Certification and adherence to quality standards are essential for ensuring the authenticity, safety, and marketability of natural bee products such as honey, beeswax, propolis, royal jelly, and pollen. These standards are especially important in the expanding natural and organic product sectors, where consumer trust and product integrity are critical. Certification validates that bee products are produced using specific methods aligned with natural or organic farming principles—free from synthetic chemicals, pesticides, and artificial additives.

Certified natural bee products often command higher prices and gain access to premium domestic and international markets. Key quality parameters include moisture content, sugar composition, absence of adulterants, pesticide residues, and microbiological safety. Regulatory authorities such as the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) conduct assessments and enforce compliance with these criteria. For instance, honey is evaluated for HMF levels, diastase activity, and pollen count, while beeswax and propolis are tested for chemical contaminants.

Certification not only promotes sustainable and ethical beekeeping practices but also supports biodiversity conservation and traceable trade systems. Consumers benefit through guaranteed product safety and health advantages, while producers gain market credibility and economic incentives. However, small-scale beekeepers often face obstacles such as high certification costs and complex documentation. Supportive measures like training, capacity-building, and technological innovations— such as blockchain for traceability—can help expand certification accessibility and improve transparency throughout the value chain.

Need for certification

Forest restoration and reforestation experts know the effect the right seed source can have on the long-term economic and ecological success of tree planting efforts. However, unlike stock quality (such as size and health), genetic quality (seed source) cannot be observed by the consumer at the time of stock purchase. Where once the provincial government controlled the source of seed and its destination through the provincial nursery system, seed supply is now in the private sector, and the source is unknown or a matter of trust. Tree planting in general needs help, and the wrong seed source is only one of the many reasons that your planting project may not be successful. Besides, the identity of the source will be tracked throughout the chain of custody until it is presented, as a labeled, certified product to the consumer. The seed source may be from a single parent tree or preferably from a large healthy stand of trees. But if seed is bulked from many locations, the label on the resulting seedlings can only indicate the greater area. For example if a nursery bulked its seed from many counties across a specific place, they can only certify and market that crop as? specific place? not as one from a specific county that may have been a source for the seed. For this reason we will have to encourage collectors and growers to bulk only by tree seed zones to promote certification program for the context of successful tree planting.

Natural farming in India is increasingly being recognized not just for its ecological integrity but also for its potential to enhance farmer incomes through systematic certification, innovative marketing, and value-added processing. Together, these elements form a vital support framework for scaling natural farming as a sustainable livelihood model.
While natural farming is rooted in chemical-free traditional practices, certification mechanisms like the Participatory Guarantee System (PGS) and thirdparty organic certifications provide formal recognition. These certifications— backed by government agencies and NGOs—enhance credibility, assure consumers of product authenticity, and allow farmers to label their produce as
natural or organic. This certification enables access to niche, premium markets where consumers are willing to pay more for sustainable and safe food options.
Marketing remains a key challenge but also a promising frontier. Traditional supply chains often fail to acknowledge the ecological value of natural produce. Direct-to-consumer sales, farmers’ markets, and online platforms like Jaivik Kheti are bridging this gap, offering better price realization. Farmer Producer Organizations (FPOs) further strengthen the position of natural farmers by enabling bulk marketing, logistics management, and improved price negotiation.
Value addition transforms raw produce into market-ready goods such as  pickles, flours, oils, and herbal teas, significantly enhancing profitability. These products appeal to health-conscious consumers and often command premium prices. Many on-farm processing units are run by rural women’s self-help groups, thereby creating jobs and empowering local communities.

Poultry sector is expected to play the most crucial role in transforming the nutritional demography of country with ever growing share of protein based cheap human diets. Some of the specific challenges the poultry sector is faced with are as follows:
a) Regional imbalances in poultry production
The commercial layer farming is yet to make a dent in some of the region of country. However, broiler farming is gradually catching up in majority region.
b) Underexploited poultry diversity
Among poultry species, chicken production has already acquired large scale commercial dimensions in some states due to its better efficiency. However, there is a scope for exploitation of other domesticated poultry species.
c) Rising feed cost
The growth in poultry has outpaced the growth in cereal production leading to severe feed shortages and consequent rise in feed cost. Cereal by-products and oilseed residues usually constitute more than 80 percent of poultry diet. Coarse cereals also form the staple diet of millions of marginal farmers and landless labourers. These coarse cereals are the most important and most widely used poultry feed ingredients all over the world. The demand for coarse cereals is continuously increasing at 4 percent per year due to ever increasing population and their use in livestock rations.

India has a wide agroclimatic range i.e. temperate, subtropical and tropical, enabling to achieve horticulture diversification. India is second in fruit and vegetable production at global level. The percentage share of horticulture output in agriculture has become 33%, (Horti statistics, 2018). However, productivity in most of the horticulture commodities is very low below world productivity, as we have not concentrated intensively on some major aspects to achieve competitiveness in horticulture for expansion in international trade.

India has potential to lead the world in horticulture. Horticulture is mostly concerned in different aspects of human beings such as provision of nutritious food to achieve a balanced diet; rural employment, integral part of rainfed and dry land areas, wealth generation through the activities of production, processing, marketing, servicing, and related sectors, economically important in export related activities and associated with all the elements of the supply chain etc. 

10.1. Challenges and Opportunities in SMEs

The Nigerian transport system faces great challenges and also offers several opportunities. The predisposing factors include:

• The size of the country: With area coverage of 923,768.64 km2, spanning longitude 30E-160E and latitude 40N-140N Nigeria is a comparatively large country. It is inhabited by over 140 million people. Transportation is a crucial instrument for linking the country economically, socially and politically.

• Nigeria’s vast natural resources: Nigeria is endowed with petroleum, gas and solid mineral resources. The country is also blessed with abundant agricultural and forest resources, which vary by the three ecological zones of the country. The country is endowed with a highly productive open sea with abundant and diverse marine resources within her coastline of 852km bordering the Atlantic Ocean in the Gulf of Guinea and her maritime area of 46,000 km. This variation is a factor in spatial interdependence. Transport plays an important role in the exploitation and distribution of these resources and in the reduction of spatial inequality and in poverty alleviation.

During the last 50 years or so, the world has witnessed tremendous changes in terms of population exodus, accessibility to food, advancement in agricultural science and technology, increased food production, efforts in mitigating food and nutrition security, natural and human made disasters and developmental efforts in handling and containing national and global issues. Inspite of these efforts, the challenges which have cropped up are plenty and at the same time creating avenues of opportunities to address those challenges in the interest of humanity. The world is large, countries are many, agro- climatic regions vary significantly, socio-economic conditions are distinct and the national, regional and global issues vary greatly. For ease of presentation and convenience of illustration, common issues only will be dealt in this chapter. Keeping in view the theme of this book, the following topics/issues will be discussed which pose challenges for the living humanity and for future generation within next 50 years. The views are limited to developmental, planning and implementation processes only in order for governments and others to consider overcoming these challenges.

18.1 Introduction

The development of successful plans and policies requires an awareness of the following issues.

18.1.1 Heterogeneity of Rural Areas

Rural landscapes are diverse, exhibiting variations in geography, culture, and economic activities. Addressing the unique needs of different regions requires a modulation approach (Cloke & Milbourne, 1992). Different topographies, such as hills and plains, have an effect on farming practices. Economic heterogeneity results from the use of various farming techniques and the presence of various sectors. Socially, these locations are characterised by diverse ethnic groups with a diversity of cultures. Access to healthcare and education is restricted by inequalities in infrastructure and services, which add to the uneven development.

Introduction
Liposomal drug delivery methods have received a lot of interest in the pharmaceutical industry because of their capacity to improve therapeutic efficacy while also reducing toxicity of encapsulated pharmaceuticals. Liposomes, which are spherical vesicles made up of lipid bilayers, provide targeted delivery of drugs, increased bioavailability, and controlled release of therapeutics (Gupta et al., 2023; Rana et al., 2023; Salave et al., 2023, 2024). However, guaranteeing the sterility of liposomal formulations is critical for their safety and efficacy, particularly in parenteral applications.
Sterilization is a validated process that achieves a microorganism-free product without altering its properties. In the pharmaceutical industry, a sterilization process is deemed valid when it successfully attains the necessary Sterility Assurance Level (SAL) of 10-6. The SAL represents the likelihood of contamination occurring after the sterilization process for a product with an initial biological load of 106 colonyforming units (Woedtke et al., 2008). The biological indicator used in this case is one of three bacterial species: Geobacillus stearothermophilus, Bacillus pumilus, or B. atrophaeus (Mcevoy et al., 2023). Accordingly, a product may be deemed “sterile” if the likelihood of a viable microorganism being present is equal to or less than 106. Liposomal formulations provide particular issues for sterilization due to their fragile nature and the physicochemical features of the encapsulated drugs. Sterilization plays a vital role in the production of liposomal formulations for parenteral administration. It is crucial to remove all viable microorganisms to prevent infections, maintain the effectiveness of therapeutic agents, and ensure patient safety. The delicate nature of liposomal carriers presents unique challenges in the sterilization process (Lombardo et al., 2022 a).
Traditional sterilization methods, such as autoclaving, dry heat, and chemical sterilization, are frequently not suitable for liposomal structures (Figure 1). The application of these techniques can lead to the breakdown of lipids, changes in phase, or destabilization of the drug contained within the formulation, resulting in a decrease in its therapeutic effectiveness (Zuidam et al., 1993 a). In addition, the physicochemical properties of liposomes, such as their size, lamellarity, and lipid composition, play a crucial role in determining their stability and how they react to sterilization methods.
Considering these limitations, the pharmaceutical industry has investigated alternative methods of sterilization that guarantee the elimination of microorganisms while preserving the integrity of liposomes. A commonly used method for sterilizing liposomal formulations is filtration through sterile membrane filters with pore sizes of 0.2 micrometers (Goldbach et al., 1995 a). This

13.1 Challenges in the technology transfer process
Technology transfer (TT) is more complex and involves the complex interrelationships between universities, research institutes, the private sector, the state, and society. Though TT is all about translating research findings into purposeful solutions that can support the economy and society, it is not a linear process. The challenges can be described as legal, institutional, cultural, financial, policy, and human resource. All this is accompanied by bottlenecks that inhibit or decelerate the diffusion of promising technologies.
13.1.1 Legal and intellectual property challenges
The vital component of technology transfer is the proper management of intellectual property (IP), which is often the most challenging aspect.
• Ambiguities in IP ownership: During multi-institutional or shared funder research, ownership is quite controversial. As an example, when a government lab and a university collaborate on the project, there is ambiguity as to who would have the ultimate licensing authority over the technology: the university, the lab, or the funding agency. This kind of fight hinders commercialisation and scares off industry partners.
• Lengthy patent filing and prosecution timelines: In several jurisdictions, the filings, examination, and granting of a patent may take between three and five years or more. Such delay is not compatible with the rapid cycle of invention in other fields such as ICT or biotechnology, where patent claims may become invalid before they are granted.
• High costs of IP protection: International direct patenting, like under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT), is costly and involves legal services, fees, and upkeep costs. These costs are excessively high, which cannot be easily compensated by universities and startups, and where technologies are not secured or limited to local markets.

Definitions: Before starting the chapter, it is better to understand the basic definitions of the terms commonly used in this chapter.

Waste: Waste is any material or object which is discarded after its primary use by its holder. A holder means the person who produces and keeps the waste. 

Abstract

India today has 1.30 billion people and would be the world’s most populous country by 2025. The challenge is how to feed India’s growing population with rising income, but limited land and water resources. Whereas area under crop cultivation has come down from 142 million ha to 138 million ha, asking for protecting the arable lands from mass urbanization and more productivity per unit area. The agricultural production systems are still operating at low productivity and high uncertainty in the country. There is little or no alignment between production, the growth of agricultural commodities in the market and the supply of these commodities. All this leading to considerable farm produce wastage, mounting tremendous pressure on natural resources and would pose a challenge to the country in providing food, water, health, shelter, sanitation and jobs to all.

While industry and services have grown, agricultural sector has lagged behind. Information technology sector is growing consistently at 30 per cent every year but agriculture has not even achieved 4 per cent growth. The contribution of agricultural sector to national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) has continued to decline over the years; has shrunk from 55 per cent in 1951-52 to 14.6 per cent in 2015-16. Land fragmentation, reducing holding size, obscure marketing prospects, low water and inputs use efficiencies, modest level of mechanization, unorganization, unreliable returns from rainfed areas, inadequate storage infrastructure, weak processing sector and meagre investments continue to leave visible impressions on Indian agriculture. Nonetheless, agriculture remains a major source of employment, absorbing about 52 per cent of the total national workforce. Higher levels of investments in agriculture, both by the public and private sector can yield much better results if the reforms are undertaken to streamline not only the incentive structures for the farmers, but also the institutional framework to address the issues of integration, export orientation, infrastructure development, and information technology and management to achieve the objective of a innovative agricultural sector capable of providing food security to all. Farmer insecurity about crop failure also prevents them from adopting changes. A balance between risk and reward is considered to be an important economic factor for enhancing relationships. Trust among channel partners, power share and interdependence are other important factors for enhancing relationships in the supply chain system.

ABSTRACT

Dairy farming plays a significant role in rural economy. It provides more avenues for increasing rural incomes and sustaining livelihood. Milk and other dairy products are a major source of protein and calcium for vast vegetarian population of India and demand is likely to double within a decade. Many of the educated youth in rural areas are going back to dairy farming as a natural choice with passion, getting involved deeply, continuously learning and innovating in the process. However these young and intuitive farmers face many challenges especially with regard to technical input and availability of green fodder round the year. In order to address these problems, this study was conducted in Muktsar district of Punjab. The young farmers selected belong to age group ranging from 24-35 years. Seventy percent of the respondents were graduates, among them 25 percent being technocrats. About 65 percent had medium family size (5 members). Eighty five percent of respondents had small land holding ranging from 5-8 acres. For majority of the respondents’ dairy was the primary occupation. Sixty percent of the respondents had obtained 45 day artificial insemination (AI) training from Dairy Development Board, Punjab and themselves did AI on their farm. Many (75 percent) had herd size of 35-40 animals. Majority of the farmers had hired labour for milking and daily care of animals with family members involved in management of the farm. Most of them (65 percent) believed in preparing their own silage and breed improvement. The study revealed that many educated youth in dairy farming were of progressive and scientific temper with entrepreneurship potential but were facing many impediments like low milk yield (4.5 – 6.5 kg/ animal/day), poor breed up gradation, green fodder shortage, a large number of services per conception (3 in majority cases) with artificial insemination (AI), low competence of veterinary service providers in remote rural areas in addition to high veterinary costs, difficulty in marketing milk from crossbred dairy cows due to low preference. It was felt that if sincere and sustained efforts were made by all the stakeholders involved, dairy farming had the potential for all round socio-economic development of rural areas.

Introduction

India has one of the world’s largest agricultural production areas of land. The net sown area is 140.1 million hectares, the net irrigated area is 49% of this, which is 68.4 million ha as per 2014–15 land-use statistics (Agriculture Research Data Book 2019). While the proportion of Indians employed in agriculture is decreasing, agriculture, along with its allied sectors such as livestock, forestry and fisheries, remains India’s primary source of income. As per the Lok Sabha Standing Committee on Agriculture (2019–20), agriculture and allied industries employed 54.6 percent of India’s total workforce. Approximately 70% of rural households still rely primarily on agriculture for a living. Agriculture and allied sectors’ share of the country’s Gross Value Added (the value of goods and services produced in an area, industry, or sector of an economy) has fallen from 18.2 percent in 2014-15 to 16.5 percent in 2019-20. As per current trends, 60% of India’s population (more than 10% of the world’s population) will face severe food shortages by 2050.

ABSTRACT

Agriculture and allied sectors is the largest livelihood providers in rural India, still Indian farmers are among the poorest in the World. Agriculture sector is potentially largest employment providing sectors in the country. Despite this, unemployment is high among educated rural youth, and they prefer to migrate to urban areas to take up low paying jobs. The present study was carried out mainly to find out the challenges faced by rural youth in choice of agriculture as a means of livelihood. The study was conducted in four villages in Udham Singh Nagar district in Uttarakhand. Data was collected from 115 youth using pre-tested interview schedule. It was found that maximum number of respondents had education up to higher secondary level, majority were students and had medium level of mass media exposure and change proneness. The study indicates that limited access to new agricultural technologies, limited access to farm machinery, perception regarding suitability to agriculture, damage of crops from pests and insects, and lack of information on agricultural inputs and government policies were the main challenges faced by rural youth in choosing agriculture as a means of livelihood. The study indicates that government has developed policy framework for involving youth in agriculture. This study can be carried on training needs of youth in agriculture and allied sectors.

1. Introduction

India is a land of great diversities in terms of people, culture, languages and the style of living, among many other varied characteristics in the country. Based on the climatic, geographical, and cultural features, the country is broadly divided into six zones - the Northern, Southern, Eastern, Western zone, Central and the North-Eastern zone. Eastern zone comprises Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Assam and eastern UP (27districts of UP). This document exclusively focuses on the four states namely Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha and West Bengal in the Eastern Zone with an attempt to look into the bottlenecks inhibiting the rural development of the zone.The f inancial institutions for agriculture in India was developed with the purpose of financing the needy farmers and providing them the facilities to increase the efficiency of agriculture. As a result, NABARD was formed in 1982. Thus, it was developed as an apex bank to help and support the agriculture section in India.This chapter seeks to evaluate the role of various financial institutions which play a major role in raising the standard of living of nearly one-fourth of India’s population in the eastern region of our vast country.

Dryland agriculture limits the crop growth to a part of the year due to lack of sufficient moisture (Peterson et al., 2006). According to the Fourth five-year plan of India, dry lands are defined as areas which receive rainfall ranging from 375 mm to 1125 mm and with very limited irrigation facilities. Dry lands are economically fragile regions which are highly vulnerable to environmental stress and shocks. Degraded soils with low water holding capacities along with multiple nutrient deficiencies and depleting ground water table contribute to low crop yields and further leading to land degradation. In a country like India, 44 per cent of the total food production is supported by dryland agriculture, thereby playing a critical role in nation’s food security. With the increasing population, food production has to be increased. A real need to second green revolution has been envisioned, which can be achieved by improving the dryland agriculture.

Introduction
The accurate identification of crop varieties is crucial for agriculture, plant breeding, and intellectual property protection. DNA-based techniques have emerged as powerful tools for distinguishing between crop varieties due to their precision and reliability. However, several challenges persist in the adoption and implementation of these techniques. Conventionally, morphological descriptors are routinely used for establishing the identity of varieties. But these morphological descriptors suffer from many drawbacks such as influence of environment on trait expression, epistatic interactions, pleiotrophic effects etc. Furthermore, the paucity of sufficient number of these descriptors for unequivocal identification of increasing number of reference collection of varieties enforces to look for alternatives. Electrophoresis of seed proteins and isozyme analysis have overcome these limitations to some extent but now many powerful DNA based techniques are available. Since all genetic differences between individuals are laid down in the primary sequence of their genomic DNA, the straightforward method of identification of crop varieties and parental lines would be to determine this sequence for the genome under comparison. Sequencing requires huge monitory investment and it is practically impossible to sequence the whole genomes of all varieties. But with the automation in sequencing now possible, short stretches of amplified DNA can be sequenced. However, a more practical strategy would be to limit the comparisons to specific regions of the genome, which frequently differ between individuals.

Food safety scientifically describes various methods of handling, preparation and storage of food to prevent any foodborne illnesses. However, it is important to check the safety between industry, market and the consumer. From the food industry to the market the practices relating to food labeling, food hygiene, food additives and pesticide residues are important to be looked into and the policies on biotechnology. The governmental imports and exports needs to be given proper guidelines. Certification systems and Inspection for foods need to be installed which should be clean and corruption free. When all this is properly considered the food could be safe in the market. This may allow for safe delivery and safe preparation of the food for the consumers. Many diseases are transmitted by food which serves as a growth medium for bacteria and cause food poisoning. In the developed countries it has been observed that there are many intricate standards for food preparation. However, in the developing countries the availability of adequate safe water itself is a question. It is possible to prevent food poisoning to 100%. An ordinance and code regulation in US (1943)was given.

There are several difficulties involved with consuming and storing microgreens. Addressing low shelf life and putting into practice efficient postharvest management for microgreens provide formidable challenges for researchers. It's critical to comprehend any relationships that might exist between spoiling and human pathogen contamination. Research has indicated that microgreens including basil, lettuce, parsley, melons, and spinach can have infections from pathogens during the seed-to-harvest stage (Alegbeleye et al., 2018). Growing environments that support the growth or transfer of microorganisms, processing techniques that expose the crop to contaminants from people or animals, and physiological traits of the plant that facilitate contact and binding with microorganisms are some of the factors that contribute to this risk (Maluin et al., 2021). Because external fertilizers and manures are applied sparingly, there is little contamination even though microgreens are protected from pests and insects by controlled surroundings.

Fermentation process is known to humans since ancient times. It involves the transformation of raw materials into value added or nutritional products as a result of microbial action or their growth. The fermentation as a science involves aspects of the biological action of microbes, biochemical changes in the substrates and metabolites formed and their effect on food, health and nutritional applications. While fermentation as technology, involves chemical engineering, food engineering and instrumentation aspects and commercialization of the products prepared keeping in view the consumer acceptability. The term fermentation is derived from the Latin word ‘Fervere - to boil’ thus describing the actions of yeasts on extracts of fruits or malted grain. Fermented foods and beverages enhance the pleasure of eating and their nutritional roles include indirect contributions through subjective enhancement of appetite. The instant mixes for fermented or fermentable products such as idli, dosai, dhokla and bhatura mix can reduce the overnight fermenting of the raw materials required for preparation of these products. The instant mixes for idli & dhokla are quite common in the market. However, instant mix for Jalebi and Bhatura are still emerging. Such products add convenience to the consumers and products can be prepared instantly. Certain other fermented foods include dairy products, pickles, sauerkrauts, Kanji, beverages, food supplements and nutraceuticals from fermented biomass.

Introduction
Scaling Information Technology (IT) solutions for sustainability presents a complex set of challenges that hinder the ability of organizations and governments to deploy these technologies at scale. As the world faces pressing environmental challenges, such as climate change, resource depletion, and biodiversity loss, the  potential of IT solutions to drive sustainable development has garnered significant attention. Technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), blockchain, the Internet of Things (IoT), and big data analytics can play a crucial role in creating smarter, more efficient systems that optimize resource use, reduce waste, and drive environmental stewardship. However, several barriers must be addressed before IT can be fully harnessed to promote sustainability on a global scale. These barriers include technological, economic, infrastructural, regulatory, and social challenges that impact the scalability of IT solutions for sustainability.

1a. Challenges of biotic stress in Black pepper breeding
The status and future prospects of breeding for biotic stress resistance in black pepper are essential areas of research due to the significant impact of pests and diseases on black pepper crops. Biotic stress, caused by pathogens, pests, and weeds, can severely affect the yield and quality of black pepper, making the development of resistant varieties a critical objective for breeders.
Current status
1. Research efforts: There have been considerable efforts to identify and develop black pepper varieties that are resistant to various biotic stresses. These include resistance to diseases like Phytophthora foot rot (caused by
Phytophthora capsici), quick wilt, nematode infections, and pest attacks like the pollu beetle.
2. Breeding techniques: Traditional breeding methods have been complemented by molecular breeding techniques. Marker-assisted selection (MAS) is increasingly used to accelerate the development of resistant varieties. The integration of genomic tools has also enhanced the efficiency of identifying resistance genes and their incorporation into high-yielding varieties.
3. Resistance sources: Several resistant genotypes have been identified, but their commercial success is still limited. The genetic diversity within black pepper and related species is explored to find novel resistance genes that can be introduced into cultivated varieties.

It has been found that at the household level the health of female members in any family suffers to a large extent. It could be encountered to low health care, poor housing or/and environmental conditions. Due to malnutrition it affects the health to such an extent that it gives rise to many diseases. For a sustainable nutritional status food and various aspects of health needs attention. Looking into that, nutrition is directly related to the health status. For food and nutrition security it is vital to see the availability, accessibility and utilization of food. The World Food Programme (WFP) developed the Vulnerability Analysis and Mapping (VAM) project to analyse the vulnerability to food insecurity of target populations. A prominent part of VAM is related to food access. The demographic and Health Survey (DHS), funded by USAID, provides health data for many countries to help them design their national policy. FAO has developed the Global Information Early Warning System (GIEWS), which collects data related to temporary food insecurity. Under the leadership of WHO, several health surveillance systems have been developed and implemented to monitor the epidemiology of various forms of malnutrition and of selected diseases. At the meso or sub-national level, food market surveys provide data on the availability of food. Agricultural production surveys, intra-household food frequency interviews, immunization surveys and anthropometric surveys of children under five can be used to assess the availability, accessibility and utilization of food and its stability at micro level. Most common Food and Nutrition Security (FNS) indicators at different social and administrative levels depends on the supply and demand. To determine the national situation of food availability data on the production of different food commodities, fertility rate and the trends in internal population needs to be seen. Food prices and per capita food consumption are indicators for national food accessibility. The rates of stunting, wasting and underweight in children, low Body Mass Index (BMI) in adults and low birth weight are FNS impact indicators that designate the extent to which food is adequately being used, utilized and converted into a satisfactory national nutrition situation. Fluctuations and shortages of food availability or accessibility in food prices make the national FNS unstable. Sensitive indicators for accessibility of food are the prices in the market. The sewage disposal and diarrheal diseases (DD) rates affect food utilization.A temporal food and nutrition insecurity arises due to pre and post harvest food availability and accessibility along with low BMI.If the food is in shortage leading to the consumption of more wild foods indicates reduced food availability at household level. Also if the number of meals per day goes down and unemployment increases it indicates low food accessibility.Malnutrition indicators like wasting, goitre or anaemia among the household members show reduced food utilization at micro level. Abstract

The coastal zones are very fragile owing to the reason that these form the junction between the continents and the oceans. Further the multivariate tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which vary independently in their degrees and duration in space and time, act in different permutations and combinations with each other and keep on constructing and destroying the landforms along the coasts. Again, as coastal zones are heavily populated; it adds further pressure on the coastal systems. The paper deals about the hierarchy of issues faced by the coastal zones like tectonic emergence and subsidence and it‘s impacts and the ways, means and needs for measuring the rate of such movements; marine regression and the need for the time series models on the land-ocean boundaries for drawing the sea level curve for India, the Quaternary deltas and the essentiality for understanding the mixture of fluvial and marine forces for the possible future forecasting models; back water modifications, the related issues and the demands for the sediment-chemo dynamics modelling; disaster vulnerabilities and mapping methodologies etc; all using the unexplored vistas of Geomatics technology. The concept has been explained by taking Tamilnadu coast as the reference region.

Introduction

The coastal zones are always fragile as these are formed by the tectonic, fluvial, marine and aeolian processes, which act independently in varying degrees and duration and occur cumulatively in different permutations and combinations along the different parts of the coasts. In addition to such inherent fragility, the coastal zones stand vulnerably exposed to various natural and anthropogenic disasters like seismicity and earth movements, tsunamis, floods, sea level rise, cyclones, coastal erosion etc. Further, owing to the enriched land and water resources, enjoyable eco systems and avenues for intra and intercontinental trades, more than 70% of the global population and the related infrastructure are clustered in the coastal zones. Hence the scientists from all over the world have started showing more attention towards the coastal regions (Ahmed, 1972). The advent of Geomatics technology comprising multi spectral and hyper spectral remote sensing, GIS, GPS, Interferometry, etc. have opened up exhaustive newer vistas in unfurling the hidden complexities of the coastal zones and to provide solutions. From amongst many, the remote sensing based studies carried out by Shailesh Nayak and his team (2004) have brought out many first time information to light about the Indian coasts. But still we will have to go a long way, as the global coasts in general and the Indian coasts in particular are confronted with a hierarchy of challenges and the Geomatics technology can provide answers for these challenging issues owing to its unique virtues. The paper narrates the unique issues of the Indian coasts and how effectively the geomatics technology can be used in solving them. This has been done by taking Tamil Nadu coast as the test area.

The vulnerability of agriculture and livelihoods in the Member Countries of the Centre on Integrated Rural Development for Asia and the Pacific (CIRDAP) poses a significant threat to achieving climate- resilient rural development. CIRDAP includes 15 member countries: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Fiji, India, Indonesia, Iran, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam [CIRDAP, 2023]. ]. In many Asian countries, agriculture is still practiced using traditional methods that do not incorporate climate data or modern techniques. This reliance leads to several challenges, such as reduced productivity and crop diversity, increased vulnerability to weather fluctuations, and hindrance in establishing resilient value chains. For example, in Iran's rural sector, challenges such as centralized planning, patriarchal norms, inefficient extension systems, and weak inter-agency coordination are uniquely defining features (CIRDAP, 2025). Access to finance by the poor, disadvantaged and underprivileged group is a prerequisite of poverty alleviation on one hand and the economic growth on the other. In the struggle against poverty, the financial inclusion is a crucial element. For achieving economic power and self reliance, it is essential to ensure timely access to financial services and adequate credit when they are needed by vulnerable groups such as the weaker sections and low income groups at an affordable cost. Large sections of the rural population have no access to financial services and their only recourse is to borrow from moneylenders at the exorbitant charges causing exploitation. Therefore, financial inclusion, today, has become the national objective and major concern for the economic policy decision makers. The present study will focus on the major challenges and opportunities of financial inclusion in India.

Introduction

Beekeeping is an environment friendly and agro-forestry based occupation that has established itself as an income generating activity and a commercial enterprise which not only promote agricultural and horticultural development but also contributes in upliftment of the rural economy of the country. Apiculture provides enormous potential for income generation, poverty alleviation and sustainable use of forest resources. Traditional beekeeping with Apisceranais widely practised by rural people in Uttarakhand who have inherited the tradition from their forefathers and maintain it till this day. The people in Uttarakhand have indigenous knowledge of beekeeping which is passed from one generation to another. In the hill area traditional hives are more suitable than modern hives. Modern beekeeping is infancy in the area, so people need to be encouraged to use modern bee hives for better management of colonies.

Uttarakhand is a land of variety of flora and fauna. Beekeeping forms an integral part of the small holder farming system and plays a significant role as a source of additional cash income in subsistence farming. There are around 2,50,000 beekeeping units in India out of which only 8,700 are in Uttarakhand accounting for about 2500 MT of honey production in 2016-17. Uttarakhand is extremely rich in Bee forage plants but the use of this rich resource is not being made properly (Tiwari, et al. 2010). Around 20.00 per cent of the Beekeepers in Uttarakhand do not use any medicine for the management of pest and diseases showing that the farmers are not much aware of the advance methods of beekeeping (Khan et al., 2007). Uttarakhand has huge potential for beekeeping due to plenty of flora and suitability of climate. Beekeeping is an ancient practice that is managed traditionally in Kumaon hills of Uttarakhand. Due to the traditional production system the productivity per hive is low in Uttarakhand. Therefore, it is Important to know about the constraintsfaced by the Beekeepers in practicing apiculture in Kumaon Hills of Uttarakhand.

Introduction
Chamomile is generally known as German or Hungarian chamomile. Its herb is commonly used for both medicinal as well as aromatic purposes. It was introduced in India during late fifties by Regional Research Laboratory, Jammu (Handa et. al., 1957) and subsequently in different parts of India. It was successfully grown over saline soils at CIMAP, Lucknow and later at several other locations. It was also introduced at YSPUH&F at Solan (H.P.) under AICRP on M&APs and several parameters were identified for better utilization of inputs for higher production of herb. Its flowers also contain an essential oil with multiple uses.
Origin
It is native to Europe and mainly cultivated in the regions of northern, central and eastern European countries, Mediterranean, N. Africa, United States, Germany, France, Hungary and Russia. It is found grown in wild state in
eastern and southern Europe, West Asia and North Africa.

The word CHAMOMILA is derived from CHAMAEMELUM and MATRICARIA from MATRIX means apple on the ground, because the plant grows to the ground and has an odour like that of apples. It has been used since long as a domestic remedy by the name chamomile.

The chief guiding symptoms belong to the mental and emotion group, which lead to this remedy in many forms of disease. Especially of frequent employment in diseases of children, where peevishness, restlessness, and colic give the needful indications. A disposition that is mild, calm and gentle; sluggish and constipated bowels contra-indicate Chamomilla.

Chamomilla is sensitive, irritable, thirsty, hot, and numb. Oversensitiveness from abuse of coffee and narcotics. Pains unendurable, associated with numbness night-sweats.

The child patient wants to be carried in the arms. His mood is very irritable and snappy. He does not know what he wants. He needs a dose of Chamomilla. Even in elders, the patient is cross, ugly, spiteful and snappish. He cannot bear others. He cannot bear pain. He wants things but on getting them throws them away. He is uncivil.

The objective of the present study was to explore the therapeutic potential of Gymnema sylvestre and ITK formulation against obese streptozotocin-induced type II diabetes and diabetic cardiomyopathy in male Wistar rats. In Phase I study, 80% hot methanolic extract of Gymnema sylvestre leaves and hot aqueous extract of ITK formulation (ingredients gum acacia, black cumin, wheat and barley) was prepared and evaluated for in vitro antioxidant and antidiabetic activity of extracts. Extracts have potent antioxidant (studied by 2, 2-Diphenyl 1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2, 2’-Azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6 sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging assay), antidiabetic (determined by in vitro α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity) and glucose uptake potential in cultured lymphocytes and were observed to possess alkaloids, f lavonoids, saponins, anthraquinones and phenols in Gymnema sylvestre leaves with additional resins, tanins, proteins, glycosides and fixed oils and fat in ITK formulation after screening by qualitative tests and further confirmed to possess active principles having antidiabetic, antioxidant, cardioprotective, nephroprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties.

The food and nutrition policies need to be revisited and updated to address both man-made food scarcities and natural disasters of present and future to mitigate hunger and malnutrition.

SYNOPSIS

With the change of time, and the progressive development in life-style, the menu of food has undergone significant changes in communities, countries, regions and worldwide. This is influenced by the travel, migration of the people, and enhancement of the socio-economic status among the masses.

Introduction

India is more an agrarian economy, wherein about 50 percent of people directly depend on agriculture for employment. Like other developing nations, however, this country is facing some of the challenges like food insecurity, agricultural backwardness and unsatisfied farming community. Though green revolution in 1970s had brought much relief in this direction, liberalized trade polices since mid 1990s created new and complex issues, especially for small and marginal farmers. Also, since recent years the contribution of agriculture to GDP is declining, indicating that there is growth is shifting away from agriculture to industrial and service sectors. The rural-urban migration, primarily due to the poor employment absorption capacity of our traditional agricultural system, lower productivity, changing life styles, etc. is increasing at alarming rate. In spite of all these, the disparity persists within the society and across the region. Such inequalities, as measured through income distribution, consumption pattern and spending of the income, pose a big challenge, as the gaps are widening with the passage of time. Inadequate purchasing power among the poorer communities leads to undernourishment, which in turn affects their productive capacity. Even though huge food grain stocks are distributed among the needy, considerable proportion of the population lack economic access to such food, and have to rely upon the cheap and insufficient food.

Note: With my personal experience, I have learnt many lessons during the course of my journey of life. The reader should ponder over it and prepare own food profile and menu for the benefit of maintaining good health. My paper does not provide any prescription but provides illustration of my experiences only, which may be of some use in knowledge and practice of food. The medical and health experts need to be consulted as appropriate.

22.1 Introduction
Chhana is a dairy product that is produced by coagulating milk with acids such as citric or lactic acid at high temperatures, with the whey subsequently drained. Chhana is the term used to describe the curd that is produced as a consequence. It has a distinctive spongy texture, a mildly acidic flavour, and an off-white colour. Chhana is defined as the product that is produced by precipitating bovine or buffalo milk with sour milk, lactic acid, or citric acid, in accordance with FSSAI standards. The milkfat content must not be less than 50.0 percent on dried matter, and it must not contain more than 70.0 percent moisture. This product may also be prepared using milk solids.

Low fat chhana shall conform to the following requirements
1. The moisture content should not exceed 70.0 percent.
2. The milk fat content should not exceed 15.0 percent of the dry mass.
Additionally, it specifies that such low-fat chhana shall be sold exclusively in sealed packages. Chhana is primarily made from cow’s milk and is utilised in the production of a variety of Bengali sweets. The production of chhana in India consumes roughly 4 to 4.5% of the total milk produced. Sandesh, rasogolla, chamcham, rasomalai, pantoa, and chhana murki are among the numerous desserts that are prepared using chhana as a base.

Channel improvement increases or restores the ability of a river or drainage channel to convey floodwater safely. Natural or artificial channels may lose capacity because of sediment deposition, vegetation, debris, bank encroachment, irregular alignment, insufficient cross-sectional area, or excessive hydraulic resistance. Improvement can involve widening, deepening, straightening, clearing, lining, dredging, bank stabilization, or constructing additional waterways. This chapter discusses the purposes, advantages, disadvantages, and planning principles of channel improvement. It examines channel geometry, flow resistance, permissible velocity, sediment behaviour, erosion protection, and maintenance. The chapter also emphasizes that interventions must be evaluated carefully because poorly planned modifications can accelerate flow, destabilize banks, damage habitats, or shift flooding downstream.

So far much have been talked about the best hydraulic sections, as these appeared to be most economical sections. But as it appears may not be always true and there are exceptions to each individual site conditions.

9.1 Suitable and Economical Cross Section

Best hydraulic sections are most economical in lined and unlined canals. In lined canal this section is economical as long as the cost of earth work (excavation and embankment) is less than the cost of lining per unit length of channel and this is the most usual case. These sections, besides having least area and perimeter also have minimum top width. Therefore land width required is also minimum, in comparison to other wide sections. But if the cost of earth work / excavation is more, such as in rocks, or in very heavy cutting/filling, best hydraulic section do not remain most economical, and recourse to alternative section must be worked out.

Even in unlined channels in deep excavation or in deep filling recourse must be taken to narrower and deeper sections as far as possible.

Also the type of lining in the bed may be cheaper than the lining on sides and in such cases, lining of best section is no more most economical and cost economics of various alternatives including increase in bed width has to be worked out, see para 4.1 and 6.3.

1.0. Introduction

Any commodity, produce or harvest in organic or inorganic form to be fit to eat by a particular society, and contributes materially towards growth and repair of tissue is known as food. Food processing is application of techniques in a systematic manner for preventing losses through preservation, processing, packaging, storage and distribution to ensure greater availability of a wide variety of foods. It is a set of methods and techniques used to transform raw ingredients into food for consumption by humans or animals.

The early stages of food processing were largely confined to primary processing of food crops, commodities and produce whereby all these rendered fit for consumption or sale in the markets. Processing of rice and oil seeds were the necessities of that time for living. Later on, World War II gave a fillip to some of other food processing industries to meet the demand of the defence forces of the country. Fruits and vegetables processing; wheat and sugar milling drew support and sustenance from the exigencies created by war. Post war situation almost merged into the post-independence scenario. However, food processing industry received its first major impulse after independence. During this time, all the primary food processing industries received top most priority and all necessary support from the Governments in the country.

10.0. Introduction

Food processing is an important sector in agriculture, the scope of which has increased manifold that can help to prevent wastage of perishable commodities to a great extent. But, at the same time, food processing industries generate a large quantity and variety of food products, provide employment to a large number of people and uplift their economic status. The production, processing and preparation of food, all results in generation of huge quantity of waste material causing health hazards due to environmental pollution. The waste material may be in the form of leaf/ straw, waste during harvesting, food preparation waste, after processing waste, unused material as waste, food processing operation waste etc. The huge wastage of the food material is due to lack of control on such agri-economy practices. So, the disposal of waste material has become a challenge to the processors, as different agencies are pressurizing for an environment friendly treatment of waste material. The utilization of waste for the production of value added products is very important in the management of food processing waste. Different types of food industries wastes are: i) fermentation industry waste, ii) fruit and vegetable industry waste (Table 10.1) iii) Sugar and starch industry waste, iv) diary industry waste, v) meat processing industry waste, vi) coffee industry waste and vii) palm oil industry waste, viii) fish processing industry waste. So, there is great need to find out options which have positive values of food waste. The options having positive values are: i) minimization of the waste generation, ii) development of value added products. Most of fruit and vegetable wastes are a rich source of vital constituents like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, minerals, fibres etc. Mango seed kernel is rich in carbohydrates, fats, proteins, minerals; orange, melon and pumpkin seeds can provide fats and mineral matters. Apricot kernels are rich source of oil (45%) and proteins.
