There has been increasing demand of plant based raw materials for manufacturing pharmaceuticals, flavours, fragrances, cosmetics & other related products. Among these, ginsenosides, taxol, artemisinin
etc. are some of the biomolecules used in making drugs with great demand in the market. Aromatic plants are an integral component of research and development in the pharmaceutical and aroma industry.
In India, the annual growth in this sector is around 15-20 percent. There are approximately 7500 plant species of medicinal value, including aromatic plants having significant scope for phyto-pharmaceuticals and cosmetic & perfumery industry. Because raw materials are still harvested from wild growing populations in the forests, introduction of these plants in agriculture is need of the hour for further research efforts to bring them into commercial cultivation as these plants also promise large benefits to farmers, if brought under cultivation. This can be achieved by screening germplasm from natural flora to select suitable genotypes for sustainable use in the prevalent cropping system.
Plant tissue culture technically known as micro-propagation and broadly defined as a collection of methods used to grow large number of plants in vitro (in an aseptic and closely controlled environment). This technique is effective because almost all plant cells are totipotent, meaning thereby that each cell possesses the genetic information and cellular machinery to generate an entire organism. Micro-propagation, therefore, can be used to produce large number of plants, which are genetically identical to parent plants as well as to one another (Raveen et al., 1999).

1. Introduction

Present day botanic gardens have their origins from medicinal plant gardens established during the middle of the 16^th century meant for the cultivation of medicinal plants. Therefore, the roots of botany are traced from the medicine. The modern botanic gardens are considered as an ordered collection of plants, assembled primarily for scientific and educative purposes. They serve as the living repositories and offer excellent opportunities for ex-situ conservation, taxonomy, and studies on various other botanical aspects as mentioned below:

Saline agroecological systems are found in various regions worldwide, including coastal areas, arid and semi-arid regions, and areas affected by improper irrigation practices. These systems are characterized by high soil salinity levels, which can have detrimental effects on crop growth, nutrient availability and plant water uptake (Rai et al., 2020). Addressing these challenges requires specialized knowledge and tailored strategies to ensure sustainable agricultural practices in such environments (Dagar et al., 2019;
Sethi et al., 2016). Farm advisory and resource management services play a critical role in assisting farmers in saline agroecological systems by providing expert guidance, information dissemination, capacity building, and policy support (Adak et al., 2020). Farm advisory can play a crucial role in helping farmers understand the intricacies of saline agroecological systems, including the causes of soil salinity, its effects on crop performance, and the necessary strategies for managing these challenges effectively. Farm advisory can assist farmers in selecting suitable crop varieties that exhibit tolerance to high salinity levels. This requires comprehensive knowledge of salt-tolerant crops and and nutritional needs. Providing information on the performance and market
demand of different crop varieties enables farmers to make informed decisions about crop selection, optimizing productivity in saline agroecological systems (Kumar et al., 2020; Singh et al., 2021). It can offer guidance on crop management practices tailored to saline environments by providing recommendations on irrigation scheduling, water management techniques, and appropriate fertilization strategies to minimize salt accumulation and maximize crop yields. Introduction
Farm advisories have played a key role in transforming India’s agriculture, helping the country shift from a food deficit to a surplus nation. The Indian public agricultural extension system has been instrumental in this transformation through Green Revolution in the 1960s, but by the end of the 1970s, its role had started to decline. Critics argued that the system had become a monolithic organization without clear objectives (Babu et al., 2013). According to NSSO data, in 2004, public extension services in India, including the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, extension workers, field demonstrations and study tours, reached to less than ten percent of farmers. Instead, farmers relied mostly on other progressive farmers (17%) and input dealers (13%) for information, while mass media including radio, television and newspaper played a significant role reaching to more than thirty percent farmers (Mkhize and Zhou, 2012; Meena et al., 2022a). One of the major constraints in agricultural extension services (AES) in the country is the shortage of extension staff. According to a report, in 2012-13, a single extension functionary served 1,162 operationalholdings, whereas the recommended ratio was 1:400 in hilly areas, 1:750 in irrigated areas, and 1:1000 in rain-fed areas. Input dealers often provide manipulated information specific to the crops grown by farmers, affecting their decision-making process.

Horticulture crops hold significant importance for their economic, nutritional, environmental, and aesthetic contributions. They contribute to agricultural GDP, create employment opportunities, and provide income for farmers and other stakeholders along the value chain. Horticultural crops often have highvalue market demand, leading to increased profitability for farmers and rural communities. The horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and medicinal, spices are rich sources of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They contribute to a balanced and nutritious diet, promoting good
health and preventing various diseases. Consumption of horticultural crops is linked to reduced risks of chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain types of cancer. These crops have environmental benefits. They contribute to biodiversity conservation by providing habitats for various species and supporting beneficial insects and pollinators. Additionally, horticultural practices such as agroforestry, crop diversification, and organic farming methods can enhance soil health, reduce erosion, promote water conservation, and mitigate climate change impacts. Adak and Pandey (2018) emphasised soil management of horticultural crops for attaining food and nutritional security of farm women. Babu et al. (2022) explained scientific interventions for enhancing productivity and profitability of farmers’ engaged in horticultural sector while Gundappa et al. (2016c) recommended management protocols for effective controls of mango hoppers to growers. Even, digital solutions are now-a-days is being tried to improve economic prosperity of fruit growers (Verma and Adak, 2021). Horticulture crops contribute to food security by diversifying thefood supply. They provide an array of options beyond staple crops, ensuring a varied and nutritious diet for individuals and communities.

1. Introduction

Agriculture in India is livelihood for a majority of the population and can never be underestimated. Increasing population, increasing average income and globalisation effects in India will increase demand for quantity, quality and nutritious food, and variety of food. Therefore, pressure on decreasing available cultivable land to produce more quantity, variety and quality of food will keep on increasing. India’s food security depends on producing cereal crops, as well as increasing its production of fruits, vegetables and milk to meet the demands of a growing population with rising incomes. To reach world-wide food security, improved food production and food productivity, we need to approve innovative and futuristic advances and technologies to improve crop cultivation, yield and productivity.

Introduction

Plant hormones (also known as phytohormones) are chemicals that regulate plant growth, which are termed ‘plant growth substances’. Plant hormones are signal molecules produced within the plant and occur in extremely low concentrations. Plant hormones are small, simple molecules of diverse chemical composition: indole compounds, terpenes, adenine derivatives, steroids, aliphatic hydrocarbons and derivatives of carotenoids or fatty acids. In the context of rooted habit and iterative mode of growth, plant hormones are not produced in specialized glands, but in most parts of the plants. Plant hormones are required in minicule quantities and their concentrations at sites of activity are precisely regulated. Changes in hormones concentration and tissue sensitivity mediate a whole range of development processes in plants, many of which involve interaction with environmental factors. First five hormones discovered from the plants were gibberellins, abscisic acid, cytokinins, indole-3-acetiv acid, and ethylene as well as some compound shown more recently to have a regulatory role in plant development, namely, brassinosteroids, polyamines, jasmonic acid and salicylic acid.

ABSTRACT

Banana is one of the most accepted and versatile fruit crops across the globe and in Kerala, it is the most important economically profitable fruit crop grown, mainly by small and marginal farmers, providing a vital source of income. However, the productivity of this crop is very much reduced due to various diseases of which rhizome rot disease is an important one. In recent years, this disease has become a serious problem to the commercial cultivation of banana in southern states of India like Kerala, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu.In Kerala the disease incidence is found to be nearly 30% and it will soon become cent percent if unnoticed since the disease is more seen in banana cultivated in paddy fields, and the area under the cultivation of banana in paddy fields in Kerala is rapidly increasing. The disease is caused by a gram negative bacterium, Erwinia carotovora. Developing an integrated management package involving biocontrol methods is the only remedy for managing the disease within the financial limits of the marginal farmers. With this intension a pot culture experiment was conducted to study the inhibitory effect of different biocontrol agents and botanicals in the incidence of the disease after testing their efficacy under in vitro cond itions. The results revealed that the biocont rol agent Pseudomonas flourescens (commercial preparation @ 7g /plant) was found to effective in managing the disease. The co- efficient of infection was found to be13.9% as against the control pot where it was 56.24%. With regard to the growth parameters also, the treatment with this biocontrol agent gave superior results. Thus it was proved that Pseudomonas flourescens (commercial preparation @ 7g /plant) could be successfully utilized in the integrated disease management making it cost effective.

Agriculture is the main stay of Indian economy as more than 70 per cent of the people of India are dependent upon this avocation and allied disciplines for their livelihood. Even today, at the dawn of 21st century, the Indian agriculture has continued to be the backbone of our national economy, representing country’s one third of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Thus, farming families consisting of men, women, boys and girls known as the pillars of our agriculture, constitute backbone of the nation. The support and contributions made by the rural women in agriculture, constituting 55-66 percent of farm work force (Singh et al., 2012) are, however, not less than those performed by the men, and therefore they become spine of the rural economy. In fact, women’s role in the economy has been underestimated and their work in agriculture has long been invisible and unappreciated, if we compare the women’s work participation rate of some of the selected countries like Indonesia, Bangladesh, China. Pakistan and Sri Lanka, we find that India ranks second in position (22.7 %) after Indonesia (33.4%).

Carrot, radish, turnip and beet root are major root crops grown in India. In addition, root crops like rutabaga, parsnip, parsley, chervil and celeriac are grown in a limited scale in different parts of the world. There are several other roots and modified underground plant parts that grow in forests and consumed by tribes, but they are not commercially cultivated. Carrot, radish, turnip and beet root are generally consumed as cooked vegetables or fresh salads or as pickled vegetables.

5.1. Carrot

Carrots belong to the Umbelliferae family, named after the umbrella-like f lower clusters that plants in this family produce. As such, carrots are related to parsnips, fennel, parsley, anise, caraway, cumin and dill. Carrot, Daucus carota L. is believed have been primarily originated in Afghanistan, South western Asia and Mediterranean region. Daucus carota ssp. Carota is the most common wild form in Europe and South West Asia, and the present day cultivated carrots have most probably originated from this sub-species.

Haryana, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Assam are the major producers of carrot in India.

Cultivars/Varieties: Varieties with long, orange coloured and smooth roots are preferred in India. Both indigenous and exotic varieties having different root length, shape and colour are grown. Temperate or European type varieties are Nantes, Half long, Early Nantes, Chantenay, Chaman, Pusa Yamadagni and Ooty-1, which require low temperature of 4-8°C for flowering. Tropical or Asiatic type varieties do not require low temperature for flowering and can be grown in plains also. The varieties belonging to this group are Pusa Kesar, Pusa Meghali and Hisar Gairic. Some varieties like Gold King, Indian Kuroda and Super Kuroda are also marketed by private seed companies.

Diagnostic Symptoms
• A white, powdery fungal growth on the upper, lower or both leaves and shoots.
• There may be discolouration of the affected parts of the leaf, and heavily infected young leaves can be curled and distorted.
• Mildew growth may also be found on the stems, flower stalks, calyces and petals.
• Heavily infected flower buds frequently fail to open properly.
• Mildew growth on stems and flower stalks is usually thicker and more mat-like than that on the leaves.
• Mildew growth on all parts may turn browner as it ages (Fig-1).

Hard Red scale: Aonidiella aurantii :Diaspididae

Both adults and young scales suck the sap from the stem and cause spot yellowing and loss of vigour of the plant. Infested shoots bear reddish brown encrustations of the scale and in case of severe damage the shoots dry up.

All varieties of rose are susceptible to this disease. It is an important disease of rose which causes a sharp reduction in number and size of fl owers.

Rosemary, botanically classified as Rosmarinus officinalis L. of the family Lamiaceae (Labiatae), is widely recognized as a culinary herb. When subjected to steam distillation, the leaves and flowering tops yield an essential oil. The name “rosemary” is believed to be associated with the Virgin Mary, as reflected in one of its Spanish names, romero, meaning “pilgrim’s flower.” This association further underscores its connection to the Virgin Mary. Dried rosemary leaves comprise approximately 5.7% moisture, 4.5% protein, 17.4% fat, 19% crude fibre, 47.4% carbohydrates, and 6.0% ash. Additionally, they are rich in minerals and vitamins, containing 1.5% calcium, 0.70% phosphorus, 0.03% iron, 0.004% sodium, 1.0% potassium, 175 IU of vitamin A per 100 g, 0.51 mg of vitamin B, 0.04 mg of another B-vitamin, 1.0 mg of niacin, and 61.3 mg of vitamin C per 100 g, with a caloric value of 440 calories per 100 g.

Natural rubber, cis-l,4 polyisoprene, produced in the milky cytoplasm (latex) of specialized cells called laticifers in certain plants is one of most important biological macromolecules, which is used as an industrial raw material for the manufacture of a variety of products. Natural rubber is found in the latex of over 2000 species of plants belonging to 311 genera under 79 families. However, Hevea brasiliensis, also known as Para rubber tree after the Brazilian port of Para, is the only commercial source of natural rubber mainly because of its abundance in latex, quality and convenience of harvesting. Hevea was first used as a source of rubber by the French.

The natural habitat of rubber (Heavea brasiliensis) is rain forests of the Amazon basin, situated within 5° North and South at altitudes below 200m. The climate of this region is equatorial monsoon type characterized by mean
monthly temperature by 25 to 28°C, well distributed rainfall and no marked dry weather. Though it is originated in the Amazon basin, it is now predominantly grown in the tropics where an equatorial monsoon type climate prevails. Regions between 8°N and 10°S which includes Indonesian archipelago, Malaysia, southern part of Sri Lank  and some other Islands, are better suited to rubber cultivation. The production of natural rubber in the country was 8.65 lakh MT in 2008–09, registering a 4.74 per cent growth compared to the previous year. India is the fourth largest producer of natural rubber with a share of eight per cent in the World after Thailand, Indonesia and Malaysia and the fourth largest consumer of natural rubber after China, USA and Japan. Among the rubber growing countries in the World, India occupies a pride place with the top most position in productivity (Table 9.1). The productivity of natural rubber (NR) in India in 2009–10 was 1784 kg/ha. In 1950–51, it was 284 kg/ha. The growth achieved in terms of the productivity of natural rubber is 628 per cent. Several tropical indigenous fruits have still remained underexploited due to the lack of awareness of their potential, market demand and low and erratic bearing in many cases. Though wild and domesticated diversity is composed of nearly 3000 tropical fruit species, only a few are cultivated on large scale (Vietmeyer, 1990;Pareek et al., 1998). These species (approximately 600 tropical and subtropical) are better known in their areas of diversity and have not yet been utilized to their full potential inspite of their high economic value. There exists a very rich diversity of fruits across the tropical and sub-tropical regions of the world, with more than 500 species of fruits estimated to be found in Southeast Asia alone. The South and Southeast Asia represents above 300 species of native minor fruits (Arora, 1995). These species are being used by local people as minor fruits as well as for medicinal purposes as described in the Indian system of medicine. If properly harnessed, this diversity has great potential as a source of food besides meeting multipurpose needs of the local communities (Pareek et al., 1998).

Borer pests cause significant yield losses and are one of the most serious production constraints in tropical vegetable production. For instance, eggplant fruit and shoot borer (EFSB), Leucinodes orbonalis Guenée (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) reduces yield as much as 70% (Dhandapani et al., 2003). Tomato fruit borer, Helicoverpa armigera Hubner (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) causes about 5 to 55% loss in almost all the tomato producing areas in the world (Kashyap and Batra, 1987). Up to 80% yield losses have been reported in various vegetable and grain legumes due to legume pod borer (LPB), Maruca vitrata F. (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) damage (Singh et al., 1990; Sharma, 1998; Gressel et al., 2004; Hammig et al., 2008; Zahid et al., 2008). Due to higher yield losses, growers tend to apply extremely high quantities of chemical pesticides to control borer pests on vegetable crops. Because the borer larvae are exposed on external plant parts only for a brief time after hatching, the window for effective pesticide application is very brief; vegetable farmers spray throughout the growing season, but without satisfactory results. A survey of pesticide use in Bangladesh indicated that farmers spray up to 180 times with chemical insecticides during a year to protect their eggplant crop against EFSB (SUSVEGAsia, 2007). Pesticide application often exceeded 50 sprays per tomato crop season in south India (Nagaraju et al., 2002). In Bangladesh, country bean (Lablab purpureus) is being sprayed at weekly or biweekly intervals—sometimes every day—to control LPB (Hoque et al., 2001). On average, farmers used 10-24 kg/ha of pesticides in cabbage and cauliflower in India to manage the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella (Lepidoptera: Plutellidae) and other pests (Weinberger and Srinivasan, 2009).

Safety is a primary concern regarding traditional and complementary therapies. There are two aspects of safety evaluations. First, to ensure that the right quality of material and apt possesses are used from sourcing to marketing; and second, there is no contamination, adulteration or spiking. Few studies have reported adulteration with steroids in some traditional Chinese dermatological preparations. In an analysis of Chinese herbal creams prescribed for dermatological conditions, Keane et al. found that eight of eleven creams analyzed contained steroids194. Spiking with corticostreoinds has been observed in some market preparations claimed to be useful in the treatment of arthritis and asthma195. Recently, Saper et al. from Harvard Medical School have reported heavy metal content of Ayurvedic herbal preparations and have recommended mandatory toxic heavy metal testing196. There have been few reports of heavy metal toxicity following traditional medicine use197,198. Such studies are important and needed, however they are more related to the quality control failures of the mass manufacturing activities. Often they are wrongly used to limit the use of TM. In reality, such a QC failure should not be considered as a general negative notion to create a bias against TM. We certainly need effective QC and regulation of herbal medicines, without limiting public access to these preparations and ensuring public interest and constituting restrictive trade practice.

For a researcher, laboratory is another home where he/she spends much time every day. As we take care of cleanliness, safety, and design of our home, we must take care on these aspects of laboratory too. It is the responsibility of the laboratory personnel to ensure cleanliness/safety of the laboratory. Since every laboratory chemical and equipment have the potential to cause harms if not used with appropriate precautions. Hence, as a laboratory user, it is our responsibility to follow the basic safety/biosafety rules and regulations set up by the Principal Investigator of the laboratory, Institutional Biosafety Committee, as well as by other regulatory authorities, if any. We must be aware of the general/personal protective measures, cleanliness and laboratory waste disposal prior to joining a research laboratory. In this chapter we will briefly discuss about personal safety, chemical safety, cleanliness, waste disposal, etc.

A. Personal Safety

1. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is special arrangement to protect the worker from specific hazards because of using a hazardous substance. PPE does not reduce or eliminate the hazard, but protects the wearer from exposure to hazardous material. PPE should not be reused or brought outside the laboratory as these might increase the risk of spread hazardous material or contamination. Used PPE must be kept inside the laboratory in a designated waste storage area adjacent to the work area.

Saffron (Kesar) comprises the dried, tri-lobed stigmas of Crocus sativus L., a bulbous perennial of the Iridaceae family. Saffron, one of the oldest and costliest spices in the world, is often confused with meadow saffron (Colchicum automnale L., family Liliaceae) or safflower, also called bastard saffron (Carthamus tinctorius L., family Compositae), which are sometimes used as adulterants. Producing one pound of saffron requires harvesting 75,000 flowers by hand to obtain 2,25,000 to 5,00,000 dried stigmas. Saffron is characterized by its vibrant yellow-red colour, a distinct, intense aroma, and a slightly bitter, exotic taste.

Saffron, the legendary crop of Kashmir, India, is an important food adjunct, that is, food flavorant and food colorant, and, is also reputed to possess several medicinal properties. The recorded accounts of saffron cultivation in Kashmir dates back to AD 550, nearly four centuries earlier than its recorded cultivation in Spain by the Arabs around AD 961. The saffron fields, from mid-October to early November, when saffron plants are in full bloom, on a moonlit night, present a wonderful sight and a good source of fascination to many tourists. But, surprisingly, it’s cultivation in Jammu and Kashmir in India does not seem to be based on scientific research and the growers have some superstitions, notions and methods of their own. Therefore, saffron-growing areas are those very localities where they have been since ancient times (550 AD), and is also their out-dated methods of curing, drying and packing, which can be improved considerably. Over 100 species of saffron genus Crocus are distributed worldwide, but, only Crocus sativus has received some attention and is cultivated in several countries. Saffron consists of dried tri-lobed stigmas of Crocus sativus, which is a bulbous perennial with globular corms. The plant is only 15-25cm tall, native of Southern Europe and cultivated in the Mediterranean countries, in particular, Spain, Austria, France, Greece, besides England, Turkey, India (in Jammu and Kashmir State, an Indian Union territory), and The People’s Republic of Iran. It is also grown in the Orient. Description and Distribution
Sage is the dried leaf of the of the plant Salvia officinalis Linn. which is a member of the mint family. It grows and is also cultivated in Yugoslavia, Italy, Albania, Turkey, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus, England, Canada, and, the USA. It is also grown in several other European countries. It is native of the Mediterranean region. It is a hardy and a variable sub-shrub, and is often cultivated as a spice and for medicinal purposes. Stems are shrubby, white and woolly, 30-cm tall; the leaves are greyish green, aromatic, entire, petiolate, oblong, 7-8 cm long, base narrowed or spear shaped or round. On drying, the leaves turn silvery grey, and they have soft velvety texture. The flowers are blue, purple or white in simple racemes. The cultivation of Sage or “Garden Sage” has been tried for its essential oil in Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir State of India), which is currently being imported for use in perfumery and soap industries. The plants are reported to have done quite well. It should be propagated in India to save foreign exchange. The cultivation of Sage in the Dalmatian region of Yugoslavia, is considered by the trade to be the best in quality, and the product derived from the cultivated plants in this region is rated the next in preference. The odor is strong, fragrant and aromatic, and the taste is aromatic, warm, somewhat astringent and a little bitter. Other product such as Spanish Sage and Greek sage derived from the other species of Salvia are used either as a substitute or adulterant of the genuine product.
Area, Production and Trade
No reliable published information is available on both area and production of Sage in India or in the world, at large. However, the available information on the international trade of Sage is summarized as follows:

Pseudarthira viscida is an important plant in the Indian conventional system of medicine. It is known as salaparni in Sanskrit, belongs to the Fabaceae family, and is distributed in peninsular India and Srilanka. It is among the dasamoola, a combination of roots of ten medicinal plants. It is used as a medicine for the treatment of various diseases due to its versatile nature and it is also an essential ingredient of various ayurvedic formulations such as Surasadi Thailam,Sudarsanasava, Balajeerakadhi Kashayam,Brihatyadi Kashayam, Surasadi Kashayam,Brahmarasayana. Pseudarthria viscida is a herbal plant that exhibits pharmacological andtherapeutic properties. It is widely used in ayurveda alone or poly-herbal formulations to treat various diseases. The whole plant is known for antipyretic, analgesic, antioxidant and anti-fungal effects. It is commercially and extensively used to treat tuberculosis, hemorrhoids, blood disorders, tumors, diabetes, hyperthermia and bronchitis. The root is the economic part, which alleviates tridoshas, namely vata, pitta, andcoupha. The roots are with thermogenic, astringent, emollient, digestive, febrifuge andcardiotonic. Majorchemical compounds present in the roots aregallic acid, caffeic acid, rutin, quercetin, ferulicacid and phenolic compounds and also reported with proteins, flavonoids and leucopelargonidin. Roots are
well known for anthelmintic,anti-diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties. Decoction of the root used against heart diseases, rheumatism, asthma and piles. Pseudarthria viscida is becoming extinct from nature, and its number has been reduced drastically. Due to the limited availability of Pseudarthria viscida, which is substituted by other leguminous trifoliate plant species such as Desmodiumpulchellum and Uraria rufescens. There for, it is put in the red list category and the plant requires proper management practices to exploit its therapeutic potential in the treatment of various diseases.

Sapota is a hardy, evergreen small tree belonging to the family Sapotaceae. It is known botanically as Manilkara zapota van Royen (syns. M. achras Fosb., M. zapotilla Gilly; Achras sapota L., A. zapota L.; Sapota achras Mill.). Sapota, sapodilla, chiku is a hardy tropical fruit tree. In India, it is mainly cultivated for its delicious fruits. The sapodilla is believed native to Yucatan and possibly other nearby parts of southern Mexico, as well as northern Brazil and Northeastern Guatemala. But now its cultivation is extensive in India (Morton, 1987).

Sapota, Manilkara zapota commonly called Chickoo is a popular tropical winter fruit cultivated widely in Gujarat, West Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu. In north, its cultivation is seen across Jammu to Dehradun. Very few insect pests infest Sapota, the details of which are given hereunder:

This is a pest of major concern in Chickoo cultivation in India. The eggs are oval and pale yellow in colour which change to reddish brown near hatching. The caterpillar is pinkish in appearance and bears two longitudinal dorsolateral lines. The full fed larva measures 25 mm in length. The newly formed light green pupa changes to reddish brown in the later stage. The adult is a greyish moth having hooked antennae (Plate 10e) bears two vertical lines on the forewing whereas, the hind wings

Rauvolfia serpentina, also spelled as Rauwolfia, is indeed a vital plant in traditional Indian medicine. It has been used in folk medicine for centuries to treat conditions like snake and insect bites, malaria, dysentery, and more. This plant is deeply rooted in Indian culture, mentioned in Hindu manuscripts as far back as 1000 BCE. It's also known by various names, including Indian snake root, devil pepper, serpentine wood, sarpagandha, and chandrika. Botanically, it belongs to the family Apocynaceae, with the genus Rauvolfia comprising 74 species. Unfortunately, Rauvolfia serpentina is listed as endangered due to over-exploitation and habitat loss, emphasizing the need for conservation and sustainable use to ensure its availability for future generations.
Origin and distribution
The distribution of R. serpentina is very wide, is occurrence is sporadic. The plant commonly grows scattered and close to each other. They are widely distributed in the Sub Himalayan tract from Himachal Pradesh to Sikkim and Bhutan, Eastern and Western Ghats, in some parts of central India. Beyond India the plant is distributed in Bangladesh, Malaysia, Thailand, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, and Burma.

Brownish black scale infests lower surface of leaves along with mid ribs and mid veins.They also cover petioles and tender shoots.  Due to draining of sap, leaves turn yellow and drop, plants become stunted.

Both possess a pronounced thyme-like odor and flavor. And, both are employed in culinary preparations. The oil of the two plants is closely related in chemical composition. The oil can be obtained by steam distillation of the herb. The dried leaves and flowering tops derived from S.hortensis constitute winter Savory of commerce. The best quality of savory comprises of dried leaves only. S.hortensis constitutes summer Savory. Savory is an erect pubescent annual herb, 20-30 cm in height with pinkish branches, fund in Kashmir State of India. Leaves are oblong – linear or lanceolate with deep-pitted glands on both sides. Flowers are small auxiliary cymes. It grows in Southern France, Germany, Spain, and other parts of Europe, also in England, Canada and the USA. The dried leaves are brownish-green in color, up to 10 mm in length. The odor is strong, warm and highly aromatic; the taste is somewhat sharp and camphoraceous. It is marketed both in whole and ground form. Satureia hortensis Linn., the summer Savory or Garden type, is largely cultivated, although it also grows wild, to some extent. An annual, it is less developed than Satureia montana. Its stalks are herbaceous, covered with soft and linear leaves. The branches frequently are reddish in color. Flowers of the Garden Sage are whitish, dotted with red, growing in a bouquet from the summit of the branches. Satureia montana Linn., the winter Savory, as the French call it “Poivre Diane” grows wild on sunny and calcareous and hill-side of Southern France, especially in the Alpes-Maritimes. Comparing the inclination and ability of different regulatory agencies to ban or eliminate pesticides that have the most potential for harm to humans and the environment can provide a glimpse into the effectiveness of each nation’s pesticide regulatory laws and oversight.

In the backdrop of a predominantly agrarian economy, India has made tremendous advances in modern agriculture to meet both the food and nutritional security. In recent years, horticulture has assumed great importance mainly to augment nutritional security and secondarily as a highly cost-effective, remunerative and eco-friendly enterprise having vast export potential. To meet the challenges of research and development, tracer techniques have added the much needed fillip as they can be ingeniously applied to resolve issues which are not ordinarily possible using conventional techniques.

Heifers are future cows of the herd. Production and reproduction performance of cows depends on the care and management during calf and heifer stage. Rearing period of heifers can be divided into two stages, viz. from weaning to first service and service to calving.

Care of calf before birth

During the last 2-3 months of gestation the fetus grows rapidly. Calf draws a significant quantity of nutrients from the mothers system. It has to be replenished by additional feeding of the cow. A cow should be fed well-balanced ration for maintenance.

Introduction

Modern life style has taken the fitness out of the men. In ancient times, our life was labour oriented, whereas now we have lots of gadgetry to support our day to day living, thus making our life least labour oriented and we are now more susceptible to diseases diabetes, blood pressure and asthma were, until recently, associated with rich people only, however, these have now become common in urban and even rural areas irrespective of social status and age. The minimum physical exercise, coupled with carbohydrate and fat rich and fiber free diet and lots of tension in day to day life has given way to these diseases.

Since ages, plants have been mainstay medicinal support either in the form of herbal therapy (Like Ayurveda, Unani) or in the form of isolated active substances as being used in allopathic system of medicine. As per a WHO calculation, at least 80% population, in developing world, is dependent on direct use of medicinal plants.

Many of herbal therapies are very simple to use. It is therefore worthwhile to know about some of medicinal plants available commonly around us. The herbal preparations from these plants may not be dramatically effective to palliate disease, as allopathic medicines do, however, with judicious and regular use, we can avoid conversion of some of simple diseases into a major treatment problem.

It is fortunate that side effects of allopathic medicines have compelled us to reconsider the use of herbal remedies and physical exercise in the form of ‘Yoga’, aerobics or whatever you call it. The arid region of Northwest Rajasthan, although vegetated sparsely, is rich in medicinal plants. Some of the species, which are abound in the extreme arid ecosystem, have unique curative and therapeutic properties and some of them are getting a lot of mileage as nutraceuticals as well.

Introduction

Agriculture is highly dependent on environment, and it’s very difficult to get favourable climate and other conditions for optimum crop growth and development as per crop need. Open field conditions are having a high direct affect of the prevailing weather conditions on crop growth, and also on population dynamics of viruses, fungus, bacteria, insects, etc. With time crops has adopted themselves to specific seasons, but the fast changing climatic conditions happening across the globe has changed the climatic characteristics of a season. This has resulted in untimely rains, high temperature fluctuations and changes in other abiotic and biotic factors in geographically varied locations where it was not supposed to be earlier based on various geographical factors deciding the climatic conditions of that area. Therefore, there is need to develop suitable technologies to sustain these challenges. How to address these issues, can we manipulate the climatic conditions or can we provide protection to the crops against climatic fluctuations and various other related stresses.

ABSTRACT

Chickpea is an important pulse crop of India and most suited to the use of rhizobia for its nitrogen requirement. Mesorhizobium ciceri which interact with the crop are poorly understood. Attempt has been made to select M. ciceri with several beneficial properties. Sixty four isolates of M. ciceri collected from the nodules of several chickpea varieties and mutant lines were screened for their growth properties on nitrogen free medium. Isolates MC59 and MC 18-7 showed normal growth and had ARA values at half level to that of Azotobacter. PCR amplification results suggested the presence of ACC deaminase gene sequence both in Azotobacter and M. ciceri. Invariably all isolates showed the presence of one plasmid in the range of 35 kb to 40 kb size.

Spontaneous contractions of the uterus are controlled and coordinated for various reproductive functions. The non-pregnant uterus facilitates ova and sperm transport, provides adequate embryo placement for implantation, and contributes to the expulsion of menstrual debris through increased contractility, or periods of relative quiescence (Hutchings et al., 2009). Uterine dysmotility has been implicated in the pathogenesis of certain infertilities, implantation failure, endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, and abnormal menstrual events (Kunz and Leyendecker, 2002; Aguilar and Mitchell, 2010). Although these conditions may not contribute to mortality but can significantly affect patient’s reproductive health, and considerably alter their quality of life (Jones et al., 2004; Weissman et al., 2004; Chachamovich et al., 2010). Dysmenorrhoea refers to the occurrence of painful cramps in the lower abdominal region during menstruation and is one of the unresolved gynecological disorders in adolescent girls and women of reproductive age (Wang et al., 2004; Harel, 2008). This condition is mainly characterized by cramping pain in the lower abdomen immediately before or during menstruation, which does affect the quality of their life and work (Davis and Westhoff, 2001).

ABSTRACT

In oil palm there are three fruit forms viz. dura, tenera and pisifera. The commercial planting material is tenera produced by crossing dura and pisifera (D X P). Dura has thick shell and less economic part, where as pisifera is an abortic, female sterile type and cannot be reproduced in the normal ways. When tenera is selfed, segregation takes place in the monogenic Mendelian ratio; 1 dura: 2 tenera: 1 pisifera. Since all these palm types are morphologically alike, they can be confirmed only after fruiting, and verifying the internal fruit morphology. Fruiting in pisifera is highly erratic and often prolonged to several years. Proper technique in identifying these palms has been puzzling the breeder all over. Hence, a shell thickness marker is very important for early identification of the oil palm varieties.

An attempt has been taken to screen PCR primers and select the probable primers linked to the shell thickness in the present study. ‘Bulk segregation analysis’ approach was adopted for the study and DNA isolation was carried out from 25 dura and 25 pisifera palms. All the palms were developed from same tenera x tenera crosses. DNA from all the 25 duras and 25 pisiferas were pooled separately. Two pooled DNA samples were subjected to RAPD analysis with 50 random primers using the standard RAPD protocol. The amplified samples were electrophoresed and documented.

Both the pooled samples showed same banding pattern with all the primers, except 10 primers showing differences. Since the genetic configuration of the pooled dura DNA was likely to be same as that of the pisifera pooled DNA, the primers showing difference in banding pattern were the putative primers linked to shell thickness. All the 10 primers would be used for amplification of individual dura and pisifera DNA for confirmation of shell thickness marker.

Seabuckthorn or Siberian pineapple or Leh Berry is an emerging new horticultural crop of temperate region in the world. In India, its importance was realized in 1992 when the author found its wild abundance in cold desert of Leh /Ladakh, Jammu and Kashmir State and named it as Leh Berry. Perhaps Chinese were the first to use this plant as medicine even before 8th century. In traditional Chinese medicines, seabuckthorn products are used as health drinks, for cardiovascular and digestive diseases and ailments related to lungs and skin. Chinese Olympic athletes were served seabuckthorn based health drinks to improve their physical performance and endurance. Seabuckthorn figures in folklore medicines of China, Mongolia, Tibet, India ,Russia, Pakistan and Afghanistan. Ancient Greeks were taken by surprise before 12th century to find their horses, strong and energetic again with a shine on their hair, which were let loose to die a natural death. These horses used seabuckthorn wild growth as their fodder.

It produces contraction of the unstriped muscular fibers, hence a constringent feeling throughout the whole body. This produces an anemic condition, coldness, numbness, mortification and gangrene. A useful remedy for old persons with shriveled skin- thin, scrawny old women. All the Secale conditions are better from cold; the whole body is pervaded by great heat. Haemorrhages continued oozing, thin, fetid, watery black blood. Debility, anxiety, emaciation, though appetite and thirst may be excessive. Facial and abdominal muscles twitch. Secale lowers the flow of pancreatic juice by raising the blood pressure.

Menstrual colic, with coldness and intolerance of heat. Passive haemorrhages in feeble, cachetic women. Burning pains in uterus, brownish, offensive leucorrhoea. Menses irregular, copious, dark, continuous oozing of watery blood until next period. Threatened abortion about the third month. During labor no expulsive action, though everything is relaxed. After-pains. Suppression of milk; breasts do not fill properly. Dark, offensive lochia. Puerperal fever, putrid discharges, tympanitis, coldness, suppressed urine.

Fruits and vegetables are important supplement to the nutritional requirements in the human diet as they provide the essential minerals, vitamins, flavonoids/ antioxidants and dietary fiber required for maintaining health. India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world after China. During 2012-13, fruits and vegetables have registered a production of about 77.7 million MT and 159.5 million MT respectively (NHB, 2013. However, increase in production has not matched with the improvement in infrastructure for post-harvest management and processing. Fruits and vegetables are highly susceptible to deterioration owing to their high moisture content and delicate nature. Besides, most of the fruits and vegetables are seasonal in nature leading to glut in the local market during peak season resulting in huge economic losses to the growers. According to an estimate, 6-18% of fruits and vegetables are lost in the supply chain right from harvest to consumption due to lack of infrastructure for postharvest management, processing and value addition (Nanda et al., 2012).
