The body condition scoring (BCS) is a subjective estimate of the energy reserves in adipose tissues of an animal. It is an acceptive, non-invasive, quick and inexpensive method to estimate degree of fatness. It is a means of accurately determining body condition of dairy cows, independent of body weight and frame size. It is evinced that the profile of lactating cows in milch barn is different e.g. some may be in early lactation and the others may either be in mid or late lactation. The observations on body condition status of animal will help the manager to adopt corrective management measures, thus enabling to improve the production profile of an animal. Hence, body condition scoring may be used as an efficient tool in this regard. Although many may consider this as a nutritional management practice, but changing BCS have implications on milk yield, health, reproduction, longevity and overall profitability of an animal. Water : Importance of Water in Physiological Functions of the Body

A large proportion of the body of mammals including domestic animals, is made up of water. This water is an essential attributes for the life of the animals. Animals deprived of food but provided water will survive much longer than the animals provided with food but deprived of water. Water is the basis of the liquid environment of the cells, which Claude Bernard called the milieur interieur, and Cannon the fluid matrix. Its most important biophysical qualities are its solvent properties, its ionization and its heat of vaporization. Water is essential for metabolic processes, as most of these reactions must occur in aquatic environment. Water provides the medium for the transport of nutrients from their sites of absorption to the site of metabolism. Water also provides the medium for the transport of waste products from their sites of production to their sites of final excretion. Together with the main electrolytes, water forms an excellent buffering medium. Moreover, water is an essential substrate or end product of many biological reactions. Water due to its high latent heat of evaporation or fusion is an excellent insulator for the loss of body heat and is essentially required for the loss of heat to maintain body temperature, through the evaporation of water from the skin and the respiratory tract. Water also acts as a vehicle for the transportation of nutrients, hormones, waste products and gases etc.

Body water is derived from several sources which include the water drunk, intake of water through food and metabolic body water. Water is lost from the body through several routes which include loss of water through the feces and urine, evaporation of water from the skin and respiratory tract.

The concentration of water in the body varies from one tissue to another, being least in the dentine of teeth and greatest in the grey matter of the brain. The amount of water in the body also varies considerably with the age of the animal. The younger animals contain considerably more water than the older animals. This effect is mostly due to increase in the fatty tissues in the body, which contains relatively much less water, as the relative composition of tissues of the body other than fat remains relatively constant. The proportion of water in ruminants is higher as compared to nonruminants.

The two different compartments of the body fluids are extracellular fluid (ECF) and intracellular fluid (ICF) with variation in solute concentrations.
The extracellular fluid is the fluid in the cardiovascular system or in between the cells, called interstitial fluid.

The animals, which are aquatic cold blooded respires with the help of gills and swim with the help of fins such animals are called as fishes. Fishes have various body forms according to the environment and in changing the life of fish the body form of fish are found. The fish swim in water with the help of fins. The fins are present on all body of the fish. In swimming the body form is also important. Following are the various body forms found in fishes.

Body Forms

Following are some of the body forms in fishes:

1. Anguilliform body from:- When in fishes the body form is the anguilliform shape and size, like that of eel or anguilla type, then such body form is called as angilliform body form.

2. Depressiform body form :- When in the fishes body form is flattened from above downwards, means the body form is depressed dorso-ventrally it is called as depressiform body forms like that of angler fish, ray fish is also called dorso-ventrally depressed.

3. Disciform body form :- When in fishes the body form is flattened form sides or the fish is laterally compressed on both sides that type is called as disciform body form of laterally compressed body form like that of flat fishes.

Grasshoppers are highly voracious herbivores having the world wide distribution. It is particularly found across — Asia, Africa, Europe and Australia. In India it may be seen in abundance during monsoon season. This pest is of International importance and the following three species are commonly found in India of which desert grasshopper is predominant all over the country.

Centre of gravity

It is most commonly located is the middle of the rib cage, just caudal to the line separating the cranial and middle third of the body because the CG & located more cranially. The forelimbs bear 60-65% of body weight. This causes an increased stress of forelimb and increase incidence of lameness. The horse that is taller over the group than the wither has an additional disadvantage, because PTS CG is shifted further forwards.

1. Bone grafts

Bone grafting represents one of the earliest devised reconstructive approaches to the musculoskeletal system and remains among the most commonly used orthopedic procedures. Bone is the second most frequently transplanted tissue. The first recorded attempt to use bone graft is by the Dutch surgeon Job Van Meek’ren in 1668.

Definition

A graft is a living tissue that is transplanted to another site either within the same individual or into another individual for repair of a defect. An implant is a non viable material placed in a living system. Implants are composed of bone cement, metal or ceramic material. Grafts are structurally important for mechanical stability, but their use evolved to include the stimulation and enhancement of bone in response to injury.

Indications

Bone grafts are used, in general as framework, both to provide stability and to augment healing. It is used in the management of non union, delayed union, treatment of pseudoarthrosis, filling of osseous defects or cavities, arthrodesis, stabilization of spinal segments and addition of bone stock in total joint displacement.

Bone marrow is a soft, gelatinous tissue that fills the medullary cavities of bones. It plays a crucial role in the production of blood cells. It makes up about 3% of body mass in rats, 2% in dogs, and 5% in humans. Bone marrow develops in the embryo during the second trimester of pregnancy. This tissue is vital because it contains stem cells that can differentiate into various cell types. Bone marrow is of red and yellow types. In young mammals, the marrow is red and active (with minimal fat). With aging, accumulation of adipose tissue, and long bones transition turn bone marrow to yellow, fatty, inactive. In adult mammals, active hematopoiesis continues in flat bones, such as the sternum, ribs, pelvis, vertebrae, and skull, as well as the epiphyses of long bones. Erythropoiesis in these regions contributes significantly to red blood cell production, with the axial skeleton accounting for about 35% and the appendicular skeleton for 65%. In birds, hematopoiesis is mainly restricted to bone marrow, while in reptiles, it occurs in the bone marrow, spleen, liver, and thymus. Indications

In 1965, Urist demonstrates that the implantation of demineralized bone at extra skeletal sites induced de novo formation of cartilage and bone and proposed that the decalcified bone matrix possess high osteoinductive property and the inductor is a unique chemical that differentiates mesenchymal type cells (pericytes) into new bone. Urist and Starates (1971) reported that the inductor is a protein and termed it bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) . BMP is the bone induction principle.

Sources: Bone morphogenetic protein isolate from bovine as well as human bone and designated as bBMP and hBMP respectively. The molecular cloning of the bone morphogenetic proteins and their subsequent expression in recombinant system, resulted recombinant bone morphogenetic protein designated as rhBMP. BMP has been extracted from dentin and bone matrix, as well as from bone tumours, by enzymatic and nonenzymatic methods. The sources of BMP, thus far explored are rabbit dentin, rat, rabbit and bovine bone, human bone, mouse or human osteosarcoma and human placenta.

BMP circulates in the blood and it can be detected by BMP-radioimmunoassay. BMP levels higher in growing children (20-72 ng/ml) and patients with Paget’s disease (over 259 ng//ml) than in normal adults (14-18ng/ml). Crude and partially purified BMP has been extracted with the aid of collagenase, ethylene glycol, calcium chloride urea and Guanidine hydrochloride (GuHCL) solution. Wang et al (1988) purified BMP factor that induces bone formation> 300,000 fold from Guanidine chloride extracts of demineralized bone. As littlie as 50ng of this factor can induce the formation of cartilage and bone in an in vivo assay, though only 40µg could be obtained from 400kg of bovine bone powder.

DIGITS

Four digits are presents in the ox of these two the third and forth -are fully developed and have three phalanges and three sesamoid each.The second and fifth are vestiges.

The interdigital surface is flattened and its volor parts bears a prominence for the attachment of the interdigital ligaments.

The proximal extremity is relatively large and somewhat compressed from side to side.

The articular surface is concave from before backword and is divided by sagittal groove in two areas, of which the aboxial one is the larger and higher.

Behind tese are two facets for articulation with the sesamoid bones.

Definition

Fracture is a disolution of bony continuity with or without displacement of the fragments.

Bone is an integral part of musculo-skeletal system of body. In the living animal it is bluish pink, whereas, fresh dead bone is yellowish-white in colour. It is hard and resistant to pressure but also have certain amount of elasticity. Its tensile strength is equal to the cast iron, though bone three times lighter and ten times flexible to cast iron.

Number of bones: The number of bones of the skeleton varies with age and species. Number of bones in cattle-210; Horse-208; Dog-271; Fowl-166 and human-208 (207-212)

Composition of bone: Bone contains different bone cells, organic and inorganic matrix and water. Organic matrix is about one-third and Inorganic matrix is two-third weight by volume. The organic material consists of 90% collagen [type-I (maximum), type V and type XII] and 10% non-collagenous glycoprotein and bone specific proteoglycans (osteocalcin, osteonectin, sialoprotein, bone phosphoproteins and small proteoglycans) and bone growth factors [TGF-beta family; Insulin-like growth factor-1, 2; bone morphogenetic protein (BMP); platelet derived growth factor (PDGF); Interleukin -1 (IL-1); Interleukin-6 (IL-6); colony stimulating factor]. Organic matrix of bone resembles the matrix of dense fibrous tissues such as tendons, ligament and joint capsule. It is not certain whether all of these proteins are synthesized by bone cells or whether they are synthesized by cells outside of the bone and then incorporated into the bone matrix. However, their presence within bone and their potential to affect the activity of bone cells suggests they have important role in controlling bone cell functions. Inorganic matrix of bone or mineral component of bone serves as an ion reservoir and gives bone of its stiffness and strength. It reserves 99% of body calcium, 85% body phosphorus and 40-60% body sodium and magnesium. Inorganic matrix of bone is composed of 85% calcium phosphate, 12% calcium carbonate, 3% of magnesium phosphate, calcium fluoride and magnesium carbonate. It also contains traces of chlorine, sodium, potassium. These minerals remain as hydroxyapatite crystal form within bone. However, bone mineral crystal is not pure hydroxyapatite, instead they contain both carbonate and acid phosphate groups (HPO₄) and bone crystal does not contain OH groups. Bone matrix has such great durability and stability that it can remain essentially unchanged and retain much of its strength for centuries after death. Removal of organic matters renders the bone fragile, brittle and shattered, whereas, decalcification renders bone soft and pliable and resistant to fracture.

Bone

Bones provide the rigid framework of the body of animals and man. The skeletal system serves three main functions. (1) It supports and protects the soft tissues and organs of the body. (2) It helps to maintain, through homeostatic regulation, the constancy of the ionic environment within the organism. (3) It helps in locomotion with the help of muscles and tendons.

The ends of long bone is called the epiphysis: the long, compact shaft, the diaphysis where it joins the epiphysis, the metaphysis. The diaphysis is composed of a hollow cylinder which contained the medullary cavity and bone marrow. During postnatal life, erythropoiesis occurs mainly in the bone marrow. In the adult, bone contains on wet weight basis approximately 25% water, 45 Percent ash and 30 percent organic matter. With increasing age, the ash content progressively increases as the water content decreases; the organic fraction remains relatively constant. Calcium constitutes about 37% of the ash content, and phosphorus about 18.5%.

FEMUR

The femur has a relatively small shaft, which is cylindrical in its middle. The trochanter minor has the form of a rough tuberosity.

The trochanteric ridge connects it with the trochanter major. The third trochanter is absent. The supracondyloid fossa is shallow. The proximal extremity is very wide.

The fovea capitis is a small depression on the middle of the heacKfor the attachment of the round ligament.

The trochanter major is very massive and is undivided; its lateral surface is very rough. The trochanteric fossa is deep. The ridges of the trochlea are less oblique.

The ilia are almost parallel to each other and form a much smaller angle with the horizontal plane than in the horses.they are relatively small. The glutei line is prominent and nearly parallel to the lateral border,it joins the ischiatic spine.A rounded ridge separates the two parts of pelvic surface.The surface for articulation with sacrum is triangular. The tuber coxae is relatively prominent and not so oblique as in horses, wide in middle,smaller at either end.Shaft is short and compressed from side to side.

Ischium is large.Its long axis is directed obliquely upward and downward forming an angle of 5o to 60 degree with horizontal plane.The transverse axis is obliquely downward and inward at similar angle so concave from side to side.Ventral surface has rough ridge for muscular attatchment. The ischiatic spine is high and thin and bears a series of vertical rough line. lschiuatic arch is narrow and deep.The tuber ischii is large and three sided bearing dorsal ,ventral, lateral tuberosities.The symphysis bears a ventral ridge which fades out at ischial arch.The acetabular branch of pubis is narrow and is directed laterally,and a little forward.The anterior border is marked by a transverse groove which ends below rough iliopectineal eminence. The symphyseal branch is wide and thin. The acetabulum is smaller than in horses. Rim is rounded and usually marked by two notches. One is directed to deep acetabular fossa and and converted to foramen. The other is anteromedial and small also replaced by foramen or absent.

Bones of the animal body makes a skeleton system and helps in locomotion and support soft tissues. The proportion of bones in animal body varies with the animal species as they contribute 12-28 percent in cattle and buffalo, 17-35 percent in sheep and lambs, 50percent in bobby calves, 25 percent in veal calves, 12-20 percent in pigs and 8-17 percent in poultry. As the age advances bones becomes rigid due to ossification of cartilages but in older age bones becomes brittle and fragile due to reduction in bone organic matter.

Bonsai is a Japanese art form using miniature trees grown in containers. The first documented evidence of an oriental word for container planting emerged approximately 1600 years ago in China. Bonsai is a Japanese pronunciation of the earlier Chinese term pen zai. A bon is a tray-like pot typically used in bonsai culture. The purposes of bonsai are primarily contemplation (for the viewer) and the pleasant exercise of effort and ingenuity (for the grower). Bonsai is not intended for production of food, for medicine, or for creating yard-sized or park-sized gardens or landscapes. Instead, bonsai practice focuses on long-term cultivation and shaping of one or more small trees in a single container.

The practice of bonsai is sometimes confused with dwarfing, but dwarfing more accurately refers to research and creation of plant cultivars that are permanent, genetic miniatures of existing species. Bonsai does not require genetically dwarfed trees, but rather depends on growing small trees from regular stock and seeds. Bonsai uses cultivation techniques like pruning, root reduction, potting, defoliation and grafting to produce small trees that mimic the shape and style of mature, full-sized trees.

Bonsai can be created from nearly any perennial woody-stemmed tree or shrub species. Which produces true branches and can be cultivated to remain small through pot Some species are popular as bonsai material because they have characteristics, such as small leaves or needles that make them appropriate for the compact visual scope of bonsai. Bonsai culture is an important branch of Ornamental horticulture. History of Bonsai is very old dating back to many centuries in China where it originated, as most Chinese arts and from there it spread to Japan and became highly specialized.  In fact, bonsai culture is in the present day more known as Japanese than as a Chinese art.  In Japanese homes, there are plants which are hundreds of years old. This treasured art is passed from generation to generation in Japanese society.

The word Bonsai is a combination of two Japanese words, Bon (meaning shallow pan) and Sai (meaning plant) which can be interpreted as ‘Tray planting’.  The idea conveyed is that of a small beautiful tree growing in a container as in nature with all its parts performing their natural functions throughout the times.  The artistic look of plant in a miniature form maintained for many years is the prime criteria.  Bonsais are grown outdoors and are displayed in living room, as and when, needed.  They cannot be treated as house plants.

Bonsai is the art and science of dwarfing plants and growing them in shallow containers. The word ‘Bonsai’ is a Japanese term consisting of two words, ‘Bon‘- a shallow container and ‘sai’ - to plant. Therefore, bonsai is a technique of growing plants (trees, shrubs and others) in shallow containers in dwarf form. With the help of pruning, pinching and training a three dimensional effect is produced. It is a kind of living sculpture and idealized nature in miniature. An ideal bonsai is replica of a particular plant or an artistic variation in shape whose different parts are in complete harmony. Development of bonsai requires an artistic eye, skills on training, pruning and knowledge on growing plants in containers.

This technique was developed by the Chinese over 2000 years ago and later excelled by the Japanese. Bonsai is now popular all over the world and very useful for the people who are living in flats and have no scope to have outdoor gardens. Every house owner likes to have few specimen plants for interior decoration. Bonsai provides them an additional opportunity to grow more number of plants being dwarf in nature. Considering its present popularity, Bonsai is now important horticulturally for its commercial and aesthetic value.

Bonsai is an art of growing and training of a woody plant in a miniature form in a shallow container imitating natural look of an old aged tree. It differs from a pot plant where either the foliage or the flower is the main criterion, but here the artistic look of the tree in a miniature and natural form maintained for many years is desired.

Bonsai is developed from seeds, cuttings, layering or grafting from young trees or from naturally occurring stunted trees transplanted into shallow containers. Most bonsai range in height from 5 centimeter (2 inch) to 1.2 meter (4 ft). Bonsai is kept small and trained by pruning branches and roots, periodic repotting, pinching off new growth and wiring the branches and trunk for giving desired shape. Tradition holds that three basic virtues are necessary to create a bonsai: shin-zen-bi standing for truth, goodness and beauty which are parallel to Hindu concept of Satyam, Shivam, Sundaram. The bonsai must look natural and should never show the intervention of human hands (with the exception of Chinese bonsai which in many cases depicts images of dragons and other influential symbols of the culture at the time of origination). Bonsai is primarily kept outdoors in partial shade with exception of some plants suited, trained and indoor grown. In traditional Japanese rooms, there is a tokonoma, the alcove, specially designed for the display of bonsai on special occasions. Bonsai can live for hundreds of years with utmost care and the prized specimens are being passed from generation to generation, admired for their age and valued as a reminder of those who have cared for them over the centuries.

This art form is derived from an ancient Chinese horticultural practice, part of which was then redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism. Thus, origin of bonsai culture is China. Though it was popularized by Japanese. The ultimate goal of growing a bonsai is to create a miniaturized but realistic representation of nature in the form of a tree. In Japan bonsai is not only a hobby but also act as status symbol.

Bonsai is an astonishing art-form, combining horticultural approaches and Asian aesthetics in a distinct way, which reflects the nature’s beauty (Pietraszko and Sobota 2008). The art of bonsai is considered to be originated in Chinese empire (Doyle et al., 2019) and was later adapted by the Japanese, where it has become the integral part of their culture (Ching 1990, Roth 2014). The word ‘Bonsai’ is derived from two Japanese words ‘Bon’ (Shallow pan) and ‘Sai’(plant) which literally means “planted in a container”. The Chinese started creating miniature landscapes in the form of Bonsai during Han Dynasty over 2000 years ago. During the Kamakura period (700 years ago) the Japanese adopted the bonsai art-form and subsequently a different Japanese style form came into existence. This art of bonsai was further redeveloped under the influence of Japanese Zen Buddhism (Doyle et al. 2019).

A bonsai is a nature’s replication of plant in its miniature form, without depicting the human interference too clearly. Thus, they are normal trees and shrubs which are dwarfed by a specific system of pruning-training-wiring. Techniques such as pinching buds, pruning and wiring branches, and carefully restricting but not abandoning fertilizers are used to limit and redirect healthy growth in bonsai. They are different from the pot plants which are mainly grown for either their foliage or floral beauty, but in case of bonsai the whole artistic look of the plant in its miniature form is maintained for years. Bonsai can be grown both outdoors and indoors, especially they are ideal for display in living rooms, verandas, terraces and window-sills etc. The good bonsai specimens are usually hardy species that can be kept outdoors the year round wherever winters are mild. They can be brought into the house occasionally for appreciation and enjoyment. In Japan, they are customarily displayed in a recess area or on small tables in a living room and later returned to their outdoor bonsai stands.

Introduction

We, the participants of ITAF2023 with Dr. B. R. Chavan and Dr. Prashant Bodake, visited Boonsawang Co. under the guidance of Asst. Prof. Dr. Naphat Panthukumbol and Mr. Suthi Mahalao on 18/10/2023 at 09:00 am. Boonsawang Co. in Chonburi, owned by Suthi Mahalao, also exports fry to Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, and Israel. In addition, Suthi runs his sea bass farm and is a feed distributor to farms in the province. The purpose of the visit was to learn about the seabass culture system and get familiar with technical aspects. The farm occupies an area of 10 hectares and is covered in 11 ponds. The farm is aimed to grow from fry to marketable size seabass. The single crop duration is divided into 4 periods.

Abstract

This chapter will look at the major reasons why farmers in India are unable to take advantage of Agricultural profession as a mode of generating income and suggest ways to change this by employing new technologies. Agriculture has basic processes which require identifying the season for planting the seeds at the right time, watering the plants to the required level, undertaking maintenance for the different plants and then finally harvesting at the right time to ensure that the effort that has been put into the agricultural process results in useful output. In business terms the output when it is valued in terms of money, should enable the farming business to sell their output at a certain price that will enable them to pay off the money that has been used for setting up the crop for that cycle. This chapter will underscore the valuable contribution of remote sensing data in farming to enhance operational decisions. We will look at how low-cost technologies can be implemented into the existing agricultural extension activities and help farmers make better decisions that will enable them to be more business oriented. It is envisaged that incorporating high technology-based data into simple to understand terminology willhelp reduce the burden on farmers. This is due to the lack of knowledge but also due to the low volume of information that is possible to be fed to the farmers through the agriculture extension network in the country. However, due to the varied nature of farming in India it is difficult for extension officers to specialise but concentrate their efforts on widely utilised crops in an area. The following figure below explains in simple terms how the cycle of activities occur in a farmer’s world and where business decisions are taken that will have an impact on the profitability.

B. avium and B. bronchiseptica are motile by peritricholls flagella but B. pertussis and B. parapertussis are non-motile. All are catalase-positive and oxidase-positive. B. bronchiseptica and B. aium willgrow on MacConkey agar.
The genus Bordetella contains four species, B.pertussis, B.parapertussis, B. bronchiseptica and B. avium. Bordetella pertussis, the type species, and B.parapertussis are human pathogens associated with whooping cough in children. Bordetella bronchiseptica infects a wide range of animal species including man, while B.avium is a pathogen of avian species. The bordetellae are occasional pathogens which have an affinity for ciliated respiratory epithelium.
Bordetella bronchiseptica and B.avium are small (0.2 to 0.5 x 0.5 to 1.5 pm), Gramnegative rods with a coccobacillary appearance. They are catalasepositive, oxidase-positive aerobes and are motile peritrichous bacteria. Because they cannot utilize carbohydrates, they derive their energy mainly from the oxidation of amino acids and have no special growth requirements. They grow on MacConkey agar.
Natural Habitat
The bordetellae are inhabitants primarily of the upper respiratory tract of healthy and diseased humans, animals and birds. B. pertussis and B. parapertussis are human pathogens causing whooping cough and a mild form of whooping cough, respectively. B. bronchiseptica can be present in the upper respiratory tract of pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea-pigs, rats, horses and possibly other animals. B. avium inhabits the respiratory tract of infected poultry, principally turkeys. Mammalian infections are mainly transmitted by aerosols but in turkeys indirect spread can occur via water and litter.

Boron (B) de?ciency has been realized as the second most important micronutrient constraint in crop production after that of Zn in the world (Ahmed et al., 2012). However, in Nepal, B de?ciency is more wide-spread than Zn de?ciency, as 80 to 90% of soil samples were de?cient in B, 20 to 50% in Zn and 10 to 15% in Mo (Anderson, 2007). In India, B de?ciency has increased from 2% of the soil samples de?cient in B in 1980s (Katyal and Vlek, 1995) to 52% soil samples in 2000s (Singh, 2012). Total B content in Indian soils varies from 7 to 630 mg kg^–1 soil (Kanwar, 1976); being the highest in arid regions of the country and the lowest in wet humid regions of the country (Behera et al., 2009; Prasad et al., 2014). Boron de?ciency is most in the heavy rainfall areas of Western Ghats of Maharashtra, Karnataka and the eastern states of Bihar, Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh states of India (Fig.13.1). The wide-spread de?ciency of B in India can be seen from the fact that B fertilization recorded the highest bene?t : cost (B : C) ratio in rice–wheat cropping system at Palampur (Himachal Pradesh), Ludhiana (Punjab), Faizabad, Modipuram and Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh), Pantnagar (Uttarakhand) and in rice–rice cropping system at Maruteru (Andhra Pradesh), Karjat (Maharashtra) and Jorhat (Asom) (Singh and Goswami, 2014). Response of wheat to B fertilization is also reported from Bangladesh (Halder et al, 2007).

Borreliae, which are longer and wider than other spirochaetes, have a similar helical shape. In addition to a linear chromosome, which is unique among bacteria, borreliae possess linear and circular plasmids. Although these spirochaetes can cause disease in animals and humans, subclinical infections are also common. Borreliae are transmitted by arthropod vectors.
Usual Habitat
Borreliae are obligate parasites in a variety of vertebrate hosts. Although these organisms persist in the environment for short periods, they depend on vertebrate reservoir hosts and arthropod vectors for long-term survival.
Differentiation of Borrelia Species
Borreliae can be differentiated from other spirochaetes by their morphology, by the low guanine and cytosine content of their genomic DNA and by ecological, cultural and biochemical characteristics. Identification of Borrelia species depends mainly on genetic analysis. At least nine genospecies or genomic groups of B.burgdorferi sensulato, have been identified using DNA-DNA hybridization, 16s rRNA sequencing and other molecular techniques.
Clinical Infections
The species of particular veterinary importance are B. burgdorferi sensu lato, the cause of Lyme disease in animals and humans, and B. anserina which causes avian borreliosis. The significance of two other species, B.theileri andB.coriaceae, as animal pathogens, is uncertain.
Lyme Disease
This condition, also known as Lyme borreliosis, was first identified in 1975 following investigation of a cluster of arthritis cases in children near the town of Old Lyme, Connecticut. The causative agent, a spirochaete, was named Borrelia burgdorferi.

ABSTRACT

Boswellia serrata Roxb. ex Colebr. known as ’Indian Frankincense’ is a multiferous medicinal plants known for boswellic acid and it has application in traditional ayurvedic formulation. The plant possess anti-rheumatic, anti-pyretic, anti-cancerous, anti-inflammatory, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-coronary, analgesic and hepatoprotective properties due to the presence of several loaded bioactive compounds such as α-amyrins, β-boswellic acid, acetyl-β-boswellic acid, 11-ketoβ-boswellic acid, acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid, tetracyclic triterpenoic acids and several others in minor quantities in different parts of plants. Mostly oleo-gum resin is usually used in Indian system of medicine, and acetyl-11-keto-β-boswellic acid (AKBA) is the most potent 5-lipoxygenase enzyme inhibitor responsible for inflammation, anti-cancer (G1 phase arrest) and other group of enzymes liable for allied activities. Besides, it yields essential oils and its major constituents are monoterpenoids such as pinene (2.05-64.7%), cisverbenol (1.97%), trans-pinocarveol (1.80%), borneol (1.78%), myrcene (1.71%), verbenone (1.71%), limonene (1.42%), thuja-2,4(10)-diene (1.18%) and p-cymene (1.0%). The copaene is the only sesquiterpene reported in minor quantities from essential oils of this species. Its essential show different actvities in relation to anti-cancer and antiinflammatory. From future perspectives, there is a need to carry out more research on its constituents for the development of value added products and drugs. Investigation on ecology and application of biotechnological intervention would helps in varities improvememnt, cultivation and conservation of this species.

In previous Chapter, a list was furnished mentioning common names, botanical names, family and types of the all plants mentioned in the Ramayana. The purpose was to know the total number of plants and trees mentioned besides providing reference of the Shlokas as well. This information led to identification of the plants and trees but details about their morphological and floral characters were not mentioned. Therefore, in this Chapter details of the trees and other plants have been provided. This will help to know all about their botanical standing, conservation status, nativity, morphological and floral characters so that one can know the full details including present-day status, availability and importance (Cowen, 1950; Randhawa, 1983; Roy, 2015; 2024).

Morphological and Floral Characters: Red Bead Tree is a timber tree found wild in India. Leaves compound, bipinnate, green when young, turning yellow on maturity. Flowers small, yellowish, grows in a dense, drooping almost cat tail like flower-heads. Fruits curved pods, hanging, green that turn brown, coil up and split open on ripening, showing small bright red seeds which are attractive, used as beads in jewellery.

Maize is a tall, determinate annual C₄ plant varying in height from (1-4) meters producing large, narrow, opposing leaves (about a tenth as wide as they are long), borne alternately along the length of a solid stem. The botanical features of various plant parts are as follows: 

Root

Root system of maize consists of seminal roots, crown or coronal or adventitious or fibrous roots and brace, pop or aerial roots. Seminal roots - which develop from radical and persist for long period. Crown roots developing from the lower nodes of stem below ground level which are the effective and active roots of plant and.  Brace or prop roots, produced by lower two nodes. The roots grow very rapidly and almost equally outwards and downwards. Favorable soils may allow corn root growth up to 60 cm laterally and in depth.

12.1 What are Botanical Gardens?
Botanical gardens are the institutions that maintain the living plant collections of different varieties of plants, including the ornamental and cultivated ones, wild, medicinal, of economic importance, of various geographical regions, of special interest, etc. They are of value not only to the botanists, horticulturists and foresters but also to the millions of tourists
A big botanical garden contains plant species from several corners of the globe. It also includes green houses, a library, a herbarium, research laboratories, and several miscellaneous resources including photographs, paintings, illustrations, reprints, note books, and specimens of several types. It is, therefore, not merely a garden but a botanical institution.
Modern botanical gardens serve as centres for documentation, research, reference, data storage, education, conservation, and several other biological facilities to mankind.At present, there are over 600 botanical gardens in the world.

Pyrethrum is the most widely used botanical insecticide. The active ingredient, pyrethrin, is extracted from a chrysanthemum plant, grown primarily in Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Ecuador. Pyrethrum is the powdered, dried flower head of the pyrethrum daisy, Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium.

A botanical and horticultural library is a library specializing in the preservation and collection of literature and materials about plants. Botanical libraries are like special libraries are specialized information resources tailored to the unique needs of a particular organization, profession, or subject area. A botanical library is a specialized resource center dedicated to the study of plants and plant science. It typically houses a vast collection of books, journals, and other materials related to botany, horticulture, plant biology, and related fields. The mission of many botanical and horticultural libraries is to make accessible and available to those who use it the information on this topic. Abstract

Higher plants can be exploited for the discovery of new bioactive products that could serve as lead compounds in pesticide development because of their novel modes-of-action. Different secondary metabolites of higher plants have been reported to exhibit efficacy as fungitoxicants as well as mycotoxin inhibitors. Pest controls using the botanicals are safer to the user and the environment because they break down into harmless compounds within hours or days in the presence of sunlight. The article presents different plant products found efficacious as antimicrobial and inhibitory to mycotoxin secretions by fungi. Their prospect as safe alternatives to synthetic antimicrobials in plant protection has been discussed.

Botanicals

Botanicals play a significant role in the development of a disease management approach that is both ecologically sound and acceptable to the environment. Plant products have been found to have fungicidal, bactericidal, and antiviral properties. It is known that 346 plant species have fungicidal, 92 have bactericidal, and 90 have antiviral properties. This proves conclusively that the plant kingdom is home to a sizable stockpile of chemicals that can control a range of plant diseases. Because many of them employ many modes of action and plant compounds are safer for species other than the targeted, there is also less chance of resistance developing.Plants and plant products known as botanicals are safer for protecting plants against pathogens.

1. Bread Wheat (Triticum aestivum)

Wheat has been traditionally grouped into the genera Triticum in the tribe Tritiaceae of the family Poaceae. Bread wheat, 2n=6x=42 is a hexaploid consisting of three distinct genomic complementary, namely, A, B and D, with the genome structure AABBDD. In the past there were 4 species, viz. Triticum aestivum, T. durum, T. dicoccum and T. sphaerococcum, under cultivation in India. T. sphaerococcum has now practically gone out of cultivation because of its low productivity and high susceptibility to diseases. The major wheat producing countries are China, India, USA, the Russian Federation, and Australia. These five countries together contribute more than half of the global wheat production. In India, Uttar Pradesh has registered the highest production followed by Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Bihar. These top six states together contributed around 90 per cent of the total wheat production in the country

Floral Biology

The inflorescence of wheat is known as spikelets. Spikelets are alternately arranged on the rachis; each spikelet’s has a small joint axis which bear two to nine flower known as florets. Close to the base of rachilla are two empty boat shaped bracts known as glumes. Above these inserted alternately on opposite side of the rachilla known as lemma. Opposite it’s a thin membrane bracts known as palea enclosed within the lemma and palea are a single pistil and three steamens. The pistil consists of an ovary bearing two short styles each carrying a feathery stigma. At the base of the ovary are two membranous scales known as lodicules. Each stamen consists of a thread like filament carrying a pollen containing anther.

Plant biodiversity, in particular, is arguably the single greatest resource that humankind has garnered from nature during our long cultural development. Nowhere is the value of biodiversity more evident than in our food supply. Roughly one third of all plant species have edible fruits, tubers, nuts, seeds, leaves, roots, or stems. The World Health Organization estimates that 3.5 billion people in developing countries rely on plant-based medicine for their primary health care, in which tuber crops also play a major role (Tuxill, 1999). There are 25 hot spots of biodiversity of which Western Ghats and Eastern Himalayan are the most important ones in India. About 7% of world flora and 6.5% of world fauna are in India. Indo-Burma region is one of the eight hottest hot spots of the world, and is the centre of origin of tuber crops like Dioscorea, Colocasia, Amorphophallus and Alocasia.

Onion is an economically significant bulb crop cultivated across diverse agroecological environments. Its cultivars vary considerably in bulb size, shape, colour, pungency, maturity, storage behaviour and photoperiod response. Understanding its vegetative and reproductive morphology, growth habit, physiology and taxonomic relationships is fundamental to crop improvement and germplasm conservation. This chapter examines the botanical features and taxonomic position of onion within the genus Allium. It explains relationships among cultivated types, landraces and allied species and discusses varietal classification according to climatic adaptation and consumer preference. Classical characterization and molecular taxonomy are considered important tools for developing productive, resilient and market-preferred onion cultivars.

Botany: Bottle gourds belonging to the family cucurbitaceae is an annual vine having white flowers and smooth, large, hard-shelled gourds. Brownish seeds are numerous in a whitish green pulp. Each seed is somewhat rectangular in shape with grooved notches near the attached end. Grown most often in warmer climates, this squash grows from 6 to 36 inches long and 3 to 12 inches in diameter.

Seeds leaves, flowers and young stems are all edible. Helpful in shedding extra calories. It contains higher concentrations of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Vitamin K, Vitamin B6, Folate, Potassium, Manganese, Protein, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Pantothenic Acid, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus and Selenium. A rich source of minerals and vitamins, bottle gourds contains many healing and medicinal properties. The cooked vegetable is not only easy to digest but also contains cooling, calming (or sedative), diuretic properties. It contains low calories also has iron, Vitamin C and B complex. Regular consumption of this vegetable provides relief to people suffering with digestive problems, diabetics and convalescents.

Bottle gourd (Lageneria siceraria) 2n=2x=22 is also known as white flowered gourd. Most important vegetable of ancient China.
 
Origin : According to De Candolle (1882) Bottle gourd has been found in wild form in South Africa and India. However, Cutler and Whitaker (1962) are of the view that probably it is indigenous to Tropical Africa on the basis of variability in seeds and fruits. This species appear to have been domesticated independently in Asia, Africa and the New world (Heiser, 1973).
 
Botany: It is monoecious, annual vine with soft pubescence. Leaves are cordate ovate to reniform-ovate, Flowers are white, solitary, open at night and has hairy ovary. Fruit shape is cylindrical, oval egg shaped, club shaped, round and other shapes also appeared.

Genetics of Important Traits

Bitterness: Single dominant gene (Path and Singh, 1950)

Fruit colour: Monogenically controlled (Kalloo, 1993)

Two major genes are involved for fruit shape (Path and Singh, 1950). Single gene for fruit colour involved (patchy v/s white) and reported by Path and Singh (1950). Monogenic recessive inheritance for andromonoecious sex form is reported by Singh et al. (1996). Hermaphrodite sex form is characterized by long corolla (3.5-4.5cm instead of 2.5-3.5cm in normal). In hermaphrodite condition fruits bears prominent blossom scar.  Long fruit conditioned by AA genotype and Round fruit is due to aa genotype where Partial dominance is reported (Kushwaha, 1996).

Bottle gourd (Lagenaria siceraria, 2n = 2x = 22, family Cucurbitaceae, monoecious, cross-pollinated but genetically behaving like self-pollinated crop), is grown primarily in India on large scale for consumption as cooked vegetables. Bottle gourd is considered to be one of the earliest species of plants to be domesticated by humans. Bottle gourds are regularly grown and consumed in various parts of the world, particularly Asia. Fruits of bottle gourds are harvested young and used as a vegetable. The mature, dried fruits have been used throughout the world for making storage jars and utensils and hence the name bottle gourd. Shoots and leaves are also cooked and eaten. Lately, bottle gourd juice is also becoming popular in India as a health drink. Other countries growing bottle gourd on limited scale are Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Philippines, China, Hong Kong, Tropical Africa, Colombia and Brazil. After seed scooping, the hard rind is used as containers also. Seeds are used for oil extraction and oil is used as cooking oil.

During 2017-18, India produced 27 lakh tons (2.7 million tons) of bottle ground from 1.60 lakh ha (0.16 million ha) and this translated into a productivity of 17 tons/ ha (Horticulture Statistics at a Glance-2018, MAFW, 2018). Top six states producing bottle gourd on significant scale are Bihar, UP, Haryana, MP, Odisha, and Pujab, production being in the range of 135,000 to 650,000 tons.

Bottle gourd, Lagenaria siceraria under the family Cucurbitaceae (Chromosome No: 2n = 2× = 22) is commonly grown vegetable crop of India, Africa, Central America and other warmer regions of the world. Tender fruits are widely used as cooked vegetables in a number of ways. Bottle gourd is a good source of vitamin C and zinc that may offer several skin benefits. It also contains minerals like calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc. Its dietary fibre enhances gastro-intestinal health and promotes bowel movements and prevents constipation.
Origin, domestication and adaptation in India
It is the only crop known to have been cultivated in pre-Columbian times in both the Old and New World. Bottle gourd is indigenous to the tropical Africa. It has
bihemispheric distribution in Africa, the old world and America, the new World. Its utilization by man is about 16,000 years in the Old World and 12,000 years in the New World. It was independently domesticated in the two hemispheres. It was one of the world’s first cultivated plants grown not primarily for food, but for the use of hardshelled fruit as containers. The apparent wild plant produces thinner-walled fruit that, when dried, would not endure the rigors of use on long journeys as a water container. Today’s bottle gourd may owe it’s tough, waterproof wall to selection pressures over its long history of domestication. The bottle gourd was theorized to have drifted across the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to South America.

Abstract

Formulation  of  any  action  plan for women needs understanding of their  access  to  and  control over the resources. To have deep  insight into  this  aspect, a study  was  undertaken with 240  small  and  marginal  farm  women  randomly  selected  from  eight  villages  of  four districts  in  Andhra Pradesh  in  consultation  with  officials of agriculture department. Using an interview schedule, impediments  for development  of  farm  women  (social, economic, psychological, extension and technical)  were  collected  and  prioritized  through  matrix ranking.
To  overcome  social  and  economic  constraints, gender  mainstreaming  and  budgeting  are  now recognized as the most important strategies  for  women’s empowerment at all stages of any developmental  programmes. Such an approach necessarily aims at achievement  of  gender equality. Organizing capacity building programmes in managerial, entrepreneurial, negotiating and leadership skills improves risk taking  ability (psychological) and enhances active participation of farm women in developmental activities.

As mentioned above Bougainvillea is one of the most widely grown important perennial ornamental shrubs with numerous attractive plant colour (leaf) and shape, and bract colours and shape. It is very popular for its multipurpose use. Inspite of beautiful bract colour it can not be enjoyed as cut flower as its shelf-life is very limited. Bracts start drooping within few minutes after cut from the main plant. Dehydration techniques have been developed at CSIR-N.B.R.I., Lucknow, by which flowers and foliage retain their fresh look for several months or even years after dehydration. Their original shapes, colour and size remain as they were before dehydration and, thus, making them highly suitable raw materials for interior decoration and may be enjoyed for a long time and can be used for any occasion. NBRI has standardized two methods viz. Press Drying and Embedding (drying through embedding in sand and silica gel and drying using hot air oven, microwave oven and solar cooker). Bougainvillea leaves and bracts can be dehydrated beautifully by both the methods and the dried products are utilized for preparation of different types of commercial decorative items.
