This chapter introduces the biological processes responsible for wool production in sheep. 28.1 Introduction

The use of biological light in active transport, nerve transmission, and muscle contraction is a feature shared by all living organisms. Surprisingly, a large number of living organisms have evolved the ability to convert chemical energy into light, which is manifested as bioluminescence.

Bioluminescence is a fascinating biological phenomenon found in both terrestrial and aquatic living organisms. The light emitted by living organisms as a result of chemical reactions in their bodies is known as bioluminescence. Cold light is produced by this type of chemiluminescence.

Biomass briquetting is the process of compressing loose and low-density biomass materials such as sawdust, agricultural residues, and forest waste into high-density, solid fuel blocks called briquettes. The process involves mechanical compression under high pressure using machines like piston presses, screw extruders, or hydraulic presses, depending on the technology used.
The main purpose of briquetting is to increase the density of biomass to improve its combustion properties, handling, transportation, and storage efficiency. In most modern systems, briquetting is done without the use of binders, as natural lignin present in the biomass acts as a binding agent under pressure and heat.

We’ll discuss the importance of biomass composition, moisture content, ash content, elemental analysis, calorific value, and other relevant parameters when assessing its suitability for energy conversion. Additionally, we’ll highlight the significance of biomass characterization in understanding biomass feedstock variability and its impact on energy production efficiency, environmental performance, and sustainability.

1.1 General

Biomass is a renewable and plentiful energy source with enormous potential to meet the rising demand for clean and sustainable energy solutions. This chapter offers an overview of biomass and its conversion technology, which includes various techniques to transform biomass into useful forms of energy like heat, electricity, and biofuels.

Biomass is an organic substance obtained from plants, animals, and microorganisms. It can be utilized as a source of energy or as a basic material in various applications. The energy in biomass is derived from photosynthesis, during which plants convert sunlight, carbon dioxide, and water into organic matter. Since it comes from living or recently deceased organisms, it is a sustainable and renewable resource. In terms of carbon dioxide emissions, biomass is considered a carbon-neutral energy source because the carbon dioxide produced during combustion is offset by the carbon dioxide absorbed by plants during their growth.

5.1 Introduction

The densification of biomass involves transforming loose and low-density organic materials, such as wood residues, agricultural waste, and plant-based materials, into compact and energy-dense forms. This process is necessary because natural biomass can be challenging to handle, transport, and store. Densification uses mechanical, thermal, or chemical processes to increase the material’s density and energy characteristics. The resulting products, such as pellets, briquettes, or cubes, offer several advantages, including higher energy content per unit volume, efficient storage and transportation, reduced moisture content, and improved combustion efficiency. These products are utilized in various industries, including energy production, residential heating, waste management, and industrial applications. Biomass densification promotes sustainable practices by effectively utilizing biomass resources, reducing waste, and promoting the use of renewable energy sources while mitigating environmental impacts.

2.1 Introduction

Biomass store solar energy in the chemical form and it is most precious and versatile resources on earth. Biomass, unlike fossil fuels, is a renewable energy resource that is available where the climatic conditions are favorable for plant growth and production¹. The term biomass is used for all organic materials which are combustible in nature, mainly plant and animal origin present in land and aquatic environments. Biomass is considered carbon neutral, because the amount of carbon it can release is equivalent to the amount it absorbed during its life time. There is no net increase of carbon to the environment in the long term when combusting the lignocellulosic materials. Therefore, we can say that biomass is a renewable source of energy and can play vital role in responding to concerns over the protection of the environment and the security of energy supply^2,3.

Biomass energy accounts for about 15% of the world’s primary energy consumption and about 38% of the primary energy consumption in developing countries⁴. Furthermore, biomass often accounts for more than 90% of the total rural energy supplies in developing countries⁵. It is the main source to meet out domestic energy in developing countries⁶. The efficient use of fuel wood is much more eco-friendly than the use of efficient and conventional fuels like kerosene and liquefy petroleum gas (LPG). LPG emits 15 times more CO₂ per kg than wood, and kerosene emits nearly 10 times as much. CO₂ is the prominent candidate for global. It is commonly assumed that biomass fuel cycles based on renewable in nature and greenhouse-gas (GHG) neutral because the combusted carbon in the form of CO₂ is soon taken up by re-growing vegetation⁷.

5.1 Introduction

Biomass energy is the energy obtained from biomass or living things. Biomass is renewable organic material that comes from plants and animals. Plants generally produced through the process of photosynthesis as shown in Figure 5.1. Biomass is organic, meaning it is made of material that comes from living things, such as plants and animals. Wood, plants, and waste are the most common biomass energy sources. These are called biomass feedstocks. A plant absorbs the sun’s energy through photosynthesis and converts carbon dioxide and water into nutrients (carbohydrates). The energy from these materials can be transformed into usable energy through direct and indirect means. Biomass can be burned to create heat (direct), converted into electricity (direct), or processed into biofuel (indirect).

7.1 Introduction

Biomass gasification is age old technology originated in 1800 century for lighting and cooking purposes (Sansaniwal et al., 2017). Biomass typically contents biopolymers such as cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin in addition to the presence of average composition of C₆H₁₀O₅ which depends upon physical characteristics of biomass¹. Oxygen is required for combustion of every fuel. For complete combustion of biomass stoichiometric air to fuel ratio required varies from 6:1 to 6.5:1 with CO₂ and H₂O as end product.

Biomass gasification is an efficient and environmentally friendly way to produce energy². Gasification process is nothing but it is a conversion of solid fuel into gaseous fuel for wide applications. This whole process completed at elevated temperature range of 800-1300 ^oC with series of chemical reaction that is why it come under thermo chemical conversion³. Thermo chemical processes are most commonly employed for converting biomass into higher heating value fuels⁴. Major thermal conversion route is include direct combustion to provide heat, liquid fuel and other elements to generate process heat for thermal and electricity generation is summaries in Fig. 7.1.

A biomass gasifier is an advanced device designed to convert solid biomass materials-such as wood chips, crop residues, saw-dust, coconut shells, and other organic matter-into a combustible gas mixture known as producer gas. The conversion process, known as gasification, is a thermo-chemical process that takes place in a controlled environment with limited oxygen. Unlike complete combustion, gasification allows only partial oxidation of biomass, producing a gas rich in carbon monoxide (CO), hydrogen (H2), methane (CH4), and nitrogen (N2). This gas mixture can be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines, power generation, cooking, or industrial heating applications.
Principle of Gasification
Gasification involves a sequence of four key thermo-chemical reactions within the reactor, occurring at temperatures ranging from 800–1000°C:
1. Drying Zone: Moisture present in the biomass is evaporated due to the rising heat.

2. Pyrolysis Zone: Biomass decomposes in the absence of oxygen to form volatile gases, tar, and solid char.

3. Oxidation Zone: A small amount of air or oxygen is introduced to partially combust the biomass, generating heat to sustain the process.

This chapter introduces the concept of Biomass Management Techniques as a pivotal framework for optimizing the utilization of biomass resources. With a focus on sustainable practices, this chapter delves into various techniques to handle, process, and utilize biomass efficiently. From collection and transportation to storage, conversion, and beyond, Biomass Management Techniques encompass a wide array of methods that ensure the seamless integration of biomass into energy generation, industrial processes, and environmental conservation.

6.1 Introduction

Biomass pellets are one of the most common types of biomass fuel. It is generally composed of wood waste, agricultural biomass, grasses, and forest residues, and is one of the most popular types of biomass fuel available today. Pelletization of biomass results in significant savings in terms of transportation, and storage, as well as the ease of handling biomass as a whole. In terms of flowability, dense cube pellets are similar to cereal grains in terms of their characteristics of being dense and cube-shaped. Due to their regular geometry and small size, biomass pellets are easily fed through an automatic feed system with fine calibration thanks to their regular shape. Because pellets are so dense, they can be stored in a compact way and transported over a long distance in a rational and efficient manner, because of their density. Furthermore, pellets can also be produced with a low moisture content, even though they are extremely dense. This allows them to burn with a high degree of combustion efficiency due to their low moisture content.

The weight of living plant material contained above and below a unit of ground surface area at a given point of time, is known as plant “Biomass”. Biomass is of utter importance because it provides energy source (Roberts et al. 1987).

Biomass, which has dimensions of mass per unit, is expressed as g m^-2, kg ha^-1 or t ha^-1.

Measurement of Biomass

The area (in the crop field) under study is divided into a number of equal squares or rectangular plots measuring 1.0 m² or 0.5 m². Each square is designated with a particular number. Sample can be harvested from a small area or quadrate at the centre of each square; the remaining peripheral area serving as buffer zone (Wiegert, 1962).

Nanotechnology is the manoeuvring or self-assembly of individual atoms, molecules, or molecular clusters into structures to craft materials with new properties. The definition of nanotechnology is based on the prefix “nano” which is from the Greek word meaning “dwarf”. In more technical terms, the word “nano” means 10^-9, or one billionth of something. The word nanotechnology is generally used when referring to materials with the size of 1 to 100 nanometres, which is true for metallic nano-material. In case of polymeric nano-material, size may reach 600 nm, as polymeric materials are larger in size compression to metallic material. Nano-materials have different properties from bulk materials as a result of their size. These differences include physical strength, chemical reactivity, electrical conductance, magnetism, and optical effects (Schmid, 2006).

Animals experience the effects of force in everyday life. For example, the animal body exerts a force on the body and to the objects during various agricultural operations. Furthermore, the gravitational force exerts continuously, for instance while sitting, walking, etc. All parts of the body in one way or the other are loaded by forces. The bones provide rigidity to the body and can sustain high loads. The skin is resistant to force. The cardiovascular system is continuously loaded dynamically owing to the pulsating blood pressure. The term "nano" is used to define one that has a size in the nanometer range. Nanotechnology is an interdisciplinary field of medicine, chemistry, physics, and biology that has emerged during the past few decades as a potential area of study. The goal of this interdisciplinary technology is to transform molecules into entities, then do the opposite. Nanobiotechnology is the term for the fusion of nanotechnology with biotechnology. In nanobiotechnology nanoscale principles and techniques are used to explore biosystems and generate novel biomaterials. Biosensing, cell labelling, and molecular imaging can all gain benefit from nanostructure materials in life science, health and biomedicine.

Green nanocomposites offer promising possibilities for biomedical applications because biodegradable matrices can be combined with nanoscale fillers to obtain specific functional properties. This chapter explores their applications in tissue engineering and drug delivery, with attention to materials such as chitosan, alginate, cellulose, and polylactic acid. It discusses the fundamentals of green nanocomposites, tissue-engineering applications, controlled drug delivery, toxicity, biocompatibility, regulatory considerations, and current limitations. Nanocomposite systems can provide useful mechanical, thermal, antimicrobial, antioxidant, and therapeutic characteristics while supporting more sustainable material development. The chapter highlights the importance of balancing biomedical functionality, safety, environmental responsibility, processing requirements, and long-term biological compatibility.

Phenotypic Diversity

Phenotypic diversity measures the portion of genetic diversity which is expressed phenotypically. So it varies with the character under study and the genetic background and the environment in which it is measured. The measures of genetic diversity based on variance of quantitative traits may be unreliable indicators of diversity in a population at the level of individual gene. But diversity at the molecular level (isozymes, RFLPs) may be a reasonable estimate of phenotypic diversity. The degree of differentiation is related to several biological attributes such as breeding system, mode of pollination and seed dispersal, life history, geographical range, successional stages, etc. The outbreeding populations are much less differentiated whereas the selfers or apomictic are strongly differentiated. Populations of outbreeders contain different alleles especially the rare alleles which contribute little to the diversity. Inbreeders should have greater interpopulations diversity and less intrapopulation diversity than the comparable outbreeders. Further, inbreeders are more prone to show an even distribution of their genetic diversity among populations and this makes their optimum sampling more difficult and any evidence of the geographic pattern of this diversity levels would greatly improve sampling efficiency but geographical and environmental factors rarely explain more than 50% variation.

Biometrical genetics: This is a branches of genetics which uses the statistical concept and procedures for the study of genetic principles.

The need for better analytical tools to analyze the data in aquaculture leads to major developments in statistics. These tools play a significant role in the analysis and interpretation of data. Improvement in carp culture through genetic techniques is the only alternative for increasing the carp production and its quality when area of pond is fixed. For better hybrids or efficient strains for higher production it is essential to collect the data on the genetic diversity among the different carp species on the basis of traits. Therefore, sound statistical procedures are needed in the design of experiments as well as in the analysis of the data. This involves, the use of variability studies and the use of multivariate statistical techniques like correlations, path coefficients, D² analysis and other classificatory analysis.

Biometry is the measurement of various grossly visible dimensions of organs and their application in statistical analysis to generate biological data.

The biometry of different organs is conducted with the help of non-stretchable thread, Vernier callipers, measuring scale, protector, glass beaker of various sizes, calibrated measuring cylinders, etc. While conducting biometry, it should be kept in mind that the way or the procedure for conducting biometry of different organs varies due to variation in shapes of the same and their positions. 1. Length: May be used to measure the distance between the highest points along the length of any bone or organ. Usually expressed in cm. Non-stretchable thread, Vernier callipers and measuring scale are used for this purpose.

7.1.1. What is BioNet International

BioNET-International, is the Global Network for Taxonomy, and is dedicated to creating sustainable mechanisms to assist developing countries to overcome the Taxonomic Impediment by becoming self-reliant in taxonomy i.e. self-reliant in the skills, infrastructure (collections etc.) and technologies needed to discover, identify, name and classify and to understand the relationships of all organisms on this planet.

It is concerned with helping developing countries to recognise and know the organisms that constitute and threaten their biodiversity, not for taxonomy’s own sake, but rather to support national programmes for sustainable agricultural development, and conservation and sustainable use of the environment.

BioNET-International is particularly focused on helping countries implement the various environmental conventions such as the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC; www.ippc.int) and the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD; www.biodiv.org), especially its taxonomic capacity building compnent, the Global Taxonomy Initiative (GTI). The subregional networks of BioNET-International have been identified as appropriate structures through which much of the GTI (www.biodiv.org/programmes/cross-cutting/taxonomy/default.asp) can be effectively implemented.

The single piece of legislation under the Indian Government that regulates the import, manufacturing, sale, transportation, distribution, and use of all varieties of insecticides, including biopesticides, is the Insecticide Act (1968). Various parameters like shelf life, cross-contamination, moisture content, and packaging are significant factors that must be addressed before a biopesticide is registered. According to Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development’s (OECD) recommendations, CIB simplified the protocols and listed the infrastructure needs for manufacturing of biopesticides. Information required to generate toxicity calls a strenuous effort.

Agriculture is the main source of income of the rural masses in India and the disease accounts for more than 30% losses every year. According to a WHO estimate of 1990. There were 25 million cases of acute occupational pesticides poisoning in developing countries each year. ILO 1996 estimates suggests that out of 14% of all known occupational injuries 10% of all total injuries are caused by pesticides. Further more developing countries are a dustbin for the developed countries. More than 20, 000 tonnes of obsolete pesticides are dumped in Africa alone. The biopesticides are amenable to small scale and local production. Presently there is an increased awareness regarding environmental and food safety. The biopesticides as such can be used as an essential and fundamental component of integrated pest management. It helps to manage the disease which are difficult, otherwise to be managed and so also these control the pests resistant to conventional pesticides. Paulitz and Belanger (2001) has reviewed the potential of biological control in green house systems.

Three kinds of biocontrol products are being used in India which include 1) Microbial biopesticides, 2) Plant-derived botanical pesticides, and 3) Pheromones or other natural insect growth regulators. Microbial biopesticides consist majorly of fungi, bacteria, viruses or entomopathogenic nematodes as bioactive principles.

Introduction

Huge population in the developing countries requires increased amounts of food and fiber from a shrinking agricultural land base. Intensification of agriculture through expansion of irrigation facilities, introduction of high yielding varieties and application of increased amounts of agrochemicals has been in progress. Besides, the cultural practices like spacing, crop rotations, sowing times and tillage methods have been modified to achieve maximum productively per unit time from the available land. However, along with various technological achievements, sever outbreaks of insect pests, diseases and weeds in agricultural crops have also occurred. Many hitherto unknown species have assumed serious status and some of the serious pests have developed resistance to one or more groups of pesticides. In addition, pesticides have contaminated different components of our environment and pose a potential health hazard to consumers. Therefore, the future pest problems will have to be tackled in an environmentally benign manner as a part of a sustainable crop production technology (Dhaliwal and Heinrichs, 1998; Koul et al., 2004; Koul, 2008).

Worldwide, various biopesticides have been created and are in use, including viruses, microorganisms (bacteria, fungi, etc.), microorganism derived products, animal derived goods (pheromones, hormones, insect-specific toxins, etc.), plant derived products, and genetically modified organisms (Nicholson 2007; Erlandson 2008; Mazhabi et al. 2011; Islam and Omar 2012).

Introduction of improved high yielding varieties of crop plants, use of modern agricultural practices coupled with essential control of pests of food and fiber crops have significantly contributed towards increasing the food production in green revolution era in India. Pesticide application forms the foremost limb in hiked agricultural food production and management practices. The production and post production management of crop yield requires increased use of pesticides.

Definition

“Biological pesticides”, or “Biopesticides” as the name suggests, are naturally occurring substances that biologically control harmful pests, especially among field crops. These are naturally produced bio chemical materials basically non-toxic to the environment that can be employed in pest control. Biopesticides could mean living organisms (bacteria, virus, and algae), their products (biochemicals produced by them) and also plant byproducts. Biopesticides offer an ecologically effective solution to the harmful effects of synthetic pesticides.

Chemical pesticides though extremely effective in controlling pest population suffer from disadvantages. They have a broad toxic range and potentially toxic to non target organisms. Other constraints that have emerged with the use of chemical pesticides such as development of resistance and resurgence in insects, residual toxicity, secondary outbreak of minor insect pests, etc., In this juncture, the biopesticides have proven to be effective tool in managing the devastating insect pests of various crops.

The biopesticides are types of pesticides derived from natural materials such as microorganisms, plants, animals and certain minerals. They are living organisms or their products or byproducts, which can be used for the management of pests that are injurious to crop plants. Biopesticides have a vital role in crop protection, although most commonly in combination with other tools including chemical pesticides as part of integrated pest management (IPM). Microorganisms help to regulate the abundance of many pests or potential pests without any cost to society. Microbes can be increased artificially and thereby achieve faster, higher and more consistent control of the target pests that will occur naturally. Insect pathogens that are transmissible in nature from one host to another offer an important bonus effect that chemical insecticides do not have. A pathogen will kill pests exposed and many continue killing them by natural transmission from one individual host to another through subsequent host generation.

Biopesticides generally have several advantages compared to conventional pesticides. While chemical pesticides are responsible for extensive pollution of the environment, a serious health hazard due to the presence of their residues in food and development of resistance in targeted insect pest populations, biopesticides, in contrast, are inherently less toxic to humans and the environment, do not leave harmful residues, and are usually more specific to target pests. The agents employed as biopesticides, include parasites, predetors and disease causing fungi, bacteria and viruses, which are the natural enemies of pests. Utilization of naturally occurring parasites, predators and pathogens for pest control is a classical biological control. These bio agents can be conserved, preserved and multiplied under laboratory condition for field release. Once these bio-agents are introduced in the field to build their population considerably, they are capable of bringing down the targeted pest population below economic threshold level (ETL).

Biopesticides presents biologically derived pest-management products as alternatives or complements to synthetic pesticides. Biopiracy is inherently unjust as it involves the misappropriation of community knowledge, undermining the rights of indigenous peoples, and violating the principles of equity, fairness, and sovereignty over natural resources.
As globalization intensifies biotechnological exploration, biopiracy challenges ethical norms and highlights the need for strong legal, institutional, and ethical safeguards.

Packaging waste forms a significant part of solid waste and has caused increasing environmental concerns, resulting in strengthening of various regulations aimed at reducing the amounts generated. A wide range of oil-based polymers is currently used for packaging of various products by different industries including the food industry. These are virtually non-biodegradable and some are difficult to recycle or re-use as they are complex composites having varying levels of contaminants and pose serious health concerns. In the recent years, the use of bio-based and biodegradable products as packaging material has generated a lot of interest amongst researchers as they bring out a significant contribution to sustainable development with a wider range of disposal options.

Bioplastics are polymers that are capable of undergoing decomposition into CO₂, H₂O and inorganic compounds or biomass through predominantly the enzymatic action of microorganisms. Some of these polymers can also be compostable, which leads to their decomposition in a compost site at a rate consistent with known compostable materials. The market for these environmentally friendly materials is expanding rapidly, at the rate of 10–20 per cent per year. The global market for biodegradable polymers exceeds 114 million pounds and is expected to rise at an average annual growth rate of 12.6 per cent to 206 million pounds by 2020.

Bio-based packaging materials are mostly used to pack short shelf-life products, like fresh fruits and vegetables, and long shelf-life products, like pasta and chips, which do not require very high oxygen and/or water barrier properties. However, the inventory of films shows a wide variety in properties, which could make them applicable as a packaging material for other food products with stricter conditions, like MAP packaging. One of the challenges faced by the food packaging industry in its efforts to produce bio-based primary packaging, is to match the durability of the packaging with product shelf-life. The bio-based material offers great potential for the packaging industry. However, it is important to realize that a thorough evaluation of the functional properties of a bio-based material is essential before it can be used as an alternative for the traditional film materials.

Tropical root and tuber crops are important staples for food security for about a fifth of the world population. Tropical root and tuber crops like cassava, sweet potato, yams and aroids [taro and elephant foot yam] come under tropical root and tuber crops. Sweet potato, yams and colocasia are processed mainly as fresh vegetable, whereas 75% of the cassava in Africa, 75-80% in Asia and 65% in Latin America are processed either as fermented foods and feeds or as food additives such as starch, starch based sweeteners (glucose and fructose syrups), organic acids (acetic, lactic, glutamic and gluconic), mono-sodium glutamate and microbial polysaccharides (xanthan, pullulan, scleroglucan, etc).

Ethnopharmacology and Traditional medines use natural resources as medicines. They have developed the knowledge of this through the generations of traditions and experiences. Therefore the protection of this knowledge and protection of natural resources both remain critical. Bioprospecting involves sustainable, ethical and legal processes to access natural resources and use them judicially so that the business needs do not pose any threat to nature and to people.

One important consideration is assuring the preservation of traditional knowledge, particularly oral knowledge, within communities, for the potential benefit of others. Developing mechanisms to document traditional knowledge, such as national inventories, can be beneficial in identifying cases where conservation or cultivation is needed, based on an understanding of existing natural resources used for medicinal purposes. Decisions about access and ownership of information can also be made (including those relating to intellectual property rights, where appropriate) once methods have been found to collect and preserve traditional knowledge. On the other hand, the livelihood of traditional healers may depend on maintaining the secrecy of their healing methods - one argument for consulting with traditional healers as part of the process of planning and executing the collection, storage and testing of traditional medicines.

Extending some form of intellectual property protection to traditional knowledge, of which traditional medical knowledge is a significant part, is being actively debated in WIPO and other international forums. Existing intellectual property regimes can offer protection for purified compounds (produced by scientists and companies) isolated from a natural medicine. But traditional medicines, whose method of action may not be well understood, and which often consist of mixtures of different active substances, may not meet criteria for patentability. The principal impetus for international debate is a desire to compensate the holders of traditional knowledge appropriately for the use of their knowledge by others, or to prevent so-called “biopiracy” where knowledge or genetic materials are used without the consent of the holder. China and Kenya are examples of countries that have modified their laws in an effort to accommodate traditional medicine. It is not intended that the Commission should enter into this debate, except in so far as aspects of it may be relevant to its terms of reference, in particular stimulating innovation in traditional medicine with the purpose of expanding access to affordable medicines.

In addition, they are used to produce various hormones, enzymes and hemoglobin in human body. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization estimates that nearly 870 million people of the 7.1 billion people in the world, or one in eight, were suffering from chronic undernourishment in 2010-2012. There are 925 million people undernourished in developed countries (FAO October, 2010). This situation has created a demand for the formulation of innovative and alternative proteinaceous food sources having high nutritional value. These sources have to be non-competitive with food for human consumption, economically feasible and locally available. This demands a search for new protein sources, with high nutritional value, economically feasible and locally available. Use of microbes as a food source is one of the biotechnological innovations that will certainly increase the availability of affordable protein in the world to solve the global food and feed problems.

Due to their ability to form complex compounds, some heavy metals are essential trace elements. In any case, essential or not, most heavy metals are toxic at higher concentration. Heavy metal pollution from last few decades has led to an increased environmental concern. Heavy metal like cadmium is a non-essential toxic heavy metal and is also being increased in soil during last few years posing a serious threat to environment and human health worldwide. Therefore, remediation strategies of the contaminated sites are great concerns and can be achieved by a number of different physico-chemical and biological means.

On the other hand, the nonhazardousBMW which are not harmful, include packaging material made upof plastic & thermocol, cardboards, paper waste etc. (Capoor & Parida, 2021).

Chemical pesticides are designed to control or eliminate pests such as insects, rodents, weeds, bacteria, and fungus. Although pesticides have played a significant role in increasing food production and controlling various diseases in the agriculture system but indiscriminate use of pesticides has resulted in contamination of soil, water bodies’ etc. raising deep concern about food safety and human health. Excessive use of these harmful chemicals affects kidneys, developing fetus, and liver immuno-suppression and increased incidence of breast cancer. Some of these pesticides are also reported as mutagenic. Other health related problems such as impaired memory and concentration, severe depression, headache, etc have also been reported.

Through field survey (Kadian et al., 2010) it has been found that chlorpyrifos is a widely used pesticide in household application as well as in horticulture crop in National capital region Delhi. This tempted us to understand the nature of chlorpyrifos (CPF) and its metabolites and assess the suitability of available techniques for detoxification of contaminated soil.
