Introduction
Processing fruit and vegetables by applying heat is one of the most important methods of preservation as it exerts a positive preservative effect on the foods by destroying spoilage causing micro-organisms, enzymes, insects, parasites, etc. Heat processing also improves the availability of nutrients by improving digestibility, releasing vitamins like bound niacin, destroying anti-nutritional factors like trypsin inhibitor in some legumes including soybean, causing gelatinization of starches, and producing shelf-stable products. However, heating also causes some alteration or destruction of the sensory quality of fresh foods like changes in flavor, color, taste, and texture as a result, heatprocessed foods are perceived to have different sensory qualities than fresh produce.
Preservation by heat (thermal processing) involves heating foods in hermetically sealed containers for a specific time at a particular temperature to eliminate/kill/inactivate the microbial pathogens that endanger public health
and micro-organisms and enzymes that deteriorate food during storage. Most of the raw material used for canning is usually contaminated with different species and strains of bacteria, molds, and yeasts undergoing different stages of growth (lag phase, log phase, stationary phase, vegetative phase, sporulation phase, etc.,). Amongst these, bacterial spores are more difficult to inactivate. Thus, the criteria for heat processing chosen to inactivate the spores are also presumed to be capable of inactivating all other forms of microorganisms. Unlike fruits, most vegetables being low acid or even non-acid require a severe heat treatment to kill most bacteria. It is, therefore, necessary to work out the proper time and temperature combination for each category of food to ensure complete preservation.

Introduction
For setting up a fruit processing plant, the following cost and non-cost factors affecting the plant’s location are considered. Cost factors include raw material cost, transportation cost, cost of land, building and machinery, utilities cost, taxes, and insurance costs. At the same time, non-cost factors consisting of wages, salaries and incentives, market potential, community attitude, cost regulation, quality of life (school, living, recreation for workers, etc.), and environmental impact are taken into consideration. The main objective for the selection of the site for the processing unit is to minimize the sum of all costs. To minimize the cost, one should think not only the today’s costs but about long-term costs as well.
Plant Layout
The advantages of good plant layout are: -

Introduction: Food processing involves different steps from receiving raw material, preparing for product manufacture, and packaging to storage. All these steps are called unit operations. They are broadly categorized as raw
material preparation (receiving, sorting, grading, washing, peeling, blanching, slicing, cutting, dicing etc), processing (canning, drying, pulping, juicing, product manufacture like jam, jelly, preserves, candies, pickling, sauce making, etc.) and post-production handling including packaging and storage. A brief detail about each unit operation is discussed as under:
1. Raw Material Handling
Material handling includes varied operations such as hand or mechanical harvesting on the farm, transportation in trucks or refrigerated vehicles of perishable produce to the market or to the processing plant or to store/godowns. For conveying, a wide variety of mechanical conveyors is used depending on the type of material. Common conveyors used in the processing plant include screw conveyors, bucket conveyors, belt conveyors and vibratory conveyors. Throughout these operations, care is taken to maintain sanitary conditions, minimize bruises and product loss, maintain raw material quality like physical appearance, and vitamin contents, minimize microbial growth and minimize other detrimental changes to the product quality during handling etc. It also includes other unit operations like receiving, cleaning/washing, sorting, grading, peeling, halving, slicing, blanching etc for preparation of fruit and vegetables for processing.

Introduction
Food preservation refers to an art or science which deals with the process of prevention of decay, deterioration or spoilage of food commodity to allow it to be stored in a safe condition for future use. All foods gradually undergo deterioration or spoilage from the time immediately they are harvested or manufactured. Some commodities spoil rapidly, while others can keep longer but for limited periods. The basic purposes of food preservation are:
1. Extension of shelf life of foods thus increasing the supply
2. Ensuring the availability of seasonal foods throughout the year
3. Adding variety to the diet
4. Saving time by reducing preparation time and energy
5. Stabilizing farm prices and prices of food
6. Improving the nutritional qualities The food spoilage can be caused due to growth and activity of micro-organisms, insects or rodents, action of enzymes, chemical reactions and physical changes that takes place during processing, drying, or freezing etc. Classification of Food Depending upon the type of spoilage and level of perishability, the foods are classified into three broad categories:

Food Pipe Line refers to a post-harvest system that deals with ensuring the delivery of a crop/commodity from the time and place of harvest to the time and place of consumption, with minimum loss, maximum efficiency, and maximum returns to all concerned including the grower, processors, and consumer. The term ‘system’ represents a dynamic, complex aggregate of logically interconnected functions or operations within a particular sphere of activity. The term pipeline refers to the functional succession of various operations but tends to ignore their complex interactions.
Stages of the post-harvest system
The food commodities broadly undergo different stages/operations of postharvest systems right from harvest to consumption. However, the applicability of different stages varies with the type of crop. Different unit operations involved in the post-harvest system of food commodities are as under:
1. Harvesting
2. Threshing (food grains, pulses and oilseeds)
3. Drying (food grains, pulses and oilseeds)
4. Collection, Sorting, grading, packaging (Horticultural Crops)
5. Transportation and distribution
6. Storage (Godowns, cold stores, CA stores)
7. Processing

Introduction
Fruits and vegetables are an important part of the human diet as they provide the necessary nutrition, essential minerals, vitamins, antioxidants, dietary fiber, etc., required for maintaining proper health. India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world after China. Comparison of area under horticultural crops during 2011-12 and 2021-22 indicate substantial improvement from 18.5 million ha to 27.6 million ha with a simultaneous increase in production from 215.04 million MT to about 333.25 million MT respectively in the country within a span of just one decade (Table 1.1). The credit for this spectacular growth in area and production goes to the sustained efforts of the central and state governments for the launch of several farmers’/ growers’ welfare schemes viz., National Horticulture Mission (NHM), Horticulture Mission for Northeast and Himalayan states (HMNEH), Mission for Integrated Development of Horticulture (MIDH); R&D support by the ICAR and State Agriculture & Horticulture Universities, extension agencies/Krishi Vigyan Kendra and proactive farmers and orchardists. However, the increase in production has still not kept pace with the improvement in infrastructure for post-harvest handling, management, processing, and value addition. Various studies still indicate that under normal conditions more than 15-20% of the produce goes to waste from production to consumption which in monetar terms accounts for huge economic losses. A recent study sponsored by the Ministry of Food Processing Industries Government of India and conducted by NABARD Consultancy Services has indicated that about 19.33 million MT worth Rs 58013.71 Crores of fruit & vegetables goes to waste annually as postharvest loss (4.87-15.05%) in various channels from harvesting to consumption (NABCONS,2022). The condition becomes even worse when there is a glut in the market, road blockades, or seasonal vagaries, and farmers are forced to leave their produce in the field itself without harvesting or dispose it at throwaway prices. Such a situation can, however, be controlled by diverting thisproduce to processing for conversion into a number of value-added products for its later use in human consumption. Thus, processing and preservation of horticultural crops have now become a necessity rather than a luxury.

Grape (Vitis vinifera L.) is one of the most valuable and popular fruit crops all over the world (Mohsen, 2021). In India, grapes are mainly grown for table, raisin and wine making. Major grape producing countries are China, Italy, France, Spain, USA, Turkey, and India while, major wine producing countries are France, Italy, Spain, and USA (OIV, 2024). According to an estimate, grapevine is spread on an area of 1.71 lakh ha and production was 37.81 lakh MT in the country during the year 2023-24 (NHB, 2024). India ranks first in world for grape productivity and 7th for grape production during 2023-24 (APEDA, 2024).
Traditionally, grapes are grown on their own roots. However, due to deteriorating soil and water conditions, the use of rootstocks has become essential in the tropical climate of India to maintain production (Singh and Sharma, 2005). The grape industry which is important to produce wine and table grapes is facing  significant challenges due to changing climatic conditions. Climate change has led to increased temperatures, altered precipitation patterns, and more frequent extreme weather events, all of which can adversely affect grapevine health and productivity. To combat, the role of grape rootstocks has become increasingly vital for maintaining sustainable viticulture. Grape rootstocks are the belowgraft joint part of the grapevine onto which the scion variety is grafted. These rootstocks are typically derived from species of Vitis genus other than Vitis vinifera, the primary species used for grape production.

India, internationally recognized as the principal producer, consumer and exporter of spices globally, is often referred to as the spice bowl of the world. A total of 75 spices out of 109 are cultivated in the country, among which
pepper, cardamom, chillies, ginger, turmeric, coriander, cumin, and fenugreek are of significant importance. The approximate export of spices during 2021- 22 was 15,31,154 MT valued at 30,576.44 crore (US $4,102.29 million)
compared to 17,58,985 MT valued at 30,973.32 crore (US $ 4,178.80 million) during the previous financial year. Indian spices are exported to more than 180 destinations, with the leading importers being USA, China, Bangladesh, Thailand, UAE, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, UK, Indonesia, and Germany. The key spice-producing states of India include Himachal Pradesh (ginger), Haryana (garlic), Karnataka (pepper, ginger, cardamom (small), chilli, turmeric and garlic), Orissa (ginger, chilli, turmeric, and garlic), Kerala (pepper, chilli, turmeric, nutmeg, mace, and clove) and Rajasthan (coriander, chilli, cumin, garlic, fenugreek, fennel, and ajwain).

Of the 75 spices grown in India, 20 are classified as seed spices, where the economically important part is the seed.

Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus Moench), known in many English-speaking countries as lady’s finger or gumbo, belongs to family Malvaceae. The geographical origin of okra is disputed and supposed to be South Asian, Ethiopian and West African origins (Anonymous, 20013a). Its proposed parents are reported to be in South Asian; therefore, it is believed that perhaps it is of South Asian origin. However, because of greater diversity in okra in West African region, it is considered to be originated in West Africa. Masters (1875) proposed that it originated in India.
Okra is cultivated in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions, including the Middle East, Africa, Brazil, Turkey and southern states of USA (IBPGR, 1990; Jideani and Adetula, 1993; Acquistucci and Francisci, 2002). In tropics it is cultivated during summer and in the warmer parts of the temperate regions. It is an annual or perennial plant, growing up to 2 m height. The leaves are 10–20 cm long and broad, palmately lobed with 5-7 lobes. The flowers are 4–8 cm in diameter, with five petals which are generally yellow, but often white with a red or purple spot at the base of each petal. The fruit is a capsule which may attain length up to 18 cm containing numerous round seeds. Okra is an allopolyploid of uncertain parentage (proposed parents include Abelmoschus ficulneus, A. tuberculatus and a reported “diploid” form of okra).

Vegetable crops are highly susceptible to biotic stresses indicated by disease causing micro-organism (fungi, bacteria, virus and phytoplasma). Indiscriminate use of chemicals for the control of diseases, insect pest have
several disadvantages, particularly increased cost of cultivation, residual toxicity in food chain and development of resistance against pathogen. Management of diseases involves use of resistant varieties and integration of cultural and chemical control measures. Of the biotic stresses much of the breeding efforts have been directed towards developing resistance against diseases. In fact, breeding for resistance, has been one of the most important objective of vegetable breeder in the last half of the century. Genes that contribute to pathogen tolerance/resistance can be obtained from local germplasm resources, or through exotic lines, wild species or genera, or lines from other breedingprograms. In the biotechnological approaches for vegetable breeding also,  most of the achievement has been to generate transgenic plants resistance to disease. Often breeding for resistance has assumed greater importance in a number of vegetable crops.
Major Diseases of Tomato
Early blight: The casual organism is Alternaria solani. The symptoms appears as small, black spots with enlarged and concentric rings in a bull’s eye pattern in the center of the leaves. Tissue surrounding the spots may turn yellow. On fruits, dark brown concentric rings are seen that affects the market quality.

Vegetable crops belonging to the family Cucurbitaceae are known as cucurbits. These include 950 species in over 90 genera, mainly distributed in the tropics and subtropics (Schaefer and Renner, 2011). Enormous diversity of cucurbit genetic resources has evolved in past centuries to cater the nutritional requirements of people in different geographical and climatic regions. A large number of cucurbitaceous vegetables coming from different centres of origin are cultivated worldwide (Table 1). However, these crops are challenged by several biotic and abiotic stresses. Cultivated varieties are constrained by market demands, the necessity for climatic adaptations, domestication bottlenecks, and in most cases, limited capacity for interspecific hybridization, creating narrow genetic bases for crop improvement. Genetic resources are the building block for any crop improvement programme and includes landraces, traditional varieties, wild, weedy and other related species constituting primary, secondary and tertiary gene pools. They are valuable sources of important genetic traits needed for developing resilient and climate smart crop varieties and therefore, important for food security. The success and pace of the development depends on the efficient use of plant genetic resources. Wild relatives are incredible genetic resources carrying several desirable attributes like nutritional quality, resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses etc. Most of the crop wild relatives of cultivated crops across the world are not receiving adequate attention for their effective utilization in breeding programs. It is therefore, of utmost priority to protect them in the wild, through in-situ conservation, where they can continue to evolve and develop these useful adaptations. ICAR-National Bureau of Plant Genetic Resources (ICAR-NBPGR) is the nodal agency for the management of national wealth of vegetable genetic resources speciallyworking for collections, characterization, identification and documentation of new germplasm. Besides, it also bears the responsibility for conservation of the germplasm for future through sustainable use. The Vegetable germplasm is being conserved both under in-situ and ex-situ genebanks. This chapter highlights the status of Cucurbit genetic resources and procedures to access the germplasm by various stakeholders for research use.
 

Globally, India ranked second in vegetable production and contributed 15.8 and 14% to global vegetable area and production, respectively. The production of vegetables in India is estimated to be 212.91 million tonnes in the year 2022-23 compared to 209.14 million tonnes in the year 2021-22. India ranked first in production of okra in the world (73% of world production) and second in brinjal (27.55%), cabbage (13%) and tomato (11%). The major vegetable growing states in India are West Bengal (14.1%), Uttar Pradesh (11.4%), Bihar (9.3%), Madhya Pradesh (8.0%) and Gujarat (7.1%). Vegetables are especially important crops for farmers with small holdings because an appreciably higher income per hectare can be generated by growing vegetables than from conventional staple crops (Genova et al, 2006). However, vegetables are generally considered more vulnerable than staple crops to stressful environmental conditions including extremes of temperatures, drought, salinity, alkalinity, water logging, mineral nutrient excesses and deficiency (Chinnusamy et al, 2005). These environmental stresses are likely to be exacerbated by the prevalent climatic changes in many parts of the world.
Among environmental factors, soil salinity stress is one of the main factor reducing production and productivity of vegetables in arid and semi-arid regions where irrigation water has excessive salt and annual rainfall is low. In India, about 6.73 million ha of land (~2.1% area of the country) is salt affected, out of which 2.96 million ha is saline and 3.77 million ha is sodic (Arora & Sharma 2017). About 75% of salt-affected areas exist in four states, i.e., Gujarat, Maharashtra, West Bengal, and Rajasthan (Mandal et al., 2018).

The perennial nature of fruit crops coupled with high heterozygosity, protracted juvenility, and lack of information on inheritance patterns of important traits of economic significance is responsible for slow progress in breeding of fruit crops. Citrus is one of the most popular fruit crops cultivated in around 140 countries of the world mainly in the Asia-Pacific region. In Asia, citrus fruits are a major crop for the local people in meeting their nutritional requirements and livelihood. Citrus is cultivated as an indispensable cash crop both for domestic consumption and the export market. Recently, the citrus production has shown an increasing trend mainly attributed to its increased demand as a nutritious and healthy drink owing to the possession of many medicinal and antioxidant properties in its fruits.
The clonal selection has been used primarily as one of traditional breeding methods because bud sport mutations arise frequently in Citrus (Iwamasa et al., 1981; Uzun et al., 2004). This method of breeding generally offers many advantages to select clones suitable for their identified uses. Yield and fruit quality are the major targets of breeding and both these can be enhanced through clonal selection of natural mutants or seedlings. The major aim of the clonal selection studies is the selection of clones bearing regularly for many years, improved fruit appearance and tolerance to biotic and abiotic stresses. In general, identifying the elite clones, testing them under different climatic conditions, and freeing them from the virus and virus-like pathogens carried by the mother plants are major steps involved in clonal selection (Ulubelde et al., 1986) for the improvement of fruit crops.

Litchi (Litchi chinensis Sonn.), a subtropical perennial fruit tree, belongs to family Sapindaceae and is indigenous to China. Its cultivation spread to the neighbouring countries of the south-east Asian region and other countries. The fruit of litchi is small, heart-shaped, conical or spherical in shape and pinkish red to bright-red in colour, with varying colour intensity in different cultivars. The pulp of fruit is crispy and grape-like in texture, very succulent and aromatic and is generally characterized by a sweet, acid, juicy and soft taste. Because of these reasons, litchi is highly prized in its fresh form as well as in different processed formulations. The total litchi production is about 24,00,000 tonnes from the net cultivated are of about 8,00,000 ha. The main litchi-producing countries are China, India and Thailand, whereas it is commercially grown also in many other countries. Of the total world litchi production, China and India contribute about 90%. Although litchi plants are long-lived, even then new plantings of this fruit are being done regularly, ensuring the continuous growth of production at the global level. In India, where this fruit can be grown in off season also in the southern states of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the litchi production is about 7,37,200 tonnes from an area of 99,170 ha (Chandrakala et al., 2023).
 

Probably since the beginning of human life on the planet, they have used local fruits and vegetables. For a long time, they have enjoyed the fruit of the wild trees without knowing how to successfully produce them. Such native fruit trees have many advantages. These trees have an extraordinary genetic diversity that can be exploited in breeding programs and genetic advancement of domestic varieties (Khadivi et al., 2020). Many indigenous fruits are still highly valuable, and the harvesting and selling of these forest fruits contribute significantly to the local economy of families in the area. The product collected from forest trees is completely healthy and in terms of quality, they may even be equal to “organic fruits”. In a most recently published book chapter entitled organic pomegranate production in Iran, compiled by Alizadeh and Varasteh (2024), wild pomegranates were considered as noble source of healthy food. Given the multifunctional, ubiquitous nature of wild edible fruits the present chapter was compiled to introduce wild fruit trees of northern Iran with a focus on providing more detailed information about wild pomegranates.
Geographical Aspects of Northern Iran Northern Iran
is a geographical region encompassing a relatively large and fertile area, located along the southern border of the Caspian Sea and the Alborz Mountains. Upon closer examination of the map of Iran (Fig. 1), one can identify three northern provinces: Golestan, Mazandaran, and Gilan. These provinces all share borders with the Caspian Sea and the Alborz Mountains. The Alborz mountain range extends from the western border with the Republic of Azerbaijan to the eastern border with Turkmenistan (Fig.1).

Genome editing has emerged as a powerful tool for accelerating crop improvement in horticultural crops by enabling precise modifications in their genetic architecture. Considering the development and advantages of genomeediting technologies in improving diverse characteristics of horticultural crops, substantial increase has been reported in recent years including ZFN, TALEN, and especially CRISPR/Cas systems. The CRISPR/Cas technology has proved its potential in altering many genes of interest in horticultural plants including fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants for improving agronomically important traits and attributes such as growth rate, seed size, flowering time, flower color, storage time, resistance to biotic stresses, tolerance to abiotic stresses, herbicide tolerance, metabolism, fruit color, fruit ripening etc. This technology opens new avenues for more favorable and precise manipulation of plant genomes to improve crop performance.
Genome editing has emerged as a powerful biotechnological tool with transformative potential for horticultural crops. It involves the precise modification of plant DNA to enhance desired traits, increase crop yield, and confer resistance to pests, diseases, and environmental stresses. Molecular tools like CRISPR-Cas9, TALENs, and ZFNs act as molecular scissors, allowing for the targeted alteration of specific DNA sequences with unprecedented accuracy. This technology allows scientists to introduce or enhance beneficial traits in crops, including disease resistance, improved nutrition, and drought tolerance. Horticulture is a critical component of global food production and human well-being as it involves cultivation and management of plants for food, aesthetics, and medicinal purposes. Horticultural crops comprising fruits, vegetables, ornamental plants, and medicinal herbs, not only contribute to nutritional needs of populations worldwide but also enhance the visual appeal of our surroundings. However, productivity and quality of horticultural crops face significant constraints due to challenges such as biotic and abiotic stresses, limited genetic variation, and increasing demands for improved traits. Plant breeders have employed various techniques, such as hybridization, selection, and genetic manipulation, to enhance horticultural crops. These approaches have contributed to improved yield, disease resistance, and other desirable traits.

With the advent of clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeat (CRISPR)-associated protein9 (CRISPR/Cas9) genome editing, a fast and efficient new breeding technology, precision breeding in vegetable crops has become possible now. Several genes have been edited and functionally characterized using CRISPR/Cas9 in tomato for multiple traits such as plant type, floral morphology, fruit traits, disease resistance, and abiotic stress tolerance. The CRISPR/Cas9 has been proven in successful introgression of de novo domestication of elite traits from wild relatives to cultivated tomato. The progress in CRISPR/Cas9 based improvement in vegetable improvement, has been discussed.
Vegetables are an important source of healthy diet, as they provide essential nutrients including vitamins, minerals, dietary fibre, antioxidants and other phytochemicals. Dietary fiber-rich vegetables improve digestion, while also lowering the risk of obesity, diabetes, high cholesterol and heart disease (Behera et al., 2021). A world vegetable survey showed that around 392 vegetable crops are cultivated worldwide, representing 70 families and 225 genera. Over 97 species of higher plants are being cultivated and consumed as vegetables in India. These crops belong to 20 different families such as Cucurbitaceae (25 crops), Fabaceae (16 crops), Brassicaceae (12 crop) and Solanaceae (6 crops). The world’s total vegetables production was 1,155 million tonnes in 2021 where China ranks first with a total production of 600 million tonnes, accounting for 52.18% of the total world production. The top 5 countries (China, India, the United States of America, Turkey and Vietnam) account for 70.36% of total world’s production. As far as India is concerned,  it is the largest producer of ginger (2.23 million tonnes) and okra (6.47 million tonnes) in the world, while ranking 2nd in potato (54.23 million tonnes), dry onion (26.64 million tonnes), cauliflower and broccoli (9.25 million tonnes), brinjal (12.87 million tonnes) and cabbage (9.56 million tonnes) (FAO 2023).

Fruits contribute to nutritional security and thus are an important part of food system. To meet the future demand, development of varieties with improved yield and quality is the focus of researchers involved in fruit breeding. Though conventional breeding has resulted in the development of improved commercial varieties of different fruit crops, however conventional breeding is time consuming and faces several challenges due to long juvenile phase, highly heterozygous nature of most of the fruit crops. Challenges like changing climate, consumer preference, socio-economic conditions like reduced availability of land, labour and increasing cost of inputs, require fast and efficient methods to develop the varieties to meet the demands, which is not feasible with conventional breeding. Marker assisted breeding has given impetus to breeding efforts in several fruit crops, however it’s use is limited only for the traits controlled by a few major QTLs.
During last few years, enormous genomic resources have been developed for fruit crops using next generation sequencing technology. Such advances in genomic research in many fruit crops have paved the way for precision breeding using genomic assisted breeding (GAB) tools. GAB has helped in characterisation and utilisation of genome resources and using allele variation for cultivar development (Varshney et al. 2021). Advances in sequencing technology and affordability has allowed the genome wide analysis (GWAS) on diversity panels of different fruits resulting in identification of allelic variation associated with the traits of interest. Also, identification of superior alleles of candidate genes makes them amenable to genome editing based precision breeding. Genome wide genotyping and phenotyping offers tools for developing strategy for genomic selection (GS). Genomic selection relies on the prediction of breeding values of tested genotypes based on the large number of markers spread over entire genome. These tools promise to further improve breeding efficiency in fruit crops.

DUS testing is a way of determining whether a newly bred variety differs from existing varieties within the same species, or the characteristics used to establish distinctness are expressed uniformly and that these characteristics do not change over subsequent generations. Testing the distinctness, uniformity and stability (DUS) of crop varieties is a statutory requirement before varieties can be entered into the Registers of Cultivars (National Lists) and/or granted Plant Breeders’ Rights (PBR). In India, Protection of Plant Varieties and Farmers’ Right (PPV&FR) Act (2001) provides the registration of new variety of plant if it conforms to the criteria of distinctness, uniformity and stability.
Why do we need a DUS test? New (candidate) varieties should be distinct from all other varieties whose existence is a matter of common knowledge, and also sufficiently uniform and stable with respect to the characteristics used to demonstrate distinctness. ‘Common knowledge’ is broadly defined to include all known varieties, i.e. any variety entered into or subject to an application for PBR, varieties grown commercially, held in publicly accessible reference collection, or of which there is a published description (UPOV 2002).
The responsibility for DUS testing of potato varieties in India lies with the ICAR-Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla, which is the national institute for potato research and development. Currently a set of 51 DUS characters in potato are defined by CPRI and being used for distinguishing new variety.

The potential of Vegetable Genetic Resources (VGR) is vast, offering solutions to future challenges such as food and nutritional security. Achieving this requires the identification, collection, conservation, documentation, and utilization of these resources. The introduction and acceptance of improved varieties have resulted in the replacement of numerous landraces and local crop cultivars across various agri-horticultural crops, with a particular impact on vegetables. The alignment of activities related to the management of plant genetic resources at both global and national levels has enhanced the opportunities for utilizing VGR. India possesses a rich diversity of vegetable genetic resources, comprising indigenous and exotic varieties. Information regarding VGR in the Indian region can be accessed through passport data, conservation records, catalogs detailing characterization and evaluation, as well as insights into local vegetable usage, all of which contribute to strengthening these initiatives. This chapter delves into vegetable genetic resources, focusing on economically significant vegetable crops of India, along with regionally important crops, potential species, and their wild relatives, highlighting efforts undertaken at ICAR, NBPGR for its collection conservation, characterization and utilization.

Demand-driven vegetable breeding emphasizes the development of new cultivars based on specific consumer preferences, market demands, and environmental conditions. This approach contrasts with traditional breeding methods that primarily focus on agronomic traits like yield or disease resistance. The importance of demand-driven breeding lies in its ability to align agricultural production with consumer needs and market trends. By directly responding to consumer preferences such as taste, appearance, nutritional content, and culinary characteristics, breeders can create vegetables that are not only commercially viable but also meet consumer expectations. This approach enhances market acceptance and profitability for growers, distributors, and retailers alike. Breeders prioritize demand-driven breeding to stay competitive in a rapidly evolving market where consumer preferences can shift quickly. By understanding and responding to these preferences, breeders can develop cultivars that offer distinct advantages over existing varieties, leading to increased market share and improved economic outcomes for stakeholders throughout the supply chain. This chapter provides an understanding on demand-driven vegetable breeding, particularly opportunities, and challenges.

Introduction
Crop production is weather dependent and almost every crop has been affected by the changing climate. The favourable weather may result bumper production sometimes or even complete destruction of crop may take place under severe weather aberrations. The number of events of sudden aberrations is increasing in a cropping period with the gradual climate change in the recent past. It has been recorded too severe in case of perennial crops. Ready to harvest crops have several times been completely destroyed due to thunderstorm or cyclone in coastal regions or even in main land. Thus, Indian agriculture is being impacted by the climatic changes, and its affect is very much visible now (Aggarwal, 2008). Horticulture sector is not escaped from its’ ill affect and new challenges are coming for production (Singh et al., 2021). The role of adaptation strategy has now been felt crucial (Babu et al., 2021; Banerjee et al., 2022) and importance of agro advisory not only protects the crops from such types of risks but also provide guidance to farmers about the right time for activities in crop husbandry (Adak et al., 2018). Issuance for improving water productivity in water limited areas (Adak and Babu, 2024), micronutrient management for nutrient richness and enhanced yield (Adak et al., 2023; Shukla et al., 2020), rejuvenating unproductive orchards (Shukla et al., 2021; Mishra et al., 2007), disease (Misra et al., 2013; Shukla et al., 2015, 2019, 2020, 2021a,b; 2022; Kumari et al., 2021) and insect pest (Gundappa et al., 2016; 2018) management are becoming very crucial and essential for the benefit of growers.

The low productivity in guava because of traditional planting distance (6-7 m apart) with no canopy management practices. Guava under traditional and high density planting system, though it gives high yield during initial stage but as the tree advances in age light interception and aeration decreases inside the canopy due to shading and overcrowding, resulting low yields and poor quality. In order to develop efficient canopy architecture for HDP and traditional planting system, the ICAR-CISH has standardized training system and canopy management with objective to have sustained high yield and quality of guava.
Guava bears flower on current shoots produced on mature wood laterally or terminally. In general flowers are produced in the leaf axils in 1 or 2-3 in cluster. The crop load depend on number of new shoots, hence more new shoots resulting more fruiting surface area.
High Density Planting System
Accommodation of more plants per unit area is known as high density planting system. Since guava respond well to pruning and fruiting starts 40-50 days after pruning and more new shoots emerged on which more flowers and fruits appears, thus yield increased. For successful HDP suitable canopy shape and its management is prerequisite. Guava is usually planted 6-7 m distance accommodating 277 to 204 plants per hectare the yield vary 35-80 kg/tree with yield per hectare 15-12 t/ha. In traditional planting density usually fruiting takes place on high on the tree.

Horticulture crops hold significant importance for their economic, nutritional, environmental, and aesthetic contributions. They contribute to agricultural GDP, create employment opportunities, and provide income for farmers and other stakeholders along the value chain. Horticultural crops often have highvalue market demand, leading to increased profitability for farmers and rural communities. The horticultural crops, including fruits, vegetables, nuts, and medicinal, spices are rich sources of essential nutrients, vitamins, minerals and dietary fiber. They contribute to a balanced and nutritious diet, promoting good
health and preventing various diseases. Consumption of horticultural crops is linked to reduced risks of chronic diseases, including heart disease and certain types of cancer. These crops have environmental benefits. They contribute to biodiversity conservation by providing habitats for various species and supporting beneficial insects and pollinators. Additionally, horticultural practices such as agroforestry, crop diversification, and organic farming methods can enhance soil health, reduce erosion, promote water conservation, and mitigate climate change impacts. Adak and Pandey (2018) emphasised soil management of horticultural crops for attaining food and nutritional security of farm women. Babu et al. (2022) explained scientific interventions for enhancing productivity and profitability of farmers’ engaged in horticultural sector while Gundappa et al. (2016c) recommended management protocols for effective controls of mango hoppers to growers. Even, digital solutions are now-a-days is being tried to improve economic prosperity of fruit growers (Verma and Adak, 2021). Horticulture crops contribute to food security by diversifying thefood supply. They provide an array of options beyond staple crops, ensuring a varied and nutritious diet for individuals and communities.

Introduction
Horticulture is distinct from other economic sectors as its output is heavily reliant on weather conditions. The degree of success of horticultural production and economics is decided to a large extent by how well weather conditions corresponding to the crop’s optimal requirements are best utilized to raise the crops. Also, how successfully adverse weather circumstances, such as moisture, thermal, wind, radiation and biotic stresses were handled to minimize adversity. It is well understood that variability in weather elements (particularly rainfall and temperature) is the primary cause of inter-annual variability in crop output. The onset of weather extremes (dry spells, droughts, floods, heat waves, and hailstorms) has a negative impact on horticultural yield, resulting in a low level of productivity. Furthermore, weather can have an impact on output at multiple levels (vegetative stage, harvest, transportation, storage, etc.). Flooding, droughts, heat waves, cold spells, hailstorms, and other natural calamities pose significant risks to farms. These natural catastrophes can lead to lower yields, leaving uninsured farmers with little income for the season. Farmers often plant low-risk, low-return crops (such as early maturing varieties that are drought-resistant) to deal with erratic weather rather than investing in more profitable crops that are more sensitive to weather fluctuations and extremes. Thus, atmospheric stress has significant impacts on the food ecosystem (Bal and Minhas, 2017; MANAGE, 2018).

Saline agroecological systems are found in various regions worldwide, including coastal areas, arid and semi-arid regions, and areas affected by improper irrigation practices. These systems are characterized by high soil salinity levels, which can have detrimental effects on crop growth, nutrient availability and plant water uptake (Rai et al., 2020). Addressing these challenges requires specialized knowledge and tailored strategies to ensure sustainable agricultural practices in such environments (Dagar et al., 2019;
Sethi et al., 2016). Farm advisory and resource management services play a critical role in assisting farmers in saline agroecological systems by providing expert guidance, information dissemination, capacity building, and policy support (Adak et al., 2020). Farm advisory can play a crucial role in helping farmers understand the intricacies of saline agroecological systems, including the causes of soil salinity, its effects on crop performance, and the necessary strategies for managing these challenges effectively. Farm advisory can assist farmers in selecting suitable crop varieties that exhibit tolerance to high salinity levels. This requires comprehensive knowledge of salt-tolerant crops and and nutritional needs. Providing information on the performance and market
demand of different crop varieties enables farmers to make informed decisions about crop selection, optimizing productivity in saline agroecological systems (Kumar et al., 2020; Singh et al., 2021). It can offer guidance on crop management practices tailored to saline environments by providing recommendations on irrigation scheduling, water management techniques, and appropriate fertilization strategies to minimize salt accumulation and maximize crop yields. Introduction
Farm advisories have played a key role in transforming India’s agriculture, helping the country shift from a food deficit to a surplus nation. The Indian public agricultural extension system has been instrumental in this transformation through Green Revolution in the 1960s, but by the end of the 1970s, its role had started to decline. Critics argued that the system had become a monolithic organization without clear objectives (Babu et al., 2013). According to NSSO data, in 2004, public extension services in India, including the Krishi Vigyan Kendra, extension workers, field demonstrations and study tours, reached to less than ten percent of farmers. Instead, farmers relied mostly on other progressive farmers (17%) and input dealers (13%) for information, while mass media including radio, television and newspaper played a significant role reaching to more than thirty percent farmers (Mkhize and Zhou, 2012; Meena et al., 2022a). One of the major constraints in agricultural extension services (AES) in the country is the shortage of extension staff. According to a report, in 2012-13, a single extension functionary served 1,162 operationalholdings, whereas the recommended ratio was 1:400 in hilly areas, 1:750 in irrigated areas, and 1:1000 in rain-fed areas. Input dealers often provide manipulated information specific to the crops grown by farmers, affecting their decision-making process.

Introduction
Forecasting of future weather conditions are based upon the collection and analysis of meteorological observations. With the help of advanced computing system and satellite data, the accuracy of weather forecasting is improving day by day. Weather forecasts may be classified according to the space and time scale of the predicted phenomena. With advanced technology, the spatial resolution of accurate forecast is enhanced and India Meteorological Department (IMD) has started to issue the Block-level forecast. The meteorological phenomenon can be distinguished among three classes of phenomena with a scale that is larger than the turbulent microscale: the mesoscale, synoptic scale, and planetary scale (Geer et al., 2018). Considering the variability of agro-climatic condition of India, the micro-level weather based agro-advisory has great importance to enhance the farm income. IMD has initiated the Block-level Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) in collaboration with Indian Council of Agricultural Research through establishment of District Agromet Units (DAMUs) at various Krishi Vigyan Kendra’s (KVK). Improvisation of the existing District-level Agromet Advisory Services (AAS) and starting of Block-level services are the basic objectives of DAMU. The District Agromet Units will act as nodal centre to prepare and disseminate the crop and locationspecific AAS to farmers at block level. Apart from this, the micro-level Agromet Advisory Service was implemented at NICRA (National Innovation on Climate Resilient Agriculture) villages through a network project of Indian  Council of Agricultural Research (Banerjee et al, 2018; Chakraborty et al., 2018). As a part of the nation-wide program, the feasibility of village level agromet advisory has been assessed. Thus, the importance of micro-level  agromet advisory and advisory on extreme weather events are discussed in this chapter.

Introduction
Management of abiotic stresses in fruit orchards are essential and key issue for sustaining productivity. Worldwide fruit consumption has increased significantly because of the new recognitions of its broad relevance for health, nutrition and livelihood (Lansky and Newman, 2007). Fruits like pomegranate, grapes, dragon fruit, mango and sapota are being grown in tropical humid to dry as well as arid and semi-arid climates of India, especially in states like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Gujarat. Significant cultivars such as Bhagwa of pomegranate, Hapus, Kesar, Langra, Banganpalli, Totapuri of mango and Kallipati, Cricket ball of Sapota are being dominantly grown in these areas. Area under pomegranate was 2.62 lakh ha in 2018-19, producing 30.04 lakh MT at a productivity of 11.58  ha-1 with an export of 80.5 thousand MT during 2019-20 (Maity et al., 2020). The estimated area under grapes, mango, pomegranate and sapota in India is 0.14, 2.29, 0.26, 0.08 million ha, respectively whereas production estimates are reported to be 31.25, 204. 44, 23.15 and 10.03 million MT, respectively (NHB 2019-20 2nd estimate). Besides area of dragon fruit in India is rapidly expanding due to its high nutritional content, antioxidant properties, and market opportunities, covering around 20 thousand ha with annual production of 0.3 million MT. Despite the fact that >15 species of Hylocereus have been reported; only 3 to 4 are under cultivation. Among these, white flesh (H. undatus) occupied more than half of the area. However, the current premium pricing and consumer demand for pink flesh may shift cultivation to H. polyrhizus. Furthermore, species with yellow peel and white flesh (H. megalanthus) is now being cultivated. In this context, the issuances of agro-advisory services to farmers are essential for adopting time bound management protocols (Adak et al.,2018a). The importance of this scientific management is significantly linked with the fruit business both in domestic market and foreign export. Therefore, it is of great importance for advisory, training, farmers-scientific interaction and other human resource management programmes to sensitize and develop trained man power sufficiently which contributes to the horticultural growth and development. In this backdrop, fruit orchards and their scientific management is discussed in this chapter with special reference to abiotic and biotic stress management in Pune region of Maharashtra.

Introduction
Spices have been considered significant in the culinary art from time immemorial. India, “The Homeland of Spices” is one among the largest producers, consumers and exporters of spices as well as spice products. Spices comprise different plant components such as floral parts or fruits or berries or seeds or rhizomes or roots or leaves or kernel or aril or bark or bulbs. The recorded history of the use of spices dates back to 5000 years or so from the Egyptian or at the most from the Indus valley civilization. Spices are used for flavouring, seasoning and imparting aroma in various cuisines. Besides these inherent qualities, some of them are known to be fungistatic, antimicrobial or antibiotic. They are also processed into numerous ‘value added’ products such as oleoresins, essential oils, curry powder etc. Black pepper, cardamom and turmeric are the major spice crops and its production and marketing are the main economy stays of lakhs of people of the country. Billions of rupees are involved in domestic trading and foreign export. Therefore, it is highly imperative for farmers to adopt the advanced practices to sustain spices productivity. Even, additional income could be generated from the intercropping of spices from the interspaces in mango orchards (Shukla and Adak, 2020). Thus the present chapter included all aspects of production to protection and value addition for  the benefits of growers.

Standard Operating Protocol for Export of Banana
Banana is one of the important fruit grown in India, as far as its export is concerned it is very limited which is below 1%. For export market it should be harvested at 85% maturity or the bunch is ready to harvest in 80-82 days after shooting initiation. Bunches are to be harvested carefully with two people. One person cut the hand and another person put the bunch onto the padding shoulder. Bunches should be slant cut with sickle shaped sharp knife free from any contamination. For export purpose banana fingers should be square, lie close together, hard, clean and free from any infestation and mucilaginous thread of pulp should be 4-5 cm in length. Skin should not be separated from pulp and no brown spot under the skin. De-handing must be done with sharp chisel type de-handing tool, by leaving maximum crown attached to the hand. The crown should be cut evenly; otherwise its outer finger may be detached. Other way to De-handing by using the nylon thread. It is easy method and it allows maximum crown attach with the land with minimum latex flow. The hands should be carefully paced in clean water which has alum 1 gm litre-1 or sodium hypochlorite (200 ppm) as surfactant for removing the latex and killing the micro-organism after that fruit must be packed in 20-25 kg capacity crates having foam in bottom and in between hands also. The most effective control of post harvest diseases and control of ripening of banana is treating the hands with 1.0% CISH METWASH an organic formulation for 30-60 seconds after that it should be carefully removed from this organic formulation and keep it in front of high speed fan for drying.

Among subtropical fruit crops mango, guava, bael and aonla are among the most important ones. The productivity of these crops is affected by many factors, among which diseases have their own economic significance. The crops use to suffer from a large number of diseases, however, economically important diseases having significance in agro-advisory are mentioned below.
Mango Wilt and Decline
The mango wilt disease caused by Ceratocystis fimbriata is one of the most devastating diseases (Shukla et al., 2015, 2018b, 2020; Shukla, 2020). Association of Berkeleomyces basicola and Lasidiplodia theobromae in wilt, decline and branch drying has also been observed. Symptoms: Ceratocystis infection on the trees causes dark staining of the affected wood, exudation of gum, leaf drying and ultimately death of the tree (Al Adawi et al., 2003; Shukla et al., 2018b). Later symptoms include vascular discolouration beneath the gummosis (Masood et al., 2008; Shukla et al., 2018b). The symptoms may appear in the form of sudden wilt, decline or branch drying and accordingly the whole tree or branch may die within a period of a fortnight to six months of appearance of first symptom.

Mangoes (Mangifera Indica L.), often referred to as the “king of fruits,” are celebrated for their rich flavour, nutritional value, and versatility in culinary applications (Swaroop et al., 2018). Globally, mangoes hold a significant economic and cultural position. Mangoes are grown in over 90 countries, with India, China, and Thailand being leading producers. They contribute
significantly to the agricultural economies of these and other tropical and subtropical regions (Makarabbi, 2023). Mangoes are a major export commodity for many countries, generating substantial foreign exchange. For instance, India’s mango exports account for a sizable share of the global mango market, valued at millions of dollars annually. In many developing countries, mango farming supports millions of smallholder farmers, providing employment and a source of income (Thakor, 2019). Mangoes are enjoyed in numerous forms— fresh, dried, as juices, pickles, and chutneys. They are also a key ingredient in various traditional dishes and desserts across different cultures. Mangoes play a central role in several cultural festivals and rituals, symbolizing prosperityand good fortune in countries like India and the Philippines. Mangoes are rich in essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, including vitamins A and C, folate, and fiber. Their consumption is associated with various health benefits, such as improved immunity, digestive health, and skin care (Yahia et al., 2023). While mangoes offer significant benefits, their cultivation faces several challenges, primarily due to pest infestations that can severely impact both yield and fruit quality. Effective management of these pests is crucial to ensure sustainable mango production (Singh and Baradevanal, 2021).

Mango (Mangiferaindica L) known as “the king of fruits” and “Apple of the Tropics” is most popular fruit in the tropics and sub-tropics. It moved from India to different countries and has gained popularity around the world. It has long been associated with the Indian culture and religious functions. Among different states, Uttar Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh constitute 23.64 per cent and 22.99 per cent share in the total mango, respectively, in the country. In 2023, Mango production had a total export volume of 78.56 billion MT. India is the biggest mango producer with a total production volume of 25 million MT of mangoes during the year. The top 10 mango producers in 2023 include India (25 million MT), China (3.8 million MT), Indonesia (3.6 million MT), Pakistan (2.7 million MT), Mexico (2.4 million MT), Brazil (2.1 million tons), Malawi (1.7 million MT), Thailand (1.6 million MT), Bangladesh (1.5 million MT) and Vietnam (1.4 million MT). As regards world-wide mango exports, Mexico is the biggest mango exporter with total exports worth $576.36 million in 2023. World population is increasing and currently stands at 8.2 Billion as on 2025. Food security of population of any country is becoming a challenging task and the entire population depends on the available national resources. The importance of scientific community in securing foods for everybody was felt necessary and it was expressed that there is a huge herculean task to ensure food for everybody. Farming community and fruit growers across the globe were engaged in serious efforts to produce fruits of good quality. The necessity to develop advanced technologies for nutritious foods was thus given national importance not only for food security but also of nutritional security. The sincere scientific efforts to develop recent innovative technologies to support fruit production even at harsh soils and environmental conditions are praiseworthy. Farmers, stakeholders, policy planners and technology developers have been devoted to achieve the target of Sustainable Developmental Goals. The target of United Nation’s 2030 to eradicate poverty and eradication of malnutrition should be achieved sustainably. People across nations are working devotedly to achieve the target. However, climatic changes have been significantlyaffecting the food production to food security across nations. Decadal information suggested the adverse impact of climates on the fruit production. Recent changes in weather extremisms had also affect harshly on the food production to supply chain. Thus, the role of scientific community to coup up the environmental hazards and to sustain fruit production becomes a reality. In this context, agroadvisory services plays significant role to support farming community and fruit growers to adopt time bound managemental practices. The ultimate aim of these services is to improve the orchard soil and tree health condition, enhance factor productivity vis-à-vis profitability and precise use of available natural resources. Quantification of variability in environmental indicators, soil and tree interactions were felt necessary for formulating effective policy plan (Malhotra, 2017). Adak et al. (2022) advocated for foliage spraying of 1 per cent zinc sulphate on mango cv. Dashehari to enhance yield and nutrient richness in fruit pulp.

1. Blast
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Pathogen attacks the crop at all stages of crop growth.
• Symptoms appear on leaves, nodes, rachis, and glumes. On the leaves, the lesions appear as small bluish green flecks, which enlarge under moist weather to form the characteristic spindle shaped spots with grey centre and dark brown margin (Leaf blast).
• Spots coalesce as the disease progresses and large areas of the leaves dry up and wither. Severely infected nursery and field appear as burnt.• Black lesions appear on nodes girdling them. The affected nodes may break up and all the plant parts above the infected nodes may die (nodal blast).
• During flower emergence, the fungus attacks the peduncle and the lesion turns to brownish-black which is referred to as rotten neck / neck rot / panicle blast (neck blast).
• In early neck infection, grain filling does not occur while in late infection, partial grainfilling occurs (Fig.1).

1) Powdery mildew
Diagnostic Symptoms
• A white, powdery fungal growth on the upper, lower or both leaves and shoots.
• There may be discolouration of the affected parts of the leaf, and heavily infected young leaves can be curled and distorted.
• Mildew growth may also be found on the stems, flower stalks, calyces and petals.
• Heavily infected flower buds frequently fail to open properly.
• Mildew growth on stems and flower stalks is usually thicker and more mat-like than that on the leaves.
• Mildew growth on all parts may turn browner as it ages (Fig-1).

1) Botrytis Gray Mould
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Appearance of a gray, fuzzy mold leaves, stems and on flowers of or plants. Also called, “gray mold”.
• Spotting or blight on leaf and flower stem lesions, and dieback.
• Flower parts become necrotic and die(Fig-1).

• Initially the tumors are glossy which rupture later on and become rough. They are about 3 mm broad and up to 12.5 mm long.
• Badly affected plants may be killed.
• In the presence of excessive soil moisture, especially under shaded conditions, when the stem fails to harden and remain succulent, the tumors are numerous (Fig-1).

• Yellowing of the entire network of veins in the leaf blade is the characteristic symptom.
• In severe infections, the younger leaves turn yellow, become reduced in size and the plant is highly stunted.
• The veins of the leaves will be cleared by the virus and intervenal area becomes completely yellow or white.
• In a field, most of the plants may be diseased and the infection may start at any stage of plant growth.
• Infection restricts flowering and fruits, if formed, may be smaller and harder.
• The affected plants produce fruits with yellow or white colour and they are not fit for marketing (Fig.1).
• The virus is spread by whitefly.

Diagnostic Symptoms
• Initially oblong brown spots having about 4-5 cm in length and 2-3 cm in width with grey centres surrounded with yellow hallo are found on the leaves.
• Large number of spots may be found on a single leaf and as the disease advances, spots enlarge and cover a major portion of leaf blade.
• Severly affected plants dry and wilt.
• Black dots acervuli formed in concentric rings on spot.The grey centres become thin and get teared(Fig-1).

1) Downy Mildew
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Yellow, angular spots restricted by veins resembling mosaic mottling appear on upper surface of leaves .
• Corresponding lower surface of these spots shows a purplish downy xgrowth in moist weather.
• Spots turn necrotic with age.
• Diseased leaves become yellow and fall down .
• Diseased plants get stunted and die .
• Fruits produced may not mature and have a poor taste (Fig.-1).

1) Anthracnose
Diagnostic Symptoms
• All the above ground parts are affected. However, the characteristic symptoms appear on pods.
• On cotyledons, spots are sunken dark brown or black with pink spore mass.
• Seedling infection results in collapse of seedling.
• Spots on leaves appear on lower side and are black. Later these may also appear on upper surface. When the infection is severe, the affected plants wither off.
• Black, sunken, circular spots of varying sizes appear on pods with bright red, yellow or orange margins. The centre of these spots later turns grey or pink due to sporulation of the pathogen. The border of these spots appear raised (Fig.1).

1. Alternaria leaf spot
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Spots are small, dark coloured.
• They enlarge, soon become circular & 1mm. in diameter.
• Under humid conditions groups of conidiophores will be formed in the spot.
• Spots develop concentric rings.
• Finally the spots coalesce leading to blighting of leaves.
• Pathogen is seed borne and cause shriveling of seeds and poor germination.
• Linear spots also appear on petioles, stems, pods & seeds (Fig.1).

1. Anthracnose or Fruit Rot and Die Back
Diagnostic Symptoms
The disease occurs in two forms: the die back and the ripe -rot Die back symptoms
• Small, circular to irregular, brownish black scattered spots appear on leaves.
• Severely infected leaves defoliate.
• Infection of growing tips leads to necrosis of branches from tip backwards.
• Necrotic tissues appear grayish white with black dot like acervuli in the center.
• Shedding of flowers due to the infection at pedicel and tips of branches.
Fruit symptoms
• Ripe fruits are more liable for attack than the green ones.
• Small, circular, yellowish to pinkish sunken spots appear on fruits.

1) Phomopsis fruit rot or Blight
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Plants are attacked at all stages of growth.
• On leaves, circular to irregular, clearly defined grayish brown spots having light centers appear. The diseased leaves become yellowish in colour and may drop off.
• Several black pycnidiacan be seen on older spots.
• Lesions on stem are dark brown, round to oval and have grayish centers where pycnidia develop.
• At the base of the stem, the fungus causes characteristic constrictions leading to canker development and toppling of plants.
• On fruits, small pale sunken spots appear which on enlargement cover entire fruit surface. These spots become watery leading to soft rot phase of the disease. A large number of dot like pycnidia also develop on such spots.
• Infection of fruit through calyx leads to development of dry rot and fruits appear black and mummified (Fig.1).

1. Damping off
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Disease occurs in two stages, i.e. the pre-emergence and the postemergence phase.
• In the pre-emergence phase, the seedlings are killed just before they reach the soil surface.
• The young radical and the plumule are killed and there is complete rotting of the seedlings.
• The post-emergence phase is characterized by the infection of the young, juvenile tissues of the collar at the ground level.
• The infected tissues become soft and water soaked. The seedlings topple over or collapse (Fig.1)
Etiology
• Pathogen; Pythium aphanidermatum.
• The fungus has a characteristic mycelium, which coenocytic, hyaline, freely branching and thick hyphae.
• It reproduces both asexually and sexually.

1. Early Blight
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Brown-black necrotic spot-angular, oval shape characterized by concentric rings .
• The concentric ring produce a target board effect, the most characteristic symptom of the disease.
• Several spot coalesce & spread all over the leaf.
• In severe attacks leaves shrivel and fall down.
• Infection and rotting of tubers has also been reported (Fig.1).

1. Anthracnose
Colletotrichum gloeosporioides (Glomerella cingulata)
Diagnostic Symptoms
• Disease produces symptoms like leaf spot, blossom blight, withertip, twig blight and fruit rot .
• Symptoms on leaves show as gray to brown spots with dark margins and a yellow halo. The spots later enlarge and coaleasce to form sizable necrotic areas.
• Tender shoots and foliage are easily affected which ultimately cause die back young branches.
• Blossom blight may vary in severity from slight to a heavy infection of the panicles .
• Black spots develop on panicles as well as on fruits. Severe infection destroys the entire inflorescence resulting in no setting of fruits.
• Young infected fruits develop black spots, shrivel and drop off.
• Fruits infected at mature stage carry the pathogen into storage and cause considerable loss during storage, transit and marketing (Figure -1).

1) Rust
Diagnostic Symptoms
• The disease is restricted to leaves although sometimes it can seen on tender shoots and berries.
• The rust pustules appear as small spots, 1-2 mm in diameter.
• In early stages these spots are yellowish becoming orange in color with increase in size.
• On the upper surface, opposite the spots on the lower surface , the color is often brownish.
• In severe attack leaves may dry and wither.
• The berries remain small and fail to ripen.
• Extensive defoliation weakens the trees and results in poor yield, severe die back of twigs, and death of trees (Fig.1).
