Introduction

Biofortification is the development of nutrient dense staple food crops using the best conventional breeding practices and modern biotechnology, without sacrificing agronomic performance and important consumer preferred trait (Nestel et al., 2006). It provides a comparatively cost-effective, sustainable, and long- term means of delivering more micronutrients (Saltzman et al. 2014). This approach not only will lower the number of severely malnourished people who require treatment by complementary interventions but also will help them maintain improved nutritional status. Moreover, biofortification provides a feasible means of reaching malnourished rural populations who may have limited access to commercially marketed fortified foods and supplements. Micronutrient malnutrition (MNM) is the major constrain to provide nutritional security to world population of underdeveloped and developing countries. Among the 20 major risk factors of the global burden of disease estimates, Fe deficiency ranks 9th and Zn deficiency ranks 11th, while in the high mortality countries, including India, they rank 6th and 5th, respectively (WHO 2002).

Due to inadequate intakes of vitamins and minerals, half of the world's population suffers from micronutrient malnutrition. An adequate amount of wholesome as well as diverse foods are required for the proper growth and development. In addition to calories requirements, these foods should provide various nutrients. In India, ~70% of children do not get the required calories either due to lack of enough food or diverse food. This indicates that these children are also incapable of fulfilling their protein, minerals and vitamins requirements. Diets that lack diversity can be deficient in certain nutrients. Due to the micronutrient composition of the soil of a region, or because of the intrinsic insufficiency of the normal diet the staple foods of some region can lack particular nutrients. The individual plant foods are often deficient in certain nutrient components due to the varying level and composition of food nutrients in different food crops. Some crops are rich in one component but low in other. For example; legumes are usually high in protein, but deficient in essential amino acids like methionine whereas, wheat and rice are rich in carbohydrates but contain little essential amino acid such as lysine, iron, and lack provitamin A. Relying on a single food crop as major staple source of nutrients thus will not attain a nutritionally complete diet and result in malnutrition and deficiency diseases, which often occur in populations of developing countries, mainly due to poverty. Globally, over one billion people are undernourished and food security is a major issue with the world's population forecast reaching to nine billion by 2050.

1. Introduction According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization, 780 million of the estimated 792.5 million malnourished people globally are in countries that are developing. Despite expanded agricultural production, “hidden hunger,” which is often caused by a shortage of vital micronutrients in daily meals, affects around 2 billion people worldwide. Majority of the population is relying on plant-based diets which are critical for sustaining nutritional security and are the primary source of nutrients required for optimal growth and development. Most of these diets are found deficit in major nutrients such as proteins, iron, calcium and Vitamin B12.However, a considerable number of Asian and African populations suffer from nutritional inadequacies as a result of consuming plant-based diets (Tripathi et al., 2019). Earlier, the main concern of farming systems was crop productivity and yield. However, there has been a shift in emphasis toward human health and well-being.

At this moment, the majority of energy is obtained from fossil fuels and requires switching over to alternative energy sources is the need of the hour. Fossil fuels are nonrenewable energy source and also have seriously negative impacts on the environment. The use of fossil fuels cause excessive global climate change because emissions of greenhouse pollutants and the formation of compounds CO_x, NO_x, SO_x, C_xH_y, ash and other organic compounds that are released into the atmosphere. The increase in greenhouse gas emission will result in global warming, climate change, environmental degradation and health problems.

Biofuel, any fuel that is derived from biomass - that is, plant or algae material or animal waste. Since such feedstock material can be replenished readily, biofuel is considered to be a source of renewable energy, unlike fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas.

Biogas typically comprises 60-65% methane (CH4), 35-40% carbon dioxide (CO2), and 0.5-1.0% hydrogen sulfide (H2S), along with traces of water vapor. It is approximately 20% lighter than air and has an ignition temperature of 650-750°C. The calorific value of raw biogas is around 20 MJ/m³ (4,713 kcal/m³).
Unlike Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), biogas cannot be converted into a liquid state under normal temperature and pressure. The critical temperature for methane liquefaction is -82.1°C at a pressure of 4.71 MPa, making liquefaction complex and energy-intensive. However, biogas can be upgraded by removing impurities like CO2 and H2S and compressing it into cylinders for use in three-wheelers, cars, pickup vans, or stationary engines at remote locations.
Since Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) technology is already wellestablished, upgraded biogas (also called biomethane) which has similar composition and energy content can serve as a direct substitute for CNG in all its applications. The calorific value of upgraded biogas (with CO2 removed) increases to around 34 MJ/m³, compared to 20 MJ/m³ for raw biogas.
Techniques for Biogas Purification
To enrich biogas and increase its methane content, various purification methods are employed:
1. Water Scrubbing
This physical absorption process involves pressurizing biogas and feeding it into the bottom of a packed column, while water is introduced at the top. The CO2 and H2S dissolve into the water as it flows downward, while methane rises and is collected. The water used can

11.1 General

Biogas is generated through a process of anaerobic digestion of organic materials. The materials normally used are human and animal waste, crop residues, agro-industrial waste and other biomass in a combination with water. Biogas production technology contributes in following ways:

(a)It provides a better and cheaper fuel for cooking, lighting and for power generation.

(b)It produces good quality, enriched manure to improve soil fertility.

(c)It provides and effective and convenient ways for sanitary disposal of human excreta, improving the hygienic conditions.

(d)It generates social benefits such as reducing burden on forest for meeting cooking fuel by cutting of tree for fuelwood, reduction in the drudgery of women and children etc.

(e)As a smokeless domestic fuel, it reduces the incidence of eye and lung disease.

(f)It also helps in generation of productive employment.

The biogas technology is primarily based on fermentation of cellulosic rich organic matter under anaerobic conditions. The methane producing bacteria become more active after the creation of anaerobic conditions, thus, the gas produced become rich in methane & carbon dioxide, beside traces of hydrogen sulphide, ammonia, oxygen, water vapour etc. depending on the feed material and other conditions. For burning of gas, it is necessary that methane contents should be more than 50 per cent. The complete knowledge of process of methane production including its chemistry, physiology, bio-chemistry, micro-biology and bacteriology has been studied over years in many parts of the world. The culture and isolation of microbes under various environmental conditions have been successfully experimented to improve rate of reaction. The conditions, under which cattle dung, organic wastes, bushes, weeds etc. will produce methane, can be understood through chemistry of fermentation.

8.1 Introduction

Biogas is produced by the anaerobic digestion of biodegradable materials with the help of microorganisms. Biogas is also considered as renewable energy source because of is environment friendly nature. Conversion of cattle dung, kitchen wastes and agricultural wastes into biogas have the potential to minimize the burden on the fossil fuel and reduce the environmental pollution. Majority of developing countries specially their rural and suburban areas faces lack of access to the electricity and cooking gas. Biogas technology is emerging as a sustainable technology for waste treatment which could help to tackle the waste disposal issue in developing countries. 

According to Watson, bio-herbicides are living entities (natural enemies) used deliberately to suppress the growth or reduce the population of a weed species. This may include an insect; a microbe or a parasite nematode. These organisms operate directly or indirectly (by producing toxins) and their mode of action proves deleterious to the weed species. The latter toxins are termed bio rationals, phytotoxins or natural herbicides and are excluded in the definition.Bio-herbicides are formulations containing plant pathogens capable of mass production in vitro that are applied directly to target weeds uniformly to kill or suppress their growth. This method employs the annual release of a bio-agent into specific weed infested fields to infest and kill susceptible weeds. At present only the potential use of fungal pathogens as mycoherbicide has been studied in depth. Exploitation of bacteria seems promising where use of viruses as biocontrol agents are problematic since they are not host specific and require vector for their transmission.

Abstract

Hydrogen synthesis from bioprocesses a good approach for generation clean of fuel for world's development. Throughout the ancient and current periods, most of the developmental activities are completed by consumption of non-renewable fossil fuel energy that which has resulted in multiple environmental issues or challenges (Climate change and pollution by toxic gases or byproducts formation) at global level. Biohydrogen synthesis from anaerobic bacterial fermentation could be a good effort for sustainable energy production without any toxic byproduct formation. For production of hydrogen, lignocellulosic material can be utilized as cheap raw substrates. This would help the farmers in providing surplus benefits to farmer for their agriculture residues that normally burnt and cause the serious air pollution. Utilization of agro-waste residues can help in development of sustainable biofuels for world energy need. Burning of agrowaste residues by farmer's can be discouraged via utilization as raw carbon substrates thereby reducing air pollution.

Historical Aspect

The primitive man during his long history as a hunter and food gatherer, used ruminants as food till about 6000 B.C. Later, he developed the arts of aerable -agriculture and animal husbandry. The ruminants played a major role as sources ofbothfoodandmechanicalwork. In turn, the new techniquesof foodproduction greatlyincreased the amount of food available and enabledthe establishment of settled communities.Theradicalnatureof thesedevelopments was clearlyshown by the fact that within a couple of millennia, manhad evolved from primitive to urbanized, civilized communities. Throughout the historical epochs, animal food - meat, milk and milk products continued to form an important fraction of the diet in most of the civilized societies. The favoured nature of these foods was well shown in the observation that, with increasing affluence, human -beings tended to increase the fraction of the diet provided by animal foods, especiallyfromruminants.

Since middle of twentieth century, evidences had been accumulating to indicate that the high intake of saturated fats from meat and ‘dairy products might play a role in the etiology of atherosclerosis. This concern had provided a stimulus to produce husbandrytechniquesleadingto the modification of the composition of ruminant fats as well as possibility of protecting dietary poly - unsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) from ruminal biohydrogenation in 1951. Scientists all the world round, started studying ruiminant fats and ruminal lipid metabolism in this perspective. Different research groups developed various techniques of protectingdietary- PUFA, so as to make themavailable in the meat, milk and its products, but lacked the availability of sensitive techniques for confirmation. With the discovery of Gas Chromatoaraphy (GC) in 1954, a new beginning of resolution and detection of PUFA started with gradual precision. Later on, the GC was further equipped with mass - spectroscopy and subsequently with infra -red detector. The scientists were very much successful in protecting the dietary essential fatty acids (E.F.A.s) or even by - passing them from biohydrogenation in vitro.

The Distributed Information Sub Center at Kerala Agricultural University, Thrissur was set up in May 1995 as the 23^rd center of the BTISNet of DBT, Government of India. The area of specilisation of the Centre is Agricultural Biotech- nology. The Centre passed through several phases involving Internet connectivity through the ordinary C band connectivity, then the Ku band connectivity etc. Now the commu- nication facilities of the Centre have been strengthened by procuring an ISDN Internet connection and a connection through ASIANET. The Center caters to the needs of the students (UG, M Sc & Ph D) and faculty of all departments of the Colleges in the main campus as well as of the other nearby academic and research centers of the University. Over the years, DISC has come to occupy a position in the KAU in the area of Infor- mation Technology , information sources and services based on Internet, CD-ROMs etc. The Centre has procured databases in the field of Biotechnology and developed several databases in the field of Agriculture and related fields. The center regularly conducts training programmes in Bioinformatics. The research activities in the field of Bioinformatics have been enhanced. The Centre has now been upgraded to DIC to facilitate intensive research on Bioinformatics in an effective manner. During the year 2004, the Centre has also started offering a course on Bioinformatics for the M.Sc Biotechnology students of the College of Horticulture.

Biotechnology research in KAU spread over various research stations and cam- puses includes Plant Biotechnology, Animal Biotechnology and Fisheries Biotechnol- ogy. Thrust areas for Plant Biotechnology include developing in vitro protocols for mass multiplication of elite types of fruit plants, ornamentals, medicinal plants, spices, plantation crops and forest species. The other thrust areas include checking clonal stability and genetic fidelity of in vitro derived plants using molecular markers, DNA finger printing and characterisation of germplasm with molecular markers, imparting biotic and abiotic stress tolerance in otherwise accepted crop varieties, genetic trans- formation for imparting/ improving expression of desired traits, in vitro germplasm conservation, enhancement of secondary metabolites production etc.

The crops identified for biotechnology research at KAU include spice crops like black pepper, ginger, turmeric, vanilla, cardamom; plantation crops like cashew, coco- nut and medicinal & aromatic plants such as Kaempferia, Trichopus, Gymnema, Holostemma and Coscinium. For improvement of such crops through molecular breed- ing, it is highly essential to identify/design specific probes/primers, micro-satellites, etc. By combining the research results generated at the Biotechnology Centre and informa- tion retrieved from the Bioinformatics Centre, suitable probes, primers are being de- signed for characterization and improvement of these unique crops through molecular breeding.

Bioinformatics is a branch of biological science which deals with the study of methods for storing, retrieving and analyzing biological data, such as nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) and protein sequence, structure, function, pathways and genetic interactions. It generates new knowledge that is useful in such fields as drug design and development of new software tools to create that knowledge. Bioinformatics also deals with algorithms, databases and information systems, web technologies, artificial intelligence and soft computing, information and computation theory, structural biology, software engineering, data mining, image processing, modeling and simulation, discrete mathematics, control and system theory, circuit theory, and statistics.

Abstract

The completion of large number of genome sequencing projects has generated large volumes of raw sequence data. One of the fundamental tasks in bioinformatics is the creation of databases for data storage and development of tools for analysis. The first plant genome to be completed is that of Arabidopsis thaliana in 2000^[49]. This was followed by the rice genome and others. The availability of complete genomes has provided us with an opportunity to analyze them and understand plant biology in a holistic way. It has enhanced our understanding of factors affecting plant growth and development, abiotic and biotic stress, disease resistance, host pathogen interactions amongst others.

Abstract

Bioinformatics is a discipline combining biology, mathematics and the technology including computational tools and databases. It is one of the fast growing fields in the scientific community. This chapter is intended to provide an overview of the important databases of bioinformatics used for research in molecular biology, taxonomy, conservation biology, forensics and medicine and for the commercial applications in pharmaceutical industry and agricultural biotechnology. This chapter also describes various internet resources available in the field of Bioinformatics.

Introduction

Bioinformatics has emerged as one of the important scientific disciplines which revolutionized application of life sciences in our day to day life. A simple definition of bioinformatics is: “Bioinformatics is the use of computational techniques for the consolidation and analysis of large scale experimental biological data”. Hence, Bioinformatics has transformed the life science discipline from a purely wet lab-based science to a computationally assisted information science.

Application of bioinformatics in life science has multi facets right from gene discovery to drug design where the knowledge on sequence, structure and function of genes and proteins take the lead. The objectives of biological database generation are to: (i) organize the large scale experimental biological data for further investigation, (ii) make the biological data available globally and (iii) avoid duplication of experiments.

Bioinformatics is a new science conceptualizing biology in terms of molecules and then applying informatics techniques derived from disciplines such as computer science, maths and statistics to understand and organize the information associated with these molecules on a large scale (Gerstein and Jansen, 2000). It is often defined as the application of computational techniques to understand and organize the information associated with biological macromolecules (Luscombe et al., 2001). It represents a new field at the interface of the twentieth-century revolutions in molecular biology and computers (Pevsner, 2000)

Abstract

Indian agriculture made a rapid stride, converting the country from food scarcity to sufficiency. But challenges for the Indian agriculture in 21st century are much greater than before. The growing population has to be fed and surplus has to be produced with declining land, water and threat of climate change. Food and livelihood security of increasing population is a cause of concern and has received focused attention across the globe. Food security emphasizes access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food for an active and healthy life. Similarly, livelihood security has the emphasis on income and other resources to enable households to meet their fair needs.

The horticulture which includes fruits, vegetables, spices, flowers and medicinal and aromatic plants, has proved beyond doubt its potentiality for gainful diversification. Initiatives taken by Government and other stakeholders have impacted the development in terms of increased production, productivity and availability of horticultural crops. One of the significant developments is that horticulture has moved from rural confine to commercial production and this changing scenario has encouraged private sector investment in production system management. Now the horticulture sector contributes 29.65 per cent to agricultural GDP that has achieved a growth rate of 5-6 per cent during the decade. India has emerged as the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables and has first position in several horticultural crops. Production and export of flowers have increased manifold and the country has a major stake in global trade of spices and cashew nuts. Exports of medicinal plants, fruits and vegetables have also exhibited rising trend.

Bioinformatics is the study of analysis of biological data using computer programming, mathematics and statistics. Bioinformatics is the application of computer science and information technology to the field of biological sciences. Bioinformatics involves databases and information systems, web technologies, artificial intelligence and soft computing, information and computation theory, software engineering and statistics. The one of the most important achievement of bioinformatics is the human genome project which was mapped in 2001. Most of the work in this field is based on the research. Scientists make databases and develop different tools to analyze different gene expressions. Within last few decades, a number of research  in the field of molecular biology, along with advances in genomic technologies, have generated a huge number of biological information  Similar is the case in the field of animal production where many advances have occurred. The day to day advances in bioinformatics and computational science have led development in the field of animal as well as veterinary science. Bioinformatics generates new knowledge in the field of Animal Sciences, and improving & discovering new models of computation for the advanced livestock production.

Abstract

Bioinformatics is a field of science which studies biology, computer science, and information technology. The ultimate goal is to obtain useful information by data acquisition, analysis and interpretation of sequences data. In the current decade, a huge volume of sequence data is stored in the data bank due to global genome initiatives of many organisms. Management and understanding of the genome data cannot be possible without the bioinformatics tools. A large number of tools and softwares packages are available either commercial or freely online for the bioinformatics applications. The use of bioinformatics tools enhances the research capability for crop improvement through genome sequencing, database management, assembly, alignment, primer designing, markers development, genes prediction and annotation, gene expression, phylogenetics, protein structure identification, metabolic pathways analysis and many other applications.

Abstract

Bioinformatics, an integrated science of biology and informatics is a repository of new emerging dimensions like proteome, genome, drug discovery etc, whose concepts have varied applications in various sciences/areas including agricultural/horticultural sciences. Bioinformatics tools are employed to investigate interactions between different biological systems i.e. gene-gene, protein-protein, gene-protein interactions and this information has tremenduous application in agricultural/horticultural sciences. It is the computer aided  data handling approach to understand the life process precisely. Biological problem require innovative database prospective for gene sequencing (management and alignment), recognition of genes and regulatory elements, protein structure prediction, evolution and phylogenetic studies, etc.

ABSTRACT

Bioinformatics is a critical tool in designing the molecular biology experiments. The xeroxing of specific part of genome needs correct primer designing. Primer designing has central role in molecular biology right from cloning, sequencing, gene expression profiling by real time PCR, genotyping by RFLP, SNP analysis by real time PCR and auto sequencer. In this chapter we are describing how to proceed for experimental designing right from data mining from GENEBANK to designing of primers for various common molecular genetic analysis work. The write up also describes in silico evaluation of primers, various off line commercial and non-commercial software, on line free software and trouble shootings in primer designing, The different strategy described in context of primer designing would be of immense use of researchers.

Introduction
Bioinformatics software plays an important role in the identification of plant varieties through employing genetic and genomic data to distinguish various kinds from each other. The software uses such approaches to DNA sequencing, molecular markers, and computational algorithms to increase precision in crop identification. Techniques such as SNP genotyping, DNA barcoding, and machine learning models are helpful in easily classifying and validating crop varieties. Farmers and breeders, for instance, will benefit from bioinformatics because it ensures genetic purity, improves genetic selection in crops, and provides more yields. It also incorporates bioinformatics tools that are revolutionizing plant breeding and conservation and allow the accurate identification of diverse highquality crop varieties for sustainable agriculture and food security (Derreper et al., 2011; Heo et al., 2024).
Crop variety identification has prime importance as per agriculture, food security, and conservation of biodiversity it maintains genetic purity for crops resulting in more yields with disease resistance and adaptability to climate. Correct identification will help farmer’s select superior seeds and maximize resources for increased productivity; further crop variety identification would participate in breeding programs ensuring superior crops varieties with desirable characteristics like drought tolerance, pest resistance, and better nutritional content. Accurate crop variety identification, in terms of food security, creates a steady supply of food through supporting continuous cultures of high-yielding and hardy varieties for the farm. Welfare in crop variety identification would help prevent fraud and misrepresentation in the food because they would be able to ensure that what customers receive is the type of crop they were looking for both in planned nutrition and costs. Facilitate seed certification schemes for protection of farmers from counterfeit seeds that would result in low yields.
Maintenance of genetic resources through proper identification of crop varieties ensures conservation of biodiversity. Crop variety identification and registration is a huge stroke towards conservation of wild and traditional crop species, which are very important for breeding and climate resilience. Such an event becomes important in climate change where genetic diversity ensures the abilities of crops to adapt to changing environmental conditions (Kim et al., 2021; Nguyen et al., 2025; Pavan et al., 2020).

The microbial community is a gold mine for gene(s) and pathway(s) that encode novel biocatalysts for biosynthetic or biodegradation processes, including degradation of pollutants, synthesis of biofuels and production of novel drugs. Sequencing of the microbial genome will also provide insights into the ecology of  microorganisms that are beneficial to, or threaten, crop production, and that ensure the quality and provision of ecosystem services. These unique genetic and biosynthetic capabilities of microorganisms have made them likely  candidates for solving particular difficult problems in the agriculture. For many years microbiologist and microbial  ecologists have tended to differentiate microorganisms as beneficial and harmful according to their function and how they affect soil quality, plant growth, and yield and plant health.

Fruits with their delightful colours, flavours and tastes are nature’s wonderful gift to mankind. Apart from being the most nutritious food in the form of easily digestible simple sugars, vitamins, minerals and many phyto-nutrients (Plant derived micronutrients), they provide unique health benefits due to their antioxidant properties and valuable fibre. Antioxidants help protect the human body from oxidant stress, diseases, and cancers, and also boost the immunity of the body thus developing the capacity to fight against various types of diseases. The insoluble dietary fiber in fruits is known to provide protection from conditions like chronic constipation, hemorrhoids, colon cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, and rectal fissures etc. Due to their unique nutrition-profile the importance of fruits in our diet cannot be over emphasised.

Insects are a major limiting factor in fruit production. The infestation of insects pests on fruit trees in orchards adversely affects the quality and yield of fruits. The size, shape, taste, attractiveness and palatability of fruit deteroriates, due to which the market price is reduced and the growers incur losses. Fruit growers resort to use of chemical pesticides under such conditions. However many reports suggest that although the global production and use of pesticides in agriculture is increasing every year, but the damage due to insects has not decreased rather it has also increased, indicating that the use of pesticides is not the panacea remedy for all insect related problems. Many scientists are of the opinion that over-reliance on the use of synthetic pesticides in crop protection programs around the world has resulted in disturbances to the environment, pest resurgence, pest resistance to pesticides, and lethal and sub-lethal effects on non target organisms especially beneficial flora and fauna, including humans. Farmers spend thousands of rupees on pesticides. The residues of pesticides in food and fruits is yet another cause of concern. Fruits which are considered to be wonderful for health are often laden with unacceptable levels of pesticide residues nulling their beneficial properties. Pesticides have been linked to many diseases especially cancer. All these issues related with use of pesticides has triggered rethinking on the methods of control.The recent examples of the results of indiscriminate pesticides use , consequent crop failures and suicide by farmers now calls for introspection in this matter.

Introduction

Agricultural pests cause considerable yield losses throughout the world. In ancient times, farmers had to manage pest problem to safeguard their basic needs, and as a response, the farmers use to practice and develop cultural and mechanical pest control strategies based on their field experience. Over a period of time, these practices have become a part of their production management system. Pest management practices began to change in later stages of the 18^th century. Introduction of pesticides in agricultural ecosystems 1950’s contributed substantially in raising agricultural productivity and they become an integral component of intensive agricultural ecosystems. At the same time, environmentalists raised their concerns on deleterious effects of pesticides on environment, human health and non-target organisms. Excessive use and abuse of pesticides leads to the problems like resistance, resurgence and residues (Beaument, 1993). One of the deleterious effects of over use of pesticides is the death of effective predator and parasitoids. This ultimately leads to the imbalance in the agroecosystem. Concerns about the negative effects of pesticides led to research and promotion of alternative pest control practices – Integrated Pest Control or simply IPC. This new concept called Integrated Pest Control (IPC) and later Integrated Pest Management (IPM) was stimulated by symposia organized by the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations in 1966 and the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) in 1967. IPM made a paradigm shift in the philosophy of pest control, from pest eradication to pest management. Instead of single tactic control, emphasis was placed on the use of a combination of available tactics in a compatible manner keep the pest below economic injury levels. Consequently, a more integrated approach of pest control was advocated considering the natural mortality factors. IPM is a complex system approach that comprises judicious use of cultural, physical, mechanical, biological, host plant resistance, regulatory and chemical methods.

Banana (Musa sp; family: Musaceae) is the second most important fruit crop in India next to mango. Its year round availability, affordability, varietal range, taste, nutritive and medicinal value makes it the favorite fruit among all classes of people. It has also good export potential. Banana evolved in the humid tropical regions of South East Asia with India as one of its center of origin. Modern edible varieties have evolved from the two species – Musa acuminata and Musa balbisiana and their natural hybrids, originally found in the rain forests of S.E. Asia. During the seventh century AD its cultivation spread to Egypt and Africa. Banana and plantains are grown in about 120 countries. Total annual world production is estimated at 86 million tonnes of fruits. India leads the world in banana production with an annual output of about 14.2 million tonnes. Other leading producers are Brazil, Eucador, China, Phillipines, Indonesia, Costarica, Mexico, Thailand and Colombia. In India banana ranks first in production and third in area among fruit crops. It accounts for 13% of the total area and 33% of the production of fruits. Production is highest in Maharashtra (3924.1 thousand tones) followed by Tamil Nadu (3543.8 thousand tonnes). Within India, Maharashtra has the highest productivity of 65.70 metric tones /ha. against national average of 30.5 tonnes/ha. The other major banana producing states are Karnataka, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Assam.

Brinjal is an important vegetable crop grown extensively throughout India. In India, brinjal is cultivated in around 730.4 ha with a production of 17.5 million tonnes in the year 2017-18. It is also called as poor man’s vegetable. It is consumed in variety of ways depending upon the eating habits of the different parts of the country. It is grown extensively in Bihar, Orissa, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh and states with matching climatic conditions in the tropics and subtropics.

Brinjal is an important vegetable crop, but insect pests are making more losses in brinjal cultivation. In brinjal, more than 36 pests have been reported from the time of planting to harvest (Regupathy et al., 1997). Among all insect pests shoot and fruit borer (Leucinodes orbanalis), hadda beetle (Epilachna vigintioctopunctata), jassid (Cestius phycitis), Ash weevil (Myllocerus subfasciatus), white fly (Bemisia tabaci), lace wing bug (Urentius hystricellus) are important (Barker and Pritchrad, 1960).

Despite serious nature of the pest, its management tactics by and large is limited to frequent sprays of chemical insecticide without much impact on the yield. Such practice of pesticide usage is detrimental to environment, also increases the cost of production and chances of insecticide residues in the fruit. About 47 per cent insecticides are used for management of fruit and shoot borer out of the total pesticide consumed in vegetables. In this background major emphasis, now-a-days, is being given on Biointensive integrated pest management as alternate to the insecticides for management of any pest. More than a dozen parasitoids and three pathogens have been recorded as natural enemies of insect pest. But the extent of parasitisation/predation under field condition is very low. In this context, inundative release of bio-agents, particularly egg parasitoids in pest management may be more advantageous.

Chilli (Capsicum annuum var.annuum L.) is one of the most important economical and popular vegetable crops grown for its green fruits as vegetable and red one as a spice¹. It is a native of southern Texas and Maxico and was introduced in India by the Portuguese in 19^th century². Chilli is mainly used in culinary adding flavor, color, pungency and rich source of vitamins like A, C, E, P and having medicinal properties³. Chilli is one of the important cash crops grown in almost all parts of the country and is widely grown in the tropics and subtropics as also under glass houses in temperate regions⁴. The plants are very sensitive to excessive rainfall, water lodging and frost^2,5. The ideal condition for its cultivation are well drained loam soil rich in organic matter but can also be grown in many type of soils⁶. India is a major producer, exporter and consumer of chilli⁷. Chilli is presently grown extensively throughout the country, both under rainfed and irrigated conditions, in almost all the states covering an area of 792.1 thousand Ha with annual production of 1223.4 thousand metric tonnes⁸. Andhra Pradesh is the largest producer of chilli in India. It contributes about 30% to the total area under chilli, followed by Karnataka (20%), Maharashtra (15%), Orissa (9%), Tamil Nadu (8%) and other states contributing 18% to the total area under chilli⁸.

A symposium organized by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) in 1966 and International Organization of Biological Control (IOBC) in 1967, felt the need for the development of a new concept called “Integrated control” which was later replaced by “Integrated Pest Management”. The origin of IPM was necessary after the serious failure of the chemical age which started in the 1940’s. The pesticides were used as the only tactic to completely annihilate the pests from the crop ecosystem, which did miraculously decreased the pests and increased the production of the crop extensively, but they failed to realize the balance of life, by nature and by virtue of the selection pressure pests started developing resistance against all kind of pesticides being dumped on them.While the pests were getting resistant, the dumped pesticides were accumulating in the environment and biomagnifying inside the bodies of animal (WHO, 1990; Alewu & Nosiri, 2011; Eskenazi et al., 1999). The indiscriminate use of pesticides led to the significant health hazard to the humans (WHO, 1990; Alewu & Nosiri, 2011; Sanborn et al., 2007; Mnifet al; 2011; Semchuk et al., 1992; Goad et al., 2004; McKinlay et al., 2008; Gasnier et al., 2009; Lin et al., 2015; Waddell et al., 2001), reproductive malfunction in male (Jamal et al., 2015), nervous system (Jaga and Dharmani, 2003; Rosenstock et al., 1991; Wesseling et al., 2002; Eskenazi et al., 2006), cardiovascular system (Hung et al., 2015) and ultimately death (WHO, 1990; Gunnell et al., 2007). From the lessons acquired of the hazards, the concept of IPM proposed the concept of “pest eradication” was replaced with “pest management”. There are more than 64 definitions of IPM but the most accepted one came from FAO (1967) which defined IPM as “a system in context with associated environment and the population dynamics of pest species, utilizes all suitable techniques and methods in as compatible manner as possible and maintains the pest populations at level below those causing economic injury”. IPM decreased the pest pressure of the crop and increased the productivity of the crop and income of the farmers. IPM is a complex approach that advocates the integration of several components such as physical, mechanical, biological, legal, ecological and chemical tactics, in a compatible manner in a complete ecological set up, so that natural mortality has a role in checking the pest population building up above economic injury level (EIL).

Biointensive integrated pest management (BIPM) is essentially a component of integrated pest management which helps to reduce the dependence on chemical pesticides thereby preventing ecological deterioration. The major elements of this approach includes many factors viz. host plant resistance, use of beneficial organism, agronomic practices, bio pesticides, parasitoids, predators, plant exudates etc. It also includes all other conventional non-chemical methods of pest control like use of botanical insecticides preferably plant based insecticides like Azadirachtin from Neem (Azadirachta indica), Rotenone from Derris chinensis and Derris elliptica, Nicotine from Tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum), Juvocimene 1 or 2 and Ocimin from Ocimum sanctum, Atropine from Datura stramonium, Annonine and Squamocin from Annona squamosa etc.

Cucurbits belong to the family cucurbitaceae; constitute the largest group of summer vegetables grown all over the world which includes about 118 genera and 825 species. Cucumbers, muskmelons, watermelons, squashes, gourds, luffagourd, tissel-gourd and pumpkins are commonly grown cucurbits are mostly important one. These crops are attacked by a variety of insect pest and diseases throughout its growth period; generate wounds that help to transmit of viral particles, bacteria and invasion of fungal pathogens. Major insect pests include cucumber beetles, red pumpkin beetles, fruit flies, epilachna beetles, squash bugs, aphids, white flies, squash vine borers, two-spotted spider mites, and nematodes affects significant damages from seeding stage upto harvest. Insect pest infestations in cucurbits bring about heavy losses through reduction in yield, lowered quality of produce, defoliation of leaves, damage roots or flowers, contribute to poor crop standard increased cost of production and harvesting besides expenditure incurred on materials and equipments to apply control measures.

The guava fruit is a good source of vitamin C, pectin, calcium and phosphorus. The fruit is used for the preparation of processed products like jams, jellies and beverages. Guava jelly puree is very popular for its attractive purplish-red colour, pleasant taste and aroma. The puree can be used in juice, cakes, puddings, sauces, ice-cream, jam and jelly. Fruits can be preserved by canning as halves or quarters, with or without seed core (shells). Good quality salad can be prepared from the shell of ripe fruits. Their cultivation in India about 1.32 lakh ha area with production is 17.12 lakh tonnes. Biointensive pest management is use to major emphasis on conservation and enhancement of natural enemies and utilization of all compatible methods for achieving effective economical and safe pest control. These methods are the most appropriate in horticulture and in protected cultivation. The major aim of Biointensive pest management is to provide guidelines and options for the effecting management of pests and beneficial organisms in an ecological context. It will help to reduce the dependence on chemical pesticides and ecological deterioration. Biointensive pest management includes bio-pesticides derived from microbes, parasitoides, predators, botanicals and all conventional non-chemical methods or use of need based. Large number of insect pests has been reported to occur on guava at various growth stages. More than 80 species of insects and mites have recorded on affecting the growth and production. About three species of fruit flies, Bactrocera dorsalis, B. Cucurbitae and B. Zonata found to attack guava fruits, B. Dorsalis being the dominant. Maximum activity of fruit flies is observed during August to December reaching its peak during September. Two species of bark eating caterpillars, Indarbela quadrinota and I. Tetraonis are commonly found in the region. Sucking pests included Mealy scale, Chloropulvinaria psidii, Mealy bugs Ferrisia virgata, Plannococcus citri, Tea mosquito bugs, Helopeltis antonii, aphid, jassids etc (Azad Thakur et al., 2009). Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn), like most fruit tree crops, is usually attacked by two or three key pests, several secondary pests and a large number of occasional pests in localized areas where it is grown. Litchi is an important subtropical evergreen fruit crop belongs to family Sapindaceae. It is known as queen of the fruit due to its attractive deep pink/red colours and flavoured juicy aril (Singh et al., 2012).

Insect pest attacks on litchi, in China there are 193 species of litchi pests in two classes, 11 orders, and 57 families. In India, nearly 42 insects and mite species reported to attacking on trees and fruits of litchi at different stages of growth (Singh et al., 2012). The majority belong to the Lepidoptera and Coleoptera, followed by the Homoptera and Hemiptera. However, only about three or four key pests including fruit and flower borers, sucking bugs, stem borers and erinose mites which require regular control, and the species involved vary between orchards. Secondary pests viz., fruit-piercing moths, defoliators etc generally occur at sub-economic levels, but can become serious pests as a result of changes in cultural practices and litchi cultivars or because of indiscriminate use of insecticides against a key pest. Recently, litchi fruit borer and litchi leaf roller have acquired the status of major pests and now, litchi looper, litchi bug and bag worm are emerging pests of litchi (Choudhary et al., 2013; Singh et al., 2014). Occasional or incidental pests also can cause economic damage only in localized areas at certain times; the great majority of pests reported here fall within this last category.

Pomegranate (Punica granatum L.) also known Anar in Hindi it is belonging to the Punicaceae family, it is grown in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Originated in Indo-Burma region Iran and is extensively cultivated in the Mediterranean region since ages (Sheikh and Manjula, 2009). Pomegranate is used as table purpose, making juice, jam, jelly and paste. The fruit peel, tree stem and leaves and root bark are good source of secondary metabolites such as tannins, dyes and alkaloids (Mirdehghan and Rahemi, 2007). The edible part of the fruit is the seeds having a fleshy covering and called arils.

India is major pomegranate producing country in the world. In India main pomegranate producing states are Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujrat, Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Rajasthan. Maharashtra is leading state of pomegranate production in India. The prominent pockets where pomegranate cultivated area are concentrated are Solapur, Nashik, Sangli, Satara and ahemednagar districts of Western region of Maharashtra.

Indian total pomegranate crop covers 0.24 Mha and production is 2.87 MT in India (Anonymous 2017). The export of pomegranate from India is only 0.04 MT it is very low. Pomegranate is majorly exported to UAE (43%), Bangladesh (16%) and European Countries (14%) A few tons also go to Saudi Arabia, Russia, Thailand, Nepal, Kuwait etc.

Potato (Solanum tuberosum) is the most important food crop of the world. Potato is a temperate crop grown under subtropical conditions in India. The potato is a crop which has always been the ‘poor man’s friend’. Potato is being cultivated in the country for the last more than 300 years. For vegetable purposes it has become one of the most popular crops in this country. Potatoes are an economical food; they provide a source of low cost energy to the human diet. Potatoes are a rich source of starch, vitamins especially C and B1 and minerals. They contain 20.6 per cent carbohydrates, 2.1 per cent protein, 0.3 per cent fat, 1.1 per cent crude fibre and 0.9 per cent ash. They also contain a good amount of essential amino acids like leucine, tryptophane and isoleucine etc.

Potatoes are used for several industrial purposes such as for the production of starch and alcohol. Potato starch (farina) is used in laundries and for sizing yarn in textile mills. Potatoes are also used for the production of dextrin and glucose. As a food product itself, potatoes are converted into dried products such as ‘potato chips’, ‘sliced’ or ‘shredded potatoes’.

Potato is grown almost in all states of India. However, the major potato rowing states are Himachal Pradesh, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka, West Bengal, Bihar and Assam.

The main constraint to potato farming in India are: It is vulnerable to control the pests hence implying a high risk of failure, growing potatoes requires substantial capital and the crop needs intensive care and attention. However, a proper Biointensive insect pest management programme will minimize losses to potato crop.

Biotic stresses, particularly insect pests adversely affect the economical yield potential and the quality of the widely cultivated spice crops. These pests attack the crops at various developmental stages of the crops. For instance, Pollu beetle alone in black pepper is the most destructive pest and causing 30 to 40% yield loss in humid, tropical evergreen forests of India (Devasahayam, et al., 1988). Considering the cost of cultivation and profitability, it is very important to develop and recommend low cost, economic easily adoptable technologies. Food production process in India during the green revolution period has been based on the use of more chemical fertilizers and pesticides which are detrimental to the environment. The challenge before the crop protection scientists is to boost the yield from the available land without harming the environment. To manage the problem of insect pests in spice crops, farmers are over using synthetic chemical pesticides indiscriminately and this result in environmental degradation and high pesticide residue levels in the produces are are mainly hindering the export. Now the focus is on organic spice production, therefore a search for safer measures of pest and disease management is gaining importance. Integration of various approaches like use of resistant/tolerant varieties, disease or pest free planting materials and exploitation of biological means such as bio- control agents, bio-pesticides, entomo-pathogens, parasitoids and predators at the right time paved the way to achieve this goal (Dhanya et al., 2019; Prakash et al., 2016). Incorporating ecological and economic factors into decision making and addressing the public concerns about environmental quality and food safety is the need of the hour. There is now wide array of techniques available to replace the use of conventional chemical insecticides in IPM programmes. These issues can be sorted out by adopting eco-friendly Biointensive Integrated Pest Management strategy.

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is the largest and most important vegetable crop belongs to family Solanaceae grown all over the world. It is grown for its edible, fleshy, berry typed, mostly red coloured fruits.The species has its origin in coast of Ecuador, Peru, part of Bolivia and the northern region of Chile i.e.western South America and cultivation started most probably by the people of Maxico of Central America^1-3. It is found to be a rich source of many minerals like Ca, K, Cu, Fe, Zn and S and vitamins and other nutritive values so it is cultivated both as protective and supplementary food⁴.In India and in some European countries with common form of tomato fruits the cherry type of tomato fruits also cultivated on large scale. Cherry type of tomato fruits when consumed fresh, act as a very efficient source of diet of urban and rural people as it is reported to be a good source of many macro elements of human requirements such as K, Mg, P and Na⁵. As it is short duration crop and gives high yield, it is important from economic point of view and hence area under its cultivation is increasing day by day. India is considered to be a second largest producer of tomatoes succeeding to China. Tomato is used in preserved products like ketch- up, sauce, chutney, soup, paste, puree etc. Cherry fruits are commonly used in diverse ways, including raw in salads and processed, and their acidity allows for ease of preservation without refrigeration (long shelf life) or home canning processing for later use⁶

Biointensive IPM incorporates ecological and economic factors into agricultural system design and decision making while addressing public concerns about environmental quality and food safety. It provides suitable guidelines and options for the effective management of pests and beneficial organisms in an ecological context in a holistic self-sustaining manner. The flexibility and environmental compatibility of the Biointensive IPM strategy make it useful in all types of cropping systems particularly in an agro-biodiversity rich ecosystem.

Biological activation of grain or germination is a natural, biological processing techniques and traditional method that can be used to improve the nutritional, functional, and sensory properties of grains. During biological activation of grains, extensive phytochemical changes were reported in a variety of food grains, which reflects a dynamic and complex nutrient flux including remobilization, degradation and accumulation. During this process many hydrolytic enzymes were activated to hydrolyze the starches, proteins and, non-starch polysaccharides, which results in more oligosaccharides and free amino acids. Many nutrients and bioactive compounds reportedly increase and then decrease as they are utilized by the growing plant, which results in degradation of the high molecular weight polymers for generation of bio-functional substances. The biological activation of grains also realizes a significant growth of nutritional value by increasing the bioavailability of nutritional compounds, vitamins, bio-elements and other biologically active substances due to the partial hydrolysis of starch, proteins, hemicelluloses and even celluloses. Biological activation triggers the enzymatic activity in grain and dormant hydrolytic enzymes are activated, breaking down starch, fibers and proteins and leading to an increase in the amount of digestible compounds along with improvement of functional properties without any chemical modification. Also, the activity of some anti-nutritional factors (enzyme inhibitors, haemagglutinins, anti-vitamins etc.) decreases or disappears during activation, allowing a complete valorization of biological compounds in grains. During biological activation hydrolytic amylase enzymes, proteolytic enzymes, and catalase were activated in grains, which enhances the starch degradation, a complex biochemical process and thus lead to the conversion of insoluble granules to soluble starch and dextrin. Apart from positive shifting in the level of nutrition, biochemical activities which occur during activation also generate bioactive components of health-promoting activities through the enzymatic actions that are antioxidants in nature, such as ascorbic acid, tocopherols, tocotrienols and phenolic compounds, thus resulting in an increase of antioxidant activity.

Humans have primarily consumed "meat/meat products based on where they lived and how they evolved. According to Food Safety and Standards Act 2006, “meat means fresh meat, poultry and game meat which could be in the form of whole pieces, cuts or comminuted (minced etc.), whereas, meat products are those that have been processed by various methods so that they no longer resemble fresh meat”. These products include meat, poultry, and game products in whole pieces or cuts that are cured salted and dried, processed by non-heat treatment, fermented non-heat treated products, heat treated or frozen products. Edible casings used for sausages etc. also come in the category of meat and meat products. Through a notification dated 12^th September, 2017, the FSSAI has included domestic rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) in the Food Safety and Standards (Food Products Standards and Food Additives) Regulation 2011 in the regulation under meat and meat products.

With the advent of globalisation, there has been an increase in food trade which has led to the introduction of exotic meat and meat products. Moreover, rapidly growing economies like India, now demonstrate a growing appetite for meat. As the consumer demand for high quality meat is increasing in most countries, the meat industry should consistently produce and supply quality meat that is safe and healthy for the consumer to ensure continued consumption of meat products.

ABSTRACT

Bats: A colony of 500 insectivorous bats of Hipposideros speoris inhabited a natural cave in Madurai (9^O58’ N. lat; 78^O10’ E long). At a depth of 40 m, the cave experiences a constant temperature of 27 + 0.1^OC, 95 % relative humidity and absolute and perpetual darkness. Therefore there were no day/night cues. Yet all the members of the bat colony flew out 10 to 15 min. after sunset as though they knew the time of sunset. Recorded flight and rest experiments in flight activity cages and a hand-wound Thermohygrograph drum 40 m from the cave mouth over periods of 50 days revealed that the free-flying conspecific bats were socially synchronizing the activity patterns of the three captive bats. Bats were telling other bats time.

Mice : In the field mouse, Mus booduga the mother conveys information of day and night to her pups by means of her presence and absence (PA) cycles. Her presence meant day and absence denoted night. We named this phenomenon maternal entrainment. Such entrainment of the time sense of the pups was possible if in every cycle the mother was presented for a minimum of 8 hr but not exceeding 16 hr. Therefore 8 hr and 16 hr describe the limits of maternal entrainment.

The basic principles of biological control of pests and diseases remain the same, whether applied to insect pests, nematodes or plant pathogens. In the recent years, there is a paradigm shift towards studying antibiosis and its application in biological suppression of pathogens, yet the classical bio-control will remain as relevant as ever. The following discussion is based on recapitulating the basic principles of classical biological control as applicable to plant parasitic nematodes.

Biological control agents (BCAs) have been exploited for pest control in different ways. One way is to manipulate the naturally occurring BCAs by augmenting their populations to pest suppressive levels. In this approach no BCAs are introduced, but various means such as agronomic practices, introduction of organic matter etc. are adopted to favour the build-up of BCAs. The second way is the introduction of BCAs, either as inoculative or inundative release. In the former case, the BCAs are introduced in small quantities and allowed to build-up gradually in due course of time. However, in the latter approach, BCAs are introduced in large quantities so that quick pest suppression can be achieved. Each method has its own merits and demerits (Table 1).

Biological control or biocontrol is a method of controlling pests such as insects, mites, weeds and plant diseases using other organisms. It relies on predation, parasitism, herbivory, or other natural mechanisms, but typically also involves an active human management role. It can be an important component of integrated pest management (IPM) programs.

Biological control is a strategy which employs utilization of natural enemies to reduce the damage caused by noxious organisms to tolerable levels (De Bach and Rosen, 1991). This is the most benign method for reducing pest population in vegetable ecosystem. It opens an amicable platform for production of organic vegetables with good export value. Since the late 1950s, much of the insect control in vegetables has been based on the use of synthetic chemical insecticides. Insecticides are relatively easy to use and have generally provided effective pest control. It is likely that they will always be a component of pest management programs. But, insecticides have some undesirable attributes. They usually present some degree of hazard to the applicator and other people who may come in contact with them, they can leave residues that some find unacceptable; they can contaminate soil and water and affect wildlife, aquatic life and other non-target organisms, they can interfere with beneficial organisms, such as pollinating insects and the natural enemies of pests. The insects also can develop resistance to insecticide. For these reasons, there is growing interest among farmers, entomologists and gardeners to explore and adopt methods that reduce pesticide use.
