Hg); a reading of 30 in. Hg (762 mm Hg) would indicate a perfect vacuum.

Vacreation : The pasteurization of the milk or cream under reduced pressure by direct steam is called vacreation.

Vacuum : The state of negative pressure. It is equal to atmospheric pressure minus absolute pressure.

Vacuum cooling : A technique of cooling vegetable (leafy vegetables, asparagus Brussels sprouts) having a high surface to volume ratio rapidly and uniformly by boiling off some of their water at 10C and at low pressure (5 mm of Hg) into a sealed container. The produce is cooled by evaporation of water from the tissue surface and is more rapid than hydro cooling.

Validation: i) The process of assessing the accuracy for a given purpose of a simulation model by comparing the model’s predictions with independent results. ii) Ground validation is the confirmation of information from satellite imagery or aerial photography. See also Ground truth.

Variability: Absence of uniformity. Quality of differing from the average value. This term is usually used in a general sense and qualified by such words as ‘low’, ‘moderate’, and ‘high’. For quantitative comparisons, the concept of a variance is used.
