1. Introduction
Pharmacognosy, formerly known as materia medica, is the study of unrefined medications derived from minerals, plants, and animals. Although C. A. Seydler coined the phrase in 1815, J. A. Schmidt used it in 1811 to refer to the study of medicinal plants and their characteristics. The word refers to the study or knowledge of medicines and is derived from the Latin terms gignoso, which means “to acquire knowledge of,” and pharmakon, which means “a drug.” Plants, animals, or their parts that have just been dried, sliced longitudinally or transversely, or infrequently peeled after collecting are considered crude pharmaceuticals. The majority of the basic drugs used in medicine are derived from plants, with only a minor portion coming from the animal and mineral kingdoms. Drugs made from plants are full plants, however cinchona bark, ginger rhizome, nux vomica seeds, and senna leaves and pods are plant components. Some medications, such as orange and lemon peels and colchicum corm, are used fresh, but the majority are dried after harvesting. Crude pharmaceuticals can also be obtained by straightforward physical processes like drying or water extraction. Aloe is the dried juice of Aloe species’ leaves, opium is the dried latex from poppy capsules, and black catechu is the dried aqueous extract from Acacia catechu’s wood. Plant exudates such as gums, resins, balsams, volatile oils, and fixed oils are also considered crude medicines. Additional drugs that physicians, surgeons, or pharmacists use directly or indirectly include diatomite for filtering gums or turbid liquids; cotton, silk, jute, and nylon for surgical dressings or kaolin; wax, gelatin, and agar for use as pharmaceutical auxiliaries of flavoring or sweetening agents; and drugs used as insecticides or vehicles. Animal medications can be extracts, like liver extracts, glandular products, such thyroid organs, or whole animals, like can-tharides. Similarly, goods that come from animals include fish liver oils, bee wax, musk, certain hormones, enzymes, and antitoxins. Drugs can be classified as either organized or disorganized. Organized medications come directly from plants and are composed of biological tissues. Unorganized pharmaceuticals are generated by physical intermediary procedures such as cutting, drying, or extraction with water, and although being derived from plants, they do not contain cellular tissue. Thus, unstructured medications include gums, resins, aloe, catechu, opium, and other plant exudates. Kaolin, chalk, diatomite, and other Ayurvedic bhasmas are examples of mineralbased medicines.

1. Introduction Plants naturally contain compounds called phytochemicals. Due to their numerous therapeutic applications, these phytochemicals are becoming more and more well-known these days. Phytochemicals are essential in the fight against a variety of illnesses, including cancer, arthritis, and asthma. These phytochemicals have no side effects like pharmaceutical compounds do. Because the phytochemicals treat illnesses without harming people, they can also be referred to as “man-friendly medicines.” The primary topics of this study are phytochemical collection, extraction, and qualitative and quantitative analysis. In order to protect themselves against herbivores, many plants secrete chemical substances. Examples of therapeutic plants that include the main groups of pharmacologically active phytochemicals are provided below. Weeds that contain phytochemicals, like chickweed, dandelion, and nettle, are frequently found surrounding human settlements. Many phytochemicals, including curcumin, epigallocatechin gallate, genistein, and resveratrol are pan-assay interference compounds and are not useful in drug discovery.

This field examines a wide spectrum of aspects related to these materials, including their history, production, commerce, collection, selection, identification, valuation, preservation, and ultimately, their use. The term “pharmacognosy” was first formally used by C. A. Seydler in his 1815 dissertation, Analecta pharmacognostica. The word itself is derived from the Greek terms pharmakon, meaning drug or medicine, and gnosis, meaning knowledge. Thus, pharmacognosy literally translates to “knowledge of drugs.” It’s crucial to differentiate pharmacognosy from pharmacology due to their distinct areas of focus within the realm of drugs. Pharmacology, aptly defined as “a discourse on drugs,” centers on investigating the effects of drugs and other chemical substances on living systems, be it organs or entire organisms. In contrast, pharmacognosy directs its attention to the origins, identification, and inherent properties of natural products – often from plants, but also including other biological sources – that exhibit potential medicinal or economic significance. Pharmacognosy, by its very nature, is an interdisciplinary science, integrating knowledge from a variety of scientific domains. A strong foundation in botany is fundamental for the accurate identification and classification of medicinal plants. Chemistry is indispensable for elucidating the chemical constituents of these natural products and understanding their characteristics. Zoology provides insights into drugs and materials derived from the animal kingdom. Moreover, the principles of physics and genetics are applied to tackle diverse issues concerning the identity, purity, quality control, and effective preservation of these important natural resources.

For millennia, humans have forged an intimate relationship with the natural world, recognizing and harnessing the therapeutic potential of plants for healing. This unit, “Introduction to Herbal Medicines,” embarks on a comprehensive exploration of plant-based therapies, delving into their historical evolution, fundamental terminology, integration within traditional healing systems, and the practical aspects of their cultivation, processing, and utilization. We aim to provide a solid bedrock of knowledge, enabling a deeper understanding of the science and practice of herbal medicine, and appreciating its enduring significance in the modern world."
1. History and Scope of Herbal Medicines
1.1 Ancient Beginnings: The Dawn of Plant-Based Healing
• Paleolithic Roots: Our most ancient ancestors, from the Paleolithic period, are believed to have harbored a refined comprehension of the pharmacological attributes of vegetation. Excavations have unearthed indications of specific plant utilization for addressing physical trauma and maladies, underscoring an early grasp of their remedial efficacy. This knowledge was likely passed down through oral traditions, forming the foundation of future herbal practices.
• Civilizational Emergence: With the rise of civilizations, medicinal plant use became more structured and recorded. In ancient Sumeria, clay tablets inscribed with cuneiform script, dating back to 3000 BC, record the use of various plants for medicinal purposes, showcasing organized knowledge of herbal remedies. The Egyptian Ebers Papyrus (c. 1550 BC), a remarkable medical text, provides detailed prescriptions for treating a wide array of ailments using plants like aloe vera, garlic, and opium, evidencing a sophisticated understanding of pharmacotherapy. In India, the ancient system of Ayurveda, with its foundational texts, the Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita, meticulously documents the use of numerous medicinal plants, emphasizing a holistic approach to health. Similarly, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), with the Shennong Bencao Jing (c. 1st century AD), provides a comprehensive pharmacopeia, demonstrating the profound integration of herbal remedies into Chinese medical practice.

1. MATURITY INDICES
Maturity indices (right time of harvesting) are quality factors that give clues as to when a product should be harvested to allow marketing flexibility and ensure the attainment of minimum acceptable quality to the user. It also refers to the set of criteria used to determine the stage of maturity for harvesting the horticultural crops. Commodities harvested either pre-mature or too late are more susceptible to postharvest physiological disorders, diseases and have poor shelf life than harvested at right stage of maturity. The pickers/ handlers are trained in methods of identifying produce that is ready for harvest. However, optimum harvesting stages depends upon type of produce and their final use. Horticultural crops may be harvested at two main maturity levels i.e., physiological maturity and commercial or horticultural maturity. Therefore, the proper stage/maturity indices for harvesting of all horticultural crops should be identified for their implementation during harvesting. Horticultural maturity in relation to developmental stages of the plants is depicted in Fig 3.1.
Maturity indices are different for different horticultural crops and are employed to:
1. Ensure sensory quality (flavour, colour, aroma, and texture) and nutritional quality: Harvesting horticultural produce too early (under-developed or immature produce) will result

I. INTRODUCTION
The fruits and vegetables we eat and flowers and ornamentals we enjoy are biological entities. They breath, produce heat, perspire, are easily damaged, get diseases and finally die. These carry on processes characteristics of all living things before or after harvest to perform the metabolic activities:
1. to maintain cellular organization
2. to transport metabolites around the tissue and
3. to maintain membrane permeability.
The job of postharvest technologist is to understand life in fruits, vegetables and flowers and prolong their life as much as possible. The post harvest life of produce depends on the rate at which they use up their stored food reserves and their rate of water loss. The sugar and starches (carbohydrate derivatives) are stored in various parts of plants through a process known as photosynthesis occurring in growing plants and are used later to provide energy for further growth, development and to prolong post-harvest life. The process of photosynthesis in growing plants and respiration in harvested produce can be seen in Fig. 2.1. The released energy through process known as respiration occurs in plants before and after harvest. Thus, principal normal physiological processes leading to aging are respiration and transpiration.

I. INTRODUCTION
Horticultural crops include fruits, vegetables, flowers, plantation crops, spices, and medicinal and aromatic plants have emerged as a major economic activity in India. It contributes 30% GDP from 11.73 % of its arable land area. Horticulture crops cover over 23.4 million hectares of area, which is approximately 12.7% of the total gross cropped area of the country and contributes 18-20% of the gross value of India’s agricultural output (NHB, 2013). India is the world’s second largest fruit and vegetable producing country accounting for 77.7 million metric tonnes of fruit and 159.5m M tonnes of vegetables (NHB, 2013). Besides, about 5.66 million tonnes of loose flowers, spices, mushroom and aromatic plants are also produced. The country produces 41% of world mangoes, 23% banana, 24% cashew nut, 36% green peas, 10% onion and 30% cauliflower and accounts for 12% of world fruit and 13.25% of vegetable production (NHB, 2013). Owing to wide diversity of agro climatic conditions, almost all types of temperate (apple, peach, plum, apricot, cherries and nuts), subtropical (mango, guava, papaya, etc), tropical (banana, pineapple etc), arid fruit (ber and aonla), plantation crops (coconut, cashewnut and arecanut) and diverse variety of vegetables are grown in India. The export of fresh fruit and vegetables from India in 2006-07 was estimated at 9.84 Lakh tonnes valued at Rs 2411.70 crores. Mango, grapes, apple, onion, potato, green vegetables like okra, bitter gourd and green chillies were the major items of export. Similarly, India exported 5.97 Lakh tonnes of processed foods comprising of mango pulp, juices, concentrates, dried and processed vegetables, pickle and chutney, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages worth Rs 2818.1 crores (APEDA, 2012) (Table 1 to 3).

Coffee is grown at higher elevation across the Western Ghats between 750 and 1200 m amsl. It requires a certain degree of shade for its better performance.  The annual rainfall over the coffee growing tracts varies between 1400 and 2600mm, having uni/bi-model rainfall with prolonged dryspell from November to May. It is more so over North of the Western Ghats. The mean annual maximum temperature varies between 24 and 300C while the minimum between 15 and 180C. The difference between maximum and minimum temperatures (temperature range) varies between 5 and 160C across the coffee tract. The ‘Monsooned Malabar Coffee’ is a specialty coffee produced from the erstwhile ‘Malabar Region’. It undergoes certain changes in physical and biochemical characters when the coffee beans are processed during the summer monsoon (June to September). It is processed at Mangalore, located in Coastal Karnataka. The processing location experiences heavy rainfall of more than 1000 mm in July, followed by 950 mm in June and 600 mm in August. Out of 3264 mm of annual rainfall, 2852 mm is received during the monsoon period. It accounts more than 80 per cent of annual rainfall. The maximum temperature during the coffee monsooning period varies between 28 and 30°C while night temperature revolves between 22 and 24°C. Being located in the tropics along the West Coast, the crop processing environment in terms of surface air temperature is relatively uniform and moderate with a characteristic feature of heavy clouds and continuous rainfall during the monsoon period. These monsoon features are more predominant from the middle of June to August during which the coffee beans are subjected to monsooning. The coffee beans
bulge in the process of monsooning and the volume increases significantly due to absorption of atmospheric moisture. It is directly related to the monsoonal wind during which coffee beans are processed. The bulging was less in all the samples processed during monsoon 2003, which varied from 2.1 to 2.7 ml/100 number, while it ranged between 2.7 and 5.8 ml/100 number in the samples processed during monsoon 2004.

The Government of India, during 1980s, recognized the necessity to improve the latex yield productivity in the traditional rubber growing regions and also expand these plantations to non-traditional regions to meet the ever increasing demands of natural rubber in India (Sethuraj et al., 1989). Agrometeorological studies were initiated during early 1986 with the appointment of a Scientist (Agrometeorology). To begin with, scientific issues were identified as: (a) delineate the potential non-traditional regions for expansion of rubberplantations, (b) estimate the impact of climatic conditions, especially abiotic  stress conditions on productivity, (c) quantify influence of meteorological factors on the physiological responses towards plant growth and yield attributes, (d) estimate the irrigation requirements to mitigate the drought conditions, and (e) develop weather based predictive models for `Abnormal leaf fall’ disease of rubber plantations. An attempt is made to present synthesis of accomplishments during 1986 to 1992 period of my association with the Rubber Research Institute of India (RRII), Kottayam.

The global economy has adversely been affected to a considerable extent due to weather related disasters like droughts, floods, heat waves and cold waves which are not uncommon in the recent past due to global warming and climate change. For the first time, the year 1998 was declared as the weather related disastrous year globally. The year 2015 was the warmest year globally, again. Such weather phenomenon of warming more and more year after year was noticed in the current decade as well when we look at 2023 and 2024. The year 2010 was the warmest year ever recorded, followed by 2009 in India. The occurrence of floods and droughts, cold and heat waves adversely affected the Indian foodgrains production to a large extent across the Country in one or other region as seen in 2014, 2012, 2009, 2004, 2002 and 1987. The cold wave in winter 2003- 04 across the Northeast region of the Country and the heat wave in summer 2004 across the same region are still in memory to understand the ill effects in agriculture/horticulture/poultry/inland fisheries sectors. Model simulations
indicate that a marked increase in rainfall and temperature over India would be seen during the current century. The maximum expected increase in rainfall is likely to be 10–30% over the Central India. Temperatures are likely to increase between 2 and 30Cby the end of 2100 A.D. However, steps taken towards the green energy across the world may yield results not to allow atmospheric global temperature beyond 1.5 to 20C. Greater number of high surges and increased occurrence of cyclones in post monsoon period along with increased maximum wind speed are also expected along the East Coast of the Country. The summer droughts and heavy rains leading to waterlogging, floods and landslides during the monsoon period is a threat to plantation crops which are predominantly grown in the Humid Tropics like Kerala (8°15` N and 12°50`N latitudes and between 74°50`E and 77°30`E longitudes).

The natural habitat of rubber (Heavea brasiliensis) is rain forests of the Amazon basin, situated within 5° North and South at altitudes below 200m. The climate of this region is equatorial monsoon type characterized by mean
monthly temperature by 25 to 28°C, well distributed rainfall and no marked dry weather. Though it is originated in the Amazon basin, it is now predominantly grown in the tropics where an equatorial monsoon type climate prevails. Regions between 8°N and 10°S which includes Indonesian archipelago, Malaysia, southern part of Sri Lank  and some other Islands, are better suited to rubber cultivation. The production of natural rubber in the country was 8.65 lakh MT in 2008–09, registering a 4.74 per cent growth compared to the previous year. India is the fourth largest producer of natural rubber with a share of eight per cent in the World after Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia and the fourth largest consumer of natural rubber after China, USA and Japan. Among the rubber growing countries in the World, India occupies a pride place with the top most position in productivity (Table 9.1). The productivity of natural rubber (NR) in India in 2009–10 was 1784 kg/ha. In 1950–51, it was 284 kg/ha. The growth achieved in terms of the productivity of natural rubber is 628 per cent. This achievement

Tea (Camellia sinensis) is one of the most important beverage crops in the World and the second most commonly drank liquid on earth after water. It has numerous medicinal benefits mainly due to its antibacterial and
antioxidant properties. The major tea growing regions of the world are South-East Asia (India and Sri Lanka), Eastern and South Africa consisting of Kenya, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique. All these countries are producers of black tea. China and Japan are the major producers of green tea. These countries experience cool, tropical humid climate where this crop is being cultivated. However, at present, the crop is also being cultivated in wide range of climates from Mediterranean to warm, humid tropics to include countries such as Russia and Georgia in the northern latitudes and Argentina and Australia in the southern latitudes (Plate 8. 1). The region to which the crop is grown is closely linked with the climate. The crop is grown across wide altitudes up to 2200 m a.m.s.l. Sri Lanka, Kenya, China and Vietnam are the major competitors to India in tea exporting field. China is the major producer of green tea while Sri Lanka and Indonesia are producing mainly orthodox varieties of tea. Tea industry in India occupies an important place in the national economy since last 172 years. It is an essential item of domestic consumption. Tea is also considered as the cheapest beverage amongst the beverages available in India.

Black pepper (Piper nigrum L.), famous as “Black Gold” and also known the “King of Spices” is the most important agricultural commodities of commerce and trade in India. It is the most important, most popular and most widely used spice in the World. Of the total spices traded internationally, black pepper accounts for 34 per cent. South West India is the traditional home of this important spice, particularly the Malabar Coast. Black pepper is also grown in tropical zones such as the Asia Pacific Region, mainly India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, China, Vietnam and Cambodia. Outside the Asia Pacific region, the crop is distributed in Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, etc., totaling about 26 countries. It is grown successfully between 20°N and 20°S latitude and from mean sea level to 1500 meters above sea level. World’s black pepper production varies in the range of 2.7 to 3.35 tonnes annually. The major production share is contributed by Vietnam with an annual production of 80,000 tonnes. About 85 per cent of the World trade of pepper is determined by the largest pepper producing countries in the International Pepper Community (IPC). World export fluctuates around 1.5–2.5 lakhs tonnes per annum. Global black pepper supply has shown a drastic increase over last ten years except in 2008–09. Vietnam’s sudden increase in production has resulted in the massive global out put of 3–3.5 lakhs metric tonnes from 1.9–2.0 lakhs metric tonnes in late nineties. 

Arabica coffee is reported to have originated in the tropical rain forests in Ethiopian highlands while Robusta is a native of the humid tropical lowlands of Central Africa, probably, Uganda. The major coffee producing countries
across the World are distributed between 23°N and 23°S of the equator. Beyond these latitudinal limits, temperature becomes a major limiting factor as coffee plants are sensitive to extreme temperature regimes. Thus within
the latitudes, altitude becomes a major factor. In areas, nearer to the equator, coffee plants require higher altitudes when compared to farther north and south (6.1 plate). The world’s largest coffee producer is Brazil with around 30% of total world output of coffee. Columbia comes in second with around two thirds of Brazil’s production. India is the sixth largest (after Brazil, Columbia, Vietnam, Indonesia and Ethiopia) producer of coffee. Coffee is reportedly introduced into the Western Ghats regions of South India around 1600 AD. However, commercial cultivation of coffee was opened in South India with the British enterprise and investment during late 1820s. Coffee occupies an important position among the plantation crops in India. It is cultivated mainly in the traditional States of Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and to some extent in non-traditional areas viz., Andhra Pradesh and Orissa as well as in North Eastern States viz., Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh. Coffee in India is unique. Almost all coffee plantation are grown under the shade of forest/planted trees, where as it is grown under open conditions in all the major producing countries viz., Brazil, Vietnam and Columbia.

Small cardamom (Elettaria cardamomum Maton), popularly known as the “Queen of spices”, occupies an important position among the foreign exchange earning commodities. It is cultivated on a commercial scale in Sri
Lanka, Guatemala, Tanzania and Papua New Guinea. Guatemala is the largest producer of cardamom in the World. In India, it is confined to the States of Kerala, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. Among these States, Kerala
accounts for the major portion of production (58.4 %), followed by Karnataka (35.2 %) and Tamil Nadu (6.4 %). In Kerala, Cardamom is mainly grown in the erstwhile Travancore area in Idukki district and it is known as the Cardamom Hill Reserve (CHR). Cardamom is a native of the moist evergreen rain forests of the Western Ghats and is grown extensively in the hilly regions at elevations of 700 to 1300 metres as an under crop in forest lands. Cardamom thrives well within certain maximum and minimum thermal regimes. It is believed that diurnal symmetries in temperature trends, if any, have close links with the changes in cloudiness, humidity, atmospheric circulation pattern, winds and soil moisture. The land use pattern of cardamom tracts has changed to a great extent in recent decades. Crops like coffee, black pepper and areca nut are being cultivated at many locations in place of cardamom. With denudation of forests in many cardamom areas, the ideal cool humid microclimate has been destabilized and adversely affected the productivity of the crop.

Cocoa is popularly known as cacao in many cocoa growing nations. Cocoa beans are the source of commercial cocoa. The cocoa products viz., cocoa liquor, cocoa butter, cocoa cake, cocoa powder and cocoa chocolate are widely consumed across the World. Cocoa powder is essentially used as flavour in biscuits, ice cream, dairy drinks and cakes. Apart its use as flavour it is also used in the manufacture of coatings for confectioners or frozen desserts. Cocoa powder is also consumed by the beverage industry for example for the preparation of chocolate milk. Besides the traditional uses in chocolate manufacture and confectionery, cocoa butter is also used in the manufacture of tobacco products, soap and cosmetics. It is also a folk remedy for burns, cough, dry lips, fever, malaria, rheumatism, snakebite and wounds. It is reported to be antiseptic and diuretic. Looking at the industry needs for various purposes, there is a heavy demand for cocoa. At present, the gap between supply and demand in cocoa appears to be more at the national level. To fill the gap, various agro-technologies and crop improvement strategies are to be chalked out, for which the response of the crop to various environmental factors are to be understood. Weather aberrations during the flowering and fruiting result in the final cocoa production. Therefore, it is important to understand the effect of weather on flowering and fruiting pattern of cocoa to minimize the crop losses against the weather abnormalities. Though it is known that cocoa yield is highly variable and sensitive to various weather factors, the studies on crop weather relationships in cocoa and its response to climate change/variability are relatively scant

The Coconut palm, also known as the Cocos Nucifera L., is one of the most fascinating and beautiful palms in the world. The coconut is believed to have originated in southeast Asia (Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines) or Micronesia. Coconut has been cultivated in India since ages and plays an important role in social, economic and cultural activities of the people. The palm is amenable to both plantation and homestead management and it can be either a major crop or a minor one in a homestead garden of mixed crops. While responding favourably to scientific management, the palm also tolerates negligent farming to a certain extent. Thus, it can adapt to the divergent farming situations and management practices that are prevalent in different agro-climatic regions. The coconut palm is usually found near the sea on sandy beaches where it can tolerate salt spray and brackish soils. It is also grown under different soil types such as loamy, laterite, coastal sandy, alluvial, clayey and reclaimed soils of the marshy low lands. The ideal soil conditions for better growth and performance of the
palm are proper drainage, good water holding capacity, and presence of water table within three metres and absence of rock or any hard substratum within two meters of the surface. The coconut palm can also grow well inland, within altitudinal limit of 600 m to 1000 m in the Tropics. It requires an equatorial climate with high humidity. A year-round warm and humid climate favours thegrowth of coconut. The palm does not withstand prolonged spells of extreme weather/climate variations under rain fed conditions. A welldistributed rainfall of 1300–2300 mm per annum is preferred. It is known as a coastal tree since it is grown along the Coasts and Islands and does not tolerate high diurnal temperature range, that is the difference between the maximum and minimum temperatures.

Cashew (Anacardium occidentale L.) is a native of Brazil and was introduced in India by the Portuguese during the16th Century. It is grown in India, Brazil, Vietnam, Tanzania, Mozambique,
Indonesia, Sri Lanka and other tropical Asian and African countries. The crop is grown within the latitudinal belt of 27°N and 28°S of the equator experiencing the tropical climates for its growth and development. It is categorised under one of the plantations along the West and East Coasts. To a limited extent cashew is cultivated in Gujarat, Chattisgarh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Tripura, Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The crop is mostly grown in low and midlands along the West and East Coasts of India in sandy and laterite soils. Since it is mostly grown along the Coast across the Country it is also known as the Coastal Tree. Cashew grows along the West and East Coasts of India from South to North, lying between 09°N and 23oN latitudes. Though it grows beyond 23°N latitude, its production is relatively low as the reproductive phase coincides with cold injury/low temperature during
winter (December-February). Being a tropical coastal tree, it cannot thrive under low winter temperature. There is significant yield variation in cashew among the different agroclimatic zones of the country. Year-to-year yield variation is also significant as the crop is weather sensitive. This crop may come up even in waste lands with specific crop management practices along the West Coast and as a shelter belt and wind break along the East Coast.

Coconut, cocoa (cacao), coffee, cashew, cardamom, black pepper, tea, rubber, oil palm and areca nut are the major plantation crops that are perennially grown along the coastal belt in southern States of the Country and to some extent in high rainfall zones of the northeastern States of India. These crops are also known as perennial crops. The life span of these crops varies from fifteen to sixty years or more depending upon the crop and its management. Coconut and cashew are also popularly known as the coastal trees. Cardamom and black pepper are also known as the spice crops. Once these plantation crops are well established, they mature for fruiting in three to eight years depending upon the nature of plantation crops and the crop management. The reproductive phase is seen round-the-year in case of coconut and cocoa. Cashew is one of the plantation crops with seasonality in fruiting from September to June. Cocoa is mostly grown as an intercrop in coconut gardens and in some pockets as a pure crop. Black pepper is trained to coconut and areca nut in many locations and seen as mono crop as well. All these crops are grown in laterite, sandy and alike in well drained soils. The hill slopes with terrace cultivation are also suitable for all the plantation crops. Tea, coffee and cardamom are seen on hillocks extending up to the base. Some of the plantation crops are seen in multitier cropping system as well as mixed/intercrops/homestead gardens. They are grown mostly under the rain fed and summer irrigation is beneficial for better harvest. The plantation crop distribution, production and productivity are influenced by air temperature, rainfall and the other meteorological variables viz. sunshine, cloud cover, solar radiation, vapour pressure, evapotranspiration, humidity and wind. Interestingly, coffee spread in Wayanad District while cardamom in Idukki District. Coffee experiences unimodel rainfall while bimodal in the case of cardamom.

1. Blast
Symptoms: All above ground parts (leaf, leaf sheath, culm) of the plant are affected. There are three type of blasts (leaf blast, node blast, neck blast)
Leaf blast: Eye or spindle shaped spots on leaves (margin is dark brown and centre becomes ashy) and leaf sheath are observed. Several spots appear on the leaves cause blightening.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) provides the highest oil yield per hectare among all oil crops (Corley and Tinker, 2008; Rival and Levang, 2014). Examining the global palm oil production statistics, which is extracted from the mesocarp of the oil palm, the total world production stands at 79.464 million tonnes. Indonesia leads the world production with 59%, while India ranks 13th with a production of 0.305 million tonnes, contributing insignificantly to the world palm oil production. Additionally, India imports about 19% of the world’s palm oil, accounting for 9.3 million tonnes, with a net worth of 11.7 billion U.S. dollars (USDA IPAD, 2024; Statista, 2024).
In this challenging scenario, expanding the cultivation area of oil palm with high-yielding, disease-resistant, and dwarf statured varieties is imperative. The National Mission on Edible Oil-Oil Palm has set a target area of 27,99,087 hectares, but the achieved area is only 3,70,028 hectares (NMEO-OP). To meet this target, obtaining quality planting material is crucial. Traditionalvegetative propagation is not viable for oil palm due to its lack of axillary branching or axillary meristem. Given its highly cross-pollinated nature and long breeding cycle, obtaining true-to-type progeny is challenging. Therefore, the importance of propagation through in vitro mass multiplication techniques in this crop cannot be overstated.

Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the most valuable and popular fruit crops all over the world (Mohsen, 2021). In India, grapes are mainly grown for table, raisin and wine making. Major grape producing countries are China, Italy, France, Spain, USA, Turkey, and India while, major wine producing countries are France, Italy, Spain, and USA (OIV, 2024). According to an estimate, grapevine is spread on an area of 1.71 lakh ha and production was 37.81 lakh MT in the country during the year 2023-24 (NHB, 2024). India ranks first in world for grape productivity and 7th for grape production during 2023-24 (APEDA, 2024).
Traditionally, grapes are grown on their own roots. However, due to deteriorating soil and water conditions, the use of rootstocks has become essential in the tropical climate of India to maintain production (Singh and Sharma, 2005). The grape industry which is important to produce wine and table grapes is facing  significant challenges due to changing climatic conditions. Climate change has led to increased temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events, all of which can adversely affect grapevine health and productivity. To combat, the role of grape rootstocks has become increasingly vital for maintaining sustainable viticulture. Grape rootstocks are the belowgraft joint part of the grapevine onto which the scion variety is grafted. These rootstocks are typically derived from species of Vitis genus other than Vitis vinifera, the primary species used for grape production.

India, internationally recognized as the principal producer, consumer and exporter of spices globally, is often referred to as the spice bowl of the world. A total of 75 spices out of 109 are cultivated in the country, among which
pepper, cardamom, chillies, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and fenugreek are of significant importance. The approximate export of spices during 2021- 22 was 15,31,154 MT valued at 30,576.44 crore (US $4,102.29 million)
compared to 17,58,985 MT valued at 30,973.32 crore (US $ 4,178.80 million) during the previous financial year. Indian spices are exported to more than 180 destinations, with the leading importers being USA, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, UAE, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, UK, Indonesia, and Germany. The key spice-producing states of India include Himachal Pradesh (ginger), Haryana (garlic), Karnataka (pepper, ginger, cardamom (small), chilli, turmeric and garlic), Orissa (ginger, chilli, turmeric, and garlic), Kerala (pepper, chilli, turmeric, nutmeg, mace, and clove) and Rajasthan (coriander, chilli, cumin, garlic, fenugreek, fennel, and ajwain).

Of the 75 spices grown in India, 20 are classified as seed spices, where the economically important part is the seed.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus Moench), known in many English-speaking countries as lady’s finger or gumbo, belongs to family Malvaceae. The geographical origin of okra is disputed and supposed to be South Asian, Ethiopian and West African origins (Anonymous, 20013a). Its proposed parents are reported to be in South Asian; therefore, it is believed that perhaps it is of South Asian origin. However, because of greater diversity in okra in West African region, it is considered to be originated in West Africa. Masters (1875) proposed that it originated in India.
Okra is cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions, including the Middle East, Africa, Brazil, Turkey and southern states of USA (IBPGR, 1990; Jideani and Adetula, 1993; Acquistucci and Francisci, 2002). In tropics it is cultivated during summer and in the warmer parts of the temperate regions. It is an annual or perennial plant, growing up to 2 m height. The leaves are 10–20 cm long and broad, palmately lobed with 5-7 lobes. The flowers are 4–8 cm in diameter, with five petals which are generally yellow, but often white with a red or purple spot at the base of each petal. The fruit is a capsule which may attain length up to 18 cm containing numerous round seeds. Okra is an allopolyploid of uncertain parentage (proposed parents include Abelmoschus ficulneus, A. tuberculatus and a reported “diploid” form of okra).

Introduction
Vegetable crops are highly susceptible to biotic stresses indicated by disease causing micro-organism (fungi, bacteria, virus and phytoplasma). Indiscriminate use of chemicals for the control of diseases, insect pest have
several disadvantages, particularly increased cost of cultivation, residual toxicity in food chain and development of resistance against pathogen. Management of diseases involves use of resistant varieties and integration of cultural and chemical control measures. Of the biotic stresses much of the breeding efforts have been directed towards developing resistance against diseases. In fact, breeding for resistance, has been one of the most important objective of vegetable breeder in the last half of the century. Genes that contribute to pathogen tolerance/resistance can be obtained from local germplasm resources, or through exotic lines, wild species or genera, or lines from other breedingprograms. In the biotechnological approaches for vegetable breeding also,  most of the achievement has been to generate transgenic plants resistance to disease. Often breeding for resistance has assumed greater importance in a number of vegetable crops.
Major Diseases of Tomato
Early blight: The casual organism is Alternaria solani. The symptoms appears as small, black spots with enlarged and concentric rings in a bull’s eye pattern in the center of the leaves. Tissue surrounding the spots may turn yellow. On fruits, dark brown concentric rings are seen that affects the market quality.

Vegetable crops belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae are known as cucurbits. These include 950 species in over 90 genera, mainly distributed in the tropics and subtropics (Schaefer and Renner, 2011). Enormous diversity of cucurbit genetic resources has evolved in past centuries to cater the nutritional requirements of people in different geographical and climatic regions. A large number of cucurbitaceous vegetables coming from different centres of origin are cultivated worldwide (Table 1). However, these crops are challenged by several biotic and abiotic stresses. Cultivated varieties are constrained by market demands, the necessity for climatic adaptations, domestication bottlenecks, and in most cases, limited capacity for interspecific hybridization, creating narrow genetic bases for crop improvement. Genetic resources are the building block for any crop improvement programme and includes landraces, traditional varieties, wild, weedy and other related species constituting primary, secondary and tertiary gene pools. They are valuable sources of important genetic traits needed for developing resilient and climate smart crop varieties and therefore, important for food security. The success and pace of the development depends on the efficient use of plant genetic resources. Wild relatives are incredible genetic resources carrying several desirable attributes like nutritional quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses etc. Most of the crop wild relatives of cultivated crops across the world are not receiving adequate attention for their effective utilization in breeding programs. It is therefore, of utmost priority to protect them in the wild, through in-situ conservation, where they can continue to evolve and develop these useful adaptations. ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR) is the nodal agency for the management of national wealth of vegetable genetic resources speciallyworking for collections, characterization, identification and documentation of new germplasm. Besides, it also bears the responsibility for conservation of the germplasm for future through sustainable use. The Vegetable germplasm is being conserved both under in-situ and ex-situ genebanks. This chapter highlights the status of Cucurbit genetic resources and procedures to access the germplasm by various stakeholders for research use.
 

Globally, India ranked second in vegetable production and contributed 15.8 and 14% to global vegetable area and production, respectively. The production of vegetables in India is estimated to be 212.91 million tonnes in the year 2022-23 compared to 209.14 million tonnes in the year 2021-22. India ranked first in production of okra in the world (73% of world production) and second in brinjal (27.55%), cabbage (13%) and tomato (11%). The major vegetable growing states in India are West Bengal (14.1%), Uttar Pradesh (11.4%), Bihar (9.3%), Madhya Pradesh (8.0%) and Gujarat (7.1%). Vegetables are especially important crops for farmers with small holdings because an appreciably higher income per hectare can be generated by growing vegetables than from conventional staple crops (Genova et al, 2006). However, vegetables are generally considered more vulnerable than staple crops to stressful environmental conditions including extremes of temperatures, drought, salinity, alkalinity, water logging, mineral nutrient excesses and deficiency (Chinnusamy et al, 2005). These environmental stresses are likely to be exacerbated by the prevalent climatic changes in many parts of the world.
Among environmental factors, soil salinity stress is one of the main factor reducing production and productivity of vegetables in arid and semi-arid regions where irrigation water has excessive salt and annual rainfall is low. In India, about 6.73 million ha of land (~2.1% area of the country) is salt affected, out of which 2.96 million ha is saline and 3.77 million ha is sodic (Arora & Sharma 2017). About 75% of salt-affected areas exist in four states, i.e., Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Rajasthan (Mandal et al., 2018).

The perennial nature of fruit crops coupled with high heterozygosity, protracted juvenility, and lack of information on inheritance patterns of important traits of economic significance is responsible for slow progress in breeding of fruit crops. Citrus is one of the most popular fruit crops cultivated in around 140 countries of the world mainly in the Asia-Pacific region. In Asia, citrus fruits are a major crop for the local people in meeting their nutritional requirements and livelihood. Citrus is cultivated as an indispensable cash crop both for domestic consumption and the export market. Recently, the citrus production has shown an increasing trend mainly attributed to its increased demand as a nutritious and healthy drink owing to the possession of many medicinal and antioxidant properties in its fruits.
The clonal selection has been used primarily as one of traditional breeding methods because bud sport mutations arise frequently in Citrus (Iwamasa et al., 1981; Uzun et al., 2004). This method of breeding generally offers many advantages to select clones suitable for their identified uses. Yield and fruit quality are the major targets of breeding and both these can be enhanced through clonal selection of natural mutants or seedlings. The major aim of the clonal selection studies is the selection of clones bearing regularly for many years, improved fruit appearance and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. In general, identifying the elite clones, testing them under different climatic conditions, and freeing them from the virus and virus-like pathogens carried by the mother plants are major steps involved in clonal selection (Ulubelde et al., 1986) for the improvement of fruit crops.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.), a subtropical perennial fruit tree, belongs to family Sapindaceae and is indigenous to China. Its cultivation spread to the neighbouring countries of the south-east Asian region and other countries. The fruit of litchi is small, heart-shaped, conical or spherical in shape and pinkish red to bright-red in colour, with varying colour intensity in different cultivars. The pulp of fruit is crispy and grape-like in texture, very succulent and aromatic and is generally characterized by a sweet, acid, juicy and soft taste. Because of these reasons, litchi is highly prized in its fresh form as well as in different processed formulations. The total litchi production is about 24,00,000 tonnes from the net cultivated are of about 8,00,000 ha. The main litchi-producing countries are China, India and Thailand, whereas it is commercially grown also in many other countries. Of the total world litchi production, China and India contribute about 90%. Although litchi plants are long-lived, even then new plantings of this fruit are being done regularly, ensuring the continuous growth of production at the global level. In India, where this fruit can be grown in off season also in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the litchi production is about 7,37,200 tonnes from an area of 99,170 ha (Chandrakala et al., 2023).
 

Probably since the beginning of human life on the planet, they have used local fruits and vegetables. For a long time, they have enjoyed the fruit of the wild trees without knowing how to successfully produce them. Such native fruit trees have many advantages. These trees have an extraordinary genetic diversity that can be exploited in breeding programs and genetic advancement of domestic varieties (Khadivi et al., 2020). Many indigenous fruits are still highly valuable, and the harvesting and selling of these forest fruits contribute significantly to the local economy of families in the area. The product collected from forest trees is completely healthy and in terms of quality, they may even be equal to “organic fruits”. In a most recently published book chapter entitled organic pomegranate production in Iran, compiled by Alizadeh and Varasteh (2024), wild pomegranates were considered as noble source of healthy food. Given the multifunctional, ubiquitous nature of wild edible fruits the present chapter was compiled to introduce wild fruit trees of northern Iran with a focus on providing more detailed information about wild pomegranates.
Geographical Aspects of Northern Iran Northern Iran
is a geographical region encompassing a relatively large and fertile area, located along the southern border of the Caspian Sea and the Alborz Mountains. Upon closer examination of the map of Iran (Fig. 1), one can identify three northern provinces: Golestan, Mazandaran, and Gilan. These provinces all share borders with the Caspian Sea and the Alborz Mountains. The Alborz mountain range extends from the western border with the Republic of Azerbaijan to the eastern border with Turkmenistan (Fig.1).

Genome editing has emerged as a powerful tool for accelerating crop improvement in horticultural crops by enabling precise modifications in their genetic architecture. Considering the development and advantages of genomeediting technologies in improving diverse characteristics of horticultural crops, substantial increase has been reported in recent years including ZFN, TALEN, and especially CRISPR/Cas systems. The CRISPR/Cas technology has proved its potential in altering many genes of interest in horticultural plants including fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants for improving agronomically important traits and attributes such as growth rate, seed size, flowering time, flower color, storage time, resistance to biotic stresses, tolerance to abiotic stresses, herbicide tolerance, metabolism, fruit color, fruit ripening etc. This technology opens new avenues for more favorable and precise manipulation of plant genomes to improve crop performance.
Genome editing has emerged as a powerful biotechnological tool with transformative potential for horticultural crops. It involves the precise modification of plant DNA to enhance desired traits, increase crop yield, and confer resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses. Molecular tools like CRISPR-Cas9, TALENs, and ZFNs act as molecular scissors, allowing for the targeted alteration of specific DNA sequences with unprecedented accuracy. This technology allows scientists to introduce or enhance beneficial traits in crops, including disease resistance, improved nutrition, and drought tolerance. Horticulture is a critical component of global food production and human well-being as it involves cultivation and management of plants for food, aesthetics, and medicinal purposes. Horticultural crops comprising fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and medicinal herbs, not only contribute to nutritional needs of populations worldwide but also enhance the visual appeal of our surroundings. However, productivity and quality of horticultural crops face significant constraints due to challenges such as biotic and abiotic stresses, limited genetic variation, and increasing demands for improved traits. Plant breeders have employed various techniques, such as hybridization, selection, and genetic manipulation, to enhance horticultural crops. These approaches have contributed to improved yield, disease resistance, and other desirable traits.

With the advent of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-associated protein9 (CRISPR/Cas9) genome editing, a fast and efficient new breeding technology, precision breeding in vegetable crops has become possible now. Several genes have been edited and functionally characterized using CRISPR/Cas9 in tomato for multiple traits such as plant type, floral morphology, fruit traits, disease resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance. The CRISPR/Cas9 has been proven in successful introgression of de novo domestication of elite traits from wild relatives to cultivated tomato. The progress in CRISPR/Cas9 based improvement in vegetable improvement, has been discussed.
Vegetables are an important source of healthy diet, as they provide essential nutrients including vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, antioxidants and other phytochemicals. Dietary fiber-rich vegetables improve digestion, while also lowering the risk of obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease (Behera et al., 2021). A world vegetable survey showed that around 392 vegetable crops are cultivated worldwide, representing 70 families and 225 genera. Over 97 species of higher plants are being cultivated and consumed as vegetables in India. These crops belong to 20 different families such as Cucurbitaceae (25 crops), Fabaceae (16 crops), Brassicaceae (12 crop) and Solanaceae (6 crops). The world’s total vegetables production was 1,155 million tonnes in 2021 where China ranks first with a total production of 600 million tonnes, accounting for 52.18% of the total world production. The top 5 countries (China, India, the United States of America, Turkey and Vietnam) account for 70.36% of total world’s production. As far as India is concerned,  it is the largest producer of ginger (2.23 million tonnes) and okra (6.47 million tonnes) in the world, while ranking 2nd in potato (54.23 million tonnes), dry onion (26.64 million tonnes), cauliflower and broccoli (9.25 million tonnes), brinjal (12.87 million tonnes) and cabbage (9.56 million tonnes) (FAO 2023).

Fruits contribute to nutritional security and thus are an important part of food system. To meet the future demand, development of varieties with improved yield and quality is the focus of researchers involved in fruit breeding. Though conventional breeding has resulted in the development of improved commercial varieties of different fruit crops, however conventional breeding is time consuming and faces several challenges due to long juvenile phase, highly heterozygous nature of most of the fruit crops. Challenges like changing climate, consumer preference, socio-economic conditions like reduced availability of land, labour and increasing cost of inputs, require fast and efficient methods to develop the varieties to meet the demands, which is not feasible with conventional breeding. Marker assisted breeding has given impetus to breeding efforts in several fruit crops, however it’s use is limited only for the traits controlled by a few major QTLs.
During last few years, enormous genomic resources have been developed for fruit crops using next generation sequencing technology. Such advances in genomic research in many fruit crops have paved the way for precision breeding using genomic assisted breeding (GAB) tools. GAB has helped in characterisation and utilisation of genome resources and using allele variation for cultivar development (Varshney et al. 2021). Advances in sequencing technology and affordability has allowed the genome wide analysis (GWAS) on diversity panels of different fruits resulting in identification of allelic variation associated with the traits of interest. Also, identification of superior alleles of candidate genes makes them amenable to genome editing based precision breeding. Genome wide genotyping and phenotyping offers tools for developing strategy for genomic selection (GS). Genomic selection relies on the prediction of breeding values of tested genotypes based on the large number of markers spread over entire genome. These tools promise to further improve breeding efficiency in fruit crops.

DUS testing is a way of determining whether a newly bred variety differs from existing varieties within the same species, or the characteristics used to establish distinctness are expressed uniformly and that these characteristics do not change over subsequent generations. Testing the distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) of crop varieties is a statutory requirement before varieties can be entered into the Registers of Cultivars (National Lists) and/or granted Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR). In India, Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right (PPV&FR) Act (2001) provides the registration of new variety of plant if it conforms to the criteria of distinctness, uniformity and stability.
Why do we need a DUS test? New (candidate) varieties should be distinct from all other varieties whose existence is a matter of common knowledge, and also sufficiently uniform and stable with respect to the characteristics used to demonstrate distinctness. ‘Common knowledge’ is broadly defined to include all known varieties, i.e. any variety entered into or subject to an application for PBR, varieties grown commercially, held in publicly accessible reference collection, or of which there is a published description (UPOV 2002).
The responsibility for DUS testing of potato varieties in India lies with the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla, which is the national institute for potato research and development. Currently a set of 51 DUS characters in potato are defined by CPRI and being used for distinguishing new variety.

The potential of Vegetable Genetic Resources (VGR) is vast, offering solutions to future challenges such as food and nutritional security. Achieving this requires the identification, collection, conservation, documentation, and utilization of these resources. The introduction and acceptance of improved varieties have resulted in the replacement of numerous landraces and local crop cultivars across various agri-horticultural crops, with a particular impact on vegetables. The alignment of activities related to the management of plant genetic resources at both global and national levels has enhanced the opportunities for utilizing VGR. India possesses a rich diversity of vegetable genetic resources, comprising indigenous and exotic varieties. Information regarding VGR in the Indian region can be accessed through passport data, conservation records, catalogs detailing characterization and evaluation, as well as insights into local vegetable usage, all of which contribute to strengthening these initiatives. This chapter delves into vegetable genetic resources, focusing on economically significant vegetable crops of India, along with regionally important crops, potential species, and their wild relatives, highlighting efforts undertaken at ICAR, NBPGR for its collection conservation, characterization and utilization.

Demand-driven vegetable breeding emphasizes the development of new cultivars based on specific consumer preferences, market demands, and environmental conditions. This approach contrasts with traditional breeding methods that primarily focus on agronomic traits like yield or disease resistance. The importance of demand-driven breeding lies in its ability to align agricultural production with consumer needs and market trends. By directly responding to consumer preferences such as taste, appearance, nutritional content, and culinary characteristics, breeders can create vegetables that are not only commercially viable but also meet consumer expectations. This approach enhances market acceptance and profitability for growers, distributors, and retailers alike. Breeders prioritize demand-driven breeding to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market where consumer preferences can shift quickly. By understanding and responding to these preferences, breeders can develop cultivars that offer distinct advantages over existing varieties, leading to increased market share and improved economic outcomes for stakeholders throughout the supply chain. This chapter provides an understanding on demand-driven vegetable breeding, particularly opportunities, and challenges.

Introduction
Crop production is weather dependent and almost every crop has been affected by the changing climate. The favourable weather may result bumper production sometimes or even complete destruction of crop may take place under severe weather aberrations. The number of events of sudden aberrations is increasing in a cropping period with the gradual climate change in the recent past. It has been recorded too severe in case of perennial crops. Ready to harvest crops have several times been completely destroyed due to thunderstorm or cyclone in coastal regions or even in main land. Thus, Indian agriculture is being impacted by the climatic changes, and its affect is very much visible now (Aggarwal, 2008). Horticulture sector is not escaped from its’ ill affect and new challenges are coming for production (Singh et al., 2021). The role of adaptation strategy has now been felt crucial (Babu et al., 2021; Banerjee et al., 2022) and importance of agro advisory not only protects the crops from such types of risks but also provide guidance to farmers about the right time for activities in crop husbandry (Adak et al., 2018). Issuance for improving water productivity in water limited areas (Adak and Babu, 2024), micronutrient management for nutrient richness and enhanced yield (Adak et al., 2023; Shukla et al., 2020), rejuvenating unproductive orchards (Shukla et al., 2021; Mishra et al., 2007), disease (Misra et al., 2013; Shukla et al., 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021a,b; 2022; Kumari et al., 2021) and insect pest (Gundappa et al., 2016; 2018) management are becoming very crucial and essential for the benefit of growers.

Wild marigold (Tagetes minuta) is also famous as African marigold and mint marigold, valued for its higher content and superior in essential oil quality among all the cultivated species undergenusTagetes. Marigold/Genda (Tagetes species) are mostly grown for scented flowers for utilization in functions all over the world. The flowers and leaves are of different varieties, which are identified by their distinct odouriferous oil.
Origin
It is inhabitant to the grasslands of temperate region in South America and now become widespread throughout the world. In India, it has been customized in the North-West Himalayas up-to an altitudes ranging from1000-2500 meters in H.P., U.P. and J&K. Now-a-days, Tagetes minuta is considered as an extensive weed in South Europe, Africa, South Asia, Australia, and Madagascar (Chalchat et al., 1995). It is found growing naturally as a noxious
weed in the wild and arable farming systems. The high demand of its essential oil may leads into reduction of the wild resources, thus it is essential to start systematic cultivation in sub-tropical to temperate agro-climatic zones all over the world, mainly in the region of Indian subcontinent (Singh et al., 2003).

Introduction
Vetiver/Khas is a fibrous, perennial and aromatic root crop spread over Indian subcontinent. The genus Vetiveria is derived from its Tamil name ‘Vettiver’. It occurred largely in wet and damp environments over marshy lands in south-east Rajasthan and Haryana. Also found in river banks of western, central and northern U.P. up-to 1200 m elevation in the Himalayan foothills, T.N., Karnataka, Kerala and some parts of central India. Besides India, it is also widely grown in Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Haiti, Vietnam and Brazil for its fragrant volatile oil (Guenther, 1972). This species along with its unique xerophytic characteristics of tolerating prolonged drought, also survives under long seasonal flooding; extreme temperature and sustainability over a wide range of soil salinity and alkalinity. The South Indian types are rich in oil percent, but content more of hydrocarbons and less oxygenated constituents, thus inferior to North Indian types having higher percentage of oxygenated compound and very high quality odour value. It belongs to family Graminae or Poaceae.
Uses
• Spongy and fibrous roots are commonly used for making cooler pads, floor mats, door screens emitting sweet fragrance with cooling effect in hot summer season when sprinkled with water as roots retain its delightful odour for a long period.

Introduction
Basil/Tulsi is a popular name given to any aromatic herb that belongs to genus Ocimum and family Lamiaceae (Labiatae). The word ‘basil’ was derived from Greek word ‘Basilica’ which means the royal plant. It comprises over 160 species spread over the tropical, sub-tropical, and warmer part of temperate regions of both the hemisphere ranging from sea level to 2000 m height with their diversity met in West Africa. Tropical Africa has maximum diversity with 59 species, followed by sub-tropical region of South Africa with 19 species and India with 9 species only.

Among flowers, the rose enjoys the greatest adorable position over the world. In real sense, rose almost hypnotised the man most by its colour and fragrance. Apart from its aesthetic value, the roses are of high economic benefits, and religious significant. Besides, it finds it place in art and culture from times immemorial. The rose thus merits pride of place as the ‘Queen of flowers’.
Origin
The damask rose is originated in ancient Persia (now Iran), and later on spreading over Europe and Northern Africa. Further, widespread farming of R. damascena for rose oil manufacturing began in Turkey and Bulgaria. Many countries of the world grow scented roses for extraction of the volatile essential oil. The genus Rosa grows wild in many parts of the temperate and sub-temperate regions. The major growing countries are Bulgaria, France, Italy, Turkey, Russia, China and India. Bulgaria is the principle European country for supply of rose oil to the world market. Among different species, Rosa centifolia Linn. is largely grown in France and Italy, whereas Rosa
damascena Mill. in Turkey, Bulgaria, Russia and Persia. Rosa damascena Mill. was first introduced successfully in middle east countries during 1680, resulting in the establishment of entire area as ‘Valley of flowers’. It belongs to family rosaceae.

Patchouli is known as patcholi in Hindi, patche tene in annada, patchapan or patcha in Marathi, patchilla in Malayalam, pacchilai in Tamil. It is a hardy perennial herb well-adjusted against the hot and humid climatic situations. Patchouli is an aromatic herb of immense importance due to presence of essential oil extracted from shade dried leaves. It possessed a powerful sweetness and spicy fragrance. Patchouli has tremendous business potential owning to its unique fragrance properties in the global market. Its oil easily blends with other essential oils giving strong base as fixative properties in preventing evaporation and promoting tenacity. Worldwide, Indonesia is considered as the chief patchouli oil producer.
Origin
Pogostemon cablin Benth. is natural to Philippines but also found growing wild in many countries of South Asian region. The word ‘cablin’ is derived from ‘cabalam’, a local name in the Philippines. Presently, it is not only cultivated on commercial scale in India but also in Indonesia, Singapore, China, Malaysia, Brazil, West Africa, Seychelles, Vietnam and West Indies.

Introduction
Palmarosa/Roshagrass (Cymbopogon martinii var. motia): It is a tall perennial tuffed hedge grown naturally as well as commercially in the old world tropics and sub-tropics of India. It occurs in open scrub forests in parts of MP, Maharashtra and AP, where it is commercially collected and distilled for its oil. It is also sporadically found in Karnataka, TN and part of UP. The herb along with flowering tops and foliage, on distillation yield a colourless to pale yellow essential oil with sweet scented\ rose-like aroma, containing high geraniol; and used in cosmetics, toiletry and perfumery industry. Concerted efforts during last two decades to develop better cultural practices and development of improved varieties, the area has expanded all over the central, western and southern states of India. This crop is commercially grown in Indonesia, East African countries, Cuba and Brazil. At present, the total oil production is estimated to be around 300 tonnes annually, and two-third (200t) of it comes from cultivation.
Ginger grass (Cymbopogon martinii Stapf. var. sofia): This is another form of roshagrass. Its distribution is overlapping in forests with the ture palmarosa grass, although it has preference for more moist-substratum. Both the forms are morphologically identical in field except their odour when leaves are crushed. Ginger grass has dense tuft and more luxuriant growth, but produces shorter inflorescence and more tolerant to the stagnating water. It crosses freely with palmarosa in nature, producing many intermediary forms.

Introduction
Lemongrass grows widely in many tropical and subtropical parts of Asia, Africa and America. East Indian or true lemongrass (C. flexuosus) is indigenous to India and large variability occurs in the Western Ghats comprising Kerala, Karnataka and T.N., besides Sikkim and A.P. Its cultivation and distillation of oil started first in Kerala and now grown in Assam, Maharashtra and U.P. The strong lemon like odour of the oil of the grass is responsible for its nomenclature. Predominantly, there are two types of lemongrass under cultivation, viz., the East Indian or Cochin or Malabar grass (Cymbopogon flexuosus) with superior oil quality (75-85% citral) and preferred by the industry.
The other West Indian or American lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus (D.C.) Stapf. is mainly cultivated in West Indian islands, Guatemala, Brazil, Mexico and Madagaskar; and comora islands, Thailand, Bangladesh and China. It has lower citral content and lower solubility in 70% alcohol. It is indigenous to India and spread over Western Ghats, comprising Kerala, Karnataka, TN, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Maharashtra, parts of Uttar Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana.
Besides, a separate culture called Jammu lemongrass (Cymbopogon pendulus) is another indigenous species found wildly growing in West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam and M.P. It also has high citral content, but cultivated to a limited extent in parts of Jammu in northern India.

Genus Curcuma belongs to the Zingiberaceae family, and containing of about 122 species. These are grown profusely in Asian countries including, India, China, and Southeast Asia, Northern Australia and New Guinea. Like ginger, it is also the popular herb of this family for the utilization of its underground rhizomatous stem by human beings. Botanically it is named as Curcuma longa L. Its bright yellow spicy powder is got from the dried rhizome is termed turmeric powder, which is the final product of this herb. In addition to this curcumin bio-active compound is also extracted by cursing rhizomes of turmeric. The plants turmeric are considered to be a hybrid and sterile leaving vegetative propagation from rhizome as the single mode of propagation. India is recognized as the power house of turmeric production. Along with us, our neighbours in South East and Eastern region, including Malaysia, Thailand, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Philippines, Indonesia and even China are considered major producers.
Floral Biology
All species of Curcuma genus have almost alike flowering spikes that mainly originate from the topmost region of the rhizome (pseudo-stem) or sometimes on a separate stem directly from the rhizome. These two stems differ onlyin the inner portion of rhizome, which differ in colour, i.e., creamy, white, orange, yellow, bluish-green, blue, and sometime black also. The rhizomes exhibit commercial value as a medicine as well as food spice. Curcuma longa L. (Syn. Curcuma domestica Val.), is the common turmeric. It is the top ranking herb based on its economic potential among all the members of this genus and cultivated in India about 150,000 hectares.

Introduction
Geranium is also known as cranesbill, scented geranium/rose geranium. It is adaptable over a wide range of soil conditions and drought tolerant. Being perennial aromatic herb, it is cultivated for rose scented essential oil extracted from leaves and tender shoots. The oil thus obtained is also called pelargonium oil or rose-geranium oil. The oil is of varied colour from colourless to pale yellowbrown or greenish. The genus Pelargonium belongs to the family Geraniaceae.
Origin
Geranium is native to sub-tropical southern Africa, and the most popular of bedding and green-house plants. The genus Pelargonium consists of about 600 species, which are annual, biennial, and perennials found in Cape province of South Africa.
Botany
The cultivated geraniums may belong to herbaceous to woody with thick fleshy leaves of round to lobed shape and deep cut. The flowers are present in terminal clusters with varying colours from white to pink, deep red and violet. Cultivated species are hybrids, having double flowers of mixed colours.
