The lesson elaborates how it is pertinent to develop our speaking skills in order to express our views effectively on a day to day basis. Working on our speaking skills also helps us in growing our connections and opening new prospects in the work front. Speaking skills consist of a combination of skills like mechanical skills (learning how to project ourselves at the right volume), organizational skills (managing oral language in a meaningful way), expressive skills (expressing or communicating ideas in an effective manner while speaking) and pragmatic skills (developing social norms like taking pauses at adequate stances or making eye contact while speaking).
After establishing the basics, we proceeded to learn how to initiate conversations at various setups. While expressions like-Hi, what's up? or How are you? works in an informal setting to open the conversation, in an official or work set up it is recommended to use formal expressions like Hope you are doing fine? Or comment on a common topic like what do you think about the new HR? Or did you like the work conference we just attended?
Whenever you feel short of questions to put forward in a conversation, try to comment on things or animals in possession of the person you are talking to. Like is this a new dress? When in an outdoor setting, you can also comment on the weather like it's a clear blue-sky day perfect for taking a long walk. Right?
If you don't know much about the person, don't hassle out instead pose general questions like where are you working or what are you studying in college?
Expressing opinions is an important part of speaking. When you agree with the expressed opinion, start making your point by saying-"what do you think about the expressed views?" Or what are your thoughts on.
When you don't agree with the expressed opinion, clearly and confidently assert I disagree or I beg to differ and elaborate on the expressed opinion.
Always remember communication is a two-way activity so always ask the listener for adequate feedback. It's important for an effective speaker to ask for the listener's views on the topic he/she just talked about.
By taking this class, you will become more confident in initiating conversations and asking or offering your opinions in various instances of daily life.
